Cavatelli pasta with beef short rib
    Brittany T.

Pleasantly surprised by this place during our stay at the Quail! We made a reservation here for Saturday dinner and it was pretty quiet. We chose a spot inside which seemed to be the move since the lakeside views were pretty but the water birds seemed to be a little too comfortable on the outdoor patio. I usually don't expect much from a hotel restaurant but the vibe here was elevated and everything we ate was really high quality. We started with the endive and pear salad with crispy prosciutto. So light and refreshing! Everything here was a delight to our eyes and taste buds. The scallops were also beautifully plates and cooked to perfection (according to my husband). For our mains, my husband went with the pork chop and I had the ricotta cavatelli with beef short rib. Oh my goodness that short rib was so tender, and the sauce on the pasta was rich and flavorful. I absolutely adore homemade pasta so this was a home run for me. My husband really enjoyed his pork chop but did note it might have been a bit over salted. Seasoning is subjective so I won't fault them for this because I think we generally prefer less salt than the typical palate at most restaurants. We finished off with dessert: blueberry pie and coconut panna cotta with candied pistachios and passion fruit. The panna cotta was delicious, don't get me wrong, but nothing beats a classic slice of pie. The blueberries were fresh and ripe and the crust of the pie was cooked perfectly, no burnt crusts here. Kudos to the pastry chef, I would come back just for the pie. Overall, highly recommend this spot if you're staying a the hotel. I know there's no shortage of restaurant options in downtown Carmel but Covey Grill is definitely worth a visit.

Delicious food for dinner and wonderful service! At first the drinks were very small and our waiter told the bartender and he personally came to our table and remade them. We appreciate the service and the food was really delicious..the Branzino was perfectly cooked and the NY steak was nicely marbled and juicy and perfectly cooked to medium rare.

Date of Visit: 10/29/2022 We stayed a the Quail Lodge & Golf Club located in Carmel Valley during the last weekend of October. On Saturday night, we visited the Covey Grill located in the lobby. We chose to sit outside next to the fireplace and right in front of the lovely Mallard Pond. Lilikoi $16 I got the passion fruit cocktail which is tequila based, with passionfruit syrup and lime juice. The Fairway $15 Cocktail of the month is bourbon and ginger liqueur based, with lemon juice and honey syrup. Roasted Beets & Strawberry Salad $15 The beets and strawberry salad has arugula, frisee, green and red strawberries, and cheese on top. Grilled Whole Branzino $39 Highly recommend the simply grilled section on the menu. There are meats and seafood selections. I got the whole branzino which was very yummy. Steak Frites $35 There are a list of $35 Weekly Specials on different day of the week which is not on the menu. 8oz New York Steak with fries and salad. Highly recommend Covey Grill even if you are not staying at the Quail Lodge. The foods were great and the view was amazing too!

Stayed at the Quail Lodge and Golf Club, so we came here for breakfast one morning! Had such a great experience. We had our dog with us and were really happy to be able to bring her here with us since they have a nice outdoor seating area, which by the way, is beautiful! I started off by ordering a hot tea, which came out with a nice little jar of honey which was the perfect addition to the tea! They had some nice breakfast options here. I decided to go with the Quail Omelet. This included your choice of applewood smoked bacon (which I picked), sausage, or ham, spinach, tomato, caramelized onion, jack cheese, marble country potatoes, mixed greens salad, and toast. This was delicious! The service was wonderful and so was the entire experience. There were many people enjoying their meals outside with their dogs. It was a very friendly and relaxing environment and I'm so glad we came here. Looking forward to visiting again!

Wow!! Impressed! Not only with Quail Lodge but the service and food at Covey Grill. Impeccable. We sat at the large private dining table in the back overlooking the lake for breakfast. Service was attentive with coffee and tea service. The menu had many options from healthy to indulgent. We had the honey yogurt with granola and a side pancake for a little decadence. The overnight oats with chia seeds, pine nuts, and fresh fruit was lightly sweet. The side of bacon perfectly crisp. The breakfast sandwich is hearty with a fried egg, cheese, choice of meat on a brioche bun. The frittata was full of spinach and veggies. The star dish was the avocado toast- I'm going to be dreaming about this one! Two huge pieces of artisan bread (my daughter said they tasted like Model Bakery bread) toasted with zatar butter topped with fresh avocado, herbs, radish, and cherry tomatoes with a drizzle of olive oil. Absolute perfection!

