We all know the pains of trying to do a home improvement project. There are just so many unknowns! You have the budgeting, the unknowns about if the contractor you choose will end up going over the initial estimate. You have the unknowns of what you'll end up spending above the estimate (appliances, unknown work). You also have the unknowns of the contractors themselves - are they reliable and honest? Our family wanted to essentially knock down a wall to merge our kitchen and living room area into a larger kitchen with storage and more flow through. We are a large family with a small kitchen and we were frequently going into the garage, which we used as our pantry and it was getting tiresome, esp if the garage was a mess. We were willing to sacrifice our dining room area in order to get this done. We had been interviewing different contractors over the past 2-3 years for this project, but none of them felt quite right. Generally I felt like there are 2 categories of contractors. 1) Smaller local contractors that seem nice and come in at lower bids but you wonder about their ability to understand the complete the job. 2) Larger contractor companies that you're not sure if they care that much about your house and will estimate higher. They can probably get it done, but at what cost? Also, more often than not I felt pressured and rushed and it seemed like I was dealing with guys that just wanted to get it done, and get out and onto the next project. Add to all of this is that my wife and I were well aware that designing a kitchen was out of our league and that it wasn't just looks, but the overall functionality that was important. We were willing to hand the reigns to someone if we found the right person. With all this as the background, I started looking again for a contractor early 2021, knowing full well that many contractors were tied up during the COVID period with lots of work, and with little hope. I scrolled through Yelp (yet) again and Create interior showed up. I immediately fell in love w/ the design and the color choices in the pictures. I called and Shawn answered. I explained what we were looking for, very dubious about if this would even pan out. I explained the details of what I was looking for, and that I was looking for this to be done during summer vacation, right after the kids were all done w/ schooling at home via Zoom. We had an initial meeting to go over what I was looking for, and I could tell Shawn was already formulating a vision. He gave an idea of what he thought would work, and provided a rough estimate. I told him about my timeline again and he thought he could make it work. Shawn is actually a designer, which is exactly what I was looking for. I asked him for an initial design and he mocked it all up and rendered it realistically. I was honestly doubtful at this point b/c I've seen designers before but it was about their ability to carry it out, right? He said he had his own team that he worked with for awhile, not subcontracting so I felt good about that. After going through the design and paying for that separately, we decided we would hire him. Shawn drafted up a payment schedule and a contract. To make a super long story just long, Shawn and his crew were able to finish on schedule. Shawn basically suggested all the items we should buy but gave us wiggle room to choose our own where desired (for ex, we swapped out the sink and bought all our own appliances, but we went w/ his recommended handles and lighting). He was also flexible along the way about tweaking the design about where the dishwasher should go and where we could have double drawers, pots/pans storage and the depth of the cabinets. We went w/ pre-made cabinets but they turned out fine and saved us money btw. There were times along the way where we felt like those HGTV shows. Will this wall be load bearing?! (It was not) and unexpected surprises, such as the cabinet depth affecting the recessed lighting locations. But they were all resolved, and Shawn was honest about the costs of any changes I made, and billed me separately. The cost went a bit over the estimate b/c of the plumbing we had to redirect (which was in the wall) but overall the labor and rough estimates fell in the middle of other estimates we got in the past. At the end of the day, the work was done on time and we absolutely got along w/ all the workers who all spoke English very well and were friendly. Shawn checked in periodically to ensure all the work was done and he's an artist. He wants to know what he designed is what will be built and he's equally invested in the work being beautiful and functional. BTW there were three separate teams. 1) main team that did demolition, flooring, tiles and lighting. 2) cabinet team. 3) quartz slab team. They were all great! And all the work was done on time, on budget and we are happy. Don't we all wish for that from any contractor work we do? So go with Shawn at Create Interior! read more

