I have genuinely never left a review on any restaurant before on any platform ever, but I was compelled to do so after the last meal I had at this place tonight. For appetizers I had the gyoza (solid), crab rangoons (fine), and the shrimp tempura (awful). The frozen shrimp tempura from Costco is far better. For my main course I got the crispy beef as well as a 6 piece spicy tuna roll. The crispy beef was quite possibly one of the worst entrees I have had a restaurant ever. It legitimately was so crispy to the point where it tasted like there was no beef in the actual entree and that it was just breading. The sauce and vegetables it was smothered in were mediocre. I have had it before about 2 years ago and would get it regularly. It always hit the spot and was delicious, but tonight it was far from that. The spicy tuna roll on the other hand was pretty solid. The other individuals in my party got the chicken katsu as well as the mermaid roll. The katsu was bland, overcooked, and flavorless (the sauce sucked as well). The mermaid roll looked like it had been sitting in a fridge for 3 days waiting to be eaten. The service was fine, the ambience is nice as well. I have been coming to this spot for about 5 years. It was my first time tonight in about 2 years and I don't plan on going back unfortunately. this place is more like a 3.5 star out of 5 stars. We were craving sushi and didn't want to travel too far. The interior of this place is simple. They have a few tables around the windows and some seats at the chef's bar... i suppose if you wanted to get omakase, that's where you would sit. We ended up getting a few nigiri, sampler and two rolls. The reason why this place is getting a 3.5 out of 5 stars is that one of the rolls was a baked roll, and to be honest it wasn't like the other baked rolls, we had. This "baked" roll was a California roll under a bed of cooked random items.... don't think i've ever had a baked roll like this, and i don't think i'd ever get it again. We had driven by Sushi Sam a number of times coming and going to places closer or in the Southlake town center. There had been times we had kind of known it was there but always had other food plans when seeing it and would forget about it due to its unassuming location ... plus it being on the side of the road where we'd have to make a left across traffic getting too it, and it being more on the easier to get in and out of when coming back from the town center. I had gotten an ad for it and finally delved into checking out their menu online. Their extra vegetable roll options, that most places don't have, really caught my eye. Options like Shiitake Roll, Asparagus Roll, Fried Onion Roll, Spinach Roll & Pickle roll. (Pickled veggies of some sort, not pickles.) As well as a chicken teriyaki roll that I knew my kids would also go after, along with the various veggie rolls. Service was outstanding during our visit. We appreciated having the extra veggie roll options, adn as I called it the kids liked having the chicken teriyaki roll. Shame on us for ignoring this treasure of a place for so long! I'm always on the hunt for good nigiri, and Sushi Sam offers very generous portions at a great price! The salmon was a standout, I think next time I'm here I will just get two or three orders of the salmon nigiri as my meal. This place is my families favorite spot. Reliable and so delicious. I will highlight that the tuna is always exceptional, in any roll I've tried, like the Hawaii or spicy tuna maki roll. My wife had gotten an ad for Sushi Sam on her social media, and went to check out where they were. We had driven past them a number of times heading to the Southlake town center, and usually they are on the other side of 1709 from where we are coming to head to what we are going to do that we hadn't really considered them before checking out their menu. Service was outstanding, it did feel like they were overstaffed for the amount of customers they had. We decided to go heavy on veggie rolls due to the number of different options they had compared to our normal places. While it was all good, the only thing that stood out was our one meat option that we got for our 8 year old ... a chicken teriyaki roll (cooked.) Prices are a little on the higher side as well when we compare rolls that we can compare to other places we do go to. (I'll give them credit on that, they are in Southlake.) We will likely return at least a couple more times, especially with our 16 year old in tow with us to try that teriyaki roll, and to try items we didn't get a chance to try this time around. Nice family owned business in the Southlake neighborhood. Very good service (kind and respectful hosts and waiters), along with fresh ingredients. The bento boxes, sashimi, rolls and nigiri are all above average in terms of taste, fish-to-rice ratio, and presentation. Sushi Sam's definitely hits the spot when you want a good sushi experience in a clean/safe neighborhood (plenty of parking available). One of my favorite places to come to celebrate birthdays or other special milestones! It's fun to watch the sushi be made and the service here is usually very quick! The flavors are really well developed and the food is always fresh. As with most sushi places, it can get pretty expensive quickly; however, it's worth the splurge every once in a while! Although the vegan options are very limited the vegan sushi was delicious. I had the vegetable roll, the cucumber roll and the avocado roll. The avocado was my absolute favorite. This place used to be the best sushi place in Southlake, a hidden gem some people will said. Unfortunately the last 3 times we have visited has been a disaster. From the terrible and super slow service to the quality of the food. I am not sure if there were a change in management but they really converted this place into a terrible option. Food came at different times for the guess some 40 minutes apart. Unavailable items on the menu when you ordered. To just mention a few things that were consistently wrong. I hope they up their game and go back to the level they used to be. But for now it is a pass. read more

Came here on a Saturday evening early, around 5:30pm. My boyfriend and I usually like to go early to beat the crowds. It was still pretty packed when we arrived but we got sat right away. It was a good atmosphere even though it was busy. Very relaxing and quiet. Cute decorations all over the restaurants with lanterns and flowers The waitress came shortly after. I ordered a glass of wine, miso soup, salmon roe sushi, and the fried rice bowl. The miso soup came first along with a salad. The salad was tasty for lettuce and carrots, it had a sauce that made everything tie together. The miso soup was very flavorful, had a good amount tofu in it as well. I hate when restaurants make a miso thats bland, but this one is not. My fried rice bowl came shortly after, which made me ask the waitress where my sushi went. I think she forgot about the sushi, but she rushed the order at the sushi bar and I got it soon after that. The beef fried rice bowl is HUGE, it literally lasted me 2-3 meals. I even took it for lunch the next day. It had tons for flavor and the beef was cooked perfect. Not too chewy, or thick. The salmon roe sushi was also really tasty. I wish it had more salmon roe on top but the rice was cooked perfect and it satisfied my craving. I'm only giving this 4 stars because they did forget about my sushi, and even though the waitress came over to us quickly, I feel like at one point we were also forgotten about for a few minutes. But over all , even though it's a bit pricey the quality is really good and I will definitely be back here! read more

The first couple of times we came here our experience was great but the last 2 times leads me to write this review. We had to wait entirely too long for our food. Multiple people came in & ordered AFTER we ordered & got their food BEFORE we did. I literally saw someone order sushi & get it 3 minutes later but our 4 sushi rolls take 30+ minutes??? & then the way our roll looked. My wife and I love all Asian food, and after someone recommended this restaurant, we gave it a try. Sadly, disappointed. Had contact with 2 servers, a greeter that seated us and our actual waitress. Small serving for the price and worst of all you have to pay $3.25 for an extra scoop of rice which is a huge cost for what you get.
