Ambiance is basically a dinning hall experience, not much a restaurant. Food was prepared quickly, and it was self served to pick up from the counter. Panang curry was not creamy and lacked the signature coconut flavor.

I have been looking for the best pad see ew and it is here! Rice noodles are cooked perfectly with generous amount of chicken, and sweet egg. The place is no fuss and filled with college students. In Berkeley Asian ghetto with nostalgic college vibes.

I will not exaggerate here at all; The absolute BEST Thai food I've ever had and it's not close. The Pad-See-Yu with no bean sprouts is genuinely unforgettable. Such a sweet lady working at the front, amazing quick service, incredible food. Trust me get the Pad-See-Yu it is otherworldly, I've had other dishes and they are just as great.

I tried out Thai Basil Cuisine on a whim since i was craving Thai food. The restaurant was hidden away a bit in a mini Plaza off the main street. I ordered the Pad Kee Mao with chicken. I found that the chicken was kinda dry, and found that the flavor of the noodles was a bit lacking, and left a bit of a burnt aftertaste as well. Overall, I was a bit dissapointed in the Pad Kee Mao.

Best of Berkeley for many years

Every time I'm in town, I always stop by here and get my Thai fix. I recently vacationed in Thailand and had some Rad Na in Bangkok. So I had been searching for an authentic Rad Na ever since and finally found it at Thai Basil. The Rad Na here is SO GOOD! very flavorful gravy with just the right amount of burnt taste on the rice noodles. Ahhh.. I'm hungry just thinking about it.

My go-to while I was in college for both value and quality! The staff is very straightforward but that's exactly what thrives in busy areas like south Berkeley. Cash payment is preferred but you can pay with card at the kiosks. Food comes out quick and is perfect for a late night dinner or in between class lunch with friends. Tons of drink options in this plaza as well so Thai Basil pairs great with your favorite boba shop!

    22. Pad See Ew Chicken Noodle
    Aashrith B.

Not the greatest pad see ew ever, but was still pretty good. Noodles were cooked well and were just the right amount of sweet. Unfortunately the chicken was not very flavorful, and was pretty rubbery too. Broccoli was also disappointing, and felt under cooked and was hard to bite into. Chicken and broccoli brought it down, especially given the price point.

I got the pad see ew, and it was good, though chicken was a bit overcooked. My low rating is because they only offer plastic containers, even if you eat in. I explicitly asked for no plastic because we planned to eat in, and the lady said yes and then gave us plastic containers in plastic bags with plastic forks and disposable chopsticks. Furthermore, they won't let you dispose of the containers in the restaurant (see image) and have a sign, virtue signaling, that they would like to save the environment and that customers should not order containers if eating in. It's a lie! Disappointing, not at all environmentally conscious and generating tons of waste. Food was decent but not worth wasting so much plastic when there are plenty of other good/better thai food options in Berkeley that let you use plates.

Basil chili chicken with fried egg

Thai Basil in Berkeley offers a convenient option for a quick Thai food fix. I tried their Basil Chili Chicken with fried egg, which was a decent portion size. The chicken itself was cooked well, but the overall flavor lacked the punch I was hoping for. The ambiance of the restaurant is pretty basic, with simple décor and generic Asian-style furniture. It's clean and comfortable enough for a casual meal, but the inside space may feel very crowded when you have a few occupied tables. There is open seating outside the restaurant, which is shared by all the other restaurants in that section, so it's available on a first come, first served basis. The service was fast but the staff could have been friendlier. When my friends and I asked for to-go boxes and utensils/napkins, we got an angry look from the staff. Please also note that the restaurant doesn't have a bathroom for its customers, so you'll have to find some place else if you really need to go. Overall, Thai Basil is an average option. The food is decent, but a little pricey for what you get. If you're in the area and looking for a quick bite, it's not a bad choice, but there are probably better Thai restaurants in Berkeley worth exploring.

This has been one of my all time favorite Thai places since college days. I love the online ordering capabilities for a quick pick up. Pla Rad Pik the fried fish dish has the most awesome garlic Basil sauce. Don't miss out. The classic pad Thai and pad see ew are always good.

Got the chicken fried rice was really flavorful!! Seasoned just right and the portion size was really big! You order on the kiosk when you enter so it's pretty fast. Didn't have to wait that long and inside is really nice and cozy while you wait. Definitely would eat here again!

