I've been hunting for a new tea place ever since L'Espalier moved out of the brownstone and into a hotel. So, yes, the search has been going on for a while. But now that I've found the Courtyard Tea Room, my search has come to an end. The service was attentive without being stuffy. The ambiance was lovely. The sandwiches and sweets were all excellent. It was a textbook tea in a dedicated space... instead of in a hotel lobby or in the corner of a restaurant also serving lunch. I want tea to feel like a nice event, and this one did. Came here on a Friday afternoon at 3 with a reservation. We were the first ones in line and they seat you pretty timely. The place is beautiful as it's inside the Boston public library. The afternoon tea is a set menu with a tea, champagne, and a food tower with finger foods! The tea was really high quality and they had a large selection to choose from. The food was surprisingly really delicious, I loved all the savory items and the sweets were great paired with the teas. The scones were not bad and came with lemon curd, berry jam, and cream, but they were a bit dry and I wish they were replaced with other assortments. Had a great time at the courtyard tea rooms weekend tea! We had a 11am seating time, and there was a little line of people who had arrived early. They have everyone do the coat check (complimentary). We were seated in the larger room with lots of natural light, it was beautiful. I also loved how they kept in theme of the library and served the menus in old books. They started with our tea order, and we asked for the vegetarian menu. Then they came around with champagne and a non alcoholic version. They have good tea selections, the dessert are yummy, and the finger sandwiches were exceptional. There was a roasted portobello one that especially wowed everyone! But I would stay away from the alcoholic drinks, it didn't seem to have much alcohol for the price nor have amazing taste. I thought it would be a small amount of food but we all left stuffed and couldn't finish the desserts or the scones. If it had been a slightly better value I'd rate it 5 stars but at the cost it was it needed to be a bit more amazing to earn 5 stars. That said our primary server was super nice and she plus the overall team provided excellent service. The scones were buttery and delicious and came with clotted cream and a pretty good if a bit runny and not quite lemony enough lemon curd. The savory treats were ok but not consistently great. The room is stunning and classic, in cream and gold, but not over the top. There are big palladian windows looking ot to Boylston Street on one side, and onto the Library courtyard on the other. The teas, while not particularly inventive were good representatives of their types (earl grey, darjeeling, etc) and came in the expected categories of black, green, white and herbal, and well as tea-based cocktails for an up-charge. Food was (for weekends) a choice of salad or soup (in this case, summer strawberry salad, or gazpacho -- both were fine). Tea sandwiches included lobster salad, egg salad, chicken salad, cucumber, salmon and a couple others. There were the assorted pastries and chocolates, and two small scones each with clotted cream, lemon curd, and orange marmalade. In short, a classic, well executed high tea spread, with plenty of nibbles to go around, which we couldn't finish, and they insisted we take the leftovers home. Service was solicitous, friendly, and everything was well explained. The only reason for a star off was inability to follow instructions on how to split the bill despite it literally being spelled out for them. The bathroom is quite far from the restaurant (you have to walk through two hallways to get to it) so that kind of takes you out of the experience a bit. -Customer Service Our waitress was friendly and attentive. She got a big busy towards the end so it took us a bit to get our check but nothing that I'd really complain about. She was really great at refilling our teas in a timely fashion and making suggestions. -Food EH. Nothing was bad, I'll say that right off the bat. Nothing really stood out as being great, either though. I'll do a rundown of each category. Tea: They didn't have as many selections of hot teas as I'm used to when I go for afternoon teas but they did have a nice collection of alcoholic teas and lattes which was a nice touch. The tea was quite good and I really liked that you could switch out the type of tea you got over and over (I ended up trying three). Side Salad: The side salad was an add on and it was fine but nothing impressive. They could have made this $6 salad a bit more appealing by adding a home made dressing but as it was, it was just ok. Sandwiches: The sandwiches were fine. They could have been a bit fresher but they were pretty good. I'm allergic to seafood but my friend said the shrimp one was amazing! Pastries:I