Being on a recent sweet tooth kick, I've been perusing bakeries and cafes on Yelp and decided on making a special trip to Crispian bakery on a rainy Sunday morning. I was on a mission to satisfy of craving for cream puffs. It was a sleepy morning at 9:30 with the parking lot near empty. I cruised through the little alleyway and hung a left, and there it was in all its glory. Actually, it was a quaint little shop. I stepped through the doors, with my order ready on my lips, "I'll have one cream puff and a mocha please." The girl behind the counter carefully placed my confection into a little box, while the barista prepared my hot coffee drink. After 5+ minutes, I was in my merry way, en route to do some grocery shopping. The drink was decent if you don't like sugary drinks. I prefer mine a bit sweeter. It is mocha, after all. With surprising discipline, I waited until I returned home to enjoy my cream puff. I readied myself as it's significantly bigger and more intricate than the likes from Beard Poppa. Carefully, I took a bite without toppling the little pastry shell lid. Wow, I never expected the complexity of the layers! Encased in the slightly sweet shell were vanilla filling, sliced strawberries, and whipped cream. You can tell this was made with love....a well-conceived and well-executed concoction. Came here early friday morning shortly after opening. There wasn't any line & they were being really safe in terms of COVID-19 protocols. You aren't able to go inside but you can easily see what they're offering while in line. Parking: there are several street parking along the street, otherwise, they have a parking lot in the back with decent amount of spaces. Pastries Recommendations: -almond croissant: highly recommend this. They certainly don't skimp on the almond filling like most places so was really pleased with that. Additionally, the outer layer was the right amount of crisp & flakiness. I appreciated that it wasn't overly sweet either just the right amount of sweetness you'd want in the morning -Gingersnap cookies: personally, loved this. My partner wasn't the biggest fan since they preferred it chewier but the inside was definitely still chewy. If you prefer chewy I recommend throwing it in the microwave for 15-20seconds. -Chocolate Chip: if you're a fan of the classics get this -Mexican Hot chocolate: if you're a fan of chocolate or brownies, definitely get this! These guys are on point for COVID prep, kudos for that. Service is friendly and prompt. And their pastries are all VERY high quality. So, why 4 stars? Simple: there is no chocolate in the chocolate croissant. Okay, there's a wisp, a hint... I wanted to chalk this up to just bad luck the first, er, eight times. But, sadly, it appears to be by design - either the head chef is diabetic, or the accounting department is in charge of cocoa disbursement. Worse? What little chocolate there is, stays in a solid stringy lump at the very bottom of the pastry. It's the equivalent of seeing an exquisite skillfully made bun, and six bites in still wondering why they call it a Wagyu Burger if there's no beef. My favorite of all time here is definitely the almond croissant especially when you heat it up. There is a sweet filling in the middle that tasted like coconut, but it made sense that it was almond. Beyond yummy grab-and-go baked goods, Crispian has made us two delicious custom birthday cakes for our kids with great decoration! Unlike many bakeries, they can take custom cake orders the week before, which saved me on one occasion. The baker/owner is very open to working with you on what you want. Our first cake had one layer of vanilla cake and one layer of chocolate cake with our choice of frostings inside and out. More recently (inspiring this review!), we had them substitute lemon curd instead of passion fruit in their chantilly cake and it was lovely -- our whole family raved about how light, moist, and flavorful it was, without being too sweet. Outside of special occasions, we love grabbing Crispian's sesame loaf when we're making soup for dinner. read more

