She immediately recommended that we try Scarlet Kitchen & Bar and get the pretzel. Scarlet is located in the historic St. James Hotel in beautiful downtown Red Wing. The restaurant is large and inviting, but it was a lovely night, so we opted to sit on their patio wherever had a view of the town. Our server was attentive and friendly. Of course, we ordered Amy's Famous Pretzel, and with beer cheese and garlic butter dipping sauces, it was absolutely delicious--more like a pretzel bread. I ordered the Mississippi Pot Roast Sandwich, and that hit the spot, too. A simple Panna Cotta with a berry sauce was a light, and tasty finish to our meal. If you want a great meal, in a beautiful restaurant with attentive service, give Scarlet Kitchen & Bar a try. It will not disappoint.

For the appetizer we got the Brussels sprouts with the horseradish mustard dressing and they were a hit. We even saved the dressing to use for the fries and sandwiches we ordered for the main. The kids burgers came out shortly after the appetizer which was useful to keep them entertained. It was pretty much an adult portion size and a well cooked burger. The only issue was that it took a while longer for the adult food to come out, so the kids were all done eating by the time we got our food. We got the Scarlett Salmon, Cubano, wild Mahi, Swedish stew, and pot roast sandwich. The salmon had a nice crust to it, but unfortunately for me, that also meant it was pretty salty. The couscous, watermelon radish, and chimichurri that accompanied were all very tasty though and the chimichurri did have a good kick of spice to it. The Cubano had good flavor and the horseradish mustard was a great accompaniment. The pot roast sandwich had decent flavor but was a little dry. The Mahi was the more successful fish entree and the Swedish stew also got great reviews. For dessert we couldn't make a decision, so we got the dessert trio which was a triple chocolate fudge cake, orange blossom and raspberry cake, and passion fruit panna cotta. The chocolate cake was a little dry for me, the raspberry cake was moist with a nice summer flavor, and the Panna cotta was the standout. A perfect light option to end the meal, and it came in a pretty cup. Overall they did have decent food and portion sizes were pretty good given their higher prices. The highlights are the beautiful outdoor patio and the friendliness of the servers.

When we walked in it was busy and the hostess was friendly and estimated the wait time to be around 5 minutes, and it was; which was nice. We were seated in the porch area (there is a garage door that separates it from the rest of the restaurant) and it was sticky. The air was like the outdoors (SUPER humid day) but not as warm; there clearly was no AC. They did have a big ass fan on (that's the brand name I believe ) but it was on so low- you could not feel it. We all ordered drinks and only my husband was asked if he wanted a refill (family of 6 here). Our waitress never checked on us to ask how the food was until she asked if we were ready for our bill. My oldest son ordered a pizza with banana peppers, mushrooms, and pepperoni, and instead he got a pizza with green peppers, no mushrooms, and a little bit of pepperoni. My husband ordered a burger which he said was dry and so dry in fact he had to remove part of his bun (he is NOT a picky eater). I ordered a Rachel. My sandwich was incredibly dry and the only reason I almost finished it was because there was no way I was letting a 15.00 sandwich go to waste.... My oldest daughter ordered a cheese quesadilla and it was comparable to something she could have made herself (age 9) and thrown in the microwave. My youngest daughter (age 3) ordered a grilled cheese and it was so bad that she refused to eat it. I tried it and it tasted like wax. Velveeta cheese does not make a good grilled cheese especially when it's cold by the time you get to eat it. It was inedible, we ended up throwing it away. The only person who got decent food was my second son who ordered a 12" pepperoni pizza. He said it was pretty good. I will say this place serves "bar food". We will not be returning. The waitress did take the messed up pizza off of our bill (we appreciated that) but, if she had checked up on us earlier, he could have just had a new one made... I fully understand that it was busy, but it's still not an excuse for poor service and bad food. I have worked in restaurants from low end to high end, so I know how it works. We would have appreciated a check in from our waitress and a smile at least... She could have been having a bad day, but don't take that out on the customer. At least the hostess was friendly. I also want to add that the menu has way too many options... maybe if there were less options, they could perfect some of their recipes in order for the food to taste better... Sometimes too many options is not a good thing.

