Plenty of options for those who have a varied pallate for beers with different profiles. The lean brisket and pastrami were completely spot on. So tender, with a nice smoke ring and seasoned in a way that completely allowed the meat to be the shining star. The staff was so friendly and converive. The view of the river from the bar was really nice. You can also peep in on the brew area. The tanks are named after Grateful Dead songs. After a solid afternoon of paddling the local whitewater caps we stopped in with a full hunger and partially dehydrated. What I liked most about Ewe was the beer menu. I'm a dark beer fan so the presence of nearly a half dozen stouts, porters, etc in the middle of summer made me really happy. With a long drive home I had to settle on one though and wasn't disappointed with the Recnep's oatmeal stout. I chugged the first half on delivery to the table as I was damned thirsty. It went down nicely, I'd easily have 2-3 if not for the drive. The food menu is pretty diverse and imaginative. If you're looking for standard dishes this might not be your bread and butter. The quickest stop in South Bend called for some good food and Yelp brought us here! This place is right along the river, so beautiful inside and just as lovely outside where we ended up eating. This is a *COVID times* review and it looked like Crooked Ewe was taking all of the precautions: Every staff member was wearing a mask, they had masks available for guests as well as hand sanitizer at the entrance, tables inside were all very spaced out and they had plenty of seating outside. We started with the crispy cauliflower in the Carolina BBQ sauce. Get it! It's deep fried cauliflower (so don't get it for the lack of calories) and that sauce they drench it in was just so crazy good. Kind of tasted like general tso's in all of the good ways and the cauliflower was still crunchy. We were fighting over last bites. For dinner, I got the OG Fried Chicken Sandwich ($14) and even though the sandwich was killer, I'm still dreaming about the fries it came with. So crispy - so thin - so salty. Seriously good fries. Okay, okay back to the sandwich. A giant piece of chicken not heavily battered on a big brioche bun with yummy sauce. I was happy. I didn't drink but sipped my boyfriends beer (the Cream Ale) (to his dismay) and loved it. They have a huge list of beer on draft and even some wines and ciders. I've been going to the Ewe a long time, mostly because it was one of the only places in town to get good, thoughtful vegan food. Unfortunately, that has been falling off steadily for a few years now. This last trip, we went for brunch. I called ahead to make sure there were vegan brunch items available. We get there and I order vegan brunch tacos. Right before bringing my boyfriend's food to the table, the server comes to the table to tell me "the vegan egg for the tacos isn't working" so I had to pick something off the regular menu on the fly. Fried cauliflower with Tso sauce is good, but standard, not really a standout. Carrots and asparagus are very well executed, but the subtle flavors get a bit lost against the other, spicier dishes. My companion's burger was flavorful and cooked well, but very fatty (not greasy), the tomato served with the burger looked sad . Fries came out cold, too bad, because they would have been stellar. I spent many (most?) of my birthdays in the 2010s in South Bend, and if the auspicious day itself happened to fall on a travel day, we'd choose another day and celebrate it properly. I believe my visit to Crooked Ewe was one of those replacement endeavors, but even if we were jinxing or belating it, I'll take the bad luck/tardiness in exchange for this food any day of the week, and twice on Sundays, because I was born on a Sunday. Get it? We were originally supposed to come on my actual birthday a previous year, but it was closed. When we finally came back, and latisher this time, Marlene was still semi-arguing with me that I wouldn't be able to eat anything here. I generally trust Marlene in most things South Bend, but I spend way too much time on Yelp, and she spends her time much more efficiently and effectively. So while she's helping refugees find housing, furniture, employment, and social connection, I'm figuring out that this random meaty bar on the riverbank has lots of vegetarian options. It's all about upstairs. If you can dine upstairs, dine upstairs. If it's a wait, wait. Really. Wait. The vegetarian stuff is good, and you have more than one or two options, and they're not skimpy with the portion sizes, and you don't feel like your food is an afterthought. Wow, just wow. I had some expectation of this place because a friend from ND took a group of eight there for lunch... but this place thoroughly met and exceeded my expectations in. The place was quite busy on the first floor, but the 2nd floor where we went to sit down was empty, with a nice spacious vibe plus the river view. Their menu was simple and to the point, with every item competing for our eyeballs as we tried our best to make a quick decision. I immediately noticed the elements of fusion galore on the menu, esp. kimchi was found everywhere, along with thai and japanese items. It was either going to be great, or a disaster. So let's discuss food: 1 Lb Brisket (Main, $24) - Of course this being a smoke house we had to get this and it was a slam dunk. SO flavorful & juicy by itself and even better with their tangy BBQ sauce on the side. 1 Lb Pastrami (Main, $24) - This one was also good though not as good as the brisket. It came with pickles and mustard, as pastrami should. Green Papaya Salad (Salad, $12) - The right choice of green to offset our meats. Delectably refreshing w. tangy cashew butter dressing, with various Asian accouterments. Ewe Tso (Side, $14) - Tempura battered cauliflower on a bed of kimchi fried rice w/ runny egg (for you to pop!). I'm usually skeptical when American joints try to use kimchi (I'm Korean) because they always mess it up so bad where kimchi is "that's not kimchi bruh..." or it's sprinkles. This one did not commit either faux pas, though it was just OK. The gently-battered cauliflower was a HIT though. Polenta (Side, $6) - Not too heavy, just right creamy compliment. Brussels Sprouts (Side, $4) - GONE AS SOON AS IT CAME OUT! Crooked Fries (Side, $6) - Really good fries, though on the skinny side, which actually made it even more addictive since it's not too burdensome to eat as those finger-sized fries. They also have amazing selection of beer (well duh) and I ordered summer shandy type beer which went great with the meal. Ask for recommendations and I'm sure servers will knock it out of the park! I stopped in on a Sunday afternoon to sample a flight. Although they had some food options available, I wasn't that hungry and went directly for the flight of beer. Flights here are very flexible. Not only do they have a lot of house beers to choose from, but the flights can be anywhere from 2 to 5 choices of four ounce pours ($2 per choice). Since it was my first time here, I went with the 5 choice option. My selections included the Post 1167 Cream Ale, the Westfield Wheat, the What's My Name Amber, the Vital IPA, and the Paw Paw DIPA. I thought most were quite good with the amber being my least favorite and the a toss up between the cream ale and the IPA as my favorites. Neat little place along the train tracks in Southbend. There is a family section upstairs which came in handy since we had our child. There is no kids menu so I am only giving 4 stores. We ended up getting the kiddo some cheesy polenta but it was pretty messy for. Even a small menu for kids would be nice and help families be able to enjoy the wonderful beer. I wanted nachos but the table next to us said it was pretty spicy so I didn't get it. Instead I got the shrimp pad Thai which was pretty good.
