If you are ready to get back into a fitness routine - Kindred is your place! CrossFit Kindred has a new location on Quimby and Capitol and this facility is more spacious and has more amenities than the previous location. All fitness levels are welcomed and all movements can be modified to suit your skills. The coaches are very patient and knowledgeable. Aside from that, they are serious about sanitizing gym equipment and keeping everything clean. Like most people during the pandemic - I bought a Peloton and bike at home. Solid box with great leadership. I've been working out at Kindred for a few months now. It's my first time getting back into crossfit in 4 years after a crossfit injury and subsequent surgery took me out of the game for a while. If I could, I'd give this place 10 stars. I've tried everything to keep myself in shape: personal trainers, bootcamps, p90x, insanity... and the list goes on. After months of complaining about my lack of physical activity, my boyfriend suggested I should try Crossfit. I've heard about Crossfit before and saw all those memes floating around online making fun of it but never actually looked into it so I called up a few boxes and scheduled intro sessions. A few actually scared me away... They're INTENSE. Most of the Crossfit boxes were just ok - nothing stood out about them that made me want to join. DUN DUN DUN! After a few weeks of searching, I found Crossfit Kindred! I scheduled an into session with Jeff (one of the owners and coaches) and got my behind handed to me. I've always thought I was in decent shape all my life but man was I wrong. In one 15 minute workout, I was exhausted and on the floor. After giving me some recovery time, Jeff was super nice and walked me though all the information and answered all my questions. What I loved best was he was not at all pushy. He gave me all the info papers and told me that I could go home and think about it. Which sold me right then and there and I signed up on the spot. Fast forward 6 months later and I'm still here! This is the most consistent I've ever been with working out and I never thought I'd ever get to the point of waking up at 8AM wanting to work out and head to CFK. I come for the work outs, I stay for the coaches and other members. CFK has the most family oriented atmosphere I've ever seen at a box. The box is perfect for new students as well as seasoned cross fitters. Both coaches Jeff and Cindy take pride in making sure everyone is technically sound with their movements to avoid injury and for efficiency. If you don't understand the movements, they walk you through it step by step thoroughly explaining what the move is for and why it's done. I started coming to Crossfit Kindred about a month ago and really love the vibe here. My sister works out here so I decided to give it a try with a super good deal they had. I do enjoy the different workout they create for everyone to do. Its nice that there is a community of supportive members to help make the workout easier (as much as I think the workout is super hard). Jeff and Cindy the dynamic duo of crossfit. They will both push you to your limit and warn you to keep away from the ledge. It's like they actually care. The location is a pain because of traffic, but I consider Crossfit Kindred worth the pain of traffic to attend. They gym itself is very small and the people that attend are a great group of folks. I have been a member of this community for seven months now. I am working out consistently for longer than I ever have in my life. I owe this to Kindred. This gym is special and different from many other places for two main reasons: 1) You can't be the price. 2) You can't beat the ammount of support you get from this community. I was in SJ for 2 months and I was looking to find a box where I could keep up with my Olympic lifts. I discovered that Kindred was extremely close to where I was staying, so I decided to check it out. In 2 months time, I learned so much more than I could have expected and I slowly began to feel like Kindred was a home away from home. I only participated in the Olympic weightlifting program, so this review is with respect to that. I don't write very many reviews on Yelp unless I feel that that place is THAT awesome to even mention. So here it goes. I'm a working mother of 2 young kiddos. Time to me is very precious. I have tried working out on my own and with a trainer but all ended with the same results - me wasting money because I didn't go or ended up with no results. I wanted to find something that would have me working out smarter not harder. I'm not the most fit person the world. Heck, I'm not fit PERIOD. A friend had suggested Crossfit to me awhile ago and that thought of it made me want to curl into the fetal position. After years of avoiding, I finally did some research and found Kindred. It's a small gym but it packs a big hearted community. The coaches, Jeff and Cindy, are awesome. I had this image of drill sargents barking orders at me and belittling me. They have built a safe place for anyone of any fitness level to feel they can conquer any workout and feel accomplished. The people I've met here have been awesome as well. Everyone is helpful and everyone is rooting for you to finish strong. I'm not going to say that this whole time I've been here it has changed my body drastically but I can say that being here has change my mental thoughts about what I am capable of achieving. Yes, all my friends and family believe I have drank "the Kool-aid". But if it gets me to feel good about working out and gets my ass to the box to work out, what's the problem? I did a couple of workouts here while being home on emergency leave. My in laws live near this place so i figure i check em out. This place is brand new located on Tully by Chuck E. Cheese. The facility is really clean and spacious enough to do all your Crossfit movements. The space behind the warehouse provides running routes and group stretch and other outdoor WODS. The head trainer/owner (Jeff Muya) greeted me with a professional and welcoming