I got only $5.00 for bringing in 46 pieces of clothing. This consignment shop has too high expectations. NOT WORTH IT. Staff had a bad attitude and clothes on racks were messy. 95% of my items were not accepted. They only accept clothes that are trendy and flawless. Even if they are in good condition, they won't accept it if it's not trendy. Might as well donate all your clothes to goodwill instead of spending time in this store. read more

A thrift store that's actually fun to shop at! The stock is fed by Northwestern girls and Evanston pro shoppers who buy a ton of crap, wear it once, and realize it doesn't fit them "quite right" or is a couple months out of fashion. So they sell it to Crossroads, and we cheap-ass shoppers with a half hour to browse find some great items in good condition. Racks are organized by color, which is fun (but pants/skirts organized by size, thank god). The staff is fashion/brand-conscious when picking clothes, but not TOO much: Your BCBG pumps will be taken gladly, but so will your Forever 21 tee. Forever 21, Urban Outfitters, Old Navy, etc. isn't as marked down from what you'd usually pay as much as the "better" brands, so I wish they were A LOT more conservative about accepting those. I'd say prices across the board are between $10 - $30. They buy unwanted clothing at a decent rate-- 50% of selling price in store credit or 35% in cash. Instead of wastefully throwing away wearable clothing at the end of the year (and a disgusting number of people still do, as evidenced by the clothes hanging out of dumpsters once apartment leases end in August), Crossroads gives an incentive to sell it back so others can enjoy it. Inventory definitely explodes in the warmer months but there is still a lot to browse in the winter. The little red half-off stamps are awesome to see when you find something you like! read more

I have a friend who visits from out of town a few times a year and always wants to come here. I feel like her personal shopper or something, because I've somehow never come here looking for colors that look good on me, clothes in my size, or shoes to go with my hand bags (or vice versa). For this reason, I can't comment on rumors of a poor range of sizes. What I can tell you is that they have tons of colors, scandalously good prices on like-new designer goods (for example, a Kate Spade handbag I saw there that I know retailed for over $200), don't accept things in poor condition, and are cool about people who run in and out to add time to the meter because their friend can't decide which skirt to buy. One issue I do have with them is that if you buy socks or tights (they're still in the package! don't worry, no athlete's foot scare here), they're kind of pricey. I saw the same tights at a department store for $1 less. If you're a thrift shop and you can't beat department store prices, that's kind of nutty. Luckily for me, my friend never sends me looking for socks and tights, just...well, everything else. read more

Usually it's a hit or miss for me here since I always find something cute but it's never in my size. However I did find a nice NY&Co black zip up jacket for only $11. You can always bring those old (yet fashionable) clothes that you don't wear anymore here. Make sure that you contact them before you drop off your stuff to make sure that you're bringing in the right items. They give you 30% of what they're going to resell your clothes but if you get a voucher to purchase items there, you make 50% read more

I come here when I need cash. I can always find something in my closet that I never wear and trade it in for cash... That being said, they don't buy EVERYTHING, but if you have stylish clothes in good condition, that someone else will probably buy, you have a good chance of selling (it depends on the girl who is sorting through your clothes and if she likes your taste!) Evanston can be a kind of expen$ive town, but Crossroads helps those who live/work there get some deals! My best purchase was a gorgeous Express dress for $15 that retailed at $100. It was displayed in the window, and it was put on reserve for me to pick up the following week-fantastic! I also bought a purple coach wristlet for $20- not bad! My only complaint is that occasionally there's one girl there who gives a very bourgeouis glare to anyone she doesn't think is worth her time. Having worked in retail before, this is unacceptable, and although I may not fit the mold of the super-chic designers where the goods all came from..that's the whole point! We're all trying to save money, look good, be sustainable, and NOT be super snobby. The other girls at the store are super helpful- thank you! In general, it's good to shop right around season-change-time, and somewhat around the Northwestern schedule. After all, the girls and boys at the university are smart enough to attempt to empty their closets before they go back to their hometowns/study abroad and save the world. Much better than Plato's Closet, in my experience in trying to sell my clothes. I used to sell to Plato's Closet until suddenly, this year, an employee returned all my clothes to me and told me my clothes were too "sophisticated." My perception of the inventory at Crossroads was that the clothes hanging on the racks were definitely more "sophisticated" (25+) and trendier - less about comfort than teenage basics and more about fashion and style. They take higher quality brands than, say, Forever21 and American Eagle. Also, the store is much more organized and way less cluttered, but the store smelled liked moth balls to me. Word of advice: Crossroads accepts clothes of that season, so if you're trying to sell summer clothes in the winter, they will most likely get rejected. For the clothes they accept, they will offer you store credit or cash back (for about 1/3 less value than the store credit). read more

