On Friday the 13th of February, my girl and I got engaged. To celebrate, I surprised her with a 5-course meal at Jaguar Paw and it was incredible from start to finish. The food was amazing, and when we mentioned we had just gotten engaged that day, they even hooked us up with a celebratory drink. Such a thoughtful touch, and we truly appreciated it. We had the roasted sesame salad, crab salad, steak for two, and cheesecake for two. We also drank mezcal all night and absolutely loved it. The staff were amazing the entire night welcoming, attentive, and genuinely kind. The ambience was also perfect for the occasion. I loved this place but it didn't necessarily meet my expectations. But to be fair I put very lofty expectations on it. I've been meaning to get here for a while. Literally since it opened. Tonight I decided to. It was a Friday night around 7pm. It was PACKED! I couldn't believe it. The wait to get a table was over a hour. They seemed understaffed. The two bartenders were also front of house and occasionally running and bussing. There's not a ton of seating. Maybe 15 tables that can fit either twos or fours. Max occupancy is around 60 it feels like. What was neat about the experience is that they also have live entertainment. The group that night played cumbia jazz. The "stage" area is pretty much a corner. They had 5+ musicians and when it was the trumpet or saxophone turn etc they had to come from outside (since it was so busy and filled) to play and then tagged the next person in. During the day it's a coffee shop. During the night it's dinner. I think I would absolutely come back but it would be during the weekday when it might be less busy. For the first hour, we crammed ourself at the bar. We ordered yuzu sour (soju, simple syrup, like, egg white), kalimotxo (red wine, coke), island time (passionfruit, pineapple, amaro, kombucha) and rubijito (sherry, sprite). All the drinks were fantastic. I was extremely happy about them. We were going to eat at the bar which is an exception they said, but last minute, someone got up and left. (There's no time limit). And we got two seats by the entrance. We ordered the Pescador sushi roll. Aguschili de res. Dumplings. And another sushi roll that I can't remember which sucks because that roll was fantastic. It was crunchy, packed full of flavor, wasn't too heavy. I believe it was Big Pawpi. The dumplings came in second place. I think the sauce that came with it was superb. The other dishes which is why I'm giving this a 3 star, were a bit disappointing. On paper, it looked good and the presentation was there. It just wasn't as filling nor did it scratch an itch. The space is long and narrow with eclectic art on the walls, bar seating, and a few tables. The staff was friendly and seated us quickly. We looked over both the cocktail and food menus and found some really interesting, unique options we were excited to try. We ordered the steak tostada, cucumber salad, and the Barrio roll. For drinks, we tried the Armoire. The food came out fast -- each dish was unique and tasty. Portions lean on the smaller side, but still flavorful. The sushi roll was fresh, though it had a bit too much sauce for my taste, which soaked into the rice. Next time I'd ask for a lighter amount. The cucumber salad was spicy and delightful -- would love to see that noted on the menu. The steak tostada was packed with toppings and really good. The drinks were refreshing, and the glassware and plating were beautiful. Definitely recommend checking this place out. They have live music and seasonal drinks, so follow them on social to stay updated. This place feels like a bit of a hidden gem in barrio Logan. We came on a Tues night right around open and it wasn't busy at all. It's not a huge space but they do have a good amount of indoor seating and a long bar area. We started with a few of the holiday drinks, all of which were delicious and very pretty. We also got cucumbers, pork curry dumplings and the jaguar roll. The cucumbers were not sweet at all which I appreciated and the flavor was savory and had a nice crunch. The curry was a little bit spicy and had a good number of dumpings in it. The jaguar roll was a full size and all the components tasted fresh. Service was a bit slow but it seemed like they only had one person working front of house and he was doing his best. Even though the drinks took a bit longer, they looked gorgeous and he would carefully walk everything over without having anything spill. We appreciated the attention to detail. read more

