I was looking for a Box to participate in the Murph Challenge this Memorial day with my girlfriend and I. I got to email a bunch of gyms in Long Beach and Paul was able to reply to me back next day. Paul was very welcoming and said I was more than welcome to join his box with no drop in fee. Other boxes wanted to charge me and some didn't even bother to reply back to me. Paul offered if I wanted to buy a Memorial day Murph shirt he was making for the gym. Paul even included his personal cell phone number incase I had any further questions. The gym itself is tucked away in the industrial park of Signal Hill. It looks like there is plenty of private parking. The box had a very very large area, tons of equipment, dozens of barbells, a mountain of hitemp bumper plates, kettlebells, dumbells, wallballs, and concept 2 rowers. There was a separate room with a smaller rig, astro turf, and olympic lifting platforms, I honestly didn't go inside there. There was so many people for Murph, I couldn't tell or meet Paul in person. I had no idea what he looked like. I got to meet one of the members name Sean and another one I forgot his name. He was full of tattoos and had gauge-less ears. Sean was super friendly and told me to stretch out as I was waiting in the front desk awkwardly. They were both very welcoming. I hope you're reading this but thank you Paul for being so welcoming and hosting your box to a fellow Veteran! read more

If you decide to try CrossFit Reality, be very cautious with the owner, Paul, and what he tells you regarding memberships. The other owner, Nelson is super cool, but unfortunately, he doesn't handle the day to day operations. Paul's strategy is to misrepresent himself and CrossFit Reality's membership terms. Paul comes across as an honest, trustworthy Veteran that you can make a deal with on a handshake, like most other reputable CrossFit gyms. However, he is the complete opposite. Paul explained that the way Wodify (the billing system and performance tracker) was set up, for the rate he was giving me, had to be set up as a 1 year contract in Wodify. Similar to another Yelp review on here, Paul verbally explained to me, with another person looking at the gym that day, "We (CFR) offer a service here, if you're not happy at anytime, you can leave your contract, we don't want unhappy members, but I am confident that you will want to stay." Paul has misrepresented himself to countless members and when they get fed up from a variety of issues at the gym and want to leave, he will not financially allow them leave. Paul has his membership coach email them using legal jargon and scare tactics into staying in their contracts. I found out about CrossFit in 2008. I've had my CrossFit Level 1 Trainer since 2011. I travel around a lot for work and have been a member at about 10 CrossFit gyms. I have never experienced anything like this at any other CrossFit gym. The gym is a beautiful facility that has the potential to be an elite CrossFit gym in the area. For the sake of the members, I hope things improve. The members are great, I miss them, and ultimately they are the ones suffering. They are stuck in contracts that they want out of for a variety of reasons, such as: constantly changing coaches, programming inconsistencies, and negative environment when Paul is around. If you decide to try CFR for yourself, I suggest you attend Jared's or Rob's classes. Coach Jared has a wealth of knowledge, he is a great lifting coach, and will work with you on improving your technique and numbers. Coach Rob is a good programmer and fun coach. He is currently doing the programming, hopefully, Paul will let him continue. Paul has pushed away ALL of his coaches. I'm writing this review because I wish I would have had a warning. I'm tired of seeing my friends miserable at this gym, being bullied into finishing out a contract that they were tricked into in the first place. read more

Nice facility but BEWARE OF THE CONTRACT AND THE OWNER PAUL. He promised one thing, and delivered an entirely different experience. It's more complicated to leave this gym than any other place I've spent time in. Before signing up, He assured me that I could leave the gym at anytime (I've been a member of CF Mean Streets, CF Intersect and CF Rec Center... All great experiences). Initially, I came over with friends from another gym that had closed. When a number of us (about 30 people) realized that there was zero coaching and programming, a lot asked to leave. Some had to pay 3 months and sign a legal agreement not to post anything disparaging about them on Yelp/Facebook. Others opted to stay and wait out their contracts. Numerous friends were desperate enough to pay the fee and sign the document. That's how bad it was. I was told by the owner, when I first arrived, that I could leave if I wasn't happy with the services... Paul's words - "We offer a service here, if you're not happy, you can leave, we don't want unhappy members." After months of programming that didn't make sense and the owners inability to coach and properly instruct... I found another gym. When I asked that my membership be terminated, I was told I would have to pay out the remaining balance. The reason I found that surprising was that a few months earlier, the owner assured me that I could leave if I wasn't happy. So I was stuck. Stuck with an owner that coerced me into a contract and then denied his initial assurance. Nice space, Definitely not worth the $150-$200 a month in my opinion. You're better off checking out other gyms in the area first. Gym4 