Stopped by here for breakfast on a road trip from Florida to Oregon. I had the cowgirl and my boyfriend got the cowboy and man was it good. Food was delicious my boyfriend says it's been the best breakfast on the trip so far. So fresh and tasty Staff is very friendly and helpful. Jen took care of us, she was very sweet! After reading reviews we decided to stop here for breakfast on our way out of Roswell and it was ok. I had 1 biscuit, eggs, sausage and pancakes and everything on my plate was cold. Butter would not melt on the biscuit and hardly melted on the pancakes. The pancakes could have been on the griddle a little longer.. they were very pale. If the food would have been hot, I'm sure it would have been better. My husband enjoyed his plate of pork chop, eggs and hashbrowns. His food was hot and he really enjoyed it. We stopped at this tiny cafe on the recommendation of friends. The food was okay, but the place seems to rely on locals and service was very poor. We both had hamburgers and after they were left at the table it was the last we saw of our waitress. There is an entrance sign that says "make America great again." They could do their part by starting with better service! read more

Tasty steak fingers, ample French fries and flavorful green beans made for a good lunch. Also included a simple dinner salad (lettuce and cherry tomatoes) and a cornbread muffin. Service was attentive and my order was served hot within 10-15 minutes. Sweet tea was sweet, just the way I like it. Italian creme cake...oh, my goodness...as good as my wife's made-from-scratch version! I didn't find this place until the summer before I moved. Huge bummer, because this is the real deal. You walk into this tiny little cafe that is across the street from the (best in town) farm supply store. A row of old cowboys look you up and over. I can't blame them for that, considering I'm not their demographic, lol. A little older lady in a grey beehive-esque hairdo sits you down and gives you good coffee. The breakfast is delicious. Mind you, it's a DINER. It will be greasy, but yummy greasy, not poison greasy. My eggs were a perfect over medium, and the biscuits and gravy rocked. Maybe not the best. Gravy. Ever, but very good and not straight from a packet. I would go once a week if I still lived there. Good stuff! Oh, and the walls are covered with old cowboy murals. read more

Know this: we are creating a yelp account here and now because we want MADLY to rep the wonderful Cowboy Cafe. In the ides of a road trip of 3+ weeks duration we found ourselves here around lunch time. We spent the morning swimming in Bottomless Lake Lea thus had ignited some pretty fierce appetites. But we still hankered for breakfast fare. We entered the busy little place at lunchtime. It recalled hometown diners whose biggest change in the past fifty or so years is that they've gone non-smoking. We were immediately pleased. A hostess made sure we were seated in a timely fashion. Our waitress was exuberantly friendly and when we asked what one of the specials was like she fetched us a sample of it! Honey, sugar, sweetie was how we were addressed. We asked about breakfast and she spoke to the cook and they cheerfully accommodated us though they were full-swing into lunch. I got huevos rancheros and Mr. Stranded Wolf got a classic spread of fried eggs, their homemade sausage and hash. The hash was thinly cut and crispy. The sausage was nicely spiced, delicious. He also ordered a side of biscuit+gravy. Now, I'm a damn fine baker and with any authority I might have I say that was maybe the best biscuit I've ever had. My massive plate was delicious. The eggs were cooked perfectly which is something I tend to be finicky about. Our waitress kept the coffee and water coming. After we'd licked the plates clean, powerless not to, moaning and clutching our bellies, the owner visited with us. He explained he'd just come to own it a few days ago and wanted to see what we thought. We raved. Hopefully he doesn't change it much! He started talking about how good the homemade desserts were. We admitted to having wanted to try the cherry pie but were just too darn full. We explained how this meal would fuel us for our long drive to Austin. Despite protestations he disappeared to return with a sliver of cherry pie. Delicious. It had a tasty cinnamon crust. We paid a very small price for the massive feast and the owner wished us safe travels. read more

I've been coming to the Cowboy Cafe since we moved to the area in 2007, and until recently, it has always been just "good enough." and plenty popular. But the best news is that about a year and a half ago, they were taken over by new owners/management and the quality is now an order of magnitude better than just "good enough." It's downright excellent. The new folks remodeled a good bit, adding some really interesting reclaimed wood tables and kind of bar-type seating. The atmosphere is nicer and the wait staff is all very attentive and nice. The cooks are tremendous. I am so consistently impressed by the meal that I find myself urging the waitress to tell the cook how much we enjoyed the catfish fillets, chicken fried chicken, burger... whatever it is that we had. It's ALL very, very good. The prices are not bad, considering the portions are quite generous. After the meal, drink, dessert and tip, we were still under $20 per person for dinner, even less for lunch. Monday through Thursday, they are open 6am until 2pm. Just recently I found out they are open Fridays and Saturdays until 9PM. That's great, because on Fridays you can get the fried catfish fillets, and they are the best I've had since I left Georgia. I don't know if the open late Fridays and Saturdays is a permanent schedule or just for the summer. There are not that many places in Roswell, NM where you can go to something local (not a chain) and sit down and get served and the food is great; but I'm glad I found this one. If you are in the area, you really should try them out. You'll be a regular like me. read more

