I treated myself to sushi for lunch. I had never been to Sushi Sakana, but I pass by it regularly. I have checked out a couple of other sushi places in the area and have been...underwhelmed. When I try out a new place I typically go for their sushi bento. You get a little variety of things in a charming presentation. I loved that you got to choose your two sides. The sushi and sashimi are set and it comes with a salad, miso soup, and several options to choose from. I got the California roll and the vegetable tempura. They also had shrimp tempura, gyoza, egg rolls, seaweed salad, squid salad, and vegetable croquettes. There were two lovely ladies working the tables and two men behind the sushi counter. There were only about four other tables there when I was, but I did see people coming in for takeout. The service was fast and friendly. I was also pleased to see the chefs behind the sushi bar preparing everything to order. It was so fresh. The sashimi was cut thick and had the perfect texture. The nigiri was not too much for one bite. The tempura was perfectly fried and crunchy, and the salad was cold and refreshing. It was a lot of food and I couldn't finish it. But it was SO satisfying. Came in for the lunch special on a Monday afternoon and I'm so glad I did! The restaurant has a more formal style of atmosphere, but still welcoming enough for a casual meal. I tried the bento box special which entails: miso soup, salad (with your dressing of choice), 2 sides and a base entree. I chose seaweed salad and shrimp tempura as my sides. Bento box lunch special price ranging from approximately $15-24 lish before tax/tip depending on the entree base you choose. The miso soup was served piping hot and was sooo flavorful. Prob the best quality miso I've had! But the teriyaki steak was absolutely the star of the show. So tender and full of good flavor. I was sooo full and satisfied. Service was amazing as well. I was frequently checked on by my server Alisha . She was very kind and professional. Very great lunch deal as I spent ~$21 with tax + tip. My best friend took me to this amazing sushi place in Southlake, she's not a massive fan of Sushi, but she knows I am and she said she'd love the food here so she wanted to bring me... Good call. I got the salmon sashimi and the yellowtail, they were generous portions and a very tasty beautiful fish... Just plain delicious. I also got the crazy boy which had coconut shrimp on top and it was awesome. She got the James Bond which she had had before and really loved and she also got the crunch. She enjoyed hers and we had a marvelous time. The chef there is amazing, his work was just beautiful and very well done. The weight stuff was OK, but it was really hard to get refills on drinks. I just had iced tea. But I think they were working in the back on the dinner rush that was gonna come soon... The restaurant itself is beautiful. The reviews of this place must be from their own staff or friends... The service is good, but the quality of the sushi (hand roll, sashimi, and rolls) is very mediocre and small-- stingy to say the least. The menu is also outdated and without price. The sashimi is unevenly cut, some very thin, as if they chose which one to cut less on... Unless they update their portion size, I think even half the price is just "acceptable." Overall, this is not a place to eat a complete meal. It's quite sad, disappointing, and unfortunate we left as if we had appetizers for $30 per person. read more

I'm going to jump on the bandwagon and declare this place as the best sushi restaurant in Southlake! Never mind that its the only sushi restaurant I've visited in Southlake. But in all seriousness, I've been to plenty of places in neighboring cities and this one really is among the best. So I can see why they have such glowing reviews. We got the spicy edamame and the Yellowtail Heaven as appetizers. The Yellowtail Heaven was so good that we ended up ordering a second one. Then we got the No Problem, Tropicana, Special Dragon, lobster and double tuna rolls along with tuna sashimi. Each one was like a work of art and tasted just as delicious as they were beautiful. I couldn't pick a favorite because everything was so exceptional. Also, they get bonus points for bringing all the rolls out at the same time. I can't remember the last time I went to a sushi place that did that. At the end of our meal they surprised us with a complimentary dessert which I can only describe as a kind of ice cream sandwich, beyond that I don't know what else was in them. What I do know is that they tasted great. The final pleasant surprise was when the bill came. Unlike many other sushi places, our stellar meal actually didn't cost a small fortune. read more