in Belmont Heights, Code 3, Los Al, BPM Crossfit. These are all Crossfit gyms that will offer a few months at a price that is comfortable and enough time to really see if it's a right fit. Side Note: if you look at some of the Reviews on this page, over 90% of them are from folks who have since left for other gyms, dropped in one time or are current members who have never experienced other gyms so they don't have a reference. Just an observation. Also kinda odd that there are no original coaches or members who belong to CF Reality. I was warned before joining that the people leave because of Paul... I first came to Crossfit Reality about two months ago after being unhappy at my previous gym. I heard about it from some friends and wanted to check it out for myself. First thing I noticed when I walked in was how spacious and clean the gym was. I was immediately greeted by Paul, the owner, who spent about an hour answering any and all questions I had. He was extremely helpful so, I decided to drop in for a class. After one class, I was hooked. The whole atmosphere here was different. Instead of a "lift as heavy as you can" mentality, there was a huge focus and emphasis on form and technique, which I really appreciate. I felt extremely comfortable with how knowledgable all of the coaches are. Safety and the well being of the members is extremely important. The coaches take the time to get to know you and work with your weakness to enable you to excel in all areas. All of the coaches are encouraging and extremely helpful. The gym itself is very spacious and the equipment is in great condition. You can tell Paul takes a lot of pride in his gym and wants his members to succeed at what they do. In fact, all of the coaches do. There are a ton of class times available and you don't ever have to worry about a class being full, which is really nice. The open gym times on Saturday AND Sunday are a huge bonus too! I am extremely happy with my crossfit experience here. Love this gym! I travel for work, so I hit up boxes for a couple of months at a time & this one I was super sad to leave. Classes are very structured & progressive, with a focus on improvement (which is what we all want, right?) My coaches--Paul, Jason & John were absolutely wonderful & doing the workouts with people of multiple levels of fitness keeps you in that "get better" mode. =) Extra perks: this gym has classes running pretty much all day through the week, with a Saturday AND Sunday class as well, which is hard to find! Equipment is all newer & in good working condition & the gym stays clean & organized. Lastly, a lot of members (including myself at the time) order yummy meals from PaleoZone, which are delivered to the gym twice weekly, making it more convenient to make better food choices. I like to think that there are two types of crossfitter's those that practice the religion of Crossfit (think the stereotype crossfitter) and those that just want to get in shape without killing themselves. The coaches care about the athletes, they will push you to the limit but the second your form starts to suck they will be yelling at you from across the gym and work with you to fix it. They have a very low tolerance for mistakes; n my 3+ years going to Crossfit Reality I have NEVER seen anyone (coaches and athletes) injured! Another thing I find refreshing about Crossfit Reality is that they stick to science!! No fancy shortcuts, no super secret diet where you can only eat a cube of cheese, just cold hard facts (I really appreciate this being that I have a major in Biochemistry). If you want to lose weight there is no short cut just be consistent and if you want some help doing it, the coaches at Crossfit Reality will set you on the right track. Lastly, Paul is awesome! Besides being an excellent coach, he has gone out of the way to help me out on a few occasions and guess what? Everything was great. We reached an agreement and when it came to an end everything went back to normal. As with anything make sure you honor your end of the deal, because Paul will honor his end. I LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! crossfit reality! This space allows for real movement and no need to share equipment during workouts! Classes vary in size between 3-12 athletes per session. The coaches show cohesion in technique work that allow for consistency in movement progression. The community is awesome! Every workout I've joined the energy is vibrant. We all work together to promote improvement and boost confidence levels on a daily basis. Overall, this box motivates growth, not only in physical conditioning but also to become mentally stronger! I've been going to CrossFit Reality for about 4 months so far. Every time I went for a class of the day I feel that I am consistently improving, whether it be my conditioning or technique; I especially look forward to the workouts that include Olympic lifts and gymnastic movements. The community has a variety of people of different backgrounds and experience, and all the instructors are very attentive and big on the motivation. I am a current CFR member, and have been happily a member for almost the last 2 years. I rarely post things on social media (including yelp), but felt compelled to contribute to the negative comments that were posted a few days ago by two former members. Full disclosure: I'm NOT a coach, I have NO financial interest in this business, and I'm expressing my opinions with my own free will. I have been doing Crossfit for almost 5 years now and this is my 3rd gym. I have