This restaurant offers a pleasant environment, great meal selections, and great service. The Early Bird specials are reasonably priced, and the soup/salad bar is appealing. It is the reason you will find many seniors dining there. This is where the positives end! The problem is excessive use of "SALT", everything is very over salted. Ironic; because the last thing we seniors need is excessive salt in our diet. Daily specials are posted at the door upon entering as is the incredible mouthwatering dessert cases. The menu is extensive and portions are generous and reasonably priced. The service is consistently prompt and pleasant, ensuring that drinks are replenished. I enjoy being a frequent patron as it is an excellent place to chat over a meal. It's a really good value, if you order right. My husband ordered Chicken Parmigiana, and right away I saw burnt edges. I ordered fried chicken, Lol I tried to cut into the thigh first and it was like Fort Nox! It sort of reminded me of the scene from National Lampoons Christmas movie where they cut into the Turkey and it totally collapsed. My fried chicken thigh was like that. I ate chicken jerky mostly. Gabe been taking my family here for over 20 years...since it was Arner's. This morning i had the absolute worst brrakfast I've ever experienced in any diner, in any part of the country, ever. the omelette was cooked to the point where all moisture had been cooked out of it to the point that the ( crap ) thin sliced linked sausage ( cheap ) was also dried out. It tasted like shoe leather. our waitress did not offer to take it back to have it redone, instead she explained to me how I had ordered it incorrectl ( I guess I should have ordered an omelette and not the dried out egg jerky that I had apparently ordered by mistake ). So, sad to say, but that will be the last time I take my family to this "once" best spot for affordable, really good food, here in the area. It'a really a shame. read more

Ate here again on Sunday. This place is better than diner food, with a full bar. We have eaten here for breakfast and lunch. Their menu selection is okay. During the holidays they have a smaller menu, but there is something for everyone. There roast turkey is very good and is real roasted turkey. They also have a nice salad bar, with a choice of breads and two soups. They have a nice desert selection, which is where you pay your bill. Even when they are crowded, it only takes about ten minutes to be seated. Service is very good and the servers are always pleasant. There are a lot of booths and some chair seating. Came here for lunch with my family today and while they have a limited menu selection, the salad bar was open and food was good. When you get an entree that comes with 1 side and the salad bar they give you gloves to wear to scoop from the salad bar. You must wear your mask and gloves. There are workers around monitoring that you do this too (I've been to places where they aren't that observant). 5/5 recommend this family restaurant! read more

This will be an easy review. Service is hit or miss here depending on who you're dealing with at the time. No one is terrible in my experience but there are a few stellar servers that we like very much. We try to sit in their sections. Food is good. Nothing special but consistent. One thing to note: STAY AWAY FROM THE DESSERTS IN THE CASE AT THE REGISTER. There's no telling how long those pastries have been there. I bought my wife a chocolate lava cupcake a week or two ago. She only ate the lava part of the cake. The rest was dry to the point of being inedible. She said "it just crumbled". Thinking that she was just being overly dramatic, I had a go at the cupcake. Do you know how you can feel when there's no moisture in your pastry when you touch it? Just light with no density. I rubbed a piece of the cupcake in between my fingers and it literally crumbled like I had sand between my fingers. Don't let the lovely presentation of the desserts in the case fool you! I come here for the early bird or a nightly special, once a week. The portion size is about below average sized and when added to the salad bar with very small shrimp, it becomes an average sized meal. Service is usually good depending on what section you are seated at. Desserts are above average sized and are well worth the cost and calories. read more

This used to be a good restaurant, but I had breakfast with my wife here this morning and the food had no taste, except for the cheese omelette my wife ordered that had pieces of green pepper in it thanks to an inattentive cook. The green pepper overwhelmed the eggs and my wife couldn't finish her breakfast. We told the waitress and she really didn't seem to care, and made no effort to make it right. The hostess/cashier didn't even ask us how our meal was. She seemed to busy gossiping with her colleagues. It's a shame, this place has really gone down hill post COVID. The pastries and desserts are also not nearly as good as they were. I'm guessing they no longer make them in house and you can definitely tell the difference. Looks like we won't be back. And after three people ignored us to be seated we asked girl at counter and she said no we are closing in 15 min!! Guess 8:15 pm is a new closing time. I am an 80 y/o retired military officer and former travelling fortune 500 employee. I know and enjoy good food and have eaten all over the U.S. and abroad. Wife and I came across this place while in the Reading, PA. area. At lunch time, we stopped on a chance. Clean, attractive and plenty of parking. In an area where lunch time is 12:00-2:30 P.M. This place still had 20 cars parked outside at 1:00. Good enough for me! Large run of the mill salad bar, 2-soup offerings. Menu has enough offerings to satisfy the choosiest diner. Wife had a turkey platter, stuffing, cranberry sauce and multiple trips to salad bar; she's a plain eater. Me, I went for the Greek salad and an ala carte GYRO. The Gyro was packed full of beef/lamb meat combo, lettuce, tomato, and onion, also great tasting Tasziki sauce. The Greek salad was huge, the best tasting soft creamy feta cheese and plenty of it, the dressing a hint of of sweet but, tangy. I have eaten in almost every Greek Diner in New Jersey and these 2 Greek food items put most of those to shame. The menu is not extensive, but there's something for everyone. To boot, a fantastic on premises, bakery. Stop by, and enjoy, you won't be disappointed. I had a wonderful experience here! Mainly because the Chicken Parmesan I ordered was absolutely wonderful and fantastically delicious! They have a good salad bar for a small town, but I wouldn't consider it exceptional. The veggies were pretty dry and didn't seem fresh. The fixings weren't fresh either (canned or packaged). Their soup of the day was clam chowder, and that was good. And my entree, the Chicken Parmesan. It was unbelievably good! The portion size was so huge!! I could have boxed up half and taken it home --even after making the biggest dent I could make! If you're not from the area, you may have to hold your breath when walking outside. It smelled HORRENDOUS due to the nearby mushroom farms. Also, the water was pretty gross. Just order something else. read more