In a nut shell, Crossroads Trading Co. is slightly overpriced and the selection isn't very good. I have a hard time finding any clothes that fit (I'm a size 14... not huge). I just learned out from another Yelp review that they do not accept clothing that is size 14 or higher. I'm not sure if this is true or not, but if it is, it's pretty ridiculous!!! Do they think only skinny people live in Evanston? I mean, no clothes sized 14? Really? I thought that was a pretty normal size. They do have a good selection of reasonably priced new jewelry. I bought 2 really cute purses from there once but could never use them because they smelled so much like Fabreeze. I even washed them out a few times but could not get the stench out, so I ended up giving them away. read more

I have picked up some cute things here at a great price. I like the variety and the way it's arranged by color. What I don't like is the condescending way the sales clerk talked to me about how my clothes weren't acceptable. Then it occurred to me, the guy spends so much time working there that he probably doesn't even know what is 'current'. If it wasn't for his head turn and tone, I probably wouldn't have even taken the time to write this. Btw I went to another place and sold all of the items immediately. I really like this place. If I want a place to go get something quick and fast, I always go to Crossroads. It's very VERY inexpensive for the quality of clothing you get. With as much clothes as they have in there, it's organized by color and style. They really do try to sell for the season it's in and I think it's great. Selling clothes is a little bit difficult because it has to be in style, season, etc. etc. They're really picky. It's hard to sell things but usually when I bring in a bag of stuff they buy back at least 2 items. You can either get cash back (less than 50%, I don't remember what the percentage is or 50% in store credit). I have gotten alot of cute jeans and dresses there for less than $20. read more

I love this place. I would say I've been using crossroads fairly regularly over my past 3 years in Evanston as an NU student, and although I'm not on a first name basis with any of the sales employees, some of them do smile at me in recognition when I come here, which is about 2-3 times a quarter. I get tired of my clothes fairly easily so I like to sort out what I don't like every few months and bring it in to sell to get store credit. I've scored some pretty nice items that I love. They have a decent selection of coats and shoes, although I spend my credit mostly on jeans since they're usually either new or gently used, and all jeans look the same on me anyways. Biggest tip is don't bring something in unless you're 100% sure that you do not want it anymore. You might complain that they are only willing to give you $10 for a pair of shoes that cost you 5x more, somake sure that if you sell it, it would only be because otherwise they'll sit in your closet untouched. Crossroads will not give you a quote for your item when you hand it to them, so if you're unhappy with the price they're giving you, tough luck. read more

I had the same experience as Cate L. where they didn't take anything I brought in. There were Born boots, Gap clothes with tags on, and all in season. I heard the same sales person tell two other people the same thing as me on the same day while I was waiting for my selling time. I think that it seems like they only buy from people they know or don't buy anything when they have high inventory. As of this year, I can call myself a "seller" thanks to this place. Not certain if my items would pass the test, I handed over a bag to the fashion conscious buyer who was ready to sort through my clothes. Even though there was a line ahead of me, within 15 minutes the buyer called my name, so I could hear the details of the transaction. I accepted the deal and took store credit (at 50% vs. 35% cash). I often stop here early in the evening when, after looking in my closet, I can't figure out what to wear that night. Sometimes I find nothing, but oftentimes I find a cute top or dress for the occasion. I especially love when I can use my store credit to complete the cycle and pay nothing for the item. Ugh. So many mixed feelings. As a student that lived very close to the store this past year, I visited this location at least several times a week to peruse the aisles. Some of the workers treated me suspiciously, which I thought was sort of weird. I know I was in there a lot, but I was a frequent customer. Don't treat me like I'm stealing something please. True, I scored some seriously amazing designer pieces at a fraction of the cost. HOWEVER, 90% of the clothing is cheap, obviously used or just plain ugly. Furthermore, for the quality of merchandise that is typical for their store, the selling process and expectation levels of buyers is ridiculous. They turned down many of my classic, simple J. Crew pieces with little to no explanation time after time again. After attempting to sell a shirt that I purchased at that exact location a month prior (and didn't wear), I was told it was "worn" and "too threadbare" for their taste....(???) How 90% of the items in their store are selected in the first place with those sort of standards I experienced while selling is beyond me. Store also isn't the cleanest. Me and my friend were strolling along after we got out of watching a movie in a theater near by and I have to say that this was a hit! There was so many nice clothes at decent prices. Much cheaper than if you were to go in a mall but a little expensive if you were to compare it to a thrift store. The clothes are organized according to size, style and color. It was really easy to look for stuff, not complicated like your regular forever 21 store (funny that most of the clothes were from forever 21). So if you go here expect to spend on a single item arounf $11 bucks. read more