Ordered the Yule Log / Bouche de Noel for pickup a few days before Christmas to surprise my wife after giving birth to our firstborn child the day before. I showed up to pick up the cake slightly after closing (after being discharged from the hospital later than expected) but they were still there cleaning up the shop and were able to make the handoff. Dear Crispian, I give this feedback worthy the best intentions since I love taking my family here on the weekends. Your croissants and danishes have been very disappointing lately. They use to be airy and flaky and now they are dense bready bricks. My bestie bought me a birthday cake from here. I'm a lover of all cakes. When she surprised me with "the cake of the month" I was super stoked to cut it open! The layers were impressive and fantastic for such a small cake. It was a vanilla cake with a layer of raspberry jam, layer of raspberry mousse, and vanilla buttercream. I must say, the cake itself is beautiful. The buttercream has this spectacular sheen on it that looks almost like a pearl gloss. The birthday writing was in a decadent dark chocolate that was delish. This raspberry cake was very pretty and for the most part, very tasty. My only criticism would be the cake was a bit dense and dry, and could have been more moist. The raspberry mousse was decadent and the buttercream was on the rich side, but still, so good! This cake was special and something I'll always remember. I believe a 6 inch small cake is under $30 which is a good price for something of this quality. Checked out this place online and their cookies and pastries looked really sexy. I'm not from around the area but I just started working nearby. I wasn't sure where to a buy a cake from and I found this bakery on yelp. I was really hoping this place was going to be good. I called and ordered a cake last minute yesterday around 1pm for my coworker's birthday today. I chose a red velvet cake and had to pay for it over the phone. I picked it up this morning at 11am. It looked nice but once we cut it, it was all hard. The cake tasted old as if it was a display cake or was baked a couple days ago. It was pretty disappointing. I would have been better off just buying it from Safeway. They had enough time to bake a fresh cake this morning but I guess they didn't want to. read more

For 4.5 stars, it wasn't what I was expecting. I expected more, especially from their ham and swiss croissant. Its structured in a circular shape, but really, it held no appeal for me after the first bite. It has the hardness and the texture of the croissant on the outside, the district rampant and strong flavor of ham. I don't remember tasting much cheese. There was plentiful tiny nuts and seeds on it. Some of you all may love it, as the rest of the reviews did. I also ended up getting a pizza croissant because the server botched my order, and interestingly enough, I liked this more. It had the tomato sauce on the pizza, balanced with the thick crust of the croissant. I really liked the atmosphere of this bakery. Cozy, warm, gentle. It seems like a good and peaceful place to study, if I ever get the chance. Service was pretty nice. I hear their macarons are good, so I might try that sometime. read more

I transitioned into my current job last May and still miss my old colleagues. One such colleague stopped by Crispian Bakery on my last day of work and gifted me a chocolate cupcake with strawberry frosting. How do I remember this? While I have a pretty good memory, I credit this recall with the fact that the cupcake was so dang good that I created an entire Yelp bookmark list titled: "Marianna's Rec (chocolate cupcake w/ strawberry frosting - going away treat)." Yes, it was THAT good. I remember stopping by Crispian for the first time a couple months after that and being disappointed not to find the chocolate cupcake. What I did end up with, though, was a box full of their cream puffs (a visual delight in addition to being a tasty treat). Since then, this is the bakery I typically look to for special treats, cakes, etc. I have not, sadly, explored much of their savory offerings, nor have I had the opportunity to just sit and eat in. This place is a little gem! We always stop here on our annual trek to Napa and back to the airport (got to have a treat for the flight). I so love this newly found bakery. Everything I've bought has been absolutely delicious. My go to buys are their cookies-love their white chocolate macadamia and cookie as well as their oatmeal raisin cookie. For health reason and the challenge of being type 2 diabetic, I have never stopped in this bakery until the spare time that I had earlier this afternoon. I am always thinking of the large amount of carbs and sugars used in the breads, scones, muffins, cookies, cinnamon buns, pastries, etc. Then I ask myself, how much of an impact will all these baked goods have on my glucose readings? Do I have enough will power and self-discipline to eat them in moderation without having a sugar spike? There is also a concern of overindulgence in sweets, such as weight gain, daily glucose readings, A1C's from blood tests. On the other hand, I should not worry about these things but just enjoy my life of almost 65 years. It's quality vs. quantity of life. A little guilty pleasure of a sweet indulgence does not hurt, as long as it is done in moderation and occasionally. Ambiance: casual and comfy. Double glass door entrance. Display rack has bags of assorted cookies and bags of granola snacks. Opposite end has a few tables and chairs for dining in. Wall has several picture frames in various sizes. One display case has trays of macarons, sliced quiche, pie, cookies, etc. The other case has the artisan breads, rolls, scones. Cleanliness: Grade A. Customer service: Since it's my first time in Crispian, female employee was pleasant and gave me time to browse and decide what I wanted to purchase. Specialties: baked goods, expresso, cappuccinos, organic teas, granola snacks, cookies. Eats to go: slice of quiche and a bag of ginger cookies. Quiche was on point with a nice golden brown doneness. Texture of the quiche was moist and delish, crust was also perfect; not soggy. I haven't tried the ginger cookies yet, but they do look scrumptious in the clear cellophane bag. Return trips: yes, to dine in on a scone, a cup of organic tea and the ham 'n cheese croissant that other yelpers are raving about. read more

