The epitome of Viet-Cajun could not be more evident than a place like Crawfish Cafe. I've eaten at a lot of places over the last couple of years that serve crawdaddies with a little Viet flair, but few have me reminiscing about the food as much as Crawfish Cafe does. I am constantly thinking about how delicious my experiences here have been and fully admit that I'm a fanboy over their food. Their location within the wing of Hong Kong Supermarket isn't obvious to folks cruising along Bellaire Blvd. Head to the parking lot and follow the signs into what feels like a dead part of the mall. There is a whole setup of tables and plenty of seats. They have their busy evenings, but I've been lucky to avoid most crowds. The crawfish served here reminds me a lot of the ones I've eaten in Louisiana: large, plump and full of flavor. I am particularly fond of their house special blends, which include the mix (garlic butter & lemon pepper), the grail (garlic butter + Thai basil), and the signature (garlic butter + kickin Cajun). The latter is the winner by a slim margin and the grail is also a wonderful addition as well. I love throwing in potatoes, sausage, and eggs as well. I have also have enjoyed their crawfish cheesebreads, crawfish egg rolls, crawfish empanadas, and boudin balls. Their garlic noodles are classic, as is the crawfish fried rice. I think the oyster nachos were the the least impressive, but it was still pretty fun visually. They also offer fried shrimp, chicken wings, and even catfish and other premium seafood such as lobster tail, and whole flounders. The service has always been on point. I appreciate their handwashing station and friendly wait staff. Prices are never going to be their strong suit, but I always know anything seafood related is going to cost a tinge more than most things. Highlight: 2lbs of Live Crawfish ($11.99/lb) Got the house signature sauce blend in mild. I have low spice tolerance so I could feel a bit of a kick. The sauce was on the salty end and because of that, I couldn't tell if the head was sweet or not. The crawfish were a blend of various sizes and some of them were big enough to where there's meat in the claws. Some of the insides were a tiny bit darker than I would have liked. Hospitality: Our server was attentive and friendly and felt like the food came out 3 minutes after ordering. This is my Sweet but Bittersweet review of Crawfish Cafe Sooo. I was craving Crawfish as usual on last Saturday. I was doing my research as usual. Checking my Crawfish Facebook groups, Crawfish Restaurant pages etc... Due to the Snow and cold weather last week an abundant of places were out of Crawfish. That is totally understandable for a normal human being, as I am not that. Lol! I was in Richmond and wanted to go pick some up before heading home. It was raining on and off (inconsistent and bipolar) I live on the Southwest- China Town-Representing!!! I'm pretty much in Viet Crawfish Paradise! I called 3 businesses and 1 food truck with no luck. 1 business told me that they would be getting more later that night. I didn't want to go back outside after settling in. I decided to call Crawfish Cafe that has never let me down. There was a lady that answered the phone and I swear it sounded like she was in a call center or not at the location. She asked did I want my Crawfish with heads or without, which threw me off alot. I reiterated that I wanted boiled Crawfish. I totally confirmed with her that I was getting 3lbs of boiled Crawfish Medium Cajun. She told me 20 mins or so for pick up. It started pouring down raining. That would usually deter me from going anywhere. On Bellaire they drive pretty crazy. I got right in that Crazy to go get my babies. I pulled in the back, where they have the to go pick up, which is very convenient. I didn't know about the back pick up or entrance till a few years ago. I parked right in the front in the handicapped lane(Forgive me please) due to no other spots being available and the pouring down rain. I was coming right back out. I went in and went to the counter to let them know that I had a pick up order and there was a girl that said my name and told me that they were bagging up my Crawfish. Maybe she was the one on the phone. N E Ways, I liked how she acknowledge me and repeated my order to me. The crawfish here is good, however I would visit a different location. It is located inside of a mall in Chinatown. It was a bit hard to find, they have an excessive amount of flies. There is not a physical closed off restaurant, moreso it is the middle of the floor of the mall so it is very open. Over the years, Crawfish Cafe has consistently been mine and my family's favorite place for crawfish. We always order takeout out and prefer to eat it at home because of how messy it gets but I decided to dine in this time. Conveniently, there's a handwashing station near the bathrooms to help with the messiness! It was pretty busy for a random Tuesday evening. We ordered 2 lbs of crawfish with 2 orders of potatoes, Cajun fried rice, and fries. Market price was $9.99 which wasn't bad. I ordered medium spice level (what i always order) for the crawfish but felt that it wasn't spicy at all. When I eat crawfish, I like it to be a tolerable spice but this one was veryyy mild. Lol my nose wasn't runny like it usually is when I eat crawfish! I might have to get spicy or the extra spicy next time.
