CrossFit Almaden is such a special place! All of the instructors are absolutely amazing - so knowledgeable, encouraging, supportive and always welcoming with a smile. What really makes it stand out is the people who come to the classes..it feels like a true community. Everyone is so helpful and uplifting, and there's never any pressure. I always leave feeling happier, stronger, and grateful. I honestly love coming here - it's like my happy place!

I am finally getting around to writing a review! To be honest I tried to write a review several times but was nervous that I wouldn't do the gym justice. I also can't write them a review without writing a lot so bear with me here... I have been At CFA for 2 years now and wouldn't give it up for anything, but before I came to CFA I didn't feel that way about CrossFit. I started CrossFit at another gym that almost had me quitting forever. This other gym was full of competitive people who weren't welcoming in the least. The other gym also took advantage of me being new and inexperienced and had me paying almost 2,000 a month for private lessons because they said I need to "understand the movements more". Trying to trust this gyms judgment I did that for almost a year before I left. After leaving my other gym I got in contact with Patrick one of the gym owners to give CFA a try before I swore CF off for good. When I contacted him about trying out CFA for a week and seeing how much it cost he came back with "come on in for free of charge, if you like it you will stay and if not its no problem". Coming from a gym who would have charged me 100 dollars for a weeks drop in, I was instantly feeling good about this gym. After just 2 days I knew I was staying.. and here's why.. CFA is owned and run by the most genuine people I've ever met. They could care less about your money and more about taking care of you as an athlete and a person. On top of the owners being so great, the coaches are not only knowledgeable but a lot of fun. Then you have your members who are extremely welcoming as well. Once you walk into the gym you will be instantly greeted by someone whether it be a owner, coach, or member. Since I came from a gym of really competitive people, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to keep up with everyone. However at CFA anyone of all abilities and ages can do the WOD no matter what (I even finally got my mom to sign up and she has no athletic background what so ever but loves the gym). The coaches will modify your movements based on what you can and can't do and teach you ways that will progress you to doing the actual movement. When I walked into the gym I had a lot of bad habits and even injuries that I brought over from my old gym and CFA worked with me to become an even better athlete than I ever could have imagined. To this day I am still progressing and seeing other progress all the time. If you have made it this far into this post I would say come on in, try it out for yourself, and the gym will sell itself. Not only will it sell itself but every person at CFA will take good care of you. This gym has changed my life in so many ways, too many to write because I've clearly written enough already! So come on in.. You're just a class away from it changing your life for the better too:)

(I have decided to leave the name of the individual that I interacted with tonight out because they…read moreare young and inexperienced) I was at the gym tonight during PEAK hours. I think I got there around 6 PM. There was a line 3 deep waiting for two fly machines. There was an individual that was actually putting their phone down on the fly machine and then walking over to the barbells across the gym, doing a set and then coming back to the fly machine and doing a set. The three of us were looking at each other like does the world revolve around this person? Clearly the answer was no. I asked this person what they were doing...and they said I'm supersetting. So I asked this person, how long were they going to superset? They said, I'll be here a long time. Really? Not during Peak hours. Sorry. When I went to change the weight on the fly machine, they got in my face and "management" and I do use that term loosely, intervened. Rather than telling this person that it was PEAK hours, and there was a line 3 deep waiting for the fly machine, he asked the other person on the fly machine how many sets they had left? Then he turned to me as well as the two other people that were patiently waiting and said..."he's almost done, perhaps you can wait"? So let me paraphrase this for all of you. During PEAK hours when there is a line of paying customers waiting for a machine, it's OK to save it while you go off and do a totally different exercise...again, while we all wait patiently for a customer that has zero respect for their peers. Ok. Got it. To "management"... and you know who you are. You're talking to a guy that's owned two really large software companies. You'd know who they are. I say that not to impress you, but I say that because I have a little experience in "management". It's a really hard job. It requires you to make very tough decisions that are sometimes not favorable. But some people are not cut out for management. I don't think that's you. Next time make the right decision. The tough decision. I think you've got it in you. Besides, I'd rather not head over to Planet Fitness...wink-wink.

This has been my preferred gym location since 2022. Although I have visited several other locations, I consistently choose to drive 20 minutes to this facility because of its spacious layout and the level of comfort I feel while working out here. Even when I have noticed that two to three stair masters were out of order or certain machines had ongoing issues that I previously reported to staff, I continued to attend this location. Today, while using the assisted dip machine near the aerobics room, I noticed that the pole on the left side became loose during use. I immediately approached the front desk to report the issue, with the manager Johnathan present. I expressed my concern that this malfunction could have resulted in a serious injury. Unfortunately, there was not an ounce of sympathy or even apology at the very least from the manager which raised concerns about how guest safety issues are handled. I handled the issue in a calm and graceful manner, but if it was another guest, I wondered how the outcome would've looked.