attitude as he walked me throughout the facility. In the front was a check in counter with a computer and shirts for sale that were displayed on the wall. You walk through the hallway, past the bathrooms and come to the main floor where all the magic happens. pull up rigs, rings, rower, medicine balls, squat racks are just some of the equipment that was in their arsenal. rubber matting lined the whole warehouse floor for maximum non slip grip and the huge garage door provide easy access to the back lot. In my 3 days that i worked out there, Jeff ran his classes like a pro! We would warm up with some light stretching and some bodyweight movements to get the blood pumping and to loosen the joints. He would explain the workout of the day and then go into the standards for what each movement had to be in order to count as a rep. The personal attention you get while executing the movements during the workout made me feel like he was watching out for proper form and safety. Post workout consisted of light stretching and a handful of mobility movements to ease recovery. Overall, I highly recommend any experienced and newly inspired crossfiters to give them a try and learn something new. I myself have been crossfitting for about a year and have recently completed Level 1 trainer course, but just discussing and sharing crossfit knowledge/articles with Jeff, I was able to take away some things that improved my understanding of fitness. CrossFit Kindred lives up to their name, and i'd be lying if I didn't admit i'm looking for that same level of camaraderie out here in Boston (haven't found anything like CrossFit Kindred here yet though). I've been to so many boxes since I first began crossFit October of 2015 I think it was, but there wasn't much of an incentive for me to stay with any one box. To me, CrossFit was something I could access anywhere, any place. BUT within just one month (really instantly) I felt like CrossFit Kindred reached a special place in my heart. Kindred really stands in a league of their own. From their excellent coaches (they're damn funny and cool too), to their amazing app (nice touch by the way), to even using colored crayons to make the numbers on the weights easier to see for people with poor eyesight like me haha, I will sincerely miss this box. I have been Crossfitting for a little over a year now and began my training at a Crossfit box in Fremont. I moved to San Jose and had to find a local Crossfit box that had the same family feel environment. I searched around the San Jose area, finding out that most Crossfit boxes were overpriced and over populated. It was very important to me that the box that I trained at had dedicated trainers that focused on their students using proper technique. I began working out at Crossfit Kindred in October of 2011 with Jeff Muya (Head Trainer). I appreciate his involvement in my training and value the skills that he brings to each training session. Jeff's training philosophy is getting back to the basics. Throughout my years of working out, this has been the first time ever that I have been able to do back squats with perfect form. I lost a total of 16 pounds. I know I could've lost more. I participated in a 6 week fitness challenge which includes fitness, nutritional support and most importantly accountability. My coach is a pain...and this is an excellent thing because my workouts kick a-double-s. I joined in for the introductory boot camp to jump start my conditioning and join the regular workouts down the road. I honestly didn't know what to expect because I was seriously intimidated by the cross fit movement. I am so glad I took the leap because I just fell in love with the community of coaches and members. As I was wheezing and praying to God to end my suffering, I would hear someone encourage me to keep moving...to finish strong. It really is amazing what your body can do. I am always last on the mile and I whine when burpees are part of the workout, but thanks to my coaches and the other members...I finish and feel accomplished for not quitting. By far this is the best CrossFit family I could ever ask for. I began this get fit journey a little over 6 months ago and I have to say I have NO regrets. I'm not gonna lie I was scurred the first day of "Boot Camp" but I showed up ready to work. And that's the thing showing up is half the battle. I have been doing crossfit for about 5 years now, primarily at another crossfit gym in San Jose, and decided to switch to CF Kindred recently after realizing that I was no longer getting results at the old place. I quickly realized that the way the program operates at Kindred was totally different and miles better than my old gym. Kindred is a relatively new gym, just over a year old as I write the review. Because it is so new, the members tend to be newer to crossfit and not the typical veteran "firebreather" types. If you are brand new to crossfit, or are simply curious to find out more about the crossfit movement, Kindred is a perfect place to go. Jeff and Cindy, who are the owners and trainers, are two of the nicest people you will ever meet. They are highly detail oriented and very hands on with their coaching. They tailor workouts to individual skill levels, so whether you are a rank beginner or a 5 year crossfit veteran, you will always perform at your appropriate level. This is important as it also reduces the risk of injury. No one pushes you to exceed your level of ability, which is a common thing at many crossfit gyms unfortunately and contributes to the notion that crossfitters are crazed cultists who literally kill themselves physically. Yes, it is true that crossfit workouts are intense and push you beyond your comfort level, but there is a distinct difference between a good high intensity workout and pushing hard in a crazed ego driven rage. As far as Kindred's facilities go, it's a smaller gym compared to other crossfit gyms in the area, and equipment can be an issue with larger classes, but generally class size is small and there are enough plates, bars, kettlebells, etc for