I had a whole house fan timer switch break on me. The HVAC contractor quoted me ~$900 to replace the switch and have a surge protection device installed. Looked around for an electrician since this seemed like an electrical problem and not a HVAC problem. CRKT quoted me a price half of what the HVAC company quoted me. When they got here, they also informed me that I don't necessarily need a surge protection device either but did tell me utility companies/the state now require it so it was ultimately my call. Ultimately went with it since it won't hurt to have.
