Sushi in Texas is like bbq in Hawaii. The words usually mean something else. Being part Japanese m'self, I have run the gamut of sushi, sashimi, ramen and bento spots here in Southlake and it is a motley crew of restaurants, we have accumulated, to be sure. Focusing now on Cowtown S. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. So I have good and bad news. On Mondays, when the Cuban chef is in the house - the product they produce can compete with the best of them. Sushi formed flawlessly. Sashimi - ideal cut. The tonkatsu and tempura are Tokyo perfect. GBD - with well seasoned crunch, void of any oiliness. A phenomenal Japanese experience. In Kapahulu (a Hawaiian Japanese food haunt) - there would be a line of locals waiting to get in. That's on Mondays. We just ate there (on Thursday). And the tempura-in-Texas curse is in full effect. Bland, limp, under cooked, and soft. Not adjectives you want to apply to any of the foods listed so far - but regardless, that's what you get. C level, fighting and failing to secure a C+. Sidebar: QR code virtual menus only. Wanted a quick grab and go sushi but they were out at the grocery store so I stopped here and I'm glad I did! The sushi was super fresh and absolutely delicious. We had not planned on eating at cowtown sushi but after standing in the doorway of Sushi Sam for 10 minutes unnoticed we thought we would give it a try. Upon arrival you are immediately greeted with a wonderful waterfall. A hostess sat us quickly in the only remaining two top in the place. It was Saturday night around 7 PM so I wasn't surprised by the ground. Lots of families with children. This is also not a surprise as they are next door to Urban Air. They have a modest beer, sake and wine list. I opted for the Sauvignon Blanc and it paired well with our beef fried rice and fancy sushi roll. I also had a piece of salmon and a piece on tuna and boy is the wasabi fresh. The wait staff constantly checked on us and we enjoyed our meal. Cowtown Sushi? What a combination. This restaurant is located in the less bustling side of Southlake, where you start to find more and more eating options. Although it's a sushi place, you don't feel like that much Japanese as you walk in like other over-decorated sushi houses. The decor is simple and welcoming. With the soft listening music playing, it makes a relaxing and comfortable place to dine in. So much about non-food business. Here comes the food part. I ordered a yellowtail sashimi with a regular miso soup. The soup was tasty - nothing spectacular, but quite decent. The sashimi was chilled nicely and as fresh as it could be. The taste was mild, delicate, and buttery. I like yellowtail because it has a lighter fish flavor than salmon. There were five chunky slices nicely placed on a white china plate. See my picture later. They were so good that I could easily have another five without shame. The place looks a bit dark as most of the furniture looks dark and gray. This place is one of the nicest sushi restaurants I've ever visited. When I was walking in was greeted by two beautiful young ladies who were very nice and held the door open for me. The menu has so many different options however I stuck to my usual California rolls. Came here for the first time and was not very impressed. When my regular sushi spot jacked up their prices we decided to try something new and that brought us to cowtown. The rolls were big and seemed fresh but that was the only highlight. First off, the floors smelled so STRONGLY of simple green so much so that it gave me a headache and changed the flavor of the food. If I wasn't having a major craving for sushi I would have turned around after first opening the door. I feel like I was eating at a gas station bathroom. Ordered the gyoza side and it was flavored in a way I'd never experienced before, wasn't impressed. The service was nice but maybe because we were the only ones in the restaurant? Very yummy! Chirashi priced at $20 was well priced for the value and amount served. Edamame appetizer was so little served for a big price. Kids beef teriyaki was a big value and perfect for a 9 year old. Nice atmosphere, perfect for a dinner date. read more

