Literally stumbled upon this restaurant at the tail end of a train riding road-trip. 2 Chessies outside...the restaurant is in an old freight station and beautiful inside. To the left is a large seating area that I didn't know was there until I went to the restroom. The bar is stunning. We were served by Jennifer. We shared artichoke dip; hubby had the lump crab cake sandwich with a side of coleslaw which he demolished, and I had the Toosday salad--delicious and a huge portion, with fresh pieces of apple, pecan, feta cheese and well prepared grill chicken. We were just touring this place and was amazed by the old train dinning experience. The area is pretty popular but parking is decent. You go inside and it's wide , you don't even feel like you are inside a train. Nice ambience. Staff is very welcoming and our waitress was very sweet. Christmas decors made it more endearing. We were seated and immediately our waitress got our order and soon after that our delicious smelling food came. I ordered crab dip and salmon and both are perfectly done. I love the dip with crackers and my salmon with broccoli was perfect. All of us was pretty pleased with our food. We truly enjoyed this experience. From the staff to place and food, we love it. You walk into a place like this and just want to wander like it's a museum. There are so many wonders to take in! Even with a multitude of seating options, this place is so popular, you may want to consider reserving in advance. Our bartender was on it like a bonnet. Very attentive and kind. BLUF: Dry food, quiet restaurant, church vibes. Food (2/5): The food was very basic and not really flavorful. The chicken tender wrap was very dry. I had to dunk it in honey mustard to get it down my throat without sticking. It could have used ranch or Cesear dressing or something. If it had it already in the wrap, I didn't taste it or they forgot it. The spinach and artichoke was good! I'd get that again. It was creamy and there were plenty of chips. The DPO Chicken Sandwich was good. It too needed some flavor added. Service (5/5): Our waiter was extremely nice. He DID forget about us a few times and forgot the condiment requests and took a few mins to flag him down for dessert and the check. BUT he did steer us away from the chocolate mousse cake that they had as a special. He said it's been sitting all day and no one was ordering it or if they did, it wasn't good. So we ended up getting the peanut butter oreo cheesecake that they had. It was delicious. Ambiance (4/5): It's an old train station. This Staunton Landmark has the most beautiful wood bar that was purchased from a luxury hotel in Albany, NY and brought in by train. Sit down, relax, and have a drink while your bartender tells you the story of the bar. The Depot Grill is known for their Crab Bisque and it did not disappoint! It was so yummy! Also, they have hand battered mushrooms as an appetizer. A great app to share at your table. I loved the horsy sauce that it came with. The burger was dry and flavorless. Our food (ribeyes) were terrible and certainly not with the money they were charging. Ridiculous they serve crackers you can get in a packet with the crab appetizer. Poor selection of beer, especially on two. Spending over a $100 and you have blue moon on tap? Our waitress was excellent though the steaks came out before we had a chance to eat our salad. Baked potato was not done and was cold. Would have appreciated being sat in another section that didn't include a table if giggly, loud girls in a room with a terrible echo. BEFORE: Kinda hard to find if you've never been there but I found it and beer-tender Nicky got me a cold beer and iced tea within a minute of sitting down. Neat choo-choo ambiance as it was obviously an old train depot at one time. Nice solid bar. Comfortable stools. Ordered the Bacon cheddar burger, crispy fries and a bowl of "house-made crab bisque. AFTER: Well the crab bisque was definitely "house-made" and not out of a can. Decent amount of crab but could have been a bit chunkier for my preference. The flavor was spot on! Really delicious and great 'bisquee' not soupy consistency. The burger was ok. Nothing special or distinct about it. Bacon and cheddar had more flavor than the burger. We were in town so we decided to try out The Depot Grille which was recommended by our hotel. I ordered the fettuccine middlebrook and my boyfriend ordered the prime rib. The service was excellent!! However, the food lacked seasoning. Additionally, the Alfredo had a weird sweet taste and tasted like it was straight out of the jar. I also had a pound of Parmesan cheese on my Caesar salad which, I suppose some people can appreciate. However, there was SO much left over, I felt bad wasting it. Anywho, 10/10 for customer service. 5/10 for service. The ambiance was cool. However, definitely has a small town feel. 7/10 for vibes. read more

