This establishment, in the Midland suburb of Bullock Creek, is easy to overlook -- looks like a typical small- town bar on the main drag. But it has an extensive and ambitious menu -- on the day we visited the day' s specials included several dishes featuring home- smoked brisket, a Cajun spiced shrimp and crayfish scampi and pistachio- encrusted red snapper. There are also at least a half dozen specialty burgers, an assortment of steaks, other entrees and a special seasonal menu as well. Diverse patronage -- everyone from executives in ties to well drillers to retirees -- which tells me the food is going to be better than average. First the good news: Our lunches ( brisket quesadillas and the Cajun scampi) were delicious. The scampi was flavorful, chock-full of seafood and pleasantly nippy without overpowering heat-- my only complaint was that the pasta portion could have been reduced by at least half; way out of proportion. My partner' s brisket quesadillas were also outstanding -- butter-tender, nicely smoked brisket, a pop of bleu cheese. Now the bad news: Our service was terrible. I think we managed to coax maybe a half- dozen sentences out of our sullen waitperson, who sometimes said nothing at all to us as she came around. We also had to put up with the cook periodically coming out of the kitchen to silently stare at us for minutes at a time. We are two rotund, graying grandmothers; nothing to see here, dude; go away. It felt like we' d been walked into one of those TV crime dramas where unsuspecting tourists wander into a seemingly benign small town, but soon regret it. Bottom line: If you aspire to an outstanding menu that draws people into your establishment from around the area, your staff needs to be up to the task. Hit and miss cooks, and friendly, mostly competant staff. The buffalo mac n cheese is good. Burgers usually show up under-cooked. Avoid the beer cheese soup (I swear the cooks don't even taste their food) and the cuban regularly comes dripping with mustard... which is not authentic of an actual cuban, not to mention their mustard tastes like GFS dijon... I like mustard but this stuff reminds me of dog vomit (see pic of my second "cuban sandwich"). Best I've had there is the creek tuna sandwich. They're geting their third and final chance to make the cuban right the next time we go... otherwise we're done. Tried The Creek for the first time, and got more than I expected. A BUG in my Lobster Mac and Cheese. Proceeded to check the other plate of Mac and Cheese at the table and located another bug baked right in. The "manager" said "The chef must have miss that" "That's weird it's too cold, bugs aren't even out" "We normally don't have bugs in the cooler" I was still hungry and proceeded to give them another chance by ordering a burger, their ground beef wasn't ground fine enough and had chucks of bone still in it. I came here twice . I was not impressed . there is nothing special here. it is a little over priced for the quality. I wold go here If I was starving and needed to eat and this was the closest joint. but that would be the only reason I would go anymore. The last time I ate here I ordered a steak and ordered it medium. It came out medium well. This review is based solely on happy hour beer specials. Jake and I stopped in after accidentally stumbling upon this place while on a detour through Midland-and we are sure happy that we did. Happy Hour runs 3-6, as we were told by our awesome bartender, Amy. Who also chatted with us about the surrounding area, live music that they feature and a summer volleyball league. She was friendly, outgoing and everything you could ask for in a bartender. While their draught selection is limited, they do a good job of pleasing everyone. My only wish was that they had a dark or stout to offer.....even Guinness. They did have the typical Miller/Bud Light on tap for an astonishingly cheap 1.75! They did also offer Busch Light for $1.00 too. Their "specialty" beers were, I believe $2.25, which is a steal. The beer was poured in true pint glasses and very cold. We also had great chips and salsa to munch on. We stopped in for one and stayed for four and a shot (and three hours). We will return frequently! read more

Just visted the Creek for my 1st time. I had the Brisket Mac n Cheese which was one of the specials for the night. In my mind I figured it was a authentic bbq style brisket. The cheese sauce was decent but lacked in the amount of creaminess. It wasnt't dry but I had to mix a lot of it up to get the cheesy texture you would expect. They sprinkled, bagged, shredded cheese on top for the final cook process. It would be way better with a panko/crumb type crust instead. The biggest let down was the brisket. It was a bland, generic, cooked in a oven with no seasoning type taste. It was actually the worst part of the meal and it was the biggest reason I ordered it. The others I came with had fish which was reall good. It tasted really fresh, well battered and good quality. I will definitely give them a 2nd chance when I'm around the area and see what else they offer. The over all ambiance is a local type resturant/ bar feel to it with the sevice being about average. Updated: Cuban sandwich is amazing. Service is decent. It gets pretty loud when it starts filling up and if a band is playing you almost can't talk without yelling. Called on new year's eve with low expectations and not expecting to get a reservation. Speak to hostess. She says if we come now, 5:45, we don't need one as there are open tables. We go there, arriving exactly 15 minutes later and after discussions amongst several employees, they tell us there are no tables. I ask who I spoke to but no one fesses up. The Asian hostess then lies/ tells the owner, in front of us , that we had called 30 minutes ago. So I guess she was the one who told me I didn't need a reservation and to come on over. Owner apologizes and say he needs 20 of 24 tables at 7 but that we could eat at the bar. There are a few stools at the end where the waitress's pick up their orders and the TV is staring at us. We pass on that. This BTW, is a full hour before 7 and there are numerous unfilled tables currently available. So is it the end of the world, no. Did we just rush over to this restaurant after leaving our children with a baby sitter, yes. Could we simply have had a realistic conversation with a competent employee who would tell us to schedule for later or not come (like the other 2 restaurants I called did) yes. So while I can't talk to the food, I can talk to the fact that we got shafted and will not go back. That and evidently it takes over 1 hour to eat there. read more

