Don't miss out on the food too; the grilled cheeses are enormous and delicious! The grilled cheese with havarti, fig jam, and arugula was my favorite, and it's a great value for $8 since I was definitely stuffed. The cheddar truffle pretzel was tasty as well and came with two kinds of mustard, for only $4! Plenty of outdoor seating in the front and in the back patio. This is one of my favorite places in the neighborhood! Not only do they have a great outdoor space, which can get super packed on the weekends but they have ample seating inside and board games to play as your trying out their crazy impression beer selection. They have a lot of beers on tap but also multiple fridges with beer and cider from all over as well as a fridge of cheese and meats to eat while at the bar or to take home. The pricing is great for the quality and helpfulness of the servers - I was looking for a large format cider to take home but was unfamiliar with a lot of the brands. Hung out and enjoyed some beers at Covenhoven on Sunday afternoon. A beer bar with a nice selection of drafts and a surprisingly large back patio for day drinking. Quality: Covenhoven is just a solid beer bar. They have sixteen taps, and rotate through different beers. During our visit, IPAs were clearly the most represented on the menu, but they had a little bit of everything, from lagers to stouts to ciders. I stuck with ciders, but no one in my group was unhappy with their selections. And if you are not a fan of the draft options, they also have multiple fridges full of other beers in cans and bottles. They also had a little kitchen setup, where they were serving up grilled cheeses, pretzels, and brats. Nothing crazy, but good food that complemented the beer menu. Quantity: The size of the pours were clearly marked next to the options. Value: $7-$9 for the assorted Drafts. Ambiance: Covenhaven is located in Crown Heights, a block over from the busier Franklin Ave. They had a few small tables set up out front, a few more inside, and then a pretty sizable outdoor patio. We started out front, but because our group continued to grow, we ended up in a corner bench in the backyard. It was a very nice backyard area, the only issue was the speakers did not make it back there. Crowd: It was pretty busy on Sunday afternoon. Even with less than ideal weather, folks were ready to gather and enjoy some beers. Service: We had a larger group, so it was great that the manager helped us secure a space in the back. The beer selection at Covenhoven is top notch - both on tap and in their fridges. Their food menu is also well stocked with items that pair well with craft beers (lookin' at you deliciously fluffy pretzels and cheesy gooey grilled cheeses {3). Service here was friendly and efficient. They also invited us to their MY LITTLE PONY themed anniversary party but I already had a previous engagement *tear*. One of my favorite places close to my neighborhood to grab a beer and chill. The place has an impressive, rotating tap collection along with a great selection of bottles. Prices are reasonable. Service has always been friendly for me (not sure what is up with those small smattering of negative reviews). They take credit card which is convenient. There's a limited food menu including sandwiches and pretzels that are enough to satisfy your munchies while you drink. Seating inside opens nicely out into the street, and there's a great backyard space. Crowd is chill, laid-back and a variety of all ages. Place gets pretty lively on the weekends, especially when the weather is nice. Definitely a great spot in the Crown Heights/Prospect Heights area for all you beer lovers out there! read more

Visited a few weeks ago with a friend from India, with the idea of taking some beers and snacks on the patio outside. I've been a fan of this place in the past, and everything was a-ok except for the openly racist bartender. He pretty much took his own time serving us at the bar. Yes, I get it, he's overworked, but his body language and attitude towards us was hostile and made us feel unwelcome. I'm basing this assumption on how he spoke and behave with all his other primarily white clients in relation to us; both at the bar, and in the patio where he came around and made small talk at a lot of the tables. He never once asked us how we were doing or even smiled while serving us. It's embarrassing to this place that they hire this guy. Hope management fixes this. Great beer selection and snacks though! And I like the idea of taking beers from the fridge and going outside, it's a really nice concept. read more

Don't go when it's busy on a Sunday. The beers were nice but the food we ordered took at least 1 hour 45 minutes (we were told 30-40 minutes) before we gave up in receiving them. Bartender told us the line for food was "backed up" even though we saw people after us get their food. Whatever system they are using to track orders is not working. Thankfully the bartender refunded the food, which is why this isn't one-star. read more