only changed gyms because I have moved each time. EVERY gym has its pros and cons. EVERY gym has a different personality and different culture, depending on the owner and the coaches. EVERY gym has something unique to offer. As a member, I understand every gym has a contract because this is a business, and businesses need to make money in order to stay in business. But here's the funny part... I can't remember any gym putting a gun to my head 'forcing' me to sign their contract. I can't remember any gym not being 100% up front about what the contract entailed, what the terms were, and what my options were at any point in time. I can't remember any gym not specifically identifying what had to happen in order for me to get out of a contract early, in case that situation came up. Paul was no different. I signed up with each gym fully knowing my commitments. I did research before signing the contract. I looked at the worst case scenarios if I wanted to end my contract early. Bottom line... I made the decision on my own, and I accepted all responsibilities and consequences. To the former members complaining about the owner, maybe take a step back and look at the situation. Were you forced to sign with CFR? Did you get everything in writing you are claiming was said? Furthermore, I know a bunch of you came over from the gym that closed down, and now most of you are already gone. Maybe, just maybe, the gym wasn't the problem... ** UPDATE (8/8/16) - Since that last line has apparently upset quite a few people, let me clarify my remarks instead of taking it down. The comment was NOT meant to include everyone from the other gym. In fact, for the most part, I've met great people and have had good experiences with a lot of you. I've been a member of Crossfit Reality since November of 2015. I joined after my other gym closed doors in Long Beach, and I was welcomed to Crossfit Reality with open arms. Nice, big facility! Plenty of room to lift and do a WOD without getting someone else's sweat on you. Tons of rigs, ropes, GHDs, kettle bells, boxes and more torture devices.... All the equipment is clean and maintained. Morning classes are perfect size and great atmosphere for working out. The programming is on point. Hard, Intense lifting. Challenging, insane WODs. Good people that are encouraging and friendly! Legit, knowledgeable coaches that want you to excel! Paul runs an awesome gym and creates an atmosphere that promotes community, working hard and having a damn good time. Also- throughout the year there are nutrition challenges to get your eating on track. For me, the accountability of the challenges is crucial because I enjoy pizza and beer and doughnuts and ice cream and in n out and more pizza. The challenges make you buckle down and eat right. If you are new to crossfit and want an amazing gym to join, Crossfit Reality can make all your crossfit dreams come true. It's a great gym to learn the basics of crossfit and grow. It's a box where you'll get a text if you have skipped a couple too many classes, you'll be pushed to another level that you didn't think was possible and you'll definitely hit PRs. Everyone's go to excuse for poor fitness is "I have no time".. umm guess what ?! This amazing facility is virtually open 24 hours .. there is #noexcuse .. for a full time social worker and mom of a teen boy who trains year round in track and cross country this place is beyond perfect .. They have a 4AM class, need I say more ?!? I challenge to try to find another box within close proximity with this class time. The facility is fully equipped, amazingly organized, and our AM coach (Paul) is very skilled, knowledgeable, and encouraging. It was a bit intimidating to return to CrossFit after a 6 month hiatus but with the one on one attention and small class sizes, I feel beyond supported. I tried a few places before a friend of mine recommended Crossfit Reality. This was the third place I had tried so I was not expecting it to be different. In fact, I thought it would be like the other places where they gave you one day of training and threw you into the lion's den. When I talked to Paul about my concerns he assured me that I would not participate in the classes until I was ready. He emphasized that fact that you have to go through a (6) 1 hour session with one of the coaches one on one and only after the coach thought you were ready to be with the big boys would they let you go into the classes. Paul and the rest of the coaches are concerned with the athlete's health and safety and therefore they will take as much time as they can with you to make sure that you are not at risk of hurting yourself. I have been here since April and I have seen a big difference in my body already. I love everyone there, this is a family and they treat you as such. Thanks for making this experience a great one. I Absolutely love this gym...from the intense workouts, warm community, and of course dedication of the coaches it really gets no better for me. I am definitely not an athlete and honestly I'm 5'3 and overweight topping out at 187lb. With that said i was nervous to even entertain the thought of working out with all these ripped up and fit ppl lol but I knew that I needed something more than the 60min 24hr fitness aerobic classes to keep me motivated so I started doing some crossfit shopping around. I went on yelp and called the two boxes that populated in my search but it was hard to reach someone and once I did the owners came off very unhelpful. As my hubby took over the search he forwarded CFR info to