We came here for dinner and breakfast. Both times were excellent. We had the ling cod, huevos rancheros and omelet for breakfast. All very good. The service was excellent too.

Review based on ordering take out whole staying at the quail. Decently priced for a hotel restaurant and the food was very good, although the side salads are really laughable, it's a few measly pieces of lettuce and some tomatoes. But the omelettes, breakfast sandwiches and french toast are very good. It's nice to have a tasty place to order from and to enjoy food in your room

I wanted something to drink that wasn't sweet, so I tried their raspberry ice tea. They used a sugary syrup to flavor the tea, and that was a strike out. It was sweeter than a soda, so it went back and I swapped it out for a plain unsweetened ice tea. Then we tried the cheesy garlic bread, which we were really looking forward to. Welp, it came out with mozzarella cheese and a ton of corn. No butter. No garlic. We all looked at each other when we tried it. Ok, let's try their brussel sprouts. Those are hard to mess up - but sure enough, they managed to. They deep fried them to the point they were black and charred. There wasn't anything left of the brussel sprout itself, it was mostly crunchy charcoal. At this point, we all ordered something we assumed would be safe for our main. I got the sliders and a side salad. I had the salad but only of the sliders. The cheese on it was queso, like you use to dip chips, so it was ran all over the place and the burger was a grease ball. I won't even get into what everyone else had, but they had similar experiences. Overall, it was pretty disappointing. Maybe there are other things or other times where this place is better, but it was a swing and a miss for us.