Stopped by here after poking around looking for food around Midland. Grabbed a nice craft beer (a good start), and ordered my food. The blue cheese coleslaw was awesome. It was a vinegar styled slaw, and I couldn't help wondering if a sweet slaw with bleu cheese would be a better mix of sweet and sour, but even those thoughts don't take away from how awesome it was. The bison burger was just as good, and sweet potato fries with a sweet brown sugar dipping sauce? If a half star was an option, I would've rated it that way only because the Coca-Cola seemed fine. We arrived before the lunch rush and ended up leaving 1 hour later without ever seeing our food. Granted, we had a complicated order consisting of macaroni and cheese, a chef salad, and a hamburger with cheese, lettuce and catsup. I tried this place 2 other times and should've known not to return. First visit I ordered a tuna salad and the waitress ran across the street to the gas station for a nice can of their finest tuna. Second time I ordered a seafood salad which, once again, required canned seafood. A pile of tiny canned shrimp dressed up this masterpiece. I went to this restaurant last night. I ordered 'seafood' scampi. This dish was described to have shrimp & scallops with pasta and alfredo sauce. The price was $18. The waitress suggested Cajun vs. regular alfredo. I prefer spicy foods and agreed to try with Cajun seasoning. We had ordered the highly recommended appetizer of spinach/artichoke dip with pita chips (this was very good and filling). When my meal came, I took a tiny taste. It was extremely hot (and I like hot). I told the waitress it was too hot, she suggested to get straight white sauce to add to it to tone it down. She brought me a 1/2 cup of plain alfredo sauce, I added it, but it was still too hot. I asked for a box to take it home because I was too full from the appetizers. I tried to reheat it at home and found only 4 shrimp, no scallops, or any other seafood. Whoever seasoned this dish went way overboard. It was too hot for any 'hot loving human' to ingest. I tried to tone it down with butter, cream, and cheese. It's still way too hot to ingest (REPEAT: I like 'hot' food and always order it hot) I'm upset because there were only 4 shrimp for $18 and spiced to the point of not being able to eat it. I have NEVER ever written a review before this one. I feel I needed to write this.....when reviewing my bill, I see the waitress charged me for the alfredo sauce that she brought me to try to fix the dish (really???). read more

Our friend likes to try new places, so we go to a lot of the non-chain places around town. The wait staff was very friendly, but overrun. It appeared busy given the full parking lot, which is usually a good sign. However, the tables were filled because it took a very long time to get food and drinks. We came in a 5pm (I get that's peak time) and left at 7pm. We were a table for 4, including one 6 y/o child. The child immediately commented that there was nothing for him to do, as he's used to getting some kind of kids menu to ease the wait. No problem, we kept him occupied, but they could improve here by making that slight upgrade to ease the wait for kids and their parents. My husband's Guinness can had some kind of greasy black junk on it around the lip and rim, which we ended up cleaning off ourselves, because we couldn't flag down a server. Our drinks came 30+ mins into our visit. The three of us were done our beers before our food finally came. At one point we flagged down someone to refill the child's chocolate milk, because no one was checking on us. The food was decent -not great-, but given the wait time and the slightly elevated prices, it's safe to say we won't be returning. There are many other options in the same price range. I hoped the noise level complaints from some other yelp users were an exaggeration; sadly they were not. There are TV's with sports showing, but you can not hear them, assuming the sound is even on. This has been my favorite restaurants in Midland since they opened. And I must not be only that thinks that because it is always busy. I've been through the whole menu pretty much and have found many, many meals I would have over and over. BBQ, yes! Burgers, yes! Fish tacos, yes! Gumbo, yes! And so it goes. However, since I've had it all, I look forward to the seasonal specials. I do have favorite staff (Maddie), and like to go on nights they have for live music. This establishment is absolutely amazing. The menu is unique. The specials are often very interesting, locally sourced, and unique. The food is cooked perfectly. Every single time I eat here, I am blown away by the food. The food is on par with an establishment of much higher caliber. Yet, you are paying prices that are much lower than those places. We had my mom's birthday lunch here yesterday, and I was sorely disappointed. The server was good and provided decent service for our group of 16. However, the food was lackluster and the rest of the staff less than pleasant. When I called to make the reservation it sounded as if I was inconveniencing them by doing so. I asked to have an appetizer platter made and ready ahead of time so as people arrived it would be there. I was told the chef would call or email me to set this up, but I never heard from anyone. We were able to order appetizers when we arrived, and it worked out okay. The apps were tasty, but that might be the best part of the meal. A few people ordered the clam chowder. They said it tasted ok but was very thin as if they added milk to make it go farther. When my niece (12 yrs old) tasted it she asked to change her order since that is what she ordered for her lunch. She ordered the plain Mac and cheese instead. She ended up receiving the kids order which was just Kraft and not the homemade version she had hoped for. As this was a miscommunication it was paid for because trying to find someone to fix it was impossible. My sister in law ordered a grilled cheese. Obviously, the cooks made this first and it sat waiting for all of the rest of the food to be ready. It was cold and the cheese wasn't melted. She took a bite or two then sent it back. After at least 5 minutes she received the exact grilled cheese back with bites taken out! So instead of quickly grilling a new sandwich they put the partially eaten one back on the grill! Of all the times to just make a new sandwich I would think a grilled cheese would be it. I have 8 years of restaurant experience and I was disgusted and baffled that the cooks and server would do that! I might be more understanding to the lack of food quality if it was busy, but there were only 2-3 other small tables in there the whole 2 hours we were there.
