Usually we see an employee soon as we arrive and are able to as them for directions, but sadly not this time. That is something I appreciate coming here is there is usually someone to greet you and point you in the right place. There was one gentleman that made a comment on my taking pictures, but he didn't have a vest on or asked if he could help me find something. They have added new signage in their parking lots telling you to move all the way forward so can pass you as the parking lot is tight. Parking is an issue at times as it's a small lot. We've had to park on the street before near their garden center. Overall this is a solid hardware store with usually easy to spot employees, that are happy to help you.

The other day I was walking around the store looking for wall clocks and bug bulbs, and a store person had to help me. BTW, the store people aren't there to watch for shoplifters. They're there to help you find stuff in a semi-unorganized store. What? Someone is going to steal a bag of anchor bolts? Maybe run out the door with a shop vac? And Yes, they make keys. I was surprised to be dismissed so quickly so I made the motion of looking around like I wanted to see some options. I gently pressed and he again stated "We can't help you." Then he told me to go to Bed Bath & Beyond. 1. I was there because I wanted to support a local business. I could have easily tried Lamps Plus first 2. Before you summarily dismiss a customer, maybe show her the globes you DO have and explain why they would or wouldn't work for her particular lamp 3. This is a 60-year-old lamp...I doubt Bed Bath and Beyond would have what I need So I went to Ensler Lighting in Berkeley and spent my $$ there instead. At first the guy at Ensler also wasn't certain he had what I needed, but guess what? He took the time to look around and experiment and ultimately he was able to jury-rig something that worked great. Imagine that?

Unfortunately, this visit was frustrating. I placed an online order that was estimated to be ready in 15 minutes. I intentionally waited an hour before coming in, but I still had to wait while my order was put together. It honestly would have been faster to walk the aisles myself, grab the item, and pay at the register. What disappointed me even more was the customer service at the front counter. The staff I interacted with came across as dismissive and unfriendly, which made the experience feel less welcoming than I expected. I genuinely want to keep supporting Cole Hardware because local businesses matter. I just hope they can improve the online pickup process and provide a friendlier customer experience. Those two changes would make a big difference and would keep me choosing them over the convenience of Amazon.

On the island we have 2 hardware stores and close by in war torn Oakland is a Home Depot. The…read morehardware store at South Shore is convenient if shopping at other stores in the center but the problem is I usually have to go to the other hardware store to actually find what I need. The other store....Encinal Hardware. Granted neither place is going to have the quantity and breath of products as Home Depot. Given that, I almost always find what I need at Encinal Hardware. Growing up I was in hardware stores all the time so I love the old style multi tiered nail bins among other things. The isles are narrow but navigatable and packed with just aboit everything you might need. The staff is as knowledgeable as any I've seen. I usually know exactly what I want but I have had some assistance with getting custom cut items in the back. I have also overheard staff helping other customers who have no clue. Staff is alway patient, polite and helpful. From now on even if I need something at Safeway or TJ's at South Shore I'll go out of my way to come here for hardware needs.
