    Undercooked steak.

Our server names Lucy S didn't bring our biscuits out until the same time we got our food, which renders them pointless. We also had ordered a steak medium rare and it came out extremely undercooked. When it was brought to our servers attention , she stated the kitchen had been having issues with the meat thermometers as they are broken. She took the steak and 10 minutes later brought the same steak and sides back out that had already been cut into and left us with cold and dry mashed potatoes and cold shrimp. When this was brought to her attention she said she'd bring us biscuits "on the house" even though the biscuits are complimentary. Lucy also stated that there was nothing she could do about it since it was a meal and was speaking in a very demeaning tone even with me being as polite as possible throughout this whole experience. All of our food was also warm, not hot. Nothing we got was fresh and hot. The lady at the register was super nice and understanding and called over the manager so we could talk to her about our experience. It seemed as though this had been happening all night in the way she responded. They split off that portion of the meal so we didn't have to pay for something we couldn't even eat.

Another trip to the OBX and a stop at CB Hillcrest. Arrived around the lunch hour and surprised to be seated immediately on arrival. Kendra was our server. Managing a full load ain't easy and she did a great job for us! My son and I both ordered the Biscuit Benny. CB's answer to eggs Benedict. Biscuits used! My son had his with hash Browns, fried peaches and ham. I had the hash browns, fried apples and sausage. Gotta tell you the food was excellent. The negative? We never received ketchup and hot sauce. And my Half n Half was delivered and billed as unsweetened iced tea. No problem as everything was good and service excellent. Maybe we'll stop by again on the way home from the OBX. Well worth the pit stop after driving 285 miles straight with another 80 ahead for us. The most I've driven on nearly two years...

Cracker Barrel is a no brainer. I love their shop and always seem to find something in there while waiting for a table. We came for lunch and thought we would have enough time to eat and head back to work. I added my name to the wait list online prior to arriving so we got our table right ways and ordered our food right away but our food took forever to come out. The restaurant wasn't even busy. I'm guessing they were short staffed. At any rate the food was still good. My fave had to be the beignets with the pecan maple dipping sauce and my latter was really good too. The pancakes are always a must as well with the hot maple syrup in the mini glass bottle. It's a great place to eat and shop but if you are in a hurry and need a quick lunch, this isn't the go to spot.

    Dumplins

I was eating dumplings and found SOMTHING in my food it stinks too but other than that it was good.

    I mean. Come on.

They say, if you built it, they will come. For Cracker Barrel, their motto is, "if you burn it, they will come". I mean I get the whole pandemic thing. I get the whole nobody wants to work theory. But come on. It's Cracker Barrel. First off. The server didn't even know they sold sourdough bread. How? I have no clue. Second, I order a side of sourdough toasted. This is what he brings out. Which is amazing in itself. Like this is your standard? The best part is he hid it under an untoasted piece. Like wtf. So when my wife mentions it at the end of our meal, he states a side order of toast is only one piece, and he slapped the second one on it to hide it. Gee thanks. That's helpful. If I could give a 0.5, I would.

We had a great time we went on a Friday around 5:30 no wait for a table of four! We were instantly greeted by our waitress. Only thing we had to wait on was biscuits and cornbread. Good was great also came out fast. The fried chicken was a lot! Cooked perfect with great flavors. My kids loved the hash rounds with the kids meals. The store was pretty busy but we got to look around and picked up some goodies!

I don't remember the name of the drink I got because I asked the lady at the order window to make whichever one was both fruity and sweet. I'd give the drink an 8/10; it was pretty good, but became watered down really really fast. Didn't try any food off the menu because we were already planning to go eat after we left the farm, but after looking at the menu, I definitely see myself going back here soon to try their food and whatever new seasonal items/drinks they'll be adding to the menu in the next month or so. The waitress who helped us was incredibly nice and took the time to answer all of my questions. Unfortunately, my excitement was cut short when I went to order the #6 breakfast special and found out the fried rice was pre-made with ham, and there was no option to get it without meat. Since the fried rice was out, I pivoted and ordered the #1 Special: 2 eggs (requested soft scrambled with cheese) 2 pieces of bacon (asked to hold the bacon) White toast Home fries Side order: Egg rolls to go The execution of breakfast was pretty disappointing. The eggs weren't soft scrambled, the cheese on top wasn't melted, and the home fries were very hard. To top it off, the whole plate came out at room temperature. I didn't make a fuss or send it back because it's a small, family-owned restaurant and they clearly have a lot of loyal regulars who love them. Overall Verdict: Breakfast Food: 5/10 Egg Rolls: 7/10 The service alone makes it worth giving them another shot. While breakfast wasn't a hit for me, I would definitely return to give their lunch menu a try.

What Made It Memorable Photo 1 shows the Reuben sandwich from October 10, 2024, and it was unforgettable--the kind of sandwich I could not stop thinking about. Since then, my family and I have returned at least once a month. When family visited from out of town, this was one of the first places we wanted to take them. What Has Changed Fast forward to 2026, and the quality over the past few months has gotten worse with each visit. The sandwich no longer feels like the same thoughtful, well-made item that made us keep coming back. * The bread seems different. * The ingredients feel sparse. * Today's sandwich was burnt. * The dressing was missing. Overall, the quality control just does not feel consistent anymore. I truly enjoyed this place, but I cannot justify paying $17 for a sandwich that is so clearly not what it used to be. A Hopeful Note The employees are kind and friendly, and the service is usually quick even when the restaurant is busy. The food used to be amazing, and I am genuinely hoping this is just a bump in the road and that the team can make a few adjustments to bring the quality back to what it was.

Their retail area is also much larger, featuring an impressive selection of branded T-shirts, hoodies, mugs, coffee beans, and other merchandise for those who want to take a little piece of Pale Horse home with them. We arrived just before the Saturday morning rush, which proved to be perfect timing. No sooner had we settled into our seats with our lattes than a group of nearly thirty people walked through the door. It didn't take long for the shop to become a lively gathering place. Despite the growing crowd, the atmosphere remained welcoming and unhurried. Whether you're looking for a quiet corner to enjoy your favorite espresso drink or simply stopping by to grab a coffee on the go, Pale Horse has created an environment that encourages you to stay awhile. In addition to an excellent selection of coffee, espresso, and handcrafted lattes, they also offer a variety of fresh baked goods if you're looking for something to enjoy alongside your drink. Pale Horse Coffee continues to prove that great coffee is only part of the experience.