What a great diner! My boyfriend and I were trying to find an alien-themed diner like we have seen on TV (there actually isn't one in Roswell) and we stumbled across the Cowboy Cafe. It looks like a dive diner but the staff is super friendly and everything is made from scratch. The food is cheap and tasty. ($6.50 for a cheese omelet with hash browns and a biscuit and gravy?!) I had the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were home-made, super fluffy and tender. The sausage gravy, was also made from scratch, with HOME-MADE sausage! Our waitress, who was so friendly, warned me it was extra spicy that day (on account of chef/owner making the sausage daily, so it sometimes varies, that day he put too much pepper in). And make sure to ask for the home-made salsa! Our waitress was so friendly. Cowboy Cafe must be a local's spot because she asked us where we were from since she didn't recognize us. She made sure we were well-taken care of and even gave us a free slice of coconut cream pie. She was a recent transplant from Seattle about a year ago and was loving her new life in Roswell. She also gave us some tips on what attractions to visit (Carlsbad Caverns). Even if you aren't hungry, stop in and say hi to the friendly staff! They will brighten your day. read more

My fiancé and I really wanted to love this place... But the food was just not good. His burger was greasy to the point of soggy and my patty melt was burned. The "cowboy fries" were limp and flavorless. Our water and iced tea smelled like whatever disinfectant they used on the glasses... And my water even had soap suds on the inside and outside of the glass!! The service was friendly and fast. We were seated within 10 mins, despite it being busy. The pie for desert was easily the best part of the meal... I will say that other people's food looked much more appetizing (even other burgers). read more

Great place, food, servers and atmosphere. If you want to go back into time, the Cowboy Cafe is the place, reminds me of down home kitchen but out west. The servers make you feel welcomed from the time you open the door until you leave, paying attentionto your evwry need and on thw spot with any request. One of my co worker's suggested this spot ro try before I headed out of town and he was right. They have the best chicken fried steak in Roswell, NM , you have to get there early as they close around 2 or 3 PM. The people are mostly locals heading in to grab a bite and talk shop, mostly everyine who was there this particular weekday was in town for the numerous gradutations. It's just west of Main Street(locals tell you that it's west of the City) tucked away on a gravel lot. Not much seating but get there early to enjoy some great food and company. read more

Charming Roadside appearance, awesome food. My husband had a giant breakfast burrito. My daughter's pancakes were giant. My french toast was just right. We bought their homemade desserts to go, one of which was a freaking unbelievable piece of cake: banana, pineapple, and pecan. Amazing. read more

Great dive cafe. Owner and staff super friendly, and the restaurant a country classic. Food is good if not great, prices easy on the wallet. Breakfast is the time to go. This local cafe did not disappoint. Friendly wait staff, huge portions, good coffee, excellent food. This place is about expectations. When stopping in a place as off the beaten path as Roswell, NM you might hope to find a Western style restaurant with rustic country and/or southwest decor. You're also expecting regional comfort food with large portions and affordable prices and a good following from the local population. This place delivers all of the above, right down to the old stage coach on the right side of the building for a quick travel photo! I had a chicken fried steak sandwich on Texas toast with onion rings. My wife had a BLT. Add couple of large glasses of iced tea and we were back on the road. We saw some delicious looking cakes on old fashioned glass cake stands at the bar near the entrance but were too full to indulge. Be sure to wear your seat belts. We had a dilemma with this one. The chicken fried steak was great~ literally the best one I have had in a restaurant in years (and as noted on prior reviews we are CFS snobs). Took a friend over for breakfast. There were a number of people waiting and we almost left then the line started moving and at least we were waiting inside. After being seated they quickly took our order and we then waited for our coffee. I have to admit, I like a good cup of coffee and didn't get it at the Cowboy cafe. I don't think they filter their water so you have a chemical taste of chlorine in the water and the coffee. The bacon and scrambled eggs I ordered were prepared just right as were the over easy eggs my friend ordered. The hash browns must have come out of a bag because they were not fresh and slightly over cooked. All in all I had expected better maybe the cook was having an off day or was rushed. Next time I will try Denny's or McDonald's where I know I will at least get a good cup of coffee then head over to the Cowboy for bacon and eggs. read more