Sushi Sakana rolled out a hand reel on social media (I saw it on IG) featuring their new hand rolls, and I immediately made plans to go try them out. For the price, they were amazing. There was a set of 3 and a set of 5 for $39, I went with the 5 plus an extra one. If you have a chance, definitely worth checking them out for the deal! Our waitress was very attentive, was patient with us while we were deciding, and let us the ins and outs of the menu when we had questions. It was incredible. They have a really good happy hour m-th which is when I went but I highly recommend the baby yellow tail and tropical roll and I will have to come back for the spicy kiss. We were seated immediately, and our server came right over with menus and a checklist on which we could enter our orders. I had the Fantastic Roll and Spider Roll, and the servings were generous and tasty. My wife had a couple of standard rolls, and they too were satisfying. The pricing is fair, the dining area is very clean, and the service was timely and polite. Too, our orders came out pretty quickly and looked as good as they tasted. Will definitely come back and try other rolls and dishes. A nice, well-priced option if you just want a casual but quality meal. Rich and I were enjoying our dinner and were almost finished when a friend texted and asked if she, her sister and her niece could join us. I felt awful asking if we could move to a 4 top in the middle of our meal! I felt especially bad because they were so busy! I have never seen that many people I there - good for them! Anyway, the servers reacted beautifully and moved our things to a new table. Things have changed quite a bit in the past year or so, and I truly think it is largely in part of Esther joining as manager. The place settings and flowers are so nice, but I've mentioned that before. Tonight we noticed that their food presentation looked as if they had taken it up a notch as well! This place was great! Friendly staff, clean tables and establishment, and the food was delicious! Spicy Pork Bento: my wife loved this. The pork was tender and packed with flavor. She really loved the miso soup, shrimp tempura and California roll as well Brussel sprouts: I was very surprised by these. They were lightly fried leaves of brussel sprouts and tossed with some kind of sweet and savory soy sauce. They had a light crispy texture and were very addicting. Gyudon: the Gyudon was overall good, although some beef pieces were pretty fatty and hard to chew through. And there was a lot of sauce soaked into the rice. That might be a traditional way of preparing it, not sure, but it could be improved upon in my opinion. Overall, I was satisfied with it, I'd probably just order something else next time. I really wanted to love this place since they're opening one closer to me in Coppell. But I'm sad to say I'll probably never return to either location. The food LOOKED great! The Sunomono salad looked nice. But it had a lot of rubbery lettuce and what felt like a jar of pickle slices. Little Katana in Irving has a Sunomono with no greens and a more reasonable amount of marinated cucumber and Katana's is $5 cheaper. Smaller but much more appealing. I didn't understand the over-abundance of pickles whose taste pretty much over powered everything. Maybe one or two slices might have done the trick. The Chirashi bowl: also nice looking. And LOTS of fish. And some of the fish was good. But overall it was not as fresh tasting as it could have been. Regarding the service: I had nearly half my soup left and the waitress tried to remove it from the table without even asking if I was finished. Odd. Then they brought the Chirashi out without any wasabi or ginger. We had to ask for it. Isn't that pretty much a given? ‍ Ambiance was nice. If you're looking for some FRESH & AFFORDABLE SUSHI, look no further!!! I came here with a party of 5 on a weekday around 8pm. It was pretty busy but we were able to get seated right away. It's located on the main street and offers plenty of parking. The quality of the food here is A+++. We got the agedashi tofu, crispy calamari, and takoyaki for the starters. The fried food wasn't overly battered so it wasn't heavy and was the perfect amount of crisp. The sushi was all super fresh and my family said it melted right in their mouths. They have a wide selection of cooked rolls as well! The dragon roll and baked salmon roll was so flavorful and delicious. The service was admirable! Our server and rest of the staff were all super friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is very clean and the interior made it feel like a higher end restaurant than your average local sushi restaurant. What a pleasant find. My daughter and I discovered this spot by accident. Let's lead with the service - it was great! The staff works as a team. We didn't have a server, we had all of staff. The beef steamed dumplings tasted fresh. The wrapper was thick enough to hold the seasoned filling, but thin enough to allow the dipping sauce to penetrate. The sushi rice could have used a touch more flavor, but it was nice and room temperature-perfect for nigiri. The Valentine sushi, rice-less with a touch of mango, was a delicious discovery. Our new go-to local sushi place! Sushi Sakana is right off of Kimball and Southlake Blvd in Southlake and there are already several really good sushi restaurants in the area but IMO this is the best one for value. Pro-tip = come at lunchtime. They have lunch specials 7 days a week and we came today (April 24) at 1pm and there was no wait (vs a 30-40 min wait at Zen Sushi). We ordered the 3 1/2 rolls (great selection and good deal for $15), a sushi and a sashimi special and a chicken katsu bento - all from the lunch menu. The sashimi was the standout - 10 pieces for $20, including huge (and I mean huge) slices of yellowtail. We also ordered a takoyaki app (delicious) and since our son had come up from Austin for the weekend w his girlfriend, we splurged and ordered some Uni shooters. Yuko our server was terrific - so friendly and quick to take care of anything we needed. This is a hidden gem (which is weird since it has a 4 1/2 star Yelp rating) and we will definitely be back!!! read more