me, and when I called, Paul (the co-owner) answered immediately. He scheduled me to come in to learn more about my fitness needs etc. Well the day before our meeting I had a financial mishap come up so I called to re-schedule. He said, "Noooooooo come in Im not the type of coach to worry about money I'll be able to help you out, jus come in. I thought that was VERY cool and so the next day I was in there. Fast forward he went above and beyond to work out payments, so that I could start CFR immediately and boy did I have the workout of my life...I threw up the 1st day and within a month lost 12lb. I'm now being coached by Dustin,or Adam and they freaking rock! I recently got a dx from my doctor telling me that I have osteoarthritis in my ankle and to stop doing extreme workouts...well I was totally bummed but after letting paul & Dustin know they have been super supportive in modifying my workouts and I'm still breaking a serious sweat without causing additional damage to my ankle. Ive met a lot of great ppl since joining and being new to the Long Beach area it has given me an easy way to make new friends. I started crossfit about a year and half ago after my coworkers could not shut up about it! I signed up at CFR as that was the box they went to and right after the first workout I understood why they were so into it! As the months when on I got stronger and I loved working out with the friends I made and seeing my results improve with the right coaches there to support you. A year into crossfit I decided to do my first competition and I am loving this lifestyle! I always ask the coaches for their input and they go above and beyond to help and advise you in anyway necessary. Paul has done an amazing job expanding the box and also adding other classes such as Ladies Class, Barbell Classes, and not to mention the crossfit classes are basically all day and night long! I have done my due diligence when researching CF Gyms, and after visiting several I am absolutely elated to find such a great CF Box. The staff has been nothing but supportive and encouraging. I've recently gained quite a bit of weight and was apprehensive in diving back into such intense workouts, but it has been awesome thus far. I have finally found a place that is positive, uplifting and whooping my tail into shape. All the members have been great as well, really looking forward to working out with everyone. On a side note, I do think it's important to add that the owner Paul is stellar guy. After a few weeks coming to the gym, I lost the 3 karat diamond out of my ring. He took an entire day looking for it, and after 8 hours of searching high and low he found it and returned it. I read a bad review about him, and I encourage people to come in and meet him for yourself. He's a stand up person. Just finished my 2 month intro membership and signed up for good. The gym has a huge facility and was impressed with all the equipment. There's classes starting at 4 am all the way to the evening, which is helpful for those of us with crazy schedules. This is my first venture into Crossfit and I've got to say that I haven't been disappointed. Thanks to the instruction I've received here I feel stronger and look better than I've ever been before. There are plenty of great things that I can say this place. First, the coaching staff is just amazing. They have the skill and the patience to teach anybody how to do the complex movements that are a part of most Crossfit workouts. These people know how to push you hard enough to better yourself but are not afraid to tell you to step it down if they feel you are pushing yourself into injury. Because of this, in the nine months that I've been coming here I haven't experienced any of the gnarly injuries that people associate with these types of programs. The programming they come up with is intense and always oriented toward some goal; whether that is building strength, or endurance, or reinforcing proper technique. Second, the facility is awesome. Drop by and you'll see just how big this box is--it's seriously the size of a small aircraft hangar. On top of that the equipment and the facility are well maintained. In fact you can often spot the gym's owner, Paul, personally making improvements to the box. Parking is also not a problem, even on the busiest days. Lastly, the people here are awesome. Everyone is pretty friendly and you can always expect help from your fellow members when you ask for it. Overall I would highly recommend this box to anyone, especially those who have never had any experience with Crossfit--this is a great place to start. read more

You all gotta know.. I am NOT your typical Cross-Fit devotee. I don't officially know what the box is (not THAT box), I barely know what WOD means and I've spent most of my life slogging out long runs on the beach and not going near the macho sections of the gym. So, when I found myself looking twice at an Amazon Local deal for Cross Fit Reality, I was a little surprised. That surprised grew to shock when I found myself booking my first one-on-one. I was looking for a way to get out of my comfort zone and step up my workout for a little thing called Mt Kilimanjaro that I'm hoping to tackle later in the year. I was SUPER INTIMIDATED by everything I read on the internet about Cross Fit in general. I had all kinds of preconceived notions of macho dudes in spandex grunting out their workout in small dark rooms while spouting acronyms and checking out each others' lats. CrossFit Reality was a supremely awesome surprise. To start, Coach Paul is