Home cooking and the best pies! We ordered food for takeout from here three times so far. Let me tell you: you will not be disappointed with the food quality or quantity. The summer salad was amazing--filled with fresh greens and fresh berries. The buffalo burger is not to be missed and the chicken fried steak rivals the best home cooking. Now, the pies: they come in many flavors each day. We tried the blueberry, peach/raspberry, apple/rhubarb, and boysenberry. All were mouth watering. Super cute little spot to grab a bite to eat on the way to Tetons. We stopped on a whim and the place was packed with what looked like locals, we got a seat outside because literally every single table inside was taken. My bf got the chicken pesto sandwich and it was delicious. The chicken was very moist. I got a salad with chicken but it was thinly sliced chicken and pretty dry. The salad was otherwise food and came with a unique tangerine vingerette dressing. The sweet potato fries were yummy! I can see why this restaurant had several hundred more votes than any other restaurant, and was 4 1/2 out of five stars. It was absolutely delicious! My cranberry and Brie salad, with a grilled chicken breast on top, was loaded with so many extra goodies: 2 generous slices of Brie, delicious tomato slices, pecans, alfalfa sprouts, black olives, and hard-boiled egg. I chose the basaltic dressing, which complemented it nicely. My husband had the ahi tuna salad, and he raved about it. We were lucky enough to score one of the four outdoor tables, which made it extra nice for us since we were with the dog. We got a lovely hamburger patty for her, of course. I would have trouble going anywhere else after that gourmet entree I just finished. The menu offered hamburgers and sandwiches. They also offer breakfast items till 1 o'clock. There were lots of egg Benedict variations plus some of the normal offerings. If you're driving through, don't miss this café! read more

Whenever we are anywhere near Dubois, Wyoming, we never kiss at least one stop (yes, I said "at least" because it's often dinner one night, breakfast one day and always PIE, any time! )! The owners and all their employees are some of the best people we've ever met in a small town restaurant. They are friendly, super helpful (I'm gluten free and they double-check ingredients for me). Their homemade sangria in the summer is delicious; their pies are extraordinary. I had pie before I was gluten free and now I am jealous every time someone else gets to eat it! Great selection of pies, always! Food is good. Last week I had an exceptional butternut squash soup! Their sweet potato fries are so good. We happened upon this place while driving from Yellowstone National Park. It's a typical diner - small, friendly, clean. Service was a one girl show but very efficient. The food was fresh, tasty and plentiful. A jewel! read more

Came here several times while staying in Dubois. Staff was always super friendly, food always came out fast and the beer was always cold. This isn't fine dining, but everything we had from burgers to ruben to trout and the pie was all good. Prices are reasonable also. Definitely our go to spot while in town. read more

Got takeout from Cowboy Cafe our first night in Dubois. They're online ordering system is great and super convenient! The food itself was just fine. I had the Jack Mushroom Burger and subbed an Impossible burger. The mushrooms got missed on my burger. I think next time, I'd do a make your own burger and add all the toppings I wanted. As a side, I got a side salad. My fiance got the rib plate which was covered with bbq sauce. The ribs were good, not super tender. The sweet potato fries were good. The veggie side was the corn, carrot, and green bean mix that you find frozen. We also got a slice of raspberry and blackberry pie. The filling was tart and the crust was a little chewy, so I heated it up, which helped. The food was average, nothing to write home about. read more

Forked out $45 for a thin piece of Buffalo steak, very sad mixed carrots, broccoli and corn as mixed vegetables and some boxed mashed potatoes serve on a metal plate. The service was ok. My goodness! We came for dinner and we're so happy we came back for breakfast the next AM! The place is super cute, very friendly staff and super delicious. For dinner we each had a specialty hamburger; Hubby had the All-American with a side of homemade chips. I had the Mushroom Jack burger with a side of onion rings. DELICIOUS, and SO filling! The sweet waitress asked if we wanted to try some pie for dessert, which they are righteously known for, but we were both stuffed. Great place for breakfast- fill up fast as soon as doors open. I had them make egg, bacon biscuit. Best I've ever had. 3 pieces of thick sliced bacon and two eggs! Biscuit was obviously homemade. Went back the next am for takeout since I didn't have time to sit and wait. Server was very friendly. My takeout biscuit even came with a side of excellent hashbrowns - (not greasy at all). I heard from others that dinner their is excellent also. Be aware- closed on Wednesday- but this is common in town as there are only so many people to act as servers in town. read more