And the food was just not that good. We called ahead on a weeknight for a group of 8 women, arriving at 6:00. The main restaurant was lovely, but we were sat in a back room which would be nice I guess for a large group but also had very little ambience. It felt like a storage room. We were dressed up, and clearly celebrating. The wait staff did not ask or comment. That's fine, they aren't obligated to notice. We ordered two appetizers to share. I thought the portions were very small, especially considering the price. If the waitstaff had told us, we would have ordered three. We also would have skipped the mini baguette basket, which was super mini. The artichoke Florentine was good, but served with blue corn chips that quite honestly were embarrassing with how small and broken they were. If I had been with a different group, I would have sent them back immediately. Our entrees included the Creamy Pesto Cavatappi, which visually had very little pesto and the people who ordered it definitely agreed they would not order it again. Two people had the Italian enchilada, which had easily twice as much sauce as it needed for the amount of pasta included. It felt wasteful. The Mafaldine de Salmone was described as "drizzled with oil" but the amount of oil on the dish was rather intense, and visually very unappealing. Two people in our group were vegetarians. This might be nitpicky, but it sure is unpleasant when one person asked to get salmon instead of sea bass on their entree and there was a $3 charge, but to take to take the fish off other entrees did not result in any discount. Our entrees came out as such: four together. We waited for a while and then of course told our friends with food to start. The 5th, 6th, and 7th dishes arrived one at a time and when the 7th dish arrived it had been a solid 10 minutes since the first entree was served. Then after another five minutes, they came to tell our 8th diner that they had run out of pasta sauce and could not make her entree. This was fairly unbelievable, considering she had ordered the same thing as multiple people at the table. Also, the waitstaff did not seemed bothered at all. They just presented it as a fact, not offering any suggestions and actually seeming disappointed that they would have to serve us another plate, delaying our departure. The missing plate was for the youngest member of our dinner party, and at 17 she felt very awkward. And of course our drinks, be they soda or water, went without being refilled for long periods of time. I sure do hope they figure out how to keep ingredients on hand, serve a table of 8 in under a half hour when all entrees are ordered at the same time on an evening where it just wasn't that busy and we had not arrived late. And perhaps just a little more pleasantries from the waitstaff and front of the house staff would be nice.

We were given menus upon being seated by the owner. The furniture is fun, there were cloth tablecloths and lamps on the tables. The building is beautiful, with old tin ceiling, beautiful brick walls and lots of beautiful woodwork, and of course there is art on the walls. There is a tv over the bar playing music videos, which didn't feel like it fit the finer, more formal ambiance of the dining room. The tv froze about 45 min into our visit and there was no more music during our time there. A few minutes after arriving our server brought us water and took our appetizer order. We ordered 3 apps. They finally arrived after about 30 minutes. The shrimp seemed like frozen breaded butterfly shrimp just thrown into the fryer. There were 9 little shrimp. It was dry. The calamari was more like octopus. Really big, thick, chewy pieces. The rings were the size of onion rings and the tendrils were the thickness of a little finger. The tempura batter on them was decent, but they were very tough and chewy. There was no seasoning on either the shrimp or calamari. I didn't taste the garlic bread but others said it was "fine." It was 5 *very* small 1/2" thick pieces. In spite of being very small, they looked nice, with parmesan melted on top. We had not been given napkins or utensils, so I requested them at this point and our server brought them out to us. Our water was refilled around this time as well. It was the only refill we were given during our long visit. About 10 min later we stopped the server again and asked if she was ready to take our entree order. She said she didn't know we wanted to order entrees, but she would be back to take the orders. Our party ordered two pork schnitzels, one short ribs, and two fried chicken steak sandwiches. Then we began our next long wait. Around 20 min later the pork schnitzel plates arrived. For starters, it's a pounded pork loin dipped in plain egg and then fried. One plate had the pork, a tomato slice and 3 pieces of (cold) lightly steamed broccoli. The other plate had pork, the same broccoli, and about 15 small French fries. We assumed the rest of the food would arrive soon... Around the time the 2 schnitzel diners had finished their plates, the short ribs arrived. The plate had thinly sliced short ribs that tasted like they had been marinated in plain soy sauce, the now familiar 3 pieces of cold broccoli, and some fries, along with a cup of ketchup. We asked how long it would be until the sandwiches would be there. they said "soon." The rib plate was finished and still we waited the arrival of the two fried chicken steak sandwiches. *An hour and 20 minutes after arriving at the restaurant* the sandwiches arrived. It looked exactly like the schnitzel except that it was on buns. the cold buns had sliced onion, tomato and a whole large romaine lettuce leaf. There were also fries on the plate. The sandwich was not steak. it was a pounded out chicken breast (or pork?) that had been dipped in egg and fried. A few minutes later cups of mayo and ketchup were brought out. While none of the food was terrible, none of it was seasoned, and it was all pretty much one-note flavor. Our water glasses had been dry for some time. A diner at the table next to us told us that this was a one-time experience for her and she wouldn't be back. During our 90 minute visit we were also approached by the owner and another worker (cook?) five different times asking if the food they were carrying was something we had ordered. unfortunately none of it was ours. This was unfortunately the worst American dining experience I've ever had. Some of this could have been overlooked if the restaurant had been really busy, but there were only 6 other tables in use during our entire visit.

The Pub soft-opened this weekend, and I think this is going to succeed…read more The owner told me they intend to keep a simple menu, similar to what was offered at this location under the previous owner and similar name. We had a pizza, and it was very good. The pizzas are on a pub crust, complete with docking. So that fits the name! I look forward to going back and sampling whatever else ends up on the menu going forward. Stop and check it out!
