The desserts are also generally better, too. The food is generally pretty average depending on the day of the week, but the vegetables are especially bad. 50% off for a day of staff appreciation week so I couldn't stay away! Let me start out with the fact that this is college dining hall food so people shouldn't have unrealistic expectations. I found it enjoyable for the most part and the staff are wonderful here. The hard part when it comes to trying to make good food and serve thousands of students boils down to staff and they just don't have the numbers (not their fault either). Today they served poke bowls (smoked salmon, tuna cubes, imitation crab, rice, and sauces) and pho (which they've attempted in the past. This was a major improvement). Tasty and I got to eat my fill since it's buffet style. Always a huge rush hour at noon and then the lines go away. Would probably go again if my friend is paying. A lot of fond memories when they had Late Night where you could go from like 10pm-2am and order a-La-carte fast food like chocolate chip pancakes, wings, fries and more with your flex dollars. Croads straight up gets too much hate After a year, finally made a return trip to Croads thanks to freshmen friendos :) Croads is essential to the tacky college experience. It's definitely not going to be a 5-star Michelin experience, but it hold you down for the year. There's bearfit which has healthy options, a salad bar with basic items (tofu, leaves, basic salad dressings), a dessert bar (basic cookies/lemon bars), and usually at least 2 entree options (one that's veggie friendly/one meat one). I'd say you make the biggest bang for your buck at lunch/dinner tbh. Personally I really liked breakfast tho because they sometimes had egg mcmuffins and bread putting I'd definitely say come here for the mems but not necessarily for the food Protip - you dont need to use meal swipes at croads anymore! Half the stuff I ate is somewhat concerning, but it's a dining hall, so I mean they tried? By the way, during the summer, breakfast ends at 8:30 so wake up early and get your meal. Pros: - There is usually always a fish option and although there isn't always much flavor, it is a healthier protein option than red meat. - Sometimes they have watermelon but you need to fight for it. - Not a lot of choices during the summer so you won't gain weight. - Potatoes of all kinds. 2 years and an entire pandemic, and this place still makes food that tastes like Purina One dog food. Good thing I had a bottle of antacid tablets and probiotics in my backpack to help digest the utter pile of sewage my poor rectum has to deal with tonight. The salad has lettuce that looks rotten. Despite cafeteria food having a reputation for being unpalatable, Crossroads is pretty good. There's quite a lot of variety, and I'm fond of the omelette and egg bar that they have for breakfast. However, my biggest complaint is that they should, stop advertising items on the online menu that don't happen to be in the dining hall that day. One morning, I went for the sausage links, only to be told there were no sausage links, only sausage patties. One afternoon, I went for blueberry pie, only to see that the only pies available were apple pies. I even asked the lady cutting pie if there was blueberry, because that was what the online menu listed, and she said there was no blueberry pie. That upset me, especially since I had been looking forward to it for lunch. They have also increased their prices by $0.50 per meal. It was $9.00 for breakfast last year, $9.50 for breakfast now. $10.00 for lunch last year, $10.50 now. I know that sounds like a small increase, but for a college student, it adds up. As far as dining halls go, Crossroads is actually one of the better ones. This week we had $5 lunch for staff appreciation week. I went with my colleagues and we had the tilapia, gumbo, hot dogs, spicy waffle fries, and Neapolitan cake with a rolled wafer. The food was good with the spicy waffle fries being the highlight at our table. If you want a variety of food, coming to the dining halls is a good choice. Hey, this is a dining hall. Don't expect too much because this place exists to sustain your dietary needs. (At least enough so you don't get hungry). I came here in the morning before 10am for breakfast and they did not have many options. It was 6 meal points ($6) before 10am according to my sister and for lunch, it is 7 meal points. For dinner, it is 8 meal points. Breakfast here was apparently one of the better dining halls around campus? This is literally like a very limited buffet so I got scrambled eggs with turkey linked sausage and tater tots. Let me tell you, the tater tots are a GEM! It was crispy and yummy and even my sister says its one of the best things they offer here. The scrambled eggs aren't bad but I think I can make better scrambled eggs at home! The turkey sausage... please skip it. You'll think me later. The orange juice here is just weird... it tastes like infused cough medicine with orange juice. I went in today and was totally disappointed in how many of the clothes for sale were dirty or stained and over priced. I saw things that I recently saw at target and they were the same price.When you go to sell clothes it's odd how they are so picky but then have so much unattractive and expensive items that aren't nearly as nice as many of the items your trying to sell them. For a campus cafeteria, this place is decent. Just that. The variety of food that they offer is pretty good but that statement is only valid for about the first