Ordered a birthday cake days before the delivery date. Everything was smooth, even called in the morning to double check everything since it's a surprise birthday cake. Asked for 9am delivery when I ordered it but hey time check.. 9:45 am After posting this on Yelp, I tried to call them for a follow up. Couple of phone ringing and then they answered the phone, right away I was asked if I could be place on hold for a sec and since I somehow understand that they maybe busy, I said 'it's fine" but hey guess what again? I've been on hold for more than 5 minutes! Took a screenshot while on hold with them. I guess I'll still be on hold forever. I hung up and after few minutes I called them for an attempt to ask them where is the cake I've ordered and paid? Well guess what again! Their phone line was busy. That's why I guess i would still be on hold if I didn't hang up the call. Still the same, busy phone line. Could someone tell me if they got b0*mb in Alameda today that's why THEY CAN'T HELP ME?? At 11.30am i used my husband's phone to call them and praise God it rang and they answered! The lady I spoke to wasn't apologetic when i was complaining that the order i made isn't here yet. She was just saying that they have the order but it doesn't have a time requested for delivery. I was like.. Omg! When i called to order it I asked the earliest time you could deliver and she said 9am that's why I said let's do 9am then. I told her I even called this morning to double check everything and she didn't mention that it doesn't have a requested time (in case it didn't have one) but i also mentioned that if it doesn't have a time, i left my phone number when i ordered the cake they could call meeeeee! Tried to relax since we can't do anything about it, she started apologizing when i sounded frustrated already so yep she said she's sorry and they will deliver the cake as in right now. After just few minutes, theh called. It was comforting as a customer that someone cares on their end. The owner called and explained what happened and apologized. She's calm and admitted some mistakes (in communication) while accepting the order. She offered me a refund but I said I'm hearing good things about the bakery so I'll give it a try. Beth delivered the cake and sincerely apologize about what happened. She even gave us cookies to try. One thing is for sure even without the cookies, when I first talked to her over the phone (when she called me to clarify what happened) i right away felt the sincerity and the care she has for customers and I just feel sorry for the owners, their employees should do their jobs well and be attentive when taking over the phone orders. I won't turn my back yet on Crispian Bakery, the misunderstanding was professionally handled by Beth, just hoping this won't happen again. Btw though the surprise bday cake didn't happened, husband loved his Chocolate cake. It was bursting with chocolate flavor yet you won't taste too sugar'y in it. Husband gave me a thumbs up. The worst thing that can happen to a person living in Alameda is coming here and realizing that their ham and cheese croissant is sold out. One has to wake up early in the morning to secure one of said croissants.... and waking up early is definitely worth it. Those croissants are so good I would compare them to Tartine quality - only less expensive. My last visit here I go early and order a ham and cheese croissant and enjoyed it in the bakery with coffee and order one more Almond croissant to go. The almond croissants are my favorite. The one I ordered to go didn't last longer than 30 minutes after I left. It was too tempting. They are substantial and a bit rustic and hit the spot any morning. I just had an almond croissant from Tartine SF and these are heavier and more buttery and flavorful. Tartine bakes the croissants almost until they are dark brown to enhance flavor - here they are baked less I think to appeal to people who are not into super dark pastry trend. Its so unexpected to have such desserts here in the east bay. Give it a try and go for a stroll down park street to the beach to burn off your calories. read more

Arsicault Bakery is still looking for bread oven. I could not wait any longer. I had a vision to execute. I wanted charcuterie for dinner. Had an half hour break between meetings and discovered this place. Bought baguette, they only had three left at 1 PM. Shuttled it to the city. Assembled what I thought to be a very average dinner: cheese, soft and hard; meats, spanish; wine, red; figs and blue berries; marcona almonds. Crispian baguette. Dessert: spicy chocolate cookies, also Crispian. Excellent dinner. Companion said. So good that I got a text message next day to thank me for the deliciousness. I think it's because it was a very warm evening in the city. And baked goods from Alameda seemed exotic. All the way from across the bay.
