I looked through the breakfast menu and there were many choices. I settled on the "Kathleen Omelette" which is their spin on a Greek Omelette. The food was very good, but the service was pretty bad. Our waitress was rude, rushed us into ordering within one minute of sitting and seemed annoyed when we weren't ready - we had barely glanced at the menu. We stopped by on our way home from Keenan Honda and we're pleasantly surprised. The service was fast and friendly. The food abundant and delicious. The price was very good. This place is always busy but the wait goes by quick. Delicious food, good service, you won't be disappointed.

My family and drove by to see the Mercer estate and tile works. We stopped for lunch nearly 15 minutes to 2:00pm which is when they close. They served us a delicious lunch despite being so close to closing time. I had a wonderful short stack of chocolate chip pancakes. The picture I took shows them. The staff was very friendly. Love this place. My hubby and I go every Sunday at 7am. They are amazing at customer service...and the food is incredible. Only con is its a bit pricey...but we only eat out a week...and this place is totally worth it. Always have leftover potatoes...which I feed the leftovers to my chickens. This is a favorite spot for breakfast in the area with limited seating, so expect a wait to be seated. Typical diner fare, but there are often interesting specials, so make sure to check out the chalkboard over the counter area. The restaurant often uses local ingredients (e.g. Haring Brothers sausage) in the dishes so that makes it stand out. On today's visit, a busy holiday weekend, we were seated quickly and served promptly. I did have to wait for my side of wheat toast which was served several minutes after the rest of our order arrived. I'd ordered the Cross Keys Hash ($9.75) which was absolutely swimming in some sort of oil (see the attached photos) but otherwise tasted fine and was as expected. My over easy eggs were absolutely cooked perfectly. My husband ordered an omelette which was also cooked expertly. The servers were a little brusque today and our waitress did not remember to refill our coffee even after we asked her to do so. We were able to flag down the bus girl who did bring us more coffee when we asked. We also had ordered food to go and when I asked the server to make a minor change to that order (instead of over easy eggs, we wanted scrambled eggs), she seemed reluctant to do so, but ultimately the order was changed. I would have cancelled it had they not made the change, so I really don't understand the server's response. On previous visits, the wait staff has always been friendly and attentive so I'll chalk this up to an exhausting holiday weekend. Had 2 omelette specials...one with spinach brea cheese sausage roasted walnuts and honey(yes...honey in an omelette)and one with spinach sausage goat cheese and green onions topped with a portobello mushroom sauce. The food is hearty and basic in nature and the sandwiches are pilled high, like what you'd find in a New York style deli. Good home cooking is what has kept this country diner in business for years with a strong local following; However, you plan to dine here, a couple points to note: The seating is very limited. The place is very small, so if you're not early, there will be a wait Gluten-free, apparently hasn't reached the Cross Keys Diner yet, so don't both asking as you'll only get a blank stare from your server as he/she points to a salad. The food is be good, but the staff could use a moral boost. Personally, I like to write positive reviews and it's my hope that Cross Keys will address and correct the staffing concerns noted in the various Yelp review. read more

It's the kinda place that you have to get use to bc if you walked in for the first time you may turn your nose up. It is a diner that has not renovated or changed in many years. Worn stools, tables, shelves, etc all needed up dating 10 years ago at least...lol. Staff is efficient but not engaging. Food served in a quick timely manner. The food makes up for it all...delicious and fresh. My feta cheese omelette was hot and scrumptious. The rye bread toast was perfectly toasted and the good kind of rye... Jewish rye. Hubby's eggs also made exactly as requested and bacon crispy and perfectly cooked as well. The chicken wrap, club sandwich and milkshakes at the next table caught my interest...looked amazing. So overall, if in the area it is a decent place to stop for good food at reasonable prices. Just don't have high expectations for atmosphere. We will definitely be back. read more

While visiting the area my friend and I stopped in for breakfast on Sunday morning and it was fantastic. I had two eggs over easy, hashbrowns, bacon and buttered rye toast. It was all delicious. I have lived in the area over 25 years and have had at least 7 occasions to go to this diner. The first 5-6 times I had somewhat surly wait staff and I kept thinking that perhaps they were having a bad day. The food is always fine and served quickly but the service is so bad it leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth. I am now convinced they have surly staff (who have remarkable job security considering the the same offenders have been there for years) and I can't give them my business again. read more