thought these were the best out of the three. One of the biscuits were quite dry but tasted great dipped in the tea. The macaroons were really good! Scones: They weren't bad, but they weren't good. They were not the type of scones that could easily break apart, which created a bit of a crummy mess when you tried to. The collated cream also wasn't very authentic, in fact I think it might have just been whipped butter. They jam they served with the scones was really good, however, it wasn't the type normally served with afternoon tea. It tasted good, but not what my mouth was watering for. Price: Afternoon tea in generally is an overpriced endeavor, so my rating on price isn't based on whether its worth the money (I don't think the best Afternoon tea I've had has been worth the money) but rather its worth the money in comparison to other places. If this place was around $25 a person, I'd say it offered good value or if they had slightly better food I'd give them a higher rating, but compared to places like the Langham the value just isn't there. Its not THAT much cheaper than the hotels which do tea better. Overall: I didn't dislike this place, I just didn't think it was worth the money though I am bias to what an afternoon tea is supposed to be. Today I took a special friend to the Courtyard Tea Room, the manager sat us at the worst table possible for us. I called in advance and said it was my friends birthday, but he chose the worst table. I asked for a table near the window, no happy birthday to her or anything. Service was not so great, they were busy. I later told him about this mishap and he apologized but I have to be honest, he didn't care, he didn't pay attention and treated me like I was just another customer standing in line. I came here last Sunday for afternoon tea. I made a reservation in advance since this place is quite popular. We were seated in the large beautiful tea room, I think the smaller map room is for people who are not doing the tea service. This was my first time at tea service ever and I wasn't sure how it was going to work. They gave us a menu of what we were going to get, and the prix fixe menu means you get one of everything (per person). We got a small soup and salad, and many small bites, both savory and sweet, as well as a few scones served with deliciously tart lemon curd and buttery cream. We left absolutely stuffed. They gave us a box to take home some of the leftover desserts. We also got our own teapots of tea and could get refills and try different teas. I really enjoyed the Cozy Copley and the Wedding Blend teas. It was a fun experience, definitely something I would take a friend visiting Boston to. read more

They had a great selection of teas, which come in their own individual tea pots. The tea menus came in books which was charming. I found the chai fantastic, though an entire pot of it was too sweet for me. Fortunately, you can change tea orders, so you aren't getting pot after pot of the same beverage. They have a variety of green, black, white and red teas. Afternoon tea comes with a platter of mini sandwiches, desserts and scones in addition to all the tea you can order. They'll cater to any dietary restrictions you have. The sandwiches were delicious and some of the sweets were very rich. There will be one of each item for everyone. Surprisingly, the quantity of food was a perfect amount for lunch. Be prepared to wait during your service though. They seem to take a more leisurely pace here which is both positive and negative. Once seated, they don't rush you to finish your food and you can sit and enjoy conversations with your party over your tea (and fancy hats) but we waited for our waitress to come around to take new tea orders or the check. The chairs were lower than I expected, thus I sank down a little more when sitting. I didn't realize how small the dining area is, but it's a really nice space to catch up with friends over tea. I got the blue flower earl gray tea, which was good after I added milk and sugar. You get a 3-tiered platter with scones, desserts, and savory sandwiches. I really liked the lemon shrimp salad on the brioche. It was light and refreshing and the bread wasn't rock hard like it was for the crostini. Both my friend and I really liked the lemon curd that was served with the scones. My favorite dessert was the lemon meringue tartlet because it wasn't too sweet or dense. One of my friends works across the street and had always wanted to have afternoon tea so when I visited her in Boston, we finally made it over to the Boston Public Library for tea. When we stepped into the room overlooking the beautiful courtyard, we just stopped and stared. It looked like every five year old girl's tea party dream come true, but fancier. There was a lot of purple and the whole room was very cutesy. We were seated at one of the tables for two next to the window, in