seriously amazing. He took the time to walk through all the basics to ensure that the form and mechanics of each movement were perfect so that the individual can progress safely and without injury. He crazily identified an old ankle injury I had (but hadn't copped to on the forms) and was able to make one easy tweak to correct the bad body mechanics that followed ( okay, so I probably have some work to still do there but whatever!) The fact that he could diagnose that issue by watching one simple movement was pretty impressive... Everyone in that gym was down-to-earth and cool. Everyone was cooperative , friendly and competitive without being combative or condescending. They've cultivated a good vibe here (without any of the nonsense I've read in some of the reviews for this gym or other Cross Fit locations). The place was clean, friendly, professional and easy to schedule- truly a class act without a downside. I don't know if I'll be a lifetime cross fit devotee yet, but if I were to dive on in, it would have to be with this group. There's a lot of Cross Fit start-ups out there, but these guys have got it right. read more

I highly recommend checking out Crossfit Reality. I joined a year ago and can honestly say this place is awesome! Coach Paul is great and his coaching has encouraged me to overcome some of my fears with weights. I am more consistent with my workouts and way stronger (back squatting 260 lbs!). One of the best CrossFit gyms out there! Had the pleasure of training here for 3 years until I moved out of the Long Beach area, and they have only improved and expanded. If your a barbell freak/lifter, they have a whole warehouse dedicated for you. If you like grinding out your workouts everyday, they have a separate CrossFit set up warehouse right next door! One of the largest Crossfit spaces in so cal, great coaches and all the motivation you need to meet your goals. My advice to anyone reading this is that you should always keep the lines of communication open between you, your coach, and/or the owner Paul. 1. READ the contract prior to signing it. Once you accept and sign the contract take a photo and keep it for your records. 2. If you dislike the auto renewal, give advanced notice to Paul nearing the end of your contract and let him know you are not planning to renew. Then find your happiness elsewhere. 3. If you are moving and need to cancel your membership, the fee is $100.00 if your move is 25 miles+ away. Show proof of said move, pay the fee, and all the best to you finding a new box near your new (hopefully rad) space. 4. If you have any issues whatsoever, address them! I have always addressed my issues or concerns to Paul. He is my main coach so the ability to discuss difficult matters with him was never an issue from the start. He listens, problem solves, and/or does his best to make things better or right. 5. If you have any suggestions that will make the box better, suggest them! You'd be surprised at what Paul might say yes to. If you never suggest or ask you'll never know his answer! 6. If you feel this box doesn't suit your wants, needs or goals, don't sign up! You are not obligated to. No one's twisting your arms. There are plenty of other local boxes or global gyms you can choose from. Find one that fits your needs. 7. If you dig the box and it's offerings, definitely check us out! We'd love to have you. Drop in for a free class. Feel out the space and the members. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! With that being said, here are the pros and cons from my perspective: PROS - THAT ORANGE FAN - HUGE clean, organized, and well-maintained space - ALL THE TOYS! 'bells, 'bags, 'balls, sleds, stones, tires, rowers, ropes, assault bikes, reverse hyper's, ghd's, mobility tools, crossover symmetry's, vests, etc. - NEWEST additions to the box: assault air runners, skierg's, yolk, strongman sandbags, d-ball med balls, and RX ropes in various sizes - ROMWOD available for members to use at the box - fridge filled with items for purchase for your convenience: water, coconut water, coffee, and bars - cold towels available during the summer - Coach Paul has been in this industry for years. He is personable and super knowledgeable in all areas so if you'd like to pick his brain on any topic, he's your man. He's also always right and I hate that. haha Thanks for putting up with my shit for the last 3+ years! - Coach Jason is rad and knowledgeable and gives me great tips whenever I run into him. This was my first time doing CrossFit and I absolutely LOVED IT! I attended the 0530 session and it was for sure an intense workout for me having no experience. This place is great. Started about a week ago with my boyfriend with not very much experience. We both started the same day and the first day kicked my a**. I almost didn't want to go back. But I sucked it up and since then, it has been one of my best decisions. Each person I have worked out with has been awesome and my confidence has gone up bit by bit as well as my boyfriends. This past summer I moved to Long Beach for a few months for work. I did not know a single person in the area, but CFR made Long Beach feel like home. When I first walked into the gym I was greeted by dozens of friendly people and a kick ass workout. I have been to many CrossFit gyms before, and CFR has some of the best programming and equipment in the sport. The programming is challenging and diverse (beach workouts on the weekends). Paul, the owner, is a great guy and welcomes any and all to come share the experience. read more