Call for a reservation.. why it a family with history of fishing and volunteers ... the menu is good standard fish meals and pasta dishes... then ever night they have 5 to 6 specials of fish and maybe a meat specials... I always get a special . Friday night they err packed and the way Saint it's 39 minutes or you could sit at the bar in 5 minutes . We always had a table but that sounded good to sit at the bar. The team from the way to the assistants are just amazing... like a food team . They move so fast water, wine , bread with olive oil and basaltic vinegar with a touch of hot sauce. Our first time at the bar they serve dinners, wine and beers ... the server told us the specials or home made raviolis with crab ect. The special I picked was the grilled tuna ... with pasta and vegetables.. I said I want it lightly grilled.. he said a mini or two on both sides ... yes .. he said it the best way. You get to see what the others are having and get into conversations with them... the tables are very close together you can talk to other people at tables but they just have 4/6 people at the tables... I had a glass of red wine whiz we wait ... no fried squid this time ... it's a lot so we passed this time first time we Did not have them ... my wife saw the wimp next to her and she had the crab ravioli so Linda ordered it . While we waited the serve was cracking to oysters . 3 hit and it was open slid the knot under it and repo it 5 more times for for a table order... our dishes can't from behind us from another waitress... both plates were just great looking, and the plate was hot ...I finish by glass of wine to mou for my plate .. the tuna was lightly grilled .. I cut into it and it was gust right .. the taste was so good as if the had it come in the back door... I usually put lemony on my fish , shrimp clammy ect but this tuna was so Amazing not tonight... I copy not believe what a big piece if aha tuna it was. Like it was a Bone steak... it push the pasty and vegetables to the edge of my plate. At ect other restaurants on the peninsula if it's a special it would be a small piece of fish like it so expensive... ... the staff comes by asking if we need any thing ... they weave in and around ti clear a table for prolly wait out the front door... Their deserts are made in house and the one who may the tearmisu was a family friend who makes the best we have ever had.... I know I have had so many servings in 3o years... the best was an old it's which has an Italian restaurant in Castroville .. from the old country...him and his wife ... U say who made this and the server said the isn't.. I said tell him his was the best we ever had. In a few minutes he and his wife came out to our tablet to thank us... his was the picture of a family that came to California 50 years ago.... We took Linda's hid mother out to dinner with us many times and she was so hay to meet them ... then they talked in Italian for a count minutes... we took her out to dinner and drive up to the redo ... a big sign said closed down... But we have found the next generation here at the fish restaurant... it's like the same recipes from his father.. and must have been his grandmother recipes ... this time the staff has a a Hispanic families from South America ...hard working navy stopping just to make sure eco gets perfect service.... With the perfect meal ... there are other good restaurants on the per but if you want the best mess you ever had it's the Monterey fish house on Del Monte body ... call for reservations or stand out side the fro door. Send me home hungry and bill me $$$ for 2, at least i get to stay in my PJs. I'm glad I stuck through with the original plan and was blown away by the endless mindfuck of plates that permanently altered my brain chemistry. In all seriousness, the menu itself doesnt seem too special: crabcakes, ceasar salad, creme brulee. Very unassuming and no real twists to it. BUT -- everything was executed to PER-FECT-SHUN and I found myself just shy of licking every. frikkin'. plate clean. No stone left unturned - in this case, not a single kernel of corn or garnish was left uneaten. I'll jump right to the food: - Half dozen raw oysters: honestly might be the more underwhelming dish of the meal only because the oysters didn't have much flavor. No brine. No sweet. The mignonette was so great though! it gave the oysters what it needed. Add a flake of salt and we're cookin'. - Caesar salad: Good all around. The assembly is what made it so over-the-top. The classic caesar but with ribbons of parm, light and fresh anchovies, whole thinly sliced loaf of crouton that held that salad up like a house of cards but crumbles to touch. I was picking up every crumb that tumbled off to the table and was audibly slurping the ribbons of parmesan. - Crabcakes: Not just another crabcake. The batter was crunchy but didn't make the dish heavy. a cooling and smooth avo creme. but OH MY GOD the grilled corn on the plate really made the dish shine! It added a nice sweet pop and smokiness that made the dish more complex. Not even assembled in a cute pile, just scattered little kernels on a plate got me out here picking them up one-by-one like a mere peasant dusting the sidewalk for nickels. yes, humble me chef. I had to apologize to the waitress who cleared my plate for how embarrassingly clean my plate was. - Thai mussels: A cliche of a mussel dish on every modern menu. I've had a lot of versions of this dish and this plate wowed me in that the mussels were simply cooked perfectly. the sauce was not thin, not too pulpy nor salty. The sauce actually penetrated the mussels. The mussels were fresh, and no empty shells, which is a low bar but so common to see these days. There might even be a couple straggling that i was able to fish from the bottom. Just a clean dish overall. The fries were the perfect accompaniment. The walls of the extra starchy and crispy fries grabbed alot of the sauce for dipping. So smart. - Beef cheeks: Perfect textures all around. It feels wrong to complain at this point but I wanted more unctuousness from the protein. The beef was actually a backdrop to the polenta and mushrooms. i wanted more fat, more melty gelatinous tendon bites. what it produced though was a perfect fancy gravy for the polenta - so creamy and perfectly seasoned. A leafy green here and there. The maitaki mushrooms were cooked perfectly, not greasy. I was really just scraping the plate for the polenta and grabbing a bite of beef cheeks as sauce. Not a bad way to live by any means. - Acai sorbet: I almost never order dessert at a restaurant. It tends to disspoint and overpriced but i have never trusted a chef so much with a full meal so of course i got TWO desserts. The acai was accompanied with raspberries and granola. Super fresh and light. The acai broke apart upon touch, didnt slide around eventhough it's on a plate, but the plate choice was nicely textured to grip the icy sorbet (WHY AM I THINKING ABOUT THEIR PLATE CHOICE??) Gronola was not clunky and added a (rice) crispiness rarely found in granola. Such great care and attention to detail. - Orange and Tarragon Creme Brulee: I looked at the creme brulee with distain. Why did we order a 2nd dessert when the acai sorbet was already perfect. Orange and tarragon sounds like they're trying to sound "complex" but rarely delivers on balance and impact. I cracked the torched sugar top and gave it a chance, knowing that i havent been dissapointed tonight yet... and CUE the hallelujah angels choirs. I looked my partner in the eye and audibly said "YUMMMM... TRY. THIS. NAOOO.". We switched from the acai to the creme brulee and never stopped until the sides were hallowed out and every crystal of torched sugar was scraped off the walls. The torched sugar top cracked with ease and stayed CRISPYYYY the whole time. The custard was smooth, thick but light, and packed with orange flavor that was fiercely tempered by the herbaceous tarragon. The one sliver of orange peel candy was not supposed to wow me with it's texture and left me wondering how they managed to get the cracker-like crackle without too much sugar and not leave it leathery?? What a way to end a meal. On my way home, I got a twinge of the orange peel left in my teeth and it instantly brought me back to the magic that was the Mission Bistro. and it was HOT.