Yea this place has a great selection, but the staff were incredibly rude to me. I am a young woman, and the all male staff seemed to have every excuse to avoid and belittle me when I was here. I ordered three beers and it took an arm and a leg to get their attention each time. I get that you are beardy Brooklyn beer dudes, but you don't get to act like you're better than me and make me feel like I am interrupting you when you are talking to each other. The staff here clearly cater to men who they see as equals. When I was trying to close, the one woman who was either just off or on her shift saw me waiting, being ignored and she loudly told them to help me. We exchanged a mutual look of disgust and annoyance. BOTTOM LINE: your staff should treat people, especially women, better. I will not be coming back here read more

I enjoyed a fun night celebrating a friend's birthday at Covenhoven last night. The staff was friendly and, despite being very busy, they were quick and responsive to orders. Since I'm not a drinker, I can't comment on their booze - although all of my friends were excited about their selection. However, I ordered the cheddar grilled cheese, which came with thick-hardy bacon and tasty mustard to dip it in. Since it was a bar, my expectations were pretty low; however, they were quickly exceeded when I took the first bite. The bread was thick, it wasn't overly greasy, it was clearly high quality cheddar, bacon, and mustard... all in all... MmmMmmmGood! The only bummer is, like many places in the city, Covenhoven is small and narrow, which made it hard to figure out a place to stand where you wouldn't be constantly in the way. read more

Great place to catch up with friends here with booze and board games. I found this place while googling board games in Brooklyn and this place was listed in the Top 15. You can bring your own or play what's on the shelf in the back. We brought Dominion, but saw that they had Settlers of Catan and decided to play that instead. They have simpler games as well like Cards Against Humanity, Jenga, Apples to Apples, Parcheesi, etc. My friends and I stayed here for around 4hrs on a Saturday. The vibe is chill and cool. No one kicked us out. There's a huge fridge lined on the backwall filled with various types of artisinal beers, wine bottles, etc. We tried and shared 2 cherry beers and apricot wheat beer. I liked the apricot wheat the best. The cherry one was a bit too sour, but I got used to it at the end. Bf ordered the truffle & cheese pretzel and it smelled delicious. They also serve cheese and cracker plates. There's a cute backyard garden, but I was too chilly to hang out outside. I'm not sure if there's wifi or not, but there were a couple people working on their laptops. Towards the end of our evening, daylight turned to dusk and we couldn't rely on the sole candle on our candle to play our game. Will definitely come back! read more

They were putting up their holiday decorations when I was there and the owner was very sweet and had three - count 'em three - Christmas trees up. I can get behind that. I have been told their grilled cheese is so good we should mail some to the middle east and end all that conflict but I have not yet had them. This place is such a gem! The first time I came in, my mom and I were exhausted from a long day of apartment hunting. The large selection seemed intimidating at first, but the bartender's recommendations did not disappoint. Their food was great too -- the salad was simple but refreshing and the smoked knackwurst was a perfect complement to the sours that we had with it. My most recent visit was just as pleasant -- I stayed for a couple of hours to get some light work done. The bartenders were, once again, great, and I was able to enjoy a couple of different beers, along with a pretzel. Their music selection and lighting make this such a versatile space. Overall, it's a great place for just about anyone -- I could definitely see myself bringing a large group of friends or just coming alone to seek some refuge from hot summer days. As an aside, I've never considered myself a big beer person but there seems to be something for everyone; all you have to do is ask! It's with a heavy heart that I even choose to write this negative review because Covenhoven has been a neighborhood gem and great bar for a long time, but I have to share an extremely negative experience that happened to me and a group of friends this weekend. I walked into covenhoven holding my tiny Pomeranian on Saturday afternoon. I attempted to buy beer to go from one of the fridges and was immediately told "we don't allow dogs in here" by a bartender whom I've not interacted with before. I quickly let him know she is a registered service animal and with beers in hand we were just buying the cans to leave. He came around the bar and asked to see her registration. I let him know it's not on me (as you are not required by NY law to produce evidence of a physical OR mental disability). He said he needed to see proof or we'd have to leave. I reminded him again that she is a service animal and this bartender proceeded to take our beers and tell us we could tie her up outside or leave. I chose to leave and not cause a disturbance, but after 3 years of regularly visiting this bar I don't know if I'll be back. I've seen multiple patrons buying beers with dog in tow and often these are much larger dogs than mine that are on a leash inside the bar. I don't know this bartender personally but my friends and I certainly felt targeted as I doubt he would've treated other customers similarly. We were the only 3 people of color in the bar at the time and certainly felt unwelcome by the actions of this bartender. In the future I would've welcomed a conversation or even the decency of being able to complete my quick transaction. His questioning of my "ability" took a lot longer than it would've to just ring me up once I mentioned I was with my trained service animal. I would still welcome a conversation with either this bartender or with management. read more

