Sadly, all meals were barely warm, overcooked bacon, "scrambled egg" looked like an omelette - cold temp. The only saving grace was our sweet server Destanee. Saturday, 6:30pm Bathrooms? Not a port-a-potty, but close.

The quality of the food has gone downhill. The interior decor could use some improvement too.

Finally, our drinks were taken by the bar tender and before we could get them we were seated. The drinks were never put in or she just flat ignored us. (We both saw her write the order down.) Our server finally had to re order them, we had now been there 22 minutes with no cocktails. Absurd. Anyway, our server Jerrod was great but everything else was subpar. I've made better scallops in my sleep and the presentation was an absolute train wreck, looked like it had been thrown on the floor and then scooped back up. The charcuterie plate was decent and the locally sourced cheeses were great, especially that Brie. But this place is overrated, at best. I can't recommend it for the price. Pretentious, overpriced and quite boring, not to mention unprofessional.

There are so many options in this lovely town but I made a reservation at Zynodoa because I have been on a farm-to-table kick lately. The servers and hosts were all lovely, interacting with both the guests and each other professionally and amicably. My server Sarah gave me as much attention as anyone else, even though I was the only person dining alone. I ordered the tomato and burrata appetizer. I am not a big raw tomato eater but I knew if these were truly farm-to-table, they would taste good, and they did. The flavor felt like a combination of sunshine and a warm hug! The cheese tasted like a sweet kiss. The portion was substantial, and there was balsamic reduction and a generous amount of coarse pesto. I ate the whole thing! For the main course I ordered the flat iron steak. Because I was traveling and didn't want leftovers, I asked the server for a smaller portion than listed, but either I wasn't clear or it wasn't an option--It's okay, though. I ordered the steak medium rare but it was a shade above rare; again, okay. Sides were good but I added salt. The meal was a bit pricey but probably fair given that it was sourced locally. I agree with some of the other reviewers that the chef is heavy handed on the sauces, which may not be everyone's cup of tea. Oh, I ordered the pinot noir and it was good, smooth, balanced. Overall impression of Zynodoa was it felt like visiting the home of a friend with a garden who loves to cook and share with her friends. The portions were generous and the seasoning was substantial. I highly recommend to anyone visiting Staunton.

They were so enthusiastic that they didn't leave until we walked inside. They really like this place! We got two appetizers to try - mixed green side salad with homemade balsamic dressing, and Rustic hummus plate. Salad - I don't know why they call it side salad. It's very big. And it was fresh, with a tasty dressing. Hummus plate - a large portion of hummus, with olives, roasted garlic, mushroom and artichokes with crackers. It's a tasty hummus, but I'm not sure that the garbanzo chili-crisp topping on the hummus added to the dish. I really liked the roasted garlic. (The garlic is very flavorful and delicate - you may not want to order this if you are sharing on a first date!) For entrees, I got the Tuscan Salmon and my partner got the Braised Lamb. Salmon - the salmon was well prepared, with a char on the outside, but soft meat inside. I think it could have used a tiny bit of seasoning. I asked for the sauce on the side. The sauce is a sun-dried-tomato cream sauce. It's very good. The Rustic mashed potatoes with capers were less than "ok". The white coating on the potatoes had no flavor and seemed to be basically a plain milk-base. Even with the capers, the mashed potatoes were bland, like potatoes coated with milk. They needed seasoning. The brussel sprouts were in general very hard and chewy. They had a nice flavor, but the hardness/chewiness was annoying. There was a lot of potential with the sides (they looked great), but both the potatoes and brussel sprouts were disappointing. Lamb - excellent. Well prepared, tasty and the carrots were flavorful. My partner noted that their brussel sprouts also were hard and chewy, but not to the same extent as mine. The service was mixed. On the plus side, our appetizers and entrees came out at appropriate times (we finished one and the other came shortly after), but, on the negative side, our water glasses were empty a couple of times and it took a while to get them filled. (The issue with the hard/chewy brussel sprouts heightened our need for water, plus, we just drink a lot of water.). Honestly, as the evening went on, I felt less and less welcome there and I really can't understand why. The restaurant was less than half full during our meal. I just don't get it. Before tip (and I did tip 20 percent), we spent $100, and I'm overall disappointed.

We had 5:30pm reservations and were seated immediately. The host was warm, acknowledged the occasion, and honored my request for a quieter table by placing us in a bay-window nook. Unfortunately, that's where the positives ended. The space echoed so badly we could barely hear each other, and the setting sun combined with the AC being accidentally turned off made the area feel like a sauna. Our water glasses were filled within minutes, so we thought service would be smooth. Instead, we sat for another 15 minutes before anyone greeted us--while a table seated after us was helped promptly and served at a noticeably faster pace. I understand large parties require attention (there was a group of 10-12 nearby), but as a former server myself, I've never allowed smaller tables to feel forgotten. When our server, Lucian (sp?), finally arrived, we immediately placed drink and appetizer orders because we were already starving. The appetizers came out about 20 minutes later--still before our drinks. The brussels sprouts were excellent and worth the wait. The biscuit basket was good, though the butter-to-biscuit ratio felt off, and the apple butter was surprisingly delicious. Our entrées didn't arrive until at least 45 minutes after that. The pacing was simply poor, and we consistently felt like an afterthought. While our server was polite, he didn't initiate conversation, offer suggestions, mention happy hour, or acknowledge our daughter's birthday. He didn't even suggest dessert. Meanwhile, the six-top behind us--seated well after we were--was wrapping up their meal as ours was just being served. The food presentation was beautiful. The pot roast, however, was underwhelming. It lacked seasoning and sauce, and the vegetables were forgettable--very few potatoes, no carrots. "Not your normal pot roast" was accurate, but not in a good way. The shrimp and grits were excellent, with great seasoning and a flavorful sauce. The salmon was moist and well-prepared, though it still had a few scales on the end of the filet. Once we finished eating, we again waited for our server to return. We eventually had to wave him down for boxes and again to request the check. Parking in the back was convenient early in the evening, though I imagine it becomes difficult later. Would we return? Unfortunately, probably not. We've been treated better, served more efficiently, and appreciated more fully at other restaurants--including one almost directly across the street. What we hoped would be a memorable celebration ended up feeling ho-hum at a high price--too high for the experience we received.