Love this place. You must know that there is only one meal I eat here - Chipped Beef (or as we always called it, dried beef gravy - and scrapple. They have other tempting foods - omelets and pancake with interesting combinations - but when push comes to shove, I can not resist the gravy and scrapple. the food was sub par BUT the service was deeply upsetting! it is so bad I want to give you a zero, but that's not possible... so I give you... a 1. the awful wait staff was making vulgar hand signals behind us wanting to clear the table after only 30 minutes of us SITTING at the table!! the food itself took 20 minutes to come out! which left of limited time to eat before the check was shoved in my face! there were several middle fingers thrown behind our backs, leading to a fear of urgency, and the second me and my four guests arose from the table, It seemed as the entire wait staff ran at the table while making rude comments about our being there. for context, we were very quick and courteous throughout our interactions, which were also quite limited. I've been here a few times since my first review. Each time, the food is consistently good, and the service is consistently awful. Staff is rude and unwelcoming. Most notable is our experience a few weeks ago. I brought my 72-year-old father in and we ordered sandwiches. No less than 30 seconds after the waitress walked away, my father changed his mind and got up to catch her. I was shocked when she told him "The kitchen has already started it, sorry." Then she said that he could add something but would still have to pay for the first order. Now, I'm not an idiot, or a rude, entitled patron, and I wouldn't demand a change to an order after a reasonable amount of time has passed UNLESS I was prepared to pay for two dishes. However, it is simply not possible that the chef even had our ticket by the time my dad asked to change his sandwich order. This was lazy, rude service and not appreciated. After years of similar treatment at this place, I've had enough and won't be returning. No pancake is worth the ridiculous attitude thrown around by staff who are miserable and disinterested in providing a pleasant experience. read more

This morning my hunger pangs were defeated by a housemade macadamia nut Belgian waffle heaped with gorgeous local strawberries, very stiff orange-vanilla Creme Chantilly and toasted coconut. The waffle was light and airy with a perfectly crisp exterior. Sublime! A perfect summer breakfast. Sadly, notwithstanding the dish's immense eye-appeal (see photos), I could eat only a scant half of the serving. My all-time favorite brunching companion and personal Superhero, Mr. M, graciously agreed to handle the balance. Excellent bottomless coffee, as always. BTW, we had the primo location in the house: Counter seats with a view of the kitchen, where the magic happens. I hadn't been inside Cross Keys Diner in at least a decade, but walking in it seemed like time stood still. Everything looked and felt the same. This had always been a community center where locals stopped in for a meal along with their neighbors and business associates to enjoy the home cooking and the hominess of the décor. It still is. I sat on a spinner directly in front of the kitchen entrance and was immediately serviced by all the workers who were picking up orders or refilling their coffee mugs. The menu is diverse, but the real deal is in their breakfast specials. I opted for the Thunder Cakes, made with a mix of fruit and nuts and a substantial pancake mix that made even the short stack (2 pancakes) more than I could manage. The melted butter and house syrup absorbed into the coarse texture of the pancakes like water on parched land. The taste was healthy and filling. I added more syrup three times during the meal as it continued to disappear. Yes. It was way sweet enough. I couldn't finish the 2 cakes, and wondered how anyone could digest a full stack. It did sit a little heavy in my stomach for a few hours, but not enough to reach a discomfort level. I realized later in the day the true meaning of "Thunder." No need to elaborate. Cross Keys is still a meeting place that takes its cues from the 1980's, right down to the rock music of the era. The staff is warm and enthusiastic. Definitely worth another round. read more

If a restaurant decides to close early without posting on their website and they decide to take a party of 7, five minutes before they close, it would be awfully nice of them to not treat those 7 people like unwanted stepchildren. The diner seems like a great local place and the food is not bad, but the service we received was horrible. The hostess was pleasant and hospitable, but once we passed her threshold, we learned quickly that we were not welcome. Not one hello, welcome, how are you or even so much as a smile. Orders were taken with no eye contact while a tall blonde woman, who seemed to be the ring leader, gave us a deep, dirty look from a distance the entire time we were there. Things like straws and side dishes were angrily dropped onto the table and so on and so on. Just really poor service. The food was good. Typical diner fare, served in typical diner preparations. The cook gave me a bit of an uneasy feeling, though, as he stuffed his face with some sort of sandwich from behind the line, actually shoving his food into his mouth with his finger. Hospitality isn't difficult. It's simply a matter of choosing to give your paying guests a good experienceit or not. We may have caught you on an off day when everybody was happy about leaving early, but you made us feel very uncomfortable and that is inexcusable. read more

Excellent stuff... scratch made breakfast (and lunch), I went with the cornmeal buttermilk pancake special and it was excellent. I noticed they also had a side of turkey sausage which I'm always up for because I can pretend I'm eating healthy. Upon ordering it I was told it was chorizo style... who does that? AWESOME! Service was superfast and friendly, and the whole place just had a really cool, eclectic feel to it, right down to the mismatched coffee cups and the small shelves of a variety of hot sauces for retail sale by the register. Had been meaning to come here for awhile, and we were out early so we gave it a go. This place gets BUSY, and I can totally see why.
