We stopped here to grab a few drinks while waiting for reservations somewhere. It looked like a good place on Yelp and it was just as good as we thought. We took a seat at the bar and were greeted by the friendly staff. They helped us pick some delicious beers and even let us borrow their phone charger while we sipped away. The most recent in a few new shining examples of how cool Golden Hill can be. Restaurant Bar is more than just Gastropub here. Beer selection is one of the best out there. Yard House, Tin Can got it beat off the top of my head, but possibly top 3 selections in SD, probably top 5. Bartenders are great, not too modern mixologists, but noteworth none the less. The bar alone would get 4 stars despite being beer/wine only. They really know their pairings and yes the bar area is small. Food is just superb. As a restaurant it's 5 stars with no gimmicky menu, no uber super fusionesqueness. Just good food, good pairings. When I was dating a vegetarian she raved about the veggie options, while I was digging into custom made prosciutto sandwich. I usually go with the Turkey and Brie which is one of the best anywhere. Then we were told that the brussel sprouts were the most popular app, but we found it to be a definite faux pas. The Kimchi flavor did nothing to offset the natural bitterness and was just a mess of a dish. The burger was substantial in size but came with little accoutrements besides cheese, and the patty was a bit dry. It tasted like a classic burger grilled up by your dad on the BBQ. So it makes me so sad to write this review because I literally used to go here once a week. I loved it and loved the staff. BUT, I have to agree with Ryan C. We stopped coming because the owner and his group of "friends" have taken over the bar. They drink - a lot - and are loud, scream profanities and take up half the space. When you go in, they acted like we had crashed their private party and made us completely uncomfortable. I loved the staff - they were always friendly. The food was always great. But we now feel like we can't go in there because of the owner. We've tried going at different times - brunch, a random Wednesday and weekends. It's always the same. Found this place thru yelp while my husband and I were looking for a brunch place that was near our hotel. Coming here in was pretty quick from our hotel. There is no parking lot but there are plenty of parking on the side street. We went in and were greeted warmly by the staff. Not only were the staff awesome, but the food was phenomenal as well. The party throwers reserved the upstairs area, which was a cool location to relax and converse. The service was a bit slapdash at times due to high volume relocating party guests. There was some forgetfulness on ordered items. I had the Chicken and Waffle Benedict. The chicken was moist. The waffle was flavorful. The Honey made the whole dish seem a bit too sweet. I finally got a chance to this past weekend when I met a coworker there after work for a few drinks. I love this place! What a great little neighborhood spot! Its a perfect addition to Golden Hill! There's an upstairs with REALLY steep stairs which seems like a bad idea in a bar that I didn't get to check out. I've been wanting to ck out Counterpoint ever since I stopped by Nest (the thrift store next door) a few weeks back. I finally made it to their Happy Hour. It's one of the first hot summer days this summer and I was anxious to get something nice and chill to cool off the afternoon. Thank goodness it's air conditioned inside too. And the Happy Hour got me a giant $3 glass of white that made me a very happy girl. We also ordered some appetizers and I'd say they were all really reasonably priced and complimented the drinks~ Service was great, attentive and made us feel very welcomed. I love the unpretentious but retro chic atmosphere. What's great too is that they do also server beer so it's great for when you have non-wine drinkers in your group. Which was good because some places I had been to recently had only beers from places I had never heard of and not so good. The beer made my nose run so they could really use to clean the lines more often. I had a burger and it was pretty good. My wife had chicken and waffles which was ok, chicken was well brined but the chicken was much much smaller than the waffle making it less than appealing. It makes me sad to write this review because I've been coming to Counterpoint occasionally since it first opened. It used to be fantastic-- top notch food, creative cocktails, great beer selection. I don't know what happened but tonight was my final visit. The prices have stayed the same while the quality, creativity and atmosphere have completely collapsed. The food: sliding towards standard San Diego bar fare. I once had a mind blowing cassoulet here. Tonight I had to settle for meatloaf bites, octopus cucumber salad and seared grouper.... Meatloaf bites: fried breading was heavy, soft and didn't stick to the meat. The meat inside fell apart instantly. After cutting into the "bite" (much too large for a single bite), you're left with a soft piece of fried breading with which you can re-stuff the pulverized beef. Octopus cucumber salad: the cucumber salad was good. The octopus was prepared poorly. It was a large, older octopus with a thick fatty gelatinous layer around the meat. Normally this is removed, usually after blanching. Not here. Imagine delicious grilled octopus topped with a raw slug. It was like that. Seared grouper: I have no idea... they served it and said "Here's the yellowtail. He told you we're out of grouper, right?" Nope, news to me. But that's ok, I like yellowtail. This one was mediocre. Somehow managed to be dry while cold in the center. Atmosphere: seems like the staff, management, and/or ownership are more interested in having a good time themselves than providing one for their patrons. There were only a few tables of actual patrons and everyone seemed off-put by the boisterous shouts and loud profanity come from the staff and their friend at the bar. Noise and profanity don't bother me, but it felt more like a scene out of Bar Rescue than the Counterpoint I remember. Music: '80s hard rock seemed like an owner's personal choice rather than a good fit for the design of this restaurant. Bummer. It's a great location. I'm sure someone else will have a chance to recreate a quality restaurant here eventually. read more

