I've met self identified Christians, Buddhists, Sufis, Atheists, and Pagans here to name just a few! I appreciate that the parish interviews, votes, and offers the choice of employment to a pastor rather than being assigned one from some higher authority. As a result, each UU church I've been to round the country has its own personality. Dr. Alex Reigel serves here. He is a well accredited on paper, and thoroughly accredited in life experience through his spiritual exploration. Grateful that he shares the snippets of wisdom he has garnered with the parish. This church houses the local PFLAG chapter, has an active choir (one for adults and one for kids), a huge religious education program, retreats, classes, and book clubs for adults, dinner benefits, a thrift shop... A LOT. Many of the members are active in groups outside of church, such as the NAACP. Worth swinging by if seeking a little enlightenment and fellowship on a Sunday at 10:30 am! They have great fish fry's every Friday during Lent and you cannot forget about their annual Pierogi Festival! If you are looking for some really good authentic pierogi's definitely come to Sweetest Heart of Mary! The marker is in front of the church and has the same text on both sides. It reads, "This Neo-Gothic church was dedicated on May 15, 1927, Detroit architect W. E. N. Hunter designed the limestone structure, which contains stained-glass windows by the Willet Studios of Philadelphia, Pewabic tile from Detroit and wood carvings by German carver Alois Lang. The tower houses a forty-seven-bell carillon. In 1962 the education wing was erected. The church was dedicated to the founders, who organized the nondenominational Grosse Pointe Protestant Evangelical Church on September 7, 1865. In 1867 the first church was erected at Kerby Road and Lake Shore Drive. A stone and wood-frame building, referred to as the "ivy-covered church," was built on this site in 1894. In 1920 the congregation reorganized as a Presbyterian church." It mentions that it was erected in 1991 by the Bureau of History. There is street parking and of course the church parking lot. This church is home for me. This is the church I grew up at since, even before kindergarten and…read moreuntil moving away during college. This is the catholic church I compare all churches to everywhere in the world. I went through catechism here and grew up with the same priest pretty much all my life. The deacon has always been the same as well. Father Tim Pelk has been a steadfast figure in this church. I have never been able to find a church that felt more at home and comfortable and warm as this church to me. I've never come across a better priest and father Tim Pelk either. I was baptized here, had my reconciliation, confirmation and was married here. This is to me what a catholic church should look like and be like. That should be the blueprint for other churches. Unfortunately this church is a half hour away from me now and it's too hard to get to every Sunday. I still do make it here every once in a while for the holidays.