hour of food service. Because the place is open for 4.5 hours for dinner, after the first hour, all the food that you see on the menu online is no longer availabe. The only things that you can count on being here is pizza, salad, and soup. A lot of the food that you find here is pretty unhealthy... You can go online to check the facts but it's not hard to notice when you're eating it. TONS of the food that they have here is deep fried, like fried fish, fried chicken, french fries, fried falafal balls, etc. The food here is always either underseasoned or overseasoned and neither is ever good. I'm not a vegetarian, but I know that their vegetarian options are very limited and what they do offer is disgusting. It's always some sort of vegetable stew or something similar that looks like it was thrown together in about two seconds (literally. chef opens bag of veggies. boils in water. takes out. pours on some kind of sauce. puts it under the heat lamp). The frozen yogurt that they have here, I'll give a pass. It's there, but being from a mix, it's often too sweet and there's nothing you can really do about it. The desserts that are served usually sit around for wayyy too long so I can't really guess how they taste out of the oven since I always get something that's stale and dry. For those that don't have a meal plan, the pricing is pretty bad. If you want a lot of food, I would recommend going to Kip's during happy hour and grabbing three dishes instead of visiting Crossroads. The utensils that they have here are the nasties. I know it sounds crazy and your friends might laugh at you but bring your own utensils. Seriously. If you use a cup there, make sure you wash it out a few times with the beverage you're about to drink. A few times, I looked at the cups that came out of the dish room and you could clearly see that there were soap suds on them... Nasty.... Go somewhere else for a better meal. read more

This review is not without qualification: I write this with the sort of expectation that I think is objective given that Crossroads is a university cafeteria. Essentially: it's a huge study lounge buffet cafeteria, as I see it. In more detail: PROS: - Not every cafeteria has a wide selection of entrees. Crossroads has the following: - cereal bar, bakery and dessert bar, world cuisine (where they feature foods from different countries on a rotation), Asian fusion bar, Mexican, pizza and pasta section, made-to-order deli, vegetarian/vegan bar, soups and salad bar, etc. - They feature organic produce, outsource from local farmers (and they proudly advocate for them) - Crossroad late nights! I love crossroad late nights especially when nothing else but poutine's is open at midnight--Crossroads happily offer healthy food on a platter! - It's a buffet style cafeteria, so you can take your books/laptop and sit by while eating for as long as you want (provided its within their operation hours, of course) - You can eat in the cafeteria OR you can bring your food to go. How flexible! - They play upbeat music - The building is such that nice rich amount of natural light flows inside. It's very relaxing - You can mix and match your selection of food--be creative! - The fact that students eat A LOT when they come here kind of suggests that the food is more than decent, and it is! CONS: - As with every buffet, it becomes a problem when people don't control their portions. But that's a personal problem and not with the crossroads cafeteria. - Again, as a buffet, the noise level is pretty loud, but as a college infested place (lol) that is a pretty average level of noise. - There's no waiter service. LOL. Don't be too much, adjust your expectations - The ketchup pump located in the condiments area tends to run out quick. - Saturdays aren't that exciting because it's like breakfast (brunch) all day, and unless you're a breakfast person, that feels kind of monotonous and it really calls for creativity to mix and match foods! - You have to put your own used dishes in the dish room (but that's not really a problem) As a university cafeteria, I think Crossroads is very efficient and sustainable. Cal dining really needs to do better. Their food is found to have mold, sometimes cardboard in their food and they don't ensure that it is safe to eat most of the time. Other than eating here regularly when I was a freshman, we cross paths only during the summers (of love?) because I get to eat here for free (yay for working for the school). I won't say Crossroads is terribad because it's not too bad when you can get creative with the dishes. What I will say though is that any one station's combination of protein, vegetable, and carb is a bad choice. Everything is underseasoned as well so add some salt +pepper. As a cook, I've just taken all the possible ingredients there to make my own dishes instead of eating their standalone things. Here's some examples I've experimented with based on what they've had. I'll go from simple (few stations) to fancy (alot of stations): Breakfast Tacos: eggs from blue plate, soft taco shells from vegetarian entree, red onions from salad bar/bagels, tapatio/tabasco from the tables, breaking up sausage/ham/something optional Chicken Pasta with Spinach: break up grilled chicken from grill station, pasta + cream sauce from pasta station, add spinach from salad station, mix together Pork Loin Sandwich - pork loin from blue plate station, 2 slices of toasted sourdough from the salad bar, spring mix from the salad bar, chipotle mayo from the deli, tomatoes+red onion from the grill station Greek