The breakfast we had was top- notch: My traveling companions' omelets and my Fiorentine eggs Benedict. I hesitate to order eggs Benedict in most restaurants and was hugely rewarded by taking the risk at Cowboy Cafe. The Hollandaise sauce was perfectly flavored with the chipotle pesto on the side so that I could confirm its excellent quality before adding. I added much of it to the excellent poached eggs with the crisp yet absorbing toasted bread underlying all. My plate finished as clean as possible! Our coffee cups were reliably refilled with great coffee. My only suggestion is to improve the women's restroom -- cleanliness and furnishings were not optimal. read more

The food leans more towards "comfort" than "kale", but manages to steer clear of being generic, SYSCO-style diner food you found in many small towns across our great land. The waitress treated us like we were local, and we got some tasty WY-brewed IPA's. I got some game (Elk) sausage. It came out on a metal plate and was delicious! Amazing pie selection! Cherry almond pie for me, and rhubarb blueberry for my friend. They have tons of combinations, and I really enjoyed that my pie wasn't overly sweet. Our food took a while for carry out, but the beef dip was well worth it and I highly recommend the sweet potato fries. This hit the spot after a hard day of hiking and driving. Only negative was on the COVID front; they could use some work but I couldn't judge if it was just this location or everywhere in the region. Not a single patron wearing masks, packed to the gills at lunch rush, no distancing, and the servers had their masks hanging down around their necks. The one exception was the cashier taking orders and that they had a couple tables outside. Overall, good solid cafe/diner food, but I would do carryout until this nonsense is over. read more

"Here I sit, ass cheeks a'flexin', just gave birth to a Texan." -Anonymous I discovered this couplet written on the men's restroom wall directly upon my arrival at the Cowboy Café. Now, being a native Texan and all, you'd think I'd be offended. Nope. Just made me laugh. But made me wonder: Do people in Dubois, Wyoming hate Texans for some reason? I'd been here a week already, and besides the couple who run the True Value Napa store across the street (be sure to read that review), I found the locals to be kind, down to Earth, and mostly friendly and welcoming. Does to owner of the Cowboy Café hate Texans? Perhaps he/she does. Otherwise, why would they leave such an offensive poem written on the bathroom wall? I'd just arrived and hadn't even sat down at the table yet, and already I was bracing myself for the worse. After all. there's no way I can hide my accent. They're going to know where I'm from, even if I can keep myself from telling them without their asking. I'll just keep my mouth shut as much as possible, and maybe they won't spit in my food. I left the restroom and joined my other two friends at the table on the front patio, our waitress was there taking drink orders. Before I could sit and order some water, one of my compatriots immediately informed the waitress that "we're from Texas" and the beans had already spilt before I could warn them not to open the can. Damn. Why do we Texans find it so necessary to tell EVERYONE where we're from as soon as we meet them? I'm not sure. We just can't help it. The waitress could have been feigning it, but she genuinely seemed okay with the fact that we were all Texans. In fact, she was quite nice and attentive throughout our entire lunch. Friendly and pleasant. Nevertheless, I checked my chicken-fried steak sandwich for any signs of saliva. It was totally free of spit, and quite good! In fact, it was the best chicken-fried steak I've had in a while! And that's sayin' something, cause I'm from Texas where they invented the damn thing! But here's why this place gets one of my rare 5 STAR reviews, even after they left the "Texan's Are Poop" poem written on the bathroom wall: The Pies. And there's many of them, way too many to try them all. The waitress brought out a whiteboard with a couple of dozen different pies written on it! So I tried three - mine (Apple Blackberry) and a bite of my each of my friend's (German Chocolate and rhubarb something-or-other). I normally don't like German Chocolate pie. Can't stand coconut shavings, love the flavor, but hate the texture. I know, it's weird... but based on just one single bite of this one, I'd chug down an entire German Chocolate pie from Cowboy Café all by myself! I'm not even sure what a rhubarb is, but that bite was heaven as well. As for my own Apple-Blackberry pie... I was licking the plate. Is licking all the pie goo off the plate a Texas thing? Probably. No wonder they hate us in Dubois, WY - we Texans are just a bunch of pie-plate licking turds! read more