There's a reason to drink on Classon, and I'm not talking about a place to drink a forty real quick when you break off of the West Indian Day Parade. It's Covenhoven! This gem is really coming along and adds more every time I go. It has a fantastic selection of brews in the fridge. Obscure ones you've never heard of. Each beer has has a opening fee, which isn't bad because the drinks are already priced low. There's a very chill vibe. It's a great spot for a group of people to relax and have a quiet night out. BYOF. Friendly bartenders. Board games. Sweet backyard. They have some bar snacks, and each time I go in I see they get a little more. It's great to step into if you want just a beer or two, (Yes I can drink responsibly, don't doubt me) at home. Or if you just want to grab an extra one for the road. Solid 4.5 beer bar with fantastic backyard. Covenhoven should be a 5 star beer bar, but I have to dock them 1/2 a point just for the fact that they refuse to keep what they have on tap updated online. They are on beermenus but seem to only update once a week. I guess this is fine for someone who comes every night or lives next door, but makes it hard for someone like me who lives several neighborhoods away in Carroll Gardens. With nearly every other top notch beer bar (Blue Star Beer Counter, mekelburgs, hopshills, mission Dolores, bar great harry, owl farm, st gambrinus) keeping their tap list updated daily this is unforgivable in 2017. It's not like Covenhoven doesn't always have great stuff on tap, but why take the risk when every other place lets you know. Anyway, aside from this gripe, the place has a great feel and fantastic back yard. I also like that a lot of staff from my beloved Bierkraft (rip) ended up here for a while. This place is great if you love beer. And even if you don't but you just love a good neighborhood bar. It's super cozy when it's cold out and when it's not, their backyard is the perfect brooklyny place to hang out. They have greenery growing along the fence, which I thought was just normal until one day I looked closer and noticed it was a true grape vine. Also, they only have a few things to eat but all are yummy. Interesting cheeses and meats you can buy straight from the fridge and they give you bread and a knife and a cutting board and you just go to town. The pretzels are very good. I've never had one of their grilled cheese sandwiches but just the smell of them cooking in the background makes me want to live here. read more