I had been here once before and found the food was average and plain, nothing special. I tried it again a few years later and this time I was very impressed. The interior didn't look the same, so I guess they renovated the space. It was much nicer, warm and inviting. The menu was diverse this time too. The food was excellent, creative and tasty. A very nice lunch spot in Staunton, Virginia, that has two historic train carriages outside and is located itself in a former train depot (with historical features preserved). It's like stepping back in time. Friendly waiters who were efficient and professional. Simple menu. Delicious onion soup and chicken salad. The steak though is a bit simple, literally just a steak and some fries. One has to order extra sides. We tried the mushroom but the mushroom seemed to be from a can. Nothing wrong, just felt cheap. So much food that we took home major amounts of leftovers! The remnants of the very tasty Steak Medallions became steak and eggs the next day. The fried mushrooms were AWESOME and they reheated nicely in our air fryer. Hubby did polish off the fried oysters at the restaurant (yum!) and we packed up his baked potato to enjoy later. Amazing experience and excellent staff! We almost missed this spot while driving around the historic area. They have plenty of parking and antique train sections to see while you're heading inside. We walk in and spend most of our time waiting for a table checking out all the amazing art posted on the walls. My kids loved it! The waitress was super sweet and accommodating. Nestled down a cobblestone parking lot is this great restaurant. Walking in I was immediately greeted by a nice, young man. I was seated immediately and my serve came over right away. The Depot Grille is one of those Staple places of the City if Staunton. You cannot go wrong with anything you select on their menu it is all great!! I hosted our Junior Crew (Waynesboro First Aid Crew) banquet here in their "sun room with the hanging blown glass, it was great. They and I created a 3 entree choice menu - to make it easier on the chef and waitress. I had such excellent experience teaming with them!! Oh I absolutely loved Depot Grille. My mom has been trying to bring me here for dinner for a few years now when I visit and I had it in my head that this wasn't my kind of place (like fried foods and such). We finally came last night for dinner just the two of us and we had a great experience. I loved the ambiance walking up the side steps from the large public parking lot and coming into the old cobblestone depot area with old train cars. It's located in an old train depot and retains much of the charm. The inside has ancient wooden floorboard, soaring ceilings with wooden beams and a beautiful old bar area with ornate carved wood and mirrors. We had to wait around 20 minutes for a table as it was a Friday night but it moved quickly and we were sat in the side glassed in porch area overlooking the train cars - it was much quieter than the large back room near the bathrooms so I was happy with our seats by the windows at dusk. Our server was amazing - very friendly, super efficient with the drink refills without us asking - and easily answered all my menu questions and provided some inputs and suggestions. We decided to start with a cesar salad for my mom and the Depot Fries which are some yummy fries topped with queso, bacon and bleu cheese with ranch on the side for dipping. I LOVED them. It's not often fries have bleu cheese on them so this added a different flavor element that paired well. Sweet tea is house brewed and was excellent, not too sweet, just slightly sweet enough to be a treat. I like how this is a chill place where they put brown paper on the tables and encourage you to draw with crayons (think Macaroni Grille). I usually eat salads for dinner but I really wanted to try the "famous" hand-battered chicken tenders so I went with the chicken tender salad and asked for a few extra veggies on it and dressings on the side. My mom went with the steamed shrimp as her meal and loved them. My salad was huge and the portion of chicken tenders was like 2.5 chicken breasts, they're huge and delicious and moist. I only ended up eating 1/3 and took the rest home to enjoy later (which I did the next night for a snack and they were just as good). They have daily specials and had a fish special and several desserts - we went with the pumpkin pie latte ice cream scoops and a raspberry donut cheesecake. Both were amazing. I saw like 3-4 other desserts I wanted to try including