    22. Pad See Ew Chicken Noodle

I have been looking for the best pad see ew and it is here! Rice noodles are cooked perfectly with generous amount of chicken, and sweet egg. The place is no fuss and filled with college students. In Berkeley Asian ghetto with nostalgic college vibes.

I tried out Thai Basil Cuisine on a whim since i was craving Thai food. The restaurant was hidden away a bit in a mini Plaza off the main street. I ordered the Pad Kee Mao with chicken. I found that the chicken was kinda dry, and found that the flavor of the noodles was a bit lacking, and left a bit of a burnt aftertaste as well. Overall, I was a bit dissapointed in the Pad Kee Mao.

Best of Berkeley for many years

Every time I'm in town, I always stop by here and get my Thai fix. I recently vacationed in Thailand and had some Rad Na in Bangkok. So I had been searching for an authentic Rad Na ever since and finally found it at Thai Basil. The Rad Na here is SO GOOD! very flavorful gravy with just the right amount of burnt taste on the rice noodles. Ahhh.. I'm hungry just thinking about it.

My go-to while I was in college for both value and quality! The staff is very straightforward but that's exactly what thrives in busy areas like south Berkeley. Cash payment is preferred but you can pay with card at the kiosks. Food comes out quick and is perfect for a late night dinner or in between class lunch with friends. Tons of drink options in this plaza as well so Thai Basil pairs great with your favorite boba shop!

Not the greatest pad see ew ever, but was still pretty good. Noodles were cooked well and were just the right amount of sweet. Unfortunately the chicken was not very flavorful, and was pretty rubbery too. Broccoli was also disappointing, and felt under cooked and was hard to bite into. Chicken and broccoli brought it down, especially given the price point.

I got the pad see ew, and it was good, though chicken was a bit overcooked. My low rating is because they only offer plastic containers, even if you eat in. I explicitly asked for no plastic because we planned to eat in, and the lady said yes and then gave us plastic containers in plastic bags with plastic forks and disposable chopsticks. Furthermore, they won't let you dispose of the containers in the restaurant (see image) and have a sign, virtue signaling, that they would like to save the environment and that customers should not order containers if eating in. It's a lie! Disappointing, not at all environmentally conscious and generating tons of waste. Food was decent but not worth wasting so much plastic when there are plenty of other good/better thai food options in Berkeley that let you use plates.

Basil chili chicken with fried egg

Thai Basil in Berkeley offers a convenient option for a quick Thai food fix. I tried their Basil Chili Chicken with fried egg, which was a decent portion size. The chicken itself was cooked well, but the overall flavor lacked the punch I was hoping for. The ambiance of the restaurant is pretty basic, with simple décor and generic Asian-style furniture. It's clean and comfortable enough for a casual meal, but the inside space may feel very crowded when you have a few occupied tables. There is open seating outside the restaurant, which is shared by all the other restaurants in that section, so it's available on a first come, first served basis. The service was fast but the staff could have been friendlier. When my friends and I asked for to-go boxes and utensils/napkins, we got an angry look from the staff. Please also note that the restaurant doesn't have a bathroom for its customers, so you'll have to find some place else if you really need to go. Overall, Thai Basil is an average option. The food is decent, but a little pricey for what you get. If you're in the area and looking for a quick bite, it's not a bad choice, but there are probably better Thai restaurants in Berkeley worth exploring.

Got the chicken fried rice was really flavorful!! Seasoned just right and the portion size was really big! You order on the kiosk when you enter so it's pretty fast. Didn't have to wait that long and inside is really nice and cozy while you wait. Definitely would eat here again!

This has been one of my all time favorite Thai places since college days. I love the online ordering capabilities for a quick pick up. Pla Rad Pik the fried fish dish has the most awesome garlic Basil sauce. Don't miss out. The classic pad Thai and pad see ew are always good.

My go-to spot whenever I'm in town. Staff is always friendly and non rushy when getting your food. This time, I didn't get the curry like normal. Kept it simple with veggie egg rolls since I was craving fried food. Restutant is packed with tables and chairs. However, the space works. Let me not forget I like the kiosk machine less pressure or maybe more on what to get. This place is a must try, aI know for sure I'll be back 10+ years.

Street parking which wasn't hard to find is about $4 per hour. I was able to park literally right in front of the restaurant. Came on a Thursday around 2pm. We ordered: 1. Large Nakutama (cold): I've had this dish before a bunch of times and today the broth or meat had an odd taste to it. It almost tasted gamey like they meat was old or something. About 40 mins later I had a pretty bad stomach ache and had to use the restroom. Not sure if it was a coincidence or what. My wife had a small amount and agreed that there was an odd taste but she didn't have any stomach issues after eating it (but she also only had a small bite). 2. Large Shrimp BK: This was alright. The noodles were significantly overcooked and bloated. Not sure how that happened since they looked like they were freshly making it. The shrimp tempura was good though. 3. Tempura Pumpkin, potato Croque, Sweet potato and Crab: Honestly the tempura was the best item on the menu. I really liked the Pumpkin and imitation crab while my wife liked the sweet potato the most. Overall food quality probably 2/5 stars. The only saving grace for this location was the guy running the register who was awesome and super nice and funny. He was running around the restaurant helping out making the dishes and running the register. 5 stars for service. Location is also really nice and clean. Just very disappointed with the food quality.