I live in this neighborhood and have been going here for years. The reviews might confuse you since it goes from 1 star to 5, but that has always been my experience here. Some of the wait staff in the past was horrible, I've had one criticize our orders (we had a dietary restriction), I've waited forever for service. But all the servers now are wonderful, friendly, prompt, and helpful. In the past years food has always been good to outstanding. I can tell you the owners give zero F***s, if you head to the bathroom you can see a giant picture of the owner's son peeing off a cliff behind the toilet, and I have been here when he and his friends are being rowdy. The laid back good times feel is what this hidden neighborhood gem is all about. They have a new chef this past year and I love his local and sustainable menu. Unpretentious & hipster, Counterpoint is my new favorite hang-out spot. The "other" Cucina Urbana, for some, with more eclectic food & access to fine wine without the unnecessary wait. I had always wanted to check out this place, as I sometimes frequent Mosaic, the yoga space right down the hall. Local art, in eerie blues and white, and an open patio w/ overflow upstairs, makes this quaint bar just tight enough. For drinks, we ordered Viognier (Australian featured), a bottle of the Petite Syrah, the Lost Abbey Angel's Share beer, and prosecco. Most tasty is the beer cheddar soup that comes with slices of bread (see pic) & the Pain Frites, exquisitely dripped with blue cheese & accompanied by jalapeno syrup. The bread pudding is crispy enough w/ the right amount of sweetness. Less favorable were the steak & arugula, which had no flavor, in pale comparison to The Turf Supper Club down the street. The flatbread with sausage & onions were bland & uninspired. The watermelon gazpacho (not pictured) was refreshing to taste for at least one banter, & the stuffed eggplants made for good presentation. The staff was extremely helpful; I liked how they helped each other out & would clear tables that were not necessarily assigned to them. There was a good flow of people in and out, the vibe was full of fresh energy, and the casual atmosphere with the open breeze from outside makes this one of my new places to frequent. I did not give it 5 stars because I think some of the dishes lacked flair; I would have also liked shrimp to be on the menu, perhaps tossed in as part of an appetizer. We got the Five Board Cheeseboard (see pic) which was such a disappointment, as the portions were far from elite. Go to Table 926 in north PB/off Turquoise Street for the most amazing cheeseboard, that comes tasty with honeycomb and a stronger varietal of cheeses with apricots & nuts. The cheeseburger is delicious and is cooked exactly how you order it. I always have said, "a place that can make great fries can make great food." My motto stands correct here at Counterpoint. Based on some of the more recent reviews I wasn't too sure what to expect when I came here on a Saturday afternoon with my boyfriend. We were greeted when we came in and sat at the bar. The bartender was friendly and helpful with drink and food suggestions. I don't remember what two cocktails I had, but they were both very tasty. They were 100% accommodating when I asked for all the bells and whistles on the side of my French toast, which was delicious. I just had a delicious brunch at this restaurant and wish that I could give this place a glowing review. Unfortunately, my friends and I were subject to a complete nightmare experience due to a completely out of control patron. During the course of a 2 hour meal he yelled and banged constantly on the table. He pulled out a knife at one point and grabbed our servers shirt collar in some kind of joke? My best guess is that this dude is somehow connected to the restaurant because at one point he went behind the bar and no one stopped him. Also no one stopped him from making the atmosphere terrible for 2+ hours (he was a mess when we got there and a mess when we left.) Went there with two friends on a Saturday around 1:00. Place full. Stood there 10 minutes waiting for any employee to acknowledge our existence. Finally someone behind the bar waves at us and says someone will be right with us. Which ended up meaning ten more minutes. A waitperson seats us at a table that hasn't even been cleared yet. I had been to Counterpoint before and always considered it to be about a 4 out of 5 star kind of place but was never quite sure why. The food is really good, the happy hour prices are great and the selection of beer and wine is exceptional. Why was it missing that last star? Sometimes you just need someone from the staff to connect with you and make you feel at home. Thank you for