cookies, cakes, brownies, noms. So far, my fav spot in Staunton I've tried on all my visits. Disgusting!!!! It should have stayed closed. Smothered chicken was inedible. The mozzarella cheese was not melted. I sent it back and it came out the same, like a piece of white rubber on top of bacon so hard you couldn't cut or chew it. The chicken was dry, tasteless, overcooked and so hard you couldn't cut it, even with a steak knife! The green beans were NOT country, they were French cut, luke warm and tasted nasty, nothing like country style beans. I had them take my meal off the check and ate a bowl of cheerios for dinner when I got home. The prices are high and the food is awful, none of my party of 4 enjoyed anything they ordered. The poor waitress was overwhelmed with a party of 8 but did the best she could. Can't see it staying in business too much longer. read more

This was our first time to visit this awesome place to eat. We arrived as it opened and the place is amazing from the decor and atmosphere when we arrived. We sat down and meet our awesome server Anna M. She was amazing from our bubbly personality to our assistance on things to do in area. We order our food and my wife ordered chicken strips meal when it arrived was more than she could eat so that was amazing. Tucked away in its historic (I mean historic) downtown area at end of a long cobblestone driveway its a cute elegant upper scale eatery. Great ambience .. it felt good. Good selection of beers and wine. Started with the happy hour deep fried shrooms which were quite tasty. The smothered ribeye sandwich was good. They had tiramisu on the menu... so I had to try it ... not bad (I'm a tiramisu snob). Wasn't there long but it's one of those places you'd keep coming back. read more

The location is in the historic district next to the Amtrak station. The Depot has a beautiful bar. There is adequate seating and good views of the town. Parking works. They don't take reservations as it is fairly casual. The waitress that we had was attentive and helpful. The food was average. We first ordered the chips and queso. The cheese milk was like a thin soup. We sent this back. The potato skins need to be crisper. The steak medallions served medium were perfect as were the button mushrooms. The plate needed cleaning. The Depot was unbelievably busy tonight with Mother's Day and graduation celebrations but our waitress, Lindsey, made it a great experience. Our drink orders got switched at the bar, they were out of baked potatoes, a side was missing--very unusual for The Depot. We're spending a long weekend here, so we decided to try this restaurant out. It's in a refurbished depot section with trains outside. Food (3/5): The food here was fine, though, nothing too special. We did start with the appetizer French fries with blue cheese, cheese sauce and bacon. The fries were crispy and the combination of the bacon and blue cheese was really good. For entrees, hubby got the fried shrimp dinner with a salad and one side. It seemed a bit expensive ($20), though the shrimp portion was pretty generous. The salad to start was very good, a combo of mixed greens, onions, cukes, tomatoes. The side of Cole slow was pretty meh, it was a bit dry. The shrimp themselves were fine, though the breading was really thick. We ended up cutting about half off and that was fine. The famous chicken fingers were tasty (3 beer battered tender chicken breast) and one side was only $12 (lunch portion of 3 tenders; dinner portion included a salad and was $16). The side of steamed broccoli was a highlight, very buttery and perfectly cooked. We got the peanut butter pie to go. It is a square slab so don't be put off by the ragged appearance, as it's one of the best desserts I have had in Staunton! The crust was buttery with an Oreo crust and the peanut butter mousse on top was creamy and delicious. It was an awesome steal for $5.50! I can see myself getting this again when I am in town. Atmosphere/COVID-19 cleanliness (4/5): The waitstaff were all wearing masks and the tables were pretty well spaced apart. The restaurant itself seemed unusually busy for early on a Sat night and there were lots of tables crammed full of people. It was a bit disconcerting to be in quite a packed place. The huge decorated bar with a 40 ft marble rail was imported from a hotel in Albany and definitely adds to the atmosphere. Service (5/5): Our server, Joseph, was great! Beautiful decor inside an old train station. Upscale but not snobby. The wait staff was friendly and attentive. Took a friend for her birthday lunch, and the waiter treated her to a brownie with ice cream. The chicken tender salad was fresh and crisp, the tenders were so big she didn't finish them.