Marin was so responsive and flexible when I had to reschedule the day of our appointment. When Shawn came to my house to view my project, he was so professional and had amazing ideas. We were doing a major kitchen remodel and found "kitchen designers" to be a very generic term that means different things to different people depending on the day. As we had a fairly awkward space to work in, we picked Shawn because he has the precise matching skill set to what we were looking for - somebody who understood both interior design as well as construction - who could optimize our existing space and help us visualize what was possible that was reasonably "buildable". He proved to be the right choice for us - the rendered final photos he provided were exactly what we needed in order to help us visualize the final result, and communicate clearly with the various parties that would become involved. Along the way, Shawn patiently worked with us through several revisions of the plan, pointed us towards other professionals - architects, engineers, cabinet providers, as well providing a complete list of items that we would need to make the vision a reality. We moved into our home last year and it desperately needed a kitchen and master bath remodel (1980's home). I found Shawn on Houzz and loved his clean, modern designs and then saw that he had good reviews here on Yelp as well. He was able to come out quickly for an initial consultation and was very straightforward on explaining his process, timing and fees. After talking to a few other designers/contractors, we decided to go with Shawn based on his transparency and his overall design vision for our remodel based on seeing our house and our current style. There was a several months delay in getting our project started, but I appreciate the way he manages his projects. Rather than starting sooner and doing a little bit at a time, he waits until everything and all of his team are ready to go so that the overall project timeline happens quickly and you're not living in a construction zone for longer than necessary. Overall, our project took about 14 weeks, which was almost spot on with what he estimated at the start of our project. We did have a few minor items that were outstanding for a few months after the project officially ended (everything was functional to use after 14 weeks), but I think that was more due to delays because of Covid than anything within Shawn's control. We love both our kitchen and master bathroom! The designs that Shawn came up with are beautiful and perfectly match our overall style. It's especially the little details that make a difference, such as the specific wall tiles and back splash that he picked out that I never would have thought of if I'd selected them myself. He has a good design eye and can come up with suggestions when you don't know what you want or solutions if you run into an issue. He is also a great general contractor with managing his whole team and dealing with city permits and inspectors - dealing with all that coordination alone is well worth it. We also have to give a shout-out to everyone on his team - everyone he works with were super reliable and did a great job. We needed help with our kitchens and 2 bathrooms and we found Shawn's company after an exhaustive search on the internet of interior design firms and being overall unimpressed of the options that were out there. I can not start to explain how in LOVE I am with my beautiful new restroom (more like personal spa) has come out. We had Shawn to design our kitchen, living room, guest bath, and master bath. (a) His designs really do look amazing as if they are out of a magazine. In my opinion, a mark of a good designer is one in which their design looks identical to the finished product. So far we've completed construction on both of the bathrooms and they look pretty darn close if not just the same as the design. (b) Usually contractors are notorious for being difficult to get a hold of or take a long time to reply when you have a question. Shawn did his best to answer our questions or concerns within 24 hours. We also never felt pressured by Shawn to do anything we didn't feel comfortable doing. (c) Not only do his designs look high end, but the materials he procured could easily be found online and were actually surprisingly reasonable in cost. No point in having a great design if the materials end up being unaffordable for the client. We still have to finish the kitchen and living room, but so far he's been a pleasure to work with! read more

I heard of Shawn through NextDoor Neighbor. After researching a few reviews and looking at photos of the jobs he has in his portfolio, his aesthetic was what I was looking for. We have 2 bathrooms to completely gut, and we are taking out a couple of existing closets in our hall way to make the master bath bigger. My husband and I tried on our own to figure out a new plan for both bathrooms but it was so hard to visualize with the closets not being demo'd yet. Shawn came in and saw a vision that I don't think we could have done ourselves - his work and ideas were so valuable and worth every penny! The shower of praise did not surprise me; Although the projects in our house were small, Shawn and the staff who accompanied him conducted themselves professionally and it was as if this was the project of the century! Each topic I raised was answered with a diagnosis, definition, detailed explanations and ideas for a solution and then within a very short time, all the work was carried out while finding solutions for everything that was discovered during the work. I would like to emphasize a significant detail: The projects that were carried out in our house were done while we were living in the house and during the current pandemic. This is a long overdue review about my meeting and experience with Shawn from Create Interior Design. I reached out pretty quickly after I made my inquiry online and we were able to have him to our home the following week. He listened to what our concerns were, what we wished for our bathroom remodel along with my kids bathroom remodel. We also talked about the budget and what would be realistic to do within the budget. We decided right on the spot that we would have Shawn design both bathrooms. He was clear that it would be a few weeks before he would begin the design process and we were ok with that. It was such a pleasure to work with Shawn. We are fairly new to the area and weren't sure where to get the guidance we needed for our kitchen remodel. We reached out to Shawn and he took it from there! Shawn was always very professional, a creative and a very talented designer.