that! There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that if I were still a resident of San Diego, Counterpoint would be one of my favorite hangs in the entire city. What a welcome lil' spot in Golden Hill! There aren't many things I enjoy more than copious amounts of wine from all around the world, endless arrays of fromage, and a well thought out charcuterie plate... and this place has 'em all in a modern, somewhat quirky industrial space. In my humble opinion, it's just what the 'hood needed! Not only do they have fantastic meat and cheese spreads, but they boast a menu chock full of other comfort foods as well. Items like mac 'n' cheese, the ever-popular and somewhat ubiquitous artisan grilled cheese sandwich, sandwiches, and a really unique take on pommes frites using a miniature baguette cut lengthwise and smothered in Gouda fondue. One of the better, more intriguing appetizers I've had in some time! I highly recommend it. It's a little small, so I'd avoid rolling through on a busy night. But you can snag some space on their outdoor patio during happy hour (Tuesday through Friday, 5pm to 6pm & Saturday & Sunday, noon to 6pm!), you'll enjoy the lovely warm weather San Diego is known for, along with $3 glasses of red/white wine and select beers as well. So this place is in a really cute spot in Golden Hill. It is pretty small tho, so be prepared for that. I had the Persimmon salad that was excellent. It had whipped goat cheese( it is worth it for the whipped goat cheese alone!!!) plums, salted pecans, and a leafy(think spinach but not) base. The dressing was lightly tossed with the salad and it was some sort of vinaigrette. Very tasty... magically delish. My friend had the Osso Bucco that was falling off the bone and he was drooling. The place is small, loud, and crawling with hipsters wanna-bes. Although I can definitely look past all of that for good service, beer and eats, Counterpoint is not it. With all the other great options for that combination around town, I am surprised this place has any business. SUMMARY: The dudes who work here have less common sense than a seven-year-old. We got there on a busy Friday night and there was no waiting-list system (they also do not take reservations). The servers acknowledged customers, but then just left us waiting around in the middle of the place. After waiting for a table for almost one hour, I saw the same guy who acknowledged us serve food to and then sit a couple who had arrived there at least 20 minutes after my boyfriend and I did (and while there were other people waiting ahead of us). Inexcusable. THE WHOLE SCOOP: We got there on a Friday night and the place was a-buzzing. My boyfriend and I were approached by a guy who said there would be a 20-30 min wait for a table. The guy seemed annoyed when I asked where we should put down my name for the wait. He told us he got it and we would have to trust him. I thought this was quite weird and ordered a beer, which came fast enough. (There were some really good beers on tap and some quite ordinary ones, but even the special beers were not anything you can't get at most beer-oriented eateries/bars in town these days.) As time passed, we stood awkwardly in a semi line in the middle of the tiny place. I noticed there were two couples ahead of us. About 15 minutes later, I noticed a couple behind us talking the the waiter, and then another group coming in. About 30 minutes later I hear the customer behind us ask the waiter if they could order some food while they waited. I chuckle to myself, believing the request was a bit absurd, but hey, the waiter will tell them that this was not possible because, oh, I don't know, it would slow down service for the people who actually had a table (and because where the heck would this idiot put his dishes??)...but lo and behold, I see the waiter coming back with a couple of menus for the couple. Really?? A few minutes later, there comes the waiter back with a bottle of wine for them. At this point, we had waited almost one hour and should be sitting down soon (there was only one couple ahead of us). But the debacle was not over yet: a few minutes later, we realized the people with the bottle of wine -- the ones who had gotten there like 20 minutes AFTER us -- were sitting at a table as the waiter was serving them food!! Hungry and furious, I headed to the bar and told them what had happened, but the guys had the balls to try to justify it! They said they were too busy and did not realize it ...yeah, right. I've found a new love... and its name is Counterpoint. I have to thank Rossi H. for introducing me to this gem of a wine bar/restaurant in Golden Hill. Since then, I've been back twice, and I'm infatuated with everything about it. Counterpoint just oozes charm. It's right in the heart of Golden Hill, but far enough away from the main nightlife corridors, making parking a breeze. The inside is airy and modern but still warm and inviting. I love sitting on the second floor and watching the action below. There's also an outside patio, which I'm sure is more appealing when the weather is warmer. Counterpoint is a casual, seat-yourself type of place, but the service is still efficient and on-point. With extensive wine and local beer lists and a nicely curated menu of gourmet dishes with small-ish portions (and low prices), Counterpoint is perfect for getting a group together and tasting lots of different food and drink items. Call it American-style tapas, if you like. Here's a run-down of what I've tasted so far. Let me add that *all* of it pairs nicely with their $7 Riesling. (Generous pour, too.) ** Kimchi