Very good!! First time here. Seated right away at dinner time, about 6:10pm on Sunday. Salad bar was very good and maintained with fresh salads and dressings. Ran out of advertised soups, but had it replaced to maintain 3 choices. Waitress, Megan, was very pleasant, knowledgeable on menu items, and friendly. She was on top of the drinks, as soon as you ran out. Prime rib dinner was very good and cooked to order. Soup was very good. Very nice diner-type restaurant. Service was friendly and efficient. The restaurant was crowded but not loud so we could enjoy conversation at our table. We had brunch so eggs were our food of choice. My breakfast was a veggie omelette and it was tasty but the eggs were a little brown (overcooked) and they forgot to butter my English muffin. My hubby had eggs and corned beef hash which I tasted and liked. I think I will order that next time. The place is efficiently run so even on a Sunday the wait wasn't long. This is by far our go to diner! All their food is amazing! The French onion soup is to die for- it could be a meal in itself- it is soooo good! The salad bar is always fresh. I used to really love this place, but now it seems like the only good thing about it is their salad bar. The last time I was there, I ordered a chicken cordon bleu panini. The bread tasted like it was toasted in a skillet that French toast had previously been made in because my bread to my panini had a sweetness & cinnamon flavor to it. Maybe it's just because it's in rural, industrial Pennsylvania, but I saw no reason to be impressed with Cross Roads. The pies and desserts looked fabulous (didn't get to try), but the meals weren't anything spectacular. The main thing the restaurant had going for them was the unbelievably large portion sizes! Easily should be two or three meals instead of just one. But the water that the restaurant used tasted off (glasses of tap water were usually given back in favor of iced tea or a soft drink). The service was forgetful and would forget the extra drink order someone had added on. Also, like any family restaurant, don't expect to satisfy the requirements of your low-cal, low-carb, low-fat salads while here. I got the black and blue salad (blue cheese and steak on a simple house salad) to avoid feeling bloated in the heat, and there wasn't much in the salad except for lettuce and a couple tomato slices. read more

It's a diner for crying out loud... They're used to having large crowds of people. I was here for breakfast with my wife on 4/30/2015. While we have driven by quite a number of times it has always been a 'we'll have to go there some day' place. (Will the road construction on Rt. 61 ever end?) Breakfast: It's all about the little things. The good: 1: Both tea and coffee included free refills. (The place a little further south on Rt 61 charges for tea refills.) 2: The tea was served with a saucer. (Otherwise what are you supposed to do with the used tea bag?) 3: The eggs over-easy were over-easy. (Not over-however-they-happen-to-be when they come off the grill.) 4: The 2-2-2 breakfast special has two nice sized pancakes. (Easier to share than one big pancake. And one large pancake usually has an under cooked center.) I started this almost 7 months ago so I guess I'll consider it finished. :) read more

My husband and I would often order breakfast to go from here so when I participated in a meal share for a coworker whose family member passed away, I didn't hesitate to go here for the breakfast food I signed up for. I wanted to do containers of breakfast food family style. They were immediately turned off by the words "family style" as I tried to ask for how to best complete my order. I understand family style might be weird for pricing so I asked if I could order separate meals (eggs with breakfast meat) but could they separate each food item (eggs in one container, meat in another). The waitress actually told me in a not-so-nice way that she didn't think the cooks would do that because "they are really cranky today". The hostess told the waitress she would go ask them and the waitress shut the hostess down saying "I know they won't do it". I left and went to Wyomissing Family Restaurant and had a totally different experience (see review). They expressed sympathy for my friend and told me the half dozen donuts I intended to purchase were free of charge. I was blown away and left a 50% tip. My husband and I decided that in the future we will drive farther away to Wyomissing Family Restaurant instead. read more
