Some former coworkers and I had an impromptu reunion at Crompton Ale House on a Thursday night. We arrived earl around 6:30pm when things weren't too crowded. The space was perfect for a big group of us, and we were able to enjoy their Happy Hour (Monday through Friday between 4pm - 7pm) and also some of the bar snacks (Great Calamari and French Fries). The theme of the bar makes it look like an old library, but then the giant TV screens for sports seem to counter the decor. Staff was friendly, but sometimes it was hard to find our server when we wanted to order more food or drinks. Overall, it's a good neighborhood spot. read more

Part 1: My wife and I were in town for our honeymoon June 8th - 15th and stopped in here on our way back to our hotel from a walk around the neighborhood on June 9th. We had a nice lunch and the food and service were quite good. When the waitress found out we were on our honeymoon she gave us a 20% coupon and told us to stop in again during our stay. That was so appreciated!! Part 2: This was like the tale of two restaurants. We had been here earlier in the day on the 9th for lunch and the waitress had given us a 20% coupon when she found out we were in town for our honeymoon (we had just arrived the day before). Our intention was to have dinner, dessert and drinks since we were just sticking to the neighborhood that day and our hotel was only a couple blocks away. I had the French dip, which was quite good and we were enjoying ourselves. Shortly after our food arrived our waiter did a quick flyby asking if everything was OK. Then he never came back. The restaurant was basically empty, only a few people at the bar. He walked past several times, but never stopped at the table. After we finished eating I tried a couple times to get his attention as he walked by, but he was literally looking the other direction. Then he was standing near the host/hostess stand (we were toward the back of the restaurant) and I thought he was looking in our general direction so I stood up and actually started waving at him. Nothing. Finally I called out to a gentleman who appeared to be an owner or manager and he came to the table. I asked for the check which he brought. We decided no dessert, no drinks. Left a very minimal tip and left. Went to a nearby restaurant/bar and spent $56 plus tip on Scotch, chocolate cake and ice cream. Amazing how little it takes to destroy an experience. Yikes. The bartender we encountered was so unbelievably rude and incredulous when we stopped by for a beer and didn't want to order any food. She came over and was extremely rude when my mom took a bite of the cookie that she'd bought at a bakery nearby. She explained that no outside food can be eaten because it's a restaurant and we apologized profusely immediately and put the cookie away. She kept talking down to us and saying how unacceptable it was, even though we'd already apologized and understood. At one point she made a McDonald's reference, I'm guessing because she's Irish and we're American so that's all our tiny brains could handle? Haha. Okay. She left us alone for a while and then when we asked for the check she came back and tried to play nice to get a good tip from us. Not happening after how rude she was. The beer was good but the service needs serious work. Update- someone that works for Crompton is trying to save face by commenting that our encounter is "exaggerated." I can assure you that my family apologized when informed of the policy but the bartender continued to admonish us as if we didn't understand. She absolutely made a reference to McDonald's. Pub in fashion district with nice beer collection and food choices. Went on a busy Friday eve for happy hours and sat at the bar. We ordered draft beers and couple of appetizers. And cheese curds those are dumb there used to be mozzarella sticks. Also I once brought tostitos to the bar because what are these garbage chips. Crompton Ale House is always bumpin' whenever I come here. This is my go-to place after work for happy hour. I've ordered their Grilled Chicken and Reuben sandwiches. Huge portions; great for left overs. I recently ordered the Prosciutto & Wild Mushroom pizza. Unfortunately, I won't be ordering that again because it was too oily and salty. The male bartender was super sweet with a cute little accent. Not overcrowded on the Tuesday night we went. The only reason we really couldn't give a 5 star was that there was a server "helping" us ignored us for a good 30 minutes and multiple rounds then intercepted my friends going to the bar asking if she could help. Huge space for Chelsea standards. High ceilings and nice lighting, not too bright and not too dim. Lots of high-top tables with bar stools...very interactive table setup. My girlfriends wanted to meet at the Ainsworth across the street. But I didn't want to have anything to do with their hoity attitude and mediocre drinks with fancy names and price tag. So I knew this place was new and recommended this instead. Great bar = Lovely atmosphere + awesome food + stiff drinks + fantastic bartenders and people this is a great bar. First of all the service was horrendous, the place itself was disgusting with poor conditions and sticky silverware and glasses. Not only was the place itself under questionable conditions but my colleagues and I witnessed a woman of color being treated so poorly and was being screamed at by a bartender. i came here in need of a good hangover brunch and didnt feel like straying far from the home base, thus crompton ale house. this spot has standard american classics on their brunch menu. my boyfriend and i ordered mac and cheese to share, which i reco everyone orders. it was really good, nothing fancy just classic mac n cheese. for mains he got the turkey bacon club with fries. the club sandwich was huge and he took half of it home. i got the skillet with crumbled sausage, fried eggs, potatoes, peppers onions, and mushrooms. my skillet was good, one complaint was the egg was cooked over hard, i usually prefer them a bit more yolky. service here started off strong, but then fell off. considering there really wasn't anyone else in the restaurant the lack of drink refills was a bit annyoing. we also had to grab the host to get our check and get a doggie bag. read more