Without the help of Yelp, I probably wouldn't not have gone to this place because the outside of the store doesn't exactly look inviting. Nice little sushi restaurant off of Southlake blvd. It's in a shopping center so it looks a little odd from the outside appearance but the ambiance and decor inside is much better. The sushi tasted fresh and price comparable to other restaurants. I really enjoyed the salmon lover roll which is a riceless roll. Crab meat rolled in salmon and topped with a jalapeño in a siracha flavored sauce. The Mount Fuji roll was good as well. We also had the beef teriyaki bento box. (See picture) I felt like it was a little overpriced. $17 for a small piece of steak, one fried shrimp , a couple of fried vegetables, three dumplings , and side of rice . Service could of been better. After we received our menus the waiter seem to be preoccupied. We had to wave him down to place our order. After we received our food we didn't see the waiter again. The only thing I'd say would be to have descriptions of all the rolls. It made it harder to order because there were only descriptions of the specialty rolls. Solid A-OK. The quality is good, but it's a bit pricey. Our sashimi plate ($30) was beautiful (see picture). A bed of ice, cute trees made from wasabi and green onions. Copious piles of shredded carrot. A Christmas tree "ice sculpture" flickered in one corner. I wondered how much all this flash added to the cost? Don't get me wrong, the quality was good, it's just that I don't want all this useless garnish. We come for the food, not the show. We also had a Spider Roll, which was a decent size, just a bit short on the soft shell crab. It was an OK value at $7.50. Average price for a single piece of sushi was $2.75. Ambiance wise it's modern, with background music that sounded like Cirque du Soleil. Were it not for the one table with a slightly fussy child, it would have been a fairly romatic option. This place was okay. I came here because of the reviews and I was not overly impressed with the sushi selection or the food. I ordered 3 rolls: California (to share with my 7yo) and two others- basic and signature roll- nothing super fancy. First of all, the crab tasted smoked. In fact all the sushi tasted smoked. And I do not like smoked fish. It's a taste I cannot handle. I was hoping for freshness but got this cooked smoked taste. Not at all what I wanted. The prices were typical sushi prices. My son ordered the chicken terryaki Kid's meal. Loved it. He's really picky with food so I was pleased he enjoyed and ate all his meal. The kids meals were a little pricey at $7 a piece. Located in a shopping strip along Soutlake blvd so keep your eyes peeld, this place is a nice little sushi joint. Menu has variety of entrees and sushi. Some friends and I came here early on a Tuesday night and closer to dinner, more people came and went and looks like people were ordering take out as well. The decor is nice, dark walls and a sushi bar also to sit at. This place is like most standard sushi joints, variety of delicious rolls and alot of times my eyes are bigger than my stomach but I did pretty good with an order of chicken karage, Melting pot roll, tyson roll and bowl of fried rice which ended running me about $27. The chicken karage was just ok, not my favorite, it was almost over cooked and the batter was what I was used to on chicken karage. The two rolls were good and the fried rice was my favorite of it all. All had a good flavors and meshed well. Overall was a pretty good tasty place to go and good dining experience. read more

Best sushi in Southlake! Cowtown has a fantastic, relaxed atmosphere and the best fried rice anywhere. Several visits ago we got a whiff of the most delicious smell we've ever smelled. We realized it was the fried rice bowl from the next table over. We had to order some of our own and it didn't disappoint. Amazing with a great garlic taste! Now we have to get a bowl or two every time. As for the rolls, try the Mt. Fuji Roll! It's colorful deliciousness on a plate. As I travel across the country for work, I am always on the lookout for some decent sushi. I'm not into fancy maki - I just want honest pieces of fish along with a personable sushi chef. I've also ate at many of Chicago's finest along with some of NYC's finest, Los Angeles' finest, and well, (not the finest but still decent) places in Tokyo and Kyoto. I wouldn't compare this to Sushi Nozawa in Studio City or Sushi Yasuda in NYC, but maybe to an amazingly cousin of Toro in Chicago. Cowtown didn't look promising from the outside, but its a GREAT place. The staff is attentive and the owner is really nice and warm. The menu is heavy on the maki but the guy can make whatever else you want. Fish selection isn't deep but it has all the standards and for the nigiri he adds a twist to each. Not traditional, but still very good. I've been back a few time and looking forward to my next visit. Prices are very reasonable for the quality. read more

