What a gem of a find in Oakland! Though it's not in the nicest of neighborhoods. I was googling for a spot that sells good sandwich bread in Oakland and came across Bui Phong mentioned on a reddit thread, so I decided to check it out. You can only order takeout from here. Can't even walk into the bakery. You order from the window on 28th Ave and let the guy know what you want. The menu is straightforward, with bolillos (french rolls) being their most popular item at 75 cents each. They also sell baguettes for $2.50 each and a variety of croissants. Everyone ahead of us was ordering a ton of bolillos, so that seems to be the thing to get here. We ordered 5 of the bolillos, a plain croissant, and a baguette. So much yummy baked goodness for ~$8! The car drive home felt extra long because the bread smelled SO good and we couldn't wait to get home to give the bread a try. The quality of the bread is amazing. The bolillos were crunchy on the outside by super soft on the inside and were indeed the perfect sandwich bread (thanks Reddit!). We used the baguette to make breakfast sandwiches for the next couple days and really enjoyed that as well. The croissant was MASSIVE and full of buttery goodness. Love this hidden gem and it's worth every trek to visit if I crave fresh bread or croissants. Definitely hidden in a residential area and nothing else is nearby as it is a commercial kitchen. Parking is limited as they are generous to sell to the public. There are delivery vans loading up bagful of their bread. I'm amazed to see these unknown shops buy their bread and likely turn it to a delicious meal. The bread is so soft! The chocolate croissant is always sold out when we get there around 11am. A friend grew up not too far up the street and told me about this place. One morning I stopped by and picked up croissants, bread & sugar biscuits...they do NOT disappoint!! The bread is SO soft! The croissants are HUGE!!!! The sugar biscuits are a crumbly mess of DELICIOUSNESS!! Such goodness from a plain corner building that doesn't even look open from the front, but when to round the corner you see the small door/counter & all the hustle and bustle. Park, walk up to the doorway/ counter & someone walks up to ask what you want. I haven't tried the sandwiches that they sell but the 3 items I have tried are well worth a trip!! The co workers I have shared the sugar biscuits with can't stop talking about them & ask when I'm going back. It looks like they also have a location in San Jose, which is closer to me, but I have not gone to this one. I enjoy that there is structure to it so if you want to dip it in tea/coffee you can, make a sandwich you can, etc. These croissants are not your typical fall apart/crumble everywhere on your kind of croissant. These have buttery layers with integrity to them. Their chocolate croissant has mini morsels melted throughout the inside which gives it a perfect amount of sweetness. This is the best banh mi bread around. My mother is a Vietnamese war refugee who landed in the Midwest during the late 1970's. For over 40 years, she had not tasted traditional banh mi bread. My parents fortunately relocated to the Bay Area after my sister and I established careers here. After I discovered Bui Phong, I knew I had to share this bread with my mom. Now, whenever I have a chance, I pick up baguettes and/or rolls for my mom so she can make banh mi and have it on the side of her curry at home. My family and I have been loyal customers for more than two decades (I don't know them personally), and ever since they started accepting Apple Pay, our transactions have been smoother than ever. However, it appeared that the credit card terminal had already processed its daily batch and could not accept another transaction. The sweet rolls soft and sweet. They just melt in your mouth. For a bag of sweet rolls it's only $2.50. And a croissant is $1.25 each. Unfortunately I didn't get to try any other items. They were sold out For the most part Covid guidelines are being followed in regards to social distancing. Basically there is a door that you walk up to and order from. Reasons for not rating this bakery higher: * * Customer service wasn't friendly. I get it I got there about 10 min before they were due to close and I guess I was the annoying customer that showed up right before closing (they close at 9pm). ** I saw an employee NOT wearing a mask. Drove here to try out the croissant after seeing it on TikTok. My family loves a good croissant. The drive is about an hour from home to check out their croissant. Let me warn you that parking is limited and at 7 am there was already a line out the door. We ordered 6 chocolate croissants and 2 ham and cheese. The chocolate croissants were $2.50 a piece. Buttery crust tasted like a blend of butter, margarine and other solid fat combination with a strong hint of refrigerator odor due to unused left over product sitting not sealed or covered. The whole package was tasted and all has the unpalatable old fat in refrigerator smell. Biscuit itself was non issues. No quality control of ingredients and proper storage. Our favorite Banh Mi Sandwich place turned us on to this wholesale bakery. Not a date place, but a good place to get some bread or croissants for your date. I really love these large commercial food manufacturing facilities with their large ovens and 6' rolling racks stacked with bread. Fascinating. Would have loved to have toured Mothers Cookies when they were in operation. I am sure that the majority of their business is selling to stores and restaurants, but they also sell to the public. The Bakery is located on Fruitvale Ave. but the entrance is located on 28th street. You can tell this building has been a bakery for a long time. Will have to ask who was the original bakery in this location, judging from the large faded marquees bakery sign on the front of the building. Great place to pick up fresh baked bread products. You can get baguettes, croissants, dinner rolls, sandwich rolls, etc. Great french baguettes and the croissants are quite good, more like a sandwich croissant than a flaky croissant, but still delicious.
