A pleasant surprise in Govy!…read more My kids have been coming to summer ski camp for five years now, and both kids have had Volcano Cones. Today was the first day we've all had their ice cream. First, it's just ice cream! I don't know what the name represents. Because all though Mt. Hood is a "potentially active stratovolcano" (pulled that straight from Google!), most people wouldn't extrapolate that far, in my opinion. I thought a volcano cone was going to be like a hole in the middle filled with hot fudge or something ... it's not. It's just ice cream! The staff working at the shop today were so nice!!!! I'm hoping this is always the experience! During COVID it's hard to find good help, but the two young women were great with service. Kudos to these employees! The ice cream is delicious! I don't know if it's "homemade" but it has to be small-batch. They even have a traditionally Govy flavor of Huckleberry; which I enjoyed and would recommend and would order again. I also got Mint Chip, my staple! The mint chip was green meaning they had to add food dye; I prefer when brands don't, but the food dye doesn't effect the taste. My husband and son both got salted caramel and Oreo. The Oreo was ordered on recommendation from other reviewers and they liked it. Salted caramel is a favorite of my son especially and he gives it two thumbs up. This will be an annual experience. Update: Went for a second night and got the Beachcomber which I enjoyed more than I expected. Also got the strawberry which has been my least favorite so far - not bad, just least favorite.

Don't let the little ice cream cart fool you, Birdsong serves some of the best ice cream we've had…read morein Bend. They keep things simple, offering just a handful of berry flavors made by blending creamy vanilla ice cream with real fruit instead of dozens of flavor options. We ordered the blueberry with the dairy vanilla base and the marionberry with the coconut-based vegan ice cream. I had the marionberry, and I was honestly blown away. It was incredibly creamy, packed with fresh berry flavor, perfectly balanced, and not overly sweet. My husband and my dad were just as impressed, and we all regretted ordering the small size because it was that good. One thing that really stood out was how thoughtful they were with the vegan option. They thoroughly cleaned the machine before making my coconut-based ice cream, which I really appreciated. It's a small detail that says a lot about how much they care. The person running the cart was very friendly and patient. If you're looking for a shop with 30+ flavors, this isn't it. They focus on doing a few flavors exceptionally well, and it absolutely pays off. We haven't stopped talking about this ice cream since our visit, and it's easily one of our favorite spots in Bend. We'll definitely be back!

Birdsong Ice Cream is one of the food carts at Podski that surprisingly sells New Zealand-style…read morereal fruit ice cream. I never expected to find this style of ice cream in Bend of all places! They even have a legitimate Little Jem ice cream mixer. Their menu is really simple, with only two types of base, one vegan, one dairy, and four different fruits. They offer two different sizes, but I'm not sure how much larger the regular is vs. the small. The little display in the front doesn't make the regular seem much larger. Perhaps they should actually display the volumes to make it clear? Regular, Vanilla Base, Marionberry ($8.50) - They use a really, really stretchy base here, stretchier than most ice creams that I've ever eaten, almost like it has mastic gum added. Other reviews mention they use Tillamook as the base, but I'm a little skeptical. Tillamook is certainly stretchy since they use guar gum as a stabilizer, but I can't recall it being quite that stretchy! I believe most other NZ real fruit ice cream places use sweet cream as the base to really allow the fruit flavors to shine, but Birdsong uses vanilla, which adds a delightful note that enhances rather than covers up the fruit. It's a complementary flavor and works very well together, although I personally still prefer having sweet cream only. The fruit is blended in very well so there aren't any icy pieces at all, with the only textural difference coming from a small bit of crunch from the seeds in the marionberries. It's otherwise a sweet, berry fruity dessert. I guess the one downside is that the portion size is kind of lacking for the price. I get more from the real fruit ice cream places in Seattle for cheaper, despite Seattle being much higher cost of living. (4/5) Birdsong serves a pretty decent representation of New Zealand real fruit ice cream, at least to my limited knowledge! It's certainly worth a try, if not just as a sweet frozen treat.