I basically come to use the weight machines and then I use the treadmill. My only complaint in that regard is that half of the treadmills don't have the heart rate sensor working. Very frustrating. Lucky for me, I have an Apple Watch and can check that out on my own later on. My other big complaint is what they have on the tvs. Look, most of us come there to workout which is part of stress relief. I'm on the treadmill, have my music playing in my ears and then I am forced to stare at all of the tvs that have the news on the screens. For those 30 minutes or so, I DO NOT want to stare on the friggin news! It could be so much nicer if they had something relaxing and calming like a nature scene. I can't believe that most people want to look at the news right now. We see enough of it and our brains need a break. Anyway, besides those two issues, I am very happy with Planet Fitness.

The first few months I needed a LOT of guidance and suggestions, but he was always there to correct my form an explain things clearly so I wouldn't hurt myself. Starting as a complete beginner was really daunting, but over time things became easier and I not only did I feel stronger, but my back hurt less, and I had more energy in general. I started attending more classes and after nearly a year I felt completely different from before. I'm still improving and learning because Mike knows how to increase the difficulty and make modifications for people of different skill levels. I've got long terms goals I want to hit, and I feel like I'm moving toward them! The mood in the classes is great too, in addition to the health benefits (which are many!), it's just a nice expereince and I look forward to going to class. Everyone there is really supportive and friendly, and Mike maintains an upbeat and positive environment. It's a very family friendly place too, you will spot the occasional kid chilling in the corner or even a baby in their stroller. I cannot recommend this place enough! I work at a health club in Santa Cruz and have always wondered what it would be like to try out a gym I don't work at. The equipment was pretty nice and it was not busy at 3:30pm. It was easy to do a day pass and the other members kept to themselves. They have nice locker rooms (bring your own lock) and seem like a great place over all :) there are no classes but if weight lifting and cardio are your interests it is a solid place to be.

My main issue with this facility is a specific group of members that have started to come in. There is a large group of people who come in to work with a husband/wife team of independent trainers. The trainers are rude and take up tons of equipment that they do not actively use- like they are trying to reserve it for their future use. When you ask them if you can work in or if they are using something they are rude and look at you like you are insane for even talking to them. This group of people act like they are the only people in the gym and completely lack awareness and any etiquette. They leave weights on machines, don't wipe anything down, and leave huge messes in the restrooms. My other issue is the amount of recording that they do- the gym has now banned the use of free standing tripods (great) but now they are using other pieces of equipment to prop their phones up on and record their workouts. On top of that- there is no regard or awareness for someone in the back of their video. I know that I have been in the back of their recordings, which I do not want to be, and have asked them multiple times to move their phones or not record and they are just rude about it and start talking crap. I have taken these issues to the front desk staff and management. No one does anything about it. I brought it up to the girl at the front desk this past weekend and she basically told me that because they are bringing in so much business they can do what they want. If that is the case then this business clearly does not value all of its members equally.

Anyway, there are three key things for me when it comes to a gym. First is cleanliness, second is shower facilities, third is equipment. AVAC is a relatively small gym and I tend to go at off hours. This means not many people, so thankfully it's very clean inside. If you think about a 24 Hour Fitness or similar, they have hundreds of people constantly working out, there's no way to uphold hygiene standards. AVAC, despite being small, has frequent cleanings happening, which is nice. The showers at AVAC are... okay. On the plus side, they provide towels, which is a dealbreaker for me. Who wants to bring their own towel to a gym? So that's a big convenience factor. The towels have been bleached and washed to the point they are marginally more absorbent than copy paper and quite rough, but I guess a towel is a towel. The showers themselves are workable but not ideal. Communal in nature, which I personally find awkward, but going at off hours at least allows me to have them to myself or only 1-2 others at most. If it was packed I'd probably wait, it's just too weird. The shampoo and body wash are not very high quality, kind of reminds me of what you'd get at a cheap motel. But again, at least it's there. I also don't want to cart my own soap around. For the gym's size, the equipment variety and quantity is good. I've never not been able to get a treadmill, I've always been able to get the free weights I want, and there are usually benches available. The only thing in short supplies are squat racks, of which there are two, and space for deadlifts, which is basically also two. I would say the gym's clientele leans towards... not people doing those types of exercise. So I haven't typically had to wait, but again I also don't go at peak hours. There are also tons of machines, if you're the type of person who thinks isolation exercises are good. Better than nothing I suppose, but that's just me. AVAC offers a lot of free classes, of which I've taken none. They also have a snack bar, which I've never used. There's also a pool (not the swim school pool which is like 2.5' high) and a kiddie pool outside, neither of which I've been in. And there are tennis courts and pickleball and some outdoor fitness area, which, you guessed it, I have never been to. I wouldn't say AVAC is a destination gym the way Bay Clubs are, but if you're closeby it's probably the best one around. They also have plenty of parking in back in two lots.

AVAC's staff is always service with a smile. The young woman at the front desk with short hair and…read morea nose ring is always so friendly and welcoming and always remembers my name.