these massive purple armchairs. It wasn't busy, but it took a while for our waitress to surface and tell us about the tea. I ordered the Raspbery Herbal Tea and my friend had the Lemon Herbal Tea. In addition to the teas, we had three tiers of finger sandwiches, scones, macarones, tarts, cookies, and all kinds of delicious finger food. We slowly worked our way through all of the food, but in the end, it was too much sugar and we ended up packing some of it to go. Definite favorites include the scone and macarones. Despite having worked 2+ years in the same building and just steps away from the tea room, I'd never even been inside there until my sister specifically requested afternoon tea for her birthday. With the Taj and Langham hotels closed for renovations respectively, I looked up availability ASAP and there was only one booking left for that day. I snatched it and then silently counted down to the day. A couple days before, though, they called and said they needed to move our booking up by half an hour because they had to host an event. No big deal as long as we had our allotted 90 minutes. On the day of, we got there early and waited for the tea room to open up. We checked and were brought to our table where we were given menus tucked away in hardcover books. I chose the white peony tea, which was actually something I'd been thinking of drinking. The birthday girl got her jasmine pearl, my dad ordered a green and my mom had the white peony as well. We started off with summer salads with strawberries, and then the lovely tower of finger sandwiches, scones and petit fours. I personally liked the Maine lobster finger sandwich, plain scone with Devonshire cream (can't say no to clotted cream) and the macarons. They were all very good but nothing to write home about. In the end, I think I enjoyed the atmosphere of having tea with my family to celebrate my sister's birthday way more than the food. Today we went there and they said they didn't receive any reservation... Hmmm. Interesting. Anyway, we wanted to check out this place so we waited for an hour for a table. When we came back after an hour, it took them 20' to set up the table. While that was going on, some of the employees kept coming back to us to check if we wanted table for 2.... I don't get it. We said many times that we wanted table for 4... one of the employees also looked nowhere near friendly and walked away, saying "Jesus". Um... we are paying $50 per person to eat here. What's with that service? For the price, the food is just so not worth it. Only one or two out of the savory options were tasty. The pastries were way too sweet. To top it off, we were given the checked half way through our meal. I mean, really? I understand that the place would be closing soon, but isn't there a nicer way to say it? Our whole party were so disappointed. It's hard to put into words how horrible our experience was. For sure we're not coming back here ever. I like that they include both sweets and savory sandwiches in the set (when I went to the Taj, you had to get the most expensive set in order to get savory sandwiches). They also recently added a soup or salad as a starter, which makes it more like a comprehensive meal. The teas are delicate and delicious - I love the white tea and the earl grey. They also have matcha latte and earl grey latte by the pot too. Unlimited refills. Sometimes service gets a tad slow but in general attentive and nice. Not a cheap experience but good value compare to similar spots and pricing. Make reservations in advance! It's been over a year since my first and last visit here. Again the service was limited but weather was better (no snow on the ground) so the view was a bit nicer. Still retains a classy and elegant atmosphere but again, the server was not attentive. Water glasses remained empty and tea pots were refilled once after multiple attempts to wave down any server. Same selection of sandwiches (disappointed the menu hasn't changed in over a year) and the desserts were more rich and heavy than I remembered. Most memorable was the Wild Mushroom Butter on Pain de Mie Sandwich. Again I was disappointed in the pastries, especially the macarons. Just walk around the Boston Public Library, and enjoy the view. After 25 years of living in Massachusetts I hadn't ever been to the Copley library until now. This was the perfect way to celebrate my friend's birthday. The library has two rooms where you can get tea, both rooms have very different vibes. I personally liked the brighter room for the occasion. For $48 you get to select an appetizer and a tea. This comes with various sandwiches, scones, and desserts. I have included a photo of the options available the day we visited. I wished they had noted that the appetizers were option, it was $6 and the price was included in the $48 but I wouldn't have ordered it if I had known. I chose the Cozy Copley for tea and it was delicious, I highly recommend if it is still on the menu. The service was incredible! If you're decided on where you want to go for high tea in Boston I think this place is great! Especially located in the culturally significant Copley Library. read more