When I first started shopping in this store I thought it was great. Before they had really nice things that were well worth the price. Since then, I don't know if they have a new way of selecting merchandose but I rarely find nice things that fit me or are reasonably priced. For the most part, I now go here for handbags. I sew a lot and I know real leather from vinyl. I have quite a few designer and high end quality leather bags from this location. I have a love of real leather bags and maybe they only look at the brand name when pricing but the prices for the bags I have are unbeatable. I don't always find good things but if you're in the area stop in and you may get something really nice. The employees are normally really nice at this location but not so much at others. On one occasion at another location, I tried to sell some things to them. I brought in a few expensive designer career pieces. These are things you need for work (depending on your field). I was told my pieces were out of season. I work every season, pretty much everyday of every season. So please tell me how classic work attire can ever be out of season. It was no biggie just not what I expected to hear. I ended up taking my bundle to another resale store where the owner recogonized some pieces she'd seen in Neiman Marcus and the great quality. GREAT place to shop and sell! I've been crazy about Crossroads ever since I first stepped in the store. They have racks and racks of clothing. Lots of name brands far below their retail price. Most clothes are gently used but some are new. I once got a Chanel scarf from Crossroads. The staff is friendly, and there are fitting rooms too. There's a nice handbag and shoe selection too. Selling is very easy. You just give them your bag(s) of clothes and shop in the store or leave them and return in an hour or so. They evaluate the clothes and offer you cash or store credit. I've sold things to Crossroads over the years and for the most part been satisfied. But recently (I'd say the last 4-5 times I've tried selling) they have become overly selective especially with men's clothing. Today was the last straw. I brought in roughly 25 items, ranging from jackets, sweaters, jeans, and long sleeve shirts. All winter items, all designer brands, all things they claim they are currently buying. THEY BOUGHT 2 items for a total of $20 including a $300 JCrew pea coat. When I asked what was wrong with the other items the clerk replied. Some we done need, others look too worn. Too worn? Most of these have been worn maybe 3 times, if that! They won't take any clothes that have been purposely made to have a vintage or worn look, even though that's a style most men like. Not to mention they do not take any formal wear at all! Their policies are ridiculous, and needless to say I will be looking for another place to resell my clothing. read more

For selling: They are really picky about what they take here and in the long run you'd probably be better off running your own rummage sale and make out with more money than they would give you here. I'm kicking myself for selling them a brand new top I had brought from Express for $35 but lost the receipt. I threw it in with the rest of the clothes I had brought and didn't realize it until the worker was putting the tag on it! Both girls that work there were nice but like I said very picky about what they take. This store is a good place for people like me who are on a budget. Granted, not all the things they have in stock are wonderful, and most times it's a hit or miss, but if you're willing to spend some time, you can really finds some great items. Just the other day, I found a DVF blazer/jacket in almost perfect condition for half-off! However, I would not recommend buying brands like Old Navy, Forever 21, Charlotte Russe etc. unless the item is in near perfect condition because it really wouldn't be worth it. This store carries a lot of high-end brands that are sometimes priced ridiculously low, and when you spot them, get them! As for selling, I wouldn't really recommend it if you're looking to make cash because they don't give you a lot. I would only recommend selling your clothes here if you're going to donate them otherwise. Another thing about selling is that it all depends on the buyer. One time, I brought in 10 pieces of clothing, and the buyer bought 9 out of the 10. The second time, a different buyer went through my clothes and only bought 3 out of the 11. I also dislike how they don't give you the chance to take some pieces back. Once you hand your stuff over, they pick the pieces they want and automatically tag them. In the end, I think it's a great place. I've never been a fan of secondhand shops until I came here and discovered how fun it was to search for great pieces. Be on the look out for great brands at more than reasonable prices. Keep an eye out for those "half-off" stamps to get an even better deal! read more

Ok, so I may be biased because I just bought a dress here for 10 dollars and J Brand jeans for only 30, but I think this store is pretty good. Of course there are going to be some hideously tacky things here, but if you take some time to sift through all the crap, you can find some good items. Normally stores like this scare the buhjeesus out of me, but there is enough room between racks, and the clothes are color-coded, giving the store a very organized appearance. Just reading over complaints this place takes one look at you and decide they want nothing from you. I call negative racial business practices of Crossroads Trading Co. I entered and wasn't greeted by the sales staff. The store was a mess, associates were acting in a very unprofessional way to customers and anyone in hearing distance. I saw mainly (Courtney) and I believe her name is (Nicole) talking down to (African-American) customers and treating them like they are wasting there time. There are several customers lining up to sell while they gossiped. But I (Latin-American) Northwestern University affiliate waited, and waited, and waited, without any one even looking towards my direction or asking what I needed. In my opinion, the only thing that should be taken into consideration when purchasing clothes from a seller is the value/worth of the clothes themselves. I am no longer shopping there and suggesting to my friends that they avoid this particular store location! I have spoken with several people from our university about my experience at that particular store and they have all agreed that it was not a pleasant experience! I don't know if it is due to lack of management skills on the owners part or just plain stupidity, but something needs to change before that store ruins the reputation for other Crossroads Trading Co. locations. read more