They do emphasize that the food is more tapas style, so do come here not expecting full blown portions. My friend and I liked our cocktails! We got the Summer Pop and one of their drinks with a passionfruit flavor, but I couldn't recall what it was. The space is limited to bar seating and a few tables, but they were able to squeeze us two in. My review is a bit overdue, as we came during their soft opening phase. Walking in, we were welcomed right away. It was a cute space - different than some of the other local spots - but it fits in well with the artsy shops around. The bartender (possibly the owner) was super nice and explained about their cocktails since they don't have a full liquor license. We each ordered a cocktail and were pleasantly surprised at how good they were. Maybe a little sweeter than their actual liquor counterpoints, but still good. We did not try any food, but it smelled amazing, so next time! They also have an interesting wine selection and some beer options. The service was a little slow that night, but they were just getting going. He was very nice and made sure everyone was happy with their drinks. Walked in at 630 to try this bar that specializes in low abv cocktails. This quaint nook of a bar has ample ambience that sports a lovely retro feel. 70s grooves mixed with fun soul numbers play in the background. The disco ball and floral details make this place perfect for a ladies hang or a cute date. Tried their Michelada and Mexican Candy Cocktails and although I liked both I'd have to mention the Michelada was heavy on Clamato and lacked the tang and spicy-ness that you expect from the hot sauce in this classic cocktail. Jaguar Paw is another new listening bar that has popped up in the SD area. It's located in the heart of Barrio Logan across the street from where a renown taqueria recently closed. The inside of the suite had ten two-top tables and six stools at the bar for seating. A disco ball hung from the ceiling while the interior decor had beige and salmon as primary colors. Two sets of customers were at the bar when I arrived so I took a spot at one of the tables. Soft instrumental music was being played from the speakers. The menu at the time was comprised of eight cocktails, four beers, and four wines for drinks. Three types of food were available... Fish Dip, Sardine Crudo, and Oysters. I picked the Fish Dip and the Oysters to go with a Gimlet mocktail. Lemongrass, basil, and soda water were the main ingredients in the sparkly non-alcoholic drink. The Fish Dip came first and featured smoked skipper mixed with creme fraiche, tomato, habanero, house pickles, and lemonette. A set of crackers was provided on the side of the serving tin to scoop up the dip which had a nice blend of savory and tartness. The medium sized raw oysters were served as a trio topped with salsa kyoto, sunumono, and togarashi. The taste was fine, I just wish there were more pieces for $12. I don't know how often items on the menu are rotated, but a few more food choices would be ideal. The bartender came over to serve my table in between his customers at the bar. He was very efficient and polite. The ambiance was very low-key which made Jaguar Paw a nice spot to unwind and relax. read more

After coming here a few times I've gotten to try out their sushi rolls and I can confidently say it's some of the best and freshest I've ever had. The low-AVB cocktails are really good and creative!! It's clear they have a passion for what they do. They also have really delicious mocktails that aren't your basic pink sugary drink, they're full of complex flavors. They no longer serve food but they do just food pop-ups regularly. The service is good, I've been on a slow and busy night and still, the service is good. The ambiance is cute and casual. They sometimes also have DJs playing music too. Barrio Logan is easily one of my top neighborhoods in San Diego. It has so much character and I never get tired of strolling around the area. Recently, some of my friends from San Francisco came to visit, so of course I had to bring them to Barrio Logan, and as we were walking, we stumbled upon this cute sign that immediately intrigued us. I am big on color and cool fonts, especially love dark contrasting tones, so this 'Jaguar Paw' sign really marked off all of those for me. Upon entering, to our surprise, we learned that the restaurant was in its pop-up trial to gather initial insight on how to run the restaurant. They wanted to maintain a lowkey vibe and did not want to publicize it on social media, so that they could sort out the kinks slowly, as people organically come and go. When I heard this, this actually made me gain a lot of respect for their concept since I've seen many restaurants just immediately jump into it, which often causes a lot of gaps in service. I can tell this place really cares about wanting to deliver