Chicken Wrap - shred a grilled chicken breast from grill station, greek salad from the salad bar, hummus from the deli, "naan" (it's just pita) from the Indian station You, too, can turn shit into gold. Ah, the infamous Crossroads... This place definitely places quantity over quality. The main meal stations are a hit or miss (usually a miss for me). The food is not too well-flavored, and more often than not, tastes just like generic cafeteria food. During peak hours, the lines get incredibly long for these stations, too. Fortunately, the menu goes online at the beginning of each day (at midnight) for what they will be serving for breakfast, lunch, and dinner -- so you can review what they're serving before you go! When I'm uninterested in any of the food in the main stations, I usually turn to the pizza (about the same quality of Little Caesar's) or the burger station to satisfy my cravings for savory foods. The salad and fruit bars are by far the best sections here. The salad bar has everything you'd want, from baby tomatoes to celery sticks to tofu to couscous -- and the ingredients are fresh! The fruit bar contains all kinds of fruit (oranges, grapefruits, apples, strawberries, cantaloupe, honeydew, plums, etc.) and they're almost always fresh and juicy. In fact, the main reason I come here is for the nutritional value of the salad and fruit... As a college student, you don't usually get the chance to eat these every day. Since campus dining is very vegetarian and vegan friendly, Crossroads loves serving vegan desserts -- but I can definitely tell the difference in the quality of taste. All the other desserts typically taste pretty average, similar to Safeway baked goods. The frozen yogurt dispenser isn't too bad, though, and they have a few atypical flavors that are sometimes fun to try. The atmosphere is nice and spacious, with high ceilings and huge windows (lots of light!). The workers themselves do their job well, but their attitudes are often curt and not too friendly. **FOR LATE NIGHT A LA CARTE**: If this place served only late-night, I would give them an extra star. It's open 10pm-2am Wednesday-Sunday. If you brave the drunk post-party line at 1am on Friday and Saturday nights, Crossroads offers many fried foods that are great for the late-night munchies. The pricing isn't great, but you won't find many places that serve such a great variety of food until 2am. Crossroads is a great eatery for groups of students (namely freshmen) with mealpoints. When you use cash ($2 more expensive), it's not quite as worthwhile. If you eat a LOT and really enjoy salad/fruit, you might look into trying this place out. Clark Kerr dining hall might serve slightly better food but the walk up there is not worth it, neither is the one at Foothill. Honestly, Crossroads offers a huge variety of food. The salad bar is located on the first level, near the cereal station. Crossroads usually has two choices for the soup. Most of the time it will be black bean soup, chicken tortilla. Sometimes they might offer clam chowder but very rarely. The salad bar is comprehensive: lettuce, spinach, and mixed greens. Additions include: corn, cherry tomatoes, broccoli, peas, sunflower seeds, quinoa, tofu, cheese, edamame, etc. Pre-mixed Greek salad with baby tomatoes, feta cheese, and balsamic vinaigrette dressing is offered occasionally. The half-level up contains all of the main courses. There is a section for hamburger/hot dog and French fries (cuts varied almost every day), random section, vegetarian section, pasta bar, and sandwich bar. During the regular academic year, the Asian station at the lower level to the right of the dining hall is open. In the summers, it is closed. Finally, next to the cashier is a pizza bar. The pizzas are actually quite good and can be addicting. Flavors are rotate 4 at a time between pepperoni, cheese, sausage, combination, Hawaiian, and BBQ chicken. Because this is Berkeley, know that all of their dining halls are moving towards zero-waste! Only get what you know you can eat. If it's not sufficient, you can always come back for more. Best times to go: brunches are the best but lunches can be good, too. read more

Crossroads is hands down my favorite DC. I like the feel of the building and the layout of the food stations. There's lots of light and space. Whenever I walk in, I feel good right away. At every meal, there's tremendous variety. There's an Asian food counter, a pizza bar, a Mexican food counter, the Blue Plate Special line; fries; frozen yogurt; salad. I can always find something that I'm willing to eat and usually find something that I'm happy to eat. Excellent diet coke! Lots of organic and vegetarian choices. Vegetables that are not necessarily overcooked. As one of my French friends used to say, the food here won't give you pimples. When I was in College, each meal by itself was more or less OK. What was bad about dorm food was the lack of variety. Things have really changed since my time. The options seem endless. The Berkeley campus makes a considerable effort to bring in local produce, and I think that they're doing very well at it. read more

I had meal points when I was a freshmen (2014-2015) and thought that the food was fine/above average for the most part. Every year, it has gotten better with better quality food and more variety. There are some strange dishes, but you are bound to find options that you enjoy or at least are okay with eating. I am a huge fan of the unhealthier foods, especially chicken strips, fries, and the create your own tostadas and nachos.