I have yet to visit Crossroads without finding at least one killer designer item that has me strutting out of the store with a shit-eating grin plastered shamelessly across my face. This place is perfectly located for us college students who are inherently broke . . . and for the affluent ones who drop off last season's Robert Rodriguez sweater or Joie top or Coach handbag during their spring cleaning, which is then purchased by, say, me, for $25. What a beautiful part of the circle of life. If you're looking for a designer steal, scan the items lining the ceiling around the store - you will see high-end brands galore. Also sift through the jeans racks for some quality denim, e.g. Seven, Citizens of Humanity, Rock and Republic. And just remember: though $30-40 might seem like a lot of money to pay at a "second-hand" store for a pair of gently used True Religion jeans or a Juicy Couture dress, those items were once a lot more expensive (think more like $250) and hold up ridiculously well over time. When I visit Crossroads, I usually opt for one or two of these nicer items rather than 5-6 average items from the racks that I probably won't wear that often. I have yet to find a pair of shoes here - they're all kind of worn-out and they aren't organized by size - and a lot of the "Louis Vuitton" and "Coach" bags are knock-offs, so be careful! If you're looking for an authentic bag, check out the ones behind the counter, which are real and appropriately priced. But there aren't any legit Louis Vuitton Speedy bags hanging in the jumbled-up purse corner for $20 (much to my disappointment). Oh, and do NOT sell clothes here, because you'll feel majorly ripped off (see other reviews for how/why). You should only come here to buy. Speaking of which, if you even THINK you like a designer item, grab it - it probably won't be there the next day. read more

Clothes here cater to just about all tastes, and from recognizable designers to "who in their right mind would manufacture this catastrophe?" You have to be in the mood to dig for treasure here, so if you have an outfit emergency or need to locate a specific item of clothing and need the same item in several sizes, this place is not for you. But if you want a decent outfit for under $25 and you have half an hour to spare, check it out. I've been coming here for a while now. I like the clothes and the prude seems decent. I went to sell my clothes and it was about 52 in store credit and 30 dollars cash. I took the in store credit. The same day, I went in and went to get some thingS. It came up to 30 dollars and the same person who rang me up was the person who looked at my items. Apparently I only had 27 dollars and paid the rest. So... I got cheated out 23 dollars??? I thought I heard wrong so I just left. Well, I won't come here again. read more

Came her yesterday after visiting there Clark street location in the city. Each location has different buyers and they also have different demographics. Both this location and Clark street have friendly staff and clean and organized clothing sections. I was able to sell to both this location and Clark street almost all of my items, which was funny after being snubbed from the wicker park location. Oh well there loss. I'm just happy I was able to find and exchange awesome items for my older items and yes, the cash was good too! :-) read more

This new store definitely has the potential to be a huge hit. They accept gently used clothing, accessories, and shoes, as well as supply some new accessories, hats, and the like--they even pay you a percentage of the original price you paid for your stuf. The store is divided by clothing type and color, and most of what they have is in pretty good condition; plus, everything is very affordable...although lack of sizes can sometimes be frustrating. read more

I've been a frequent shopper of this store for a while, and I'm familiar enough with the vibe of the store to not expect much in the way of customer service--but I think I hit my breaking point last night. I came in to the store around 6:45pm and I was informed by no less than three, ready-to-clock-out employees that the store would be closing soon. From their not-so-subtle conversations, it was pretty clear that my being in the store so near to closing time was preventing them from going home early. I decided to make things super easy for the girls working there and just left without buying anything so they could go home. I decided to call in and speak with a manager this morning about my experience, but I ended up speaking with the manager who closed from the night before--He was nice enough on the phone and said he would speak to his employees, But considering he was one of the main people talking about getting out early, I doubt my concerns were really heard. read more

Came here today on a whim and was definitely impressed with the organization of the store. The employees have done a good job sorting out sizes and style (ex: they have a Free People rack and then Lulu/Nike stuff on a different rack). I found two essentially brand new tops by Tine (Anthropologie) and Joie (Neimans etc) and paid a fraction of the price. The tops didn't have tags but appear to have never been worn. read more