I get that a fly or two may show up at a restaurant but just at our table there were three and seemed like one or two more buzzing at our feet. Western Wyoming has very few decent food options, but Cowboy Cafe is one of them. It stands out in WY, but would flop at home. So this is a four star review in the context of Wyoming. The place is very small and packed. The locals are really inconsiderate about seating. The seating is first come, first served. The single man ahead of us took over a six top outside. We were able to get another table pretty quickly and shortly after we came inside it started raining. Karma for that guy. The food was ok. The menu as a whole is American comfort food. I had the meatloaf sandwich, which I wouldn't order again, but the sweet potato fries were amazing. You would think that Wyoming would have good beef, but it was all in the frozen patty form. My husband had the burger, and he was satisfied with it. The meatloaf was definitely not made from scratch either. The pies on the other hand will knock your socks off. I will be back just for the pies. I had the blueberry almond crunch. The pecan pie looked spectacular too. Overall, definitely decent. But they could improve by making the menu smaller and having more food made from scratch. read more

It all depends.... I gave the Cowboy Cafe in Sheridan, Wyoming 5 stars. I split the homemade Reuben with my hubby. It was the best ever! My sister in-law had the cran-chicken sandwich- tender and tasty. My brother had the beef dip.. more than filling and good. Quick service, masked waitstaff, disinfected tables between guests. Cowboy Cafe in Dubois shouldn't even be in the same chain! Disgusting. Overcrowded cafe, no effort to distance, host had no mask; masks on most waitstaff exposed the nose and slipped down around the chin. Entrance was open with fly screens, but flies swarmed all over. No pleasant interaction with staff at all. Food (same sandwiches as Sheridan) were greasy; unappetizing. Places to eat are few and far between in Dubois.... better keep on driving. read more

Food was a 10/10 and the best restaurant we visited on our 5 day trip! You have your choice of seating with the luxurious outdoor tables because mountain air has been proven to enhance he flavor of smoked elk sausage. If you have an adventurous pallet like myself you should go for one of the items with the Old Yellowstone Bison, or the spicy elk sausage. But wait, I know what you're thinking, what if I want BOTH of these delectable foods?! Well the cowboy cafe has solved this puzzle in a glorious fashion. The wild sample platter - this dish is loaded with buffalo sausage and spicy elk sausage, hash browns, eggs, and your choice of toast or homemade biscuit (go for the homemade biscuit!). If the wild style does not suit your fancy they have mild options such as the ham and cheese skillet, which comes out sizzlin!! Or if you're a fan of the triple play you can take the route of my father and get the bubba burger combo. This home run hitting comatose inducing meal will change the way you perceive meal time. It's a burger accompanied by a pile of fries and then your choice of pie to top off the deal (ice cream and whip cream are optional!). This one put my father into sweet sleep rivaling that of Snow White while cruising down the curvy roads of Wyoming. The cowboy cafe cannot be contained to words in a review or even described with the 1000 words that comes in a picture it can only be fully understood by being experienced! So grab a 5 hour energy and hoof it up to Dubois, Wyoming and grab a seat at the cowboy cafe! Had the Wild Sampler platter, it was fabulous! The Bison sausage and Elk sausage were very tasty. Service is great, restaurant very clean, everybody very, very personable and easy-going and attentive. Wife had the bacon avocado burger and cannot stop talking about it.