a quality experience from A-Z! The Jaguar Paw team's goal is to create a fresh seafood restaurant paired with a listening bar. They plan to have local DJ's coming in to spin and based off their playlist when we visited, I foresee them doing a great job with their DJ selection. Their entire playlist was already on point and was heavily focused on soul music. Think music along the lines of Thee Sacred Souls, Bobby Oroza, Thee Sinseers, The Altons, & etc. The spot is super cute too, decorated with green and pink hues, and after talking to the server, we found out that a lot of the decorations in there were DIY (e.g., the spraypainted styrofoam part of the wall, which we were very impressed with). They even provide you adorable little wet towels on a pretty ceramic dish, so that you can clean off your hands prior to your meal. During our trip, we were able to try a few cocktails and seafood dishes. The cocktails are incredibly well made here and I LOVED the tiny crane origami that they incorporate into some of the cocktails. So cute and fun! They mostly serve craft soju cocktails, natural wines and local craft beer here, and the options are great. As for the seafood dishes, these had amazing flavor and the presentation was so well thought out. Everything here is made fresh, including the chips that you use to scoop your ceviche. The chef came to speak with us too and mentioned how he's in the process of doing a lot of R&D work. From there, he ended up bringing out some things for us to try for free, such as his homemade vegetable chips, as well as a matcha dessert topped with toasted sesame seeds. Just wow - we were so grateful and impressed with his spontaneous vision in creating these on the spot for us. Although Jaguar Paw is still in its early days, I truly hope that this restaurant flourishes, as their team is extremely creative and clearly very skilled in the culinary department. I plan to be back and Jaguar Paw has simply skyrocketed my already immense love for Barrio Logan! read more

I really wish I didn't have to add ONE star for my highly dissatisfied review. I had high hopes for Jaguar Paw because I love supporting smaller businesses, but unfortunately, our visit turned into a frustrating and disappointing experience. We arrived early just after 5pm, without reservations, and were okay with waiting for a table. The host told us it would take 45 minutes to an hour, so we left our name on the waitlist and went next door to enjoy a drink while we waited. All seemed fine at first, but things quickly went downhill from there. An hour and a half later, I returned to check on our status, only to be told there was still another party ahead of us, and that walk-ins were limited due to reservations. Fine, I understand that. What I didn't understand was the lack of transparency. The host suggested we wait further, I asked if there was a time limit for how long a table can be occupied he said there wasn't, but that most people only came in for drinks and stayed for about an hour. This gave me some hope that we might still be able to enjoy a drink there after dinner. But here's where the communication failed. Instead of being upfront and letting us know that it was likely we wouldn't get a table that night due to the heavy reservation load, they just kept us hanging with no real updates. If the host had just said, "Sorry, it's reservations only tonight, and it doesn't look like there's a chance for walk-ins," I would've understood and returned another time. Instead, we continued to wait, hoping for the best. By 8:15pm, we decided to walk down the street to a charming Italian restaurant, where we were seated immediately. Fortunately, we were able to enjoy a delicious meal, excellent wine, and a truly memorable evening. Thanks to the Italian restaurant for saving the night. At 9:15pm, more than 3.5 hours after we first put our name down, I received a text saying we had been removed from the waitlist. I couldn't believe it. After all that time spent waiting, 3 hours and 45 minutes, they didn't even have the courtesy to let us know we were no longer in the running for a table or prompted them to remove us from waitlist. This could have been a great experience, but it was overshadowed by poor communication and inadequate customer service. I get that reservations are important, but if walk-ins are unlikely to get in, that should be communicated clearly upfront. Also, they should stress "reservations only" or set a time limit on tables as other successful restaurants/bars have. Unfortunately, we won't be returning, and I'd advise anyone without a reservation to look elsewhere unless you're prepared to wait indefinitely and be disappointed. read more