Growing up in Wisconsin in a small city at the tip of Lake Superior Chinese restaurants were just about the only ethnic food available throughout the country. Exotic as they may seem to have been and widespread Nationally which is partly due to the Chinese building the railroads cross country. Chicago Cafe (Woodland, CA): Founded in 1903, academic research suggests this spot near Sacramento is the oldest continuously operating Chinese restaurant in the U.S. and California. These days I prefer Vietnamese or Thai all day long because the flavors are better and more variety and cleaner with respect to how the dishes are prepared. Well, I stumbled into this spot today and I was rather blown away. Large portions, low prices, excellent variety and top notch service. And a huge portion for only $13.95. I had the vegetable rice, complementary hot sauce and a nice iced cold five dollar Heineken. OK, this is a spot to put on your list. See you there!!! And now here are some interesting factoids: While thousands of Chinese immigrants first came to the U.S. to build the transcontinental railroad in the 1800s, it was the subsequent decades of legal discrimination that forced a marginalized community to turn the restaurant industry into their primary means of survival and citizenship. The "Lo Mein Loophole": In the early 20th century, U.S. courts recognized restaurant ownership as a pathway to obtain merchant visas. This loophole sparked a massive boom in the creation of Chinese restaurants, particularly luxury "chop suey palaces".

Rezzies are accepted (via phone). M E N U Viet Cuisine with some elevated, modern twists (no specific regional specialty). I appreciate their twist (tangerine sauce instead of nước chấm) but it was too one note for me...IMO, it needed acid and herbs. Plus, I miss the texture of peanuts. * Bánh Khọt: Viet Mini Pancakes w/ shrimp, coconut milk batter, herbs, pickles ($24): https://tinyurl.com/34nx7sat - Served at dinner only Fav dish of the night, the savory bánh khọt was delicately crispy and slightly custardy in the center with a snappy shrimp drizzled with fragrant scallion oil. It came with romaine, mint, and perilla leaves neatly layered for easy wrapping. The lettuce was a bit soft and soggy tho, and I think they forgot the pickled veggies. Served with a tiny portion of tangy sweet nước chấm. * Bò Lúc Lắc: Shaking Beef w/ soy, garlic, onion, cherry tomato, arugula ($26): https://tinyurl.com/3rkpukct Meltingly tender cubes of filet mignon but light on the seasoning and aromatics so it was bland. Also, was hoping for more smoky wok hei flavor. * Thịt Kho Tàu: Braised Pork Belly w/ hard boiled eggs, rice ($21): https://tinyurl.com/mr2evryw - Includes bowl of rice A traditional dish served during Lunar New Year, it symbolizes prosperity, warmth, and stability. Chunks of pork belly are caramelized in sugar and braised in coconut soda and fish sauce - rich, savory with a good ratio of lean meat to fat (4 pieces). Wish they used more braising liquid when warming up, as some pieces were a bit dry. S E R V I C E Warm, friendly hospitality. Food does take awhile tho...our first dish took about 30 minutes to arrive. A M B I A N C E Casual, no-frills indoor area with about 10-12 tables. The rib was definitely the most impressive part of the dish. Not only was it huge and very Instagrammable, but it was also extremely tender--kind of like braised oxtail, but served in a cleaner, lighter broth. The daikon balanced out the richness of the meat really well, and overall, I'd say this was a very satisfying meal. The beef and tomato lo mein, on the other hand, was probably closer to a 2.5/5. The dish leaned heavily on the tomato flavor, only had a few pieces of meat, and definitely needed additional seasoning, such as soy sauce, white pepper, or something to bring more depth. One thing that could be improved is the ordering experience. Their tablet system felt a bit cheap, and it was difficult to clearly see what each dish looked like on the screen. Providing a printed menu alongside the tablet would be really helpful.

I was violently craving seolleongtang and did some research to find a spot in Oakland. The menu is pretty big with a lot of enticing options--I love bossam and blood sausage--but because I had tunnel vision, I stuck with the soup. The broth itself was good, and they had salt and pepper on the table so you could season it to your liking. Unfortunately, the noodles were way too soft and almost mushy, and the meat was extremely tough and hard to chew. I couldn't finish it. If seolleongtang is one of your favorite dishes, I'd probably skip it here. My husband got the kimchi fried rice, which was huge and great for sharing between 2-4 people. Based on the portion size, I do think it could use an extra egg, more Spam and some nori on top. The vibe and service were solid, so I'd come back to try other dishes and update my rating accordingly.