Brussels sprouts. Beautifully crisped and caramelized, with a nice kick from the kimchi spice. Absolutely perfect. ** Wild boar Waldorf salad. A more deconstructed version of the traditional Waldorf. Fresh apples, walnuts, Brussels sprouts, and St. Agur blue cheese are all excellent compliments to the beautifully cooked boar. ** Pasta with guanciale. Creamy egg noodles with lots of black pepper, olive oil, and spicy, savory guanciale. Can't go wrong with any of this! ** Farro risotto with butternut squash, duck confit, and egg. This one might just be my favorite. All the components were cooked perfectly and loaded with flavor. ** Bread pudding with apples and cranberries. Light, airy, slightly crispy, buttery, and sweet (but not too sweet), this bread pudding is phenomenal. Lots of different dishes, and not a bad one in the bunch. Have I made you hungry yet? I have loved this place since the day it opened, a block and half from my pad. But for some reason, I kept forgetting about it. No more. Now, Counterpoint is my number two (sorry, Hamilton's will always be my true love, but mostly only because I can bring my dog). The service is as friendly as it gets, consistently, every time, whether they're dead or there's a party of 300 people rotating through (true story). They go out of their way to say hi, say bye, and make sure you are well taken care of in between. Plus, ladies, pretty much all the dudes behind the bar are easy on the eyes. Jus' sayin'. The wine and beer lists are perfectly sized and well-edited, with price ranges for everyone. They have bottles of Protocolo wines for $15, no corkage. I mean, really. What I've tried of the food has been great - mostly crispy pizzas, fancy sandwiches/grilled cheeses and cheese plates. You can also get individual portions of several cheeses and charcuterie. The pain frites are the ticket though - thin fried (?) strips of french bread with melted blue cheese and champagne jalapeno honey for dipping. Hallelujah. Ha ha, I've never really paid attention to the 2 star rating before, but "Meh. I've experienced better," perfectly sums up what I think of Counterpoint. My reasons for going: It is close to my house, they have beer, I'm really bored or I'm on a first date with a girl who would probably like it so I know she and I probably won't work out. The food comes in small portions. The beer selection is fine (but where isn't nowadays). They take the phrase "happy hour" literally meaning it lasts exactly one hour. I will say that the staff is very friendly, but they are neutralized by the "regulars" who always seem to look at you like a prison guard would look at an inmate if they notice you at all amidst their "localler than thou" meanderings. Where did you go, bro? I've been living in Golden Hill for a couple years and I've never gone to this place, and I really wanted to try it because I've heard good things. My girlfriend and I went here for dinner last night and when we arrived it was completely empty. Which was great because when I drive by it's usually packed. I thought for sure we would get excellent customer service, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. Our server totally forgot about us. We arrived at 6 PM and our server approached us about five minutes later to take our drink orders. We were ready to order our food too so we put in our orders, but he never came back. He vanished like a fart in the wind! At about 6:35 PM we kind of started to wonder. That already seemed like a long time to wait for food, but I know that sometimes the kitchen can get backed up. Plus we were enjoying our conversation. I've worked in restaurants so I know how it goes, but there was nobody in there except for us. I think there was one other guy at the bar. I absolutely hate complaining about my food and the service because I know how tough it can be, but this seemed a little off. We waited another 10 minutes, and then another 10 minutes after that. This place is simply amazing. I went here on a Friday night with my hot date and as soon as we got there, I couldn't help but be impressed with the architectural design and decor. It has a chic, modern vibe for its atmosphere which felt very cozy and relaxing. Great for having an intimate date. While we were waiting for a table, we asked to try some of their beers on tap. The bartender gave us two nicely poured beers which were almost half pints in size! Almost half a pint! Not the typical taster you get from a bar but more like a taster you get from a brewery tour. Now let's move on to the stars of the night. The sandwiches. My hot date ordered the Turkey and Brie (oven-roasted turkey breast with brie, topped with port-poached cranberries on ciabatta) and I got the and Prosciutto and Humboldt Fog (Italian Prosciutto with a Californian Chévre and figs on ciabatta). The sandwiches were pretty big so we decided to exchange halves so we can both enjoy the two sandwiches. Every bite of the Turkey and Brie was giving me foodgasm in my mouth. The combination of turkey breast, brie and cranberries was so simple yet it was giving extraordinary results. Same goes with Prosciutto and Humboldt Fog. I wanted to just scarf it down because it seemed like I couldn't get enough of it. But I held back and I ate it the right way. I took my time and enjoyed every bite. Letting all the ingredients explode in my mouth giving me a very wonderful dining experience. When you come here, don't expect a lot of great beers on tap. They only have 6 but they do have lots of bottled craft beer. If you want great beer, have dinner here then drive over to Hamilton's.