Right in the marina where dozens of boats are parked. Window views of the marina are easy to be had, just one big long room really. Old school traits: the crowd on a weekday lunch was 80% seniors, most seemed local as I can tell by their banter. The rest of the peeps were regulars who seemed to have a routine. The menu is seriously basic seafood town ie chowders, louie salads, seafood that can be griddled, fried or sauteed. Solid cooks that can execute clean plates. And the clincher old school trait Sandbar had, was a bowl by the entrance/exit they gave away free match boxes with their logo. I haven't seen that in decades! It hit home for me cuz I used to collect restaurant/bar matchbooks in my younger years. So crazy to run into them again as they are no longer normalized. Glass Sauvignon Blanc ($10/5*) Perfectly chilled, fruity without being sweet, great balance. Went great with bites of the seafood throughout the meal. Clam Chowder ($8/cup/4*) Solid. Creamy and thick but not excessively stodgy. Good clams and potato ratio. But very herb-y, as in dry herbs cooked into the soup. Great with the sliced sourdough given upon seating. Calamari Appetizer ($14/3.5*) For some reason I thought this was going to be deep fried breaded calamari, the cut tubes along with a few tentacles. But this was thick, bite-sized squares cut from a big calamari steak. It was breaded in fresh bread crumbs and lightly fried, so no significant crispness. Just a mild and soft breaded exterior. I had to salt it and dip it in either tartar or cocktail sauce. It was fine but I was just looking for something more flavorful and crisp. I still enjoyed it, just threw me for a loop. Lunch Sand Dabs ($23/4*) I was torn cuz I wanted to try their special of the day which was a Halibut dish with a Tomatillo Butter Sauce; but I also wanted something very basic and local. It doesn't get any more Monterey than local sand dabs, which is like a small flounder that is mild and delicate. I also overheard multiple tables around me order it, so I simply couldn't dismiss the local's consensus. I did like that it was super plain where the fish fillets were allowed to shine. But after the first initial few bites, I was just wishing there were something else to elevate the fish, like a butter sauce or wine/parsley sauce. It did have a side of tartar sauce, which theirs is good with big hunks of capers and celery. But I just thought a warm sauce of some sort would have soaked into the fish nicely. Served with brown rice pilaf that had good flavor but was a bit too al dente for me, crunchy rice isn't my jam. But I took some of the fish home, and I made a quick 30 second garlic lemon butter sauce that indeed went well with delicate fish. So I was able to get some serious satisfaction after all. Irish Coffee ($15/5*) It was a cool and grey day, so I opted on this for dessert. Theirs is as old school as it gets, so it was perfect. Great way to end a meal, belly happy, sipping a well made coffee cocktail whilst watching the boats float on by. As a passing tourist, Sandbar did me just fine. They gave me the flavors and charm of Monterey without being around a ton of other tourist. More off the beaten path which is how I like to roll.

When I called to complain, the "manager" didn't believe me when I said I received fish instead of prawns, so he felt the need to verify with his kitchen...insulting, to say the least. He also kept calling me "boss", and left me on hold for long periods, which I didn't feel was respectful or good customer service.