Did not enjoy the food and asked the server to return the plate. It was apparent I had only taken one bite out of the sandwich and the remainder of the food (including the fries) was untouched. I insisted they take the plate back and the manager proceeded to come to the table and ask our table what was wrong. I told him I didn't like the food and he tells me "it's exactly how it is on the menu you don't think you should pay for it?!" He continued to argue me down loudly about why I SHOULD pay for a full plate (In front of other customers). This was the most unprofessional experience I have ever endured. I will never eat here again and I suggest you don't as well. Any issues you experience here will not be handled accordingly with the current person in management. I came I ordered slideres and they were well done and my boyfriend ordered a burguer and asked for the burger to be medium rear but the burger was well done, we asked the server for a burger medium rear and she took the burger and bought the same burger again saying that that was a medium rear burger we said that we did not want the burger anymore and talked to a manager a tall man gray hair that did not care at all about the customers and keep saying that the burger was medium rear... Chose this place for a party of 4 due to its proximity to the hotel our friends were staying at. Called early in he day and made a reservation for 4. Requested a booth in the back. Was told no problem. Got there at 6:30 and was told there's a party in the back and we couldn't have a booth so they sat us at the front. However when I got up to use the men's room half way through our meal there was an open booth literally there with no one in it. It is exactly what we reserved and was obviously open for a while so terrible customer service. When stuff like that happens there's no need to even review the food because it's bad customer service like that who cost you a couple stars and doesn't allow a food connoisseur like myself to actually review your food. The first issue we had was when we tried to order a 3/30 Starters and Shares item that has NO EXCLUSIONS, but then we were verbally told that they don't do crab cakes with the 3/$30, even though there was nothing station so in the menu. The hostess was incredibly rude and did not want to hep adjust to our situation. We waited for over and hour for our food, and then two of our steaks were cold and the waiter looked at us like we were crazy for wanting them to take back our food to cook it the correct way and to also make it hot. The food and drinks were amazing! Did not have an issue with it at all. The only issue we had was with the waiter Sean S. Sean ignored us promptly from the beginning when we first ordered soup until the moment when we asked for the check. When we called for our waiter he purposely walked away and made another person come to our table. My friend and I came here for dinner but mostly drinks. We are needed to wait for water so long that I needed to use my own water bottle to fill our water cups, continuously through our stay. Sean completely ignored us and treated us like we were a burden. I have 10+ years in the restaurant industry and I've never seen such horrible service. Lastly, the cologne that he was wearing was so strong that we couldn't take our drinks or even our food. He put on a lot of cologne during the middle of our dining experience here. He purposely made sure that he was nice to other tables around us and when we finally asked our bus boy for him, he pointed to us but walked away. We stayed at our table for a long period of time with no service especially water, which should be easy. We were not demanding, he just seemed like he wanted nothing to do with us from the start. I was in search of quick healthy lunch before my flight and had a taste for salmon. The restaurant in my hotel served some but so did the place across the street...and it looked interesting. I wanted an experience before I left the city so I walked across the street to Compton Ale House. The gent at the door reassured me the salmon was pretty good, but he didn't say it's PHENOMENAL. Came here to watch the Alabama - LSU game yesterday after bolting from "Ain't Worth" across the street. Lots of screens, good friendly crowd which likes college football, great beer selection, attentive bartenders. Had the quesadilla and a burger. Not gourmet, but not bad for pub food. Clean restrooms and fair prices for NYC, $7.50 drafts. I would not come to NYC just to return to Crompton's, but if you are in Chelsea and want a good bar/restaurant with a sports slant, I'd recommend it. read more

A friendly staff and service team was setting up for a private event (starting about an hour after I arrived), but I sat at the bar with about 4-5 others. I was waiting for someone somewhere else, and they don't serve food and I came to Compoton for some hot-wings and a beer. I ordered the Buffalo wings, and a bottle of beer. The wings came out warm (I could immediately hold and put them in my mouth), and were not very "hot" or spicy. Quite disappointing since I was hungry. The beer was fine (it was bottled - I was offered a glass but declined). The kicker is that I spent the night in the bathroom being ill/sick. Not proven to be the wings, but I had nothing else, besides two bottled beers elsewhere. Pre-tip was $18 and I tipped $3.50. Definitely not worth $18 for a happy-hour beer and bad wings. read more