Okay Yelpers... took a small hiatus to get settled in this new to me metroplex that is DFW... But I'm back with a vengeance! Cowtown Sushi... Not sure if it was just an off evening or people just don't know what they are yelping about. Went on a Saturday, had our pick between this place and MK's, chose here on recommendation... should have gone to MK's... +1 star: Let's talk about the restaurant itself... very cool looking. It's dark and sexy. The bar is lit up with these cool blue lights with very nice decor. The bathroom has all black features with speckled glitter. A little scary sitting on a black pot... can't see what's in the water. But very interesting none the less... +1 star: Mt Fuji Roll... do yourself and your taste buds a favor and eat this roll. The dishes are constructed in very interesting and fun ways. It is art on a plate. The Mt Fuji Roll was fantastic, it'll blow your top right off! Also had the vegetable tempura that was perfectly crispyily delicious. -1 star: Although our party of two adults and two children was seated right away, they ran out of highchairs and there was a waiting list!!! Hold on a second... Are you freaking kidding me? So you mean to tell me that I have to hold my eleven month wiggle worm who would rather be walking while I try to eat my sushi with chopsticks (that while I am very good at using sometimes requires some concentration... if you know what I'm talking about.) It was ridiculous. There were two other families in the restaurant also holding their under 2 year olds. They offered a booster seat... yeah you get an 11 month old to sit in a booster seat without sliding out. Good luck with that one. -1 star: I asked them for my own variation of a roll. You know how I do, add this take away that, top it with that. Guy said "No problem, we make for you!" with all the confidence you would expect from a place with great service... well apparently it was a problem and they didn't make for me... I ended up stealing Steve's Mt Fuji roll and made him eat my botched roll. Would have told the server but we didn't see him again for the rest of the meal, don't know if it was because it was so dark in the restaurant or because he'd heard about the wrath of Cammy when it comes to my food not being right. -1 Star- I didn't try the sake this time but when we go again, if for nothing else the Mt. Fuji roll and to see if they can actually get an order correct, I'll judge it then. Bottom line: I've had better sushi. I've had better servers. I've seen nicer decor. I've been WOW'd by some of the best. This place as of now does not stack up, but I guess everybody can have their off nights. I STILL think the food is great. In fact, we definitely would go back but sadly the service isn't that great. It is barely adequate. The fact that I have to repeat myself once is fine because people forget but when you ask for things more than three times for MULTIPLE things, it's just not okay. I've been back SEVERAL times and SEVERAL times the service has been lacking. I have been even asked to move tables because for whatever reason I looked like I was nice enough to move even though we already ordered and had our drinks and the table next to us with the SAME AMOUNT who JUST got seated and didn't even have their silverware yet, and SAME SIZE table was apparently not good enough. I've been twice in the past month and this still is my favorite sushi in the area. I've been branching out and trying some new rolls. The Mt. Fuji is still my favorite but the "I need a roll" has jumped up to a close second. I also really enjoyed the Paradise Roll last night. A couple weeks ago the hubs ordered some of the tuna nigiri and although that's not my normal cup of tea, they were very fresh, the pieces of fish were very large, and I enjoyed them. I really don't know the difference between Americanized and authentic sushi, having never been to Japan, but I know what I like. And I love Cowtown! read more

My friend was visiting for a "Girls Day Out" and we were craving sushi. I told her about this place, mostly because I needed to stop by Hobby Lobby to pick up some stuff, haha, but also because my Mom and sister liked it when they went and they have very discerning tastes... We ordered California Roll, Shrimp Roll and Mt. Fuji Roll. We aren't the crazy adventurous type. It was definitely enough food for two women. California Roll was delicious and avocado creamy, some places do it right, some wrong... This one was RIGHT! The Fuji Roll was to die for! The crunch mixed with the creamy was superb. I highly recommend it! $30 for all that and two drinks, we split the bill so it was perfectly priced, I felt. Next time I'm craving sushi, definitely coming back! The ambiance is dark and calm. My friend and I dislike loud restaurants, a staple at most sushi places in California (where were from). It was great being able to enjoy quiet conversation. The only thing that almost turned us away was the outside, my friend was convinced it was closed, the blinds were drawn and the "Open" sign was off.