So my girlfriends and I had a trip planned for a few months ahead of time... the birthday girl wanted afternoon tea and proceeded to book at the Mandarin Oriental. Needless to say, we had bad luck. Even though we booked tea 6 months ago, apparently they cancelled having afternoon tea there a month ago. In a panic and with a flight a few hours later, I frantically called the first google search that came up as I looked at the birthday girl slowly getting super depressed on her birthday. Thankfully, the Courtyard squeezed us in! And as a lover of books, this couldn't have been any more perfect. When we got to our table, I had ordered a flute of champagne before we got to order our teas. This is where the brunch hit a bump. When our waitress came back, she reached for something and knocked the entire flute of champagne and spilled it all over the trouble and some on the birthday girl. UGH. Disheartened, I tried to do my best to dry up the table and her quickly. Another waitress (I assume she was training the one who spilled the champagne) came by saw and immediately said to get us to a new table. After that, she was our waitress and was SO SO wonderful. Everyone at the Courtyard really paid attention to detail and making our experience extraordinary (something the Taj Hotel lacked when I went there for afternoon tea). For the actual tea portions + brunch bites, I'M SO IN LOVE WITH THEIR MATCHA TEA. I'm craving thinking about it now.... But seriously, the customer service outshined the food which was hard to do in the first place. So Linda, I want to thank you so much for making it the best!! I went here with a group of friends and the Tea Room was quite spacious but definitely make a reservation in advance if you're coming on a weekend! The tea room has a set menu, but there's a wide selection of teas to choose from. If you have any allergies they'll make adjustments. I have a fish allergy so they switched out the salmon for a chicken salad. I wouldn't say the sandwiches were exceptional (some of the bread a little dry) but the dessert was quite good! There's a solid variety of desserts that I wish there were more savory items to balance out the sweetness. It was surprisingly filling that a few of us couldn't finish dessert. Located in the Boston Public Library in Copley, it's a beautiful place to spend with your close ones. I made a reservation for my friend and I for her birthday for Afternoon Tea. Upon arrival, you are able to walk through the whole Courtyard and the Library, which is full of wonders and beautiful hallways. The restaurant itself has a small cafe attached, where you can grab a drink and study. I was seated after I gave the hostess my name and they were really kind to inform me that they do birthday platters. The Courtyard Restaurant is honestly so elegant, with high ceilings and natural lighting beaming in. I love the aesthetic and the elegant feel that overall restaurant gives off. I thought it was really cute how they put their tea menu in For $39 per person, this has been by far the best Afternoon Tea place in Boston that's worth every bang of your buck. I ordered a jasmine tea and I believe my friend ordered the chai latte. We both enjoyed our drinks, as it complimented well with what we were served. Every bite was delicious, but I enjoyed the scones and jams the most. I liked how the currant scone wasn't overpowering with the citrus flavor, as do a lot of places serve. The devonshire cream, blood orange preserves, and the lemon curd all complimented the scones in a light way which I enjoyed. I also really enjoyed the savory bites and my favorite were the shrimp salad on brioche, the cucumber on citrus cream, and the smoked salmon on pumpernickel bread. The prosciutto bite seemed a bit too salty for me. The lemon meringue tartlet was a bit sour for me, but I did like the crust. The chocolate sinclairs were devine, as for a person who loves chocolate like me. I also really enjoyed the early grey shortcake as it was light enough to drink with tea. The macarons seemed a bit sweet, but the coffee one was delicious! I would definitely come back but maybe on a colder day and on a day where I'm in no rush. The only complaints that I have is that they kicked people out past 1 o'clock to seat the next group of people. However, the restaurant was pretty empty, with about less than 10 tables filled. The service was enjoyable though. They also may want to swap out their tea strainers because some of them looked a bit rusty. Overall, it was a nice experience and I would definitely come back to celebrate more birthdays and special occasions! read more