everyone. The best thing about it being a small gym with smaller classes is that the sense of community is awesome. You quickly get to know everyone and there is a wonderful sense of camaraderie which in my opinion is not possible at the larger crossfit gyms in the area. Crossfit began as a bit of a community driven grass roots thing and the reality is that as it has become more popular and mainstream over the years, some gyms have failed to capture the community spirit or have lost it over time. Luckily Kindred has that community spirit and that is a reflection of Jeff and Cindy. While other gyms refer to their members as "athletes", members at Kindred are "students" which to me says a lot about how thing work there. Members constantly learn and grow, much like in any academic environment, but you also have a lot of fun along the way. The individual success stories of members at Kindred are really inspiring, even to me after 5 years of crossfitting. So, if you are reading this, chances are you are checking out all the crossfit gyms in the area. Don't underestimate the value of a smaller gym like Kindred. Really pay attention to the sense of community at other gyms. Watch how much instruction the coaches really provide in relation to class sizes. As a beginner, individual attention and instruction is incredibly important to ensure a good positive experience and safety. Like the little engine that could, Kindred isn't big and flashy like some of the other gyms, but it makes up for it with a big heart and a program that lets you focus on a pace that is best for you. read more

Started CrossFit Kindred over a month ago. There are a lot of great things about Kindred. Don't let the location turn you off. I know traffic can be a headache there with all the construction but it's worth it. The workouts are awesome and you'll definitely see results and improvements. You'll definitely be pushed whenever you're there but they're also about getting the techniques down. I have been a member since June 2015 and have seen major growth in a short amount of time. Prior to CFK, I worked out at Orangetheory Fitness in Willow Glen which was fun, but I felt like it was not challenging enough after awhile. The best part about CFK is you do not have jam packed classes and there are no waitlists like popular gyms. If there is not enough space inside, the coaches make room outside! With the recent expansion, there is plenty of room for everyone :) When people say there is a sense of community here, they are not joking. After my very first workout, I was invited to a CFK outing that same day where I was introduced to other members. I instantly felt welcomed and am happy there are no cliques here. I moved to Crossfit Kindred from another crossfit gym about 5 months ago because I was looking for better camaraderie than what was at my current gym. I, without a doubt, found it here. The classes are small so there's always enough equipment for everyone and the coaches aren't spread too thin so they can pay equal attention to everyone. All the members here are very laid back and I've made some great friends. It's a very encouraging and supportive environment. We are all there to help each other do our best. We also like to do fun things outside the gym like participate in local competitions or just check out BBQ joints! If anyone is looking to get fit and make great friends, this is the place for you. If you're looking for a killer workout with knowledgeable coaches that pushes you to results this is a great place for you. CrossFit is no joke. The workouts there are incredible and are damn near impossible to replicate at a normal gym like 24 Hour Fitness. What makes Kindred the place to be are the coaches and its people. The coaches, Jeff & Cindy, take their time to understand your goals and abilities and pushes you accordingly. I was there for several months and improved my fitness by leaps. I even improved my flexibility! The people who regular at Kindred are very friendly and supportive. The culture is definitely family oriented. That was another huge draw I didn't know I even wanted. Classes - Classes are an hour and are good sized. You won't get lost in the crowd. There is a great mix of genders and ages as well. Some evening classes do get packed. Variety - They offer different classes base on ability. They even have courses specifically for Olympic weightlifting and kids. They offer open gym but the hours aren't all day. Coaches - Friendly, knowledgeable and approachable. They're certified to boot. There's only 2 at the moment. Equipment - There is enough equipment to support the class sizes for the workouts. Bars, kettle bells, weighed balls, jump ropes and weights are a plenty. For large classes you may have to share pull-up bars. Layout - The gym is not huge but don't let that fool you. I have been going to this gym for a little over a year and never knew about Crossfit prior to joining this gym. I was looking for a new way to exercise and this kind of workout was very intriguing. I was super intimidated by the movements, weights and seeing everyone do such a great job in the beginning, and am glad I decided to give it a shot. The coaches, Jeff, Cindy and George are great! They showed me proper technique and gave me the constant support and push I needed to start becoming more confident. I am very happy with how far I have come since a year ago and credit this to my coaches and my hard work. As a community, I believe this is one of the major strengths of this gym. Though it is not one of the biggest "boxes" out there, it has a strong community presence of people who are all of the same mindset. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming. Although we are all of different skill sets and strengths, it makes all the difference when people encourage you and give you that high five for doing your best. Crossfit Kindred is definitely a place for community, family and positive energy! If you are looking for a new place or kind of way to work out, it is definitely worth giving this place a try. read more