This is beer heaven. Mecca. Possibly one of my new to me favorite places. I came in here on one of those its still winter and snowing outside even though it should be spring blistery days a few weeks ago. Had to use a coupon from a brokelyn beer book I purchased. But before even opening up the book I sit down and our fantastic bartender comes by with a stack of little plastic tasting cups and exclaims: "What would you like to try?! You can try all the beers! I really don't care about limiting people!" Something to that effect and I knew I had died and gone to heaven. Especially after reading the chalkboard and noting that I had pretty much never had any of the beers on tap. After much deliberation and sampling probably half of the menu I finally decided on a Limo Tint by Prairie Artisan Ales and later found a bottle ($2 corking fee) for a Dark Truth Stout by Boulevard Brewing. Stuff I had never heard of before and stuff made of magic. Their fridges are stock filled with hundreds of bottles of beer, which you can also jump on in and purchase to go. Food menu was small but probably still growing and being worked out: mostly a variety of grilled cheeses and soft pretzels. It smelled good whatever was being cooked up. In the back they have a variety of board games and they do trivia on certain nights. But what jarred me was when the bartender told us about how their first anniversary party was going to be MY LITTLE PONY themed! So happy to have discovered this bar right by my bf's place. We went on a Saturday night and loved the ambiance. Dim lights, good music at a reasonable volume, and plenty of space. Note that they only offer beer and wine, so you won't be able to get any cocktails. They did have an extensive beer selection though, so that was nice. And everything seemed decently priced. They have a bunch of boardgames (Battleship, Jenga, Scrabble, etc.), which made for some fun times. Staff was friendly and the place was not crowded at all. Moving from Jersey City to Brooklyn was not without its sacrifices. While in general Jersey sucks, between Super Buy Rite and a few smaller stores my beer needs were met. There's definitely no shortage of beer stores in Brooklyn, but they aren't necessarily convenient to me or even passable in some cases. After shopping around a bit, I think I've found what I need in Covenhoven. Right off the shuttle train, this place is like Brooklyn's version of Good Beer in the East Village, in terms of the hybrid bar/beer store setup as well as the level of quality. Covenhoven's space is long and narrow but they make the most of it. The front is a long line of tables for people to sit and chill at. There's a garage door in front that I imagine they'll open up over the summer in addition to a backyard in back that I didn't get to check out. (it was raining when I visited). I also saw people who brought food from the outside, so apparently that's allowed even though they have a limited food menu. In back of the tables is a small bar area along with the beer coolers. Tap list is about 15 beers long with a wide variety of different styles, including classics (Sierra Nevada Hoptimum, Full Sail Session Black Lager) and more unique offerings (Newburgh Doppio, Grimm Double Negative). This is definitely not a new-to-craft beer kind of place, although the bartenders seemed competent to guide someone around if need be. Regardless of what you get, I found the prices to be quite reasonable--much lower than beer bars in Manhattan. This extends to a lesser extent to the big refrigerators of beer across from the bar. Their selection seems a bit unorganized, but I'd compare it to mixing in chocolate eggs in an Easter basket rather than just throwing them on top. Trying to find what you're looking for is part of the fun! It's not a massive amount of different options, but it's more than it looks like and the quality is certainly there (check out them on BeerMenus.com). On my first time visiting, I got the Newburgh Doppio on tap, and picked up Prairie/Evil Twin Bible Belt, Prairie Puncheon, Off Color Apex Predator, and some Westbrook Gose. The damage was a little over $40, which is a little below or on par with what I'm used to paying. Between that, some good music, good bartenders, and overall a cool vibe, I'm going to be back sooner rather than later. A crazy thought that the true pure blood Manhattanite I am ended up stumbling across this gem in a foreign place known as Brooklyn...After visiting a few awesome exhibits in the Brooklyn Museum, it was only right to explore what this borough had to offer and I'm so happy that I did. This spot was incredible - the staff was so friendly, the beer selection was endless and the vibe was so cute (not to mention the outdoor space that was packed when I went, wahhh) First off, the staff - I'm not a big beer drinker but I've been trying to find my niche so after trying about 5 beers on draught and liking none I was just going to be that girl to opt for the wine. Luckily the bartender stopped me. We had a discussion of the types of beers that I have liked in the past and I shared the descriptions (that of course I have saved for times like this) and she went into the fridge and pulled out a Saison that I fell in love with. I literally bought all the ones left in the fridge and took them to go. Oh and they fill growlers to go also! The place seemed to be filled with locals, some with their babies, which I was very skeptical about upon arriving because I'm not a baby person. However, all the babies were very well behaved and most importantly CUTE! I did not mind sharing my space, and staring at them while i sipped my beer secretly contemplating how I could kidnap one (totally kidding, don't call the cops). I didn't ask any questions so I don't know how knowledgeable the staff is about the beers they offer, but they were friendly, so they get points for that. Reserving a five-star review for when they start selling more food (they said a cheese plate and picked vegetables are coming soon). I could also do without the $2 capping fee for any of their retail bottles, but that's just because I'm used to other places in my own neighborhood with the retail/tap combo that don't charge you. read more
