There really isn't anything wrong with Crow Bar. There just isn't anything special about it. The crowd seemed really young, to the point where we were questioning if some of them were even legal. The music was metal, loud, and mostly sounded like one long scream-fest. Sorry, but that alone sort of bores me. We finally got a reprieve when an old Jane's Addiction song started playing. We sat outside on the non-descript patio at a generic picnic table that could have easily been any dive bar patio anywhere. Again, nothing wrong with it, but nothing too fabulous about it either. I could have done without all the smoking,and there was plenty of it. But I get it. I'm at a bar. On the patio. It goes with the territory. My boyfriend had to go to two bars because they didn't have liquor at one; we wound up opening two tabs, for which they charged us a dollar each to open. One of my friends had a Black Russian and it was a pretty good, pretty strong drink. I would probably not refer to the bartenders at mixologists, though. They didn't do anything really incredible that I saw or tasted. All that said, if I were a college student or in that age group, I would probably love this bar. But since I am not super-young, I'm a little over this. For people like me, Crow Bar is sort of a "been there, done that" kind of place. When I was in college, every bar I went to was exactly like this one- but in Dallas. To risk sounding like a broken record... There is nothing wrong with this bar. Man, I dig this place... Pros: 1. Great bartenders. Friendly, fun to look at, attentive, are cool with mild stupid booze fueled harmless flirting, can mix up a mean drink. Boy do I love this place. There are a ton of craft cocktail "dive" bars these days, but Crow Bar remains my favorite, probably because of the staff. They are some of the nicest, friendliest folks around. It may sound odd, but when you're an obviously older person, as I am, its refreshing when you are at a bar full of younger, tatted hipster types and not made to feel out of place. The folks running Crow Bar are exceptional at making me feel welcome, and I notice and appreciate that. I'm kind of bummed the Jamaican food trailer is no longer outside, I have yet to try the new one which is focused on sausage. Maybe next time. If you're down on far south Congress and in need of a drink in a comfortable, unassuming spot, drop in to Crow Bar and see if you find it as nice as I do. read more

Crow Bar. Cool name, interesting atmosphere, pretty good juke box. The location is nice if you're in that neighborhood. I'm giving it two stars because I hear its more of a beer bar than a cocktail bar. I went with some friends and my husband the other night. My friend and I were looking for good cocktails and thought we'd give theirs a try. Big mistake. I should have ordered a pint. My husband chose the safe route and didn't have any problems. I ordered a Pimms Cup and my friend ordered a drink called Odin's Breath. Both were pretty bad and 8 bucks each. I didn't know it was possible to screw up a Pimms cup, but apparently it can be done. Odin's Breath was pretty bad, too. I'm glad I didn't order it. It sort of looked and tasted like radioactive bile. Here's the deal, though. I can handle paying for bad drinks. Hell, I drank what I ordered and ordered 3 more. But my complaint is in the service. The bartenders were both REALLY slow and barely ever checked on us (we were sitting AT the bar). There were two bartenders; one nice and one who wouldn't talk to you unless you're a guy. At one point, I tried to order a drink from her and she acted very annoyed. Not sure if it was the fact that she was stressed out about making me another "signature" cocktail or the fact that I didn't have a penis. I have to say I like this bar. It seems that the owner does a good job at reading reviews and attempting to change things. (Ex: people say parking sucks, they put signs up that tell people where they can park. esc) Right when I walked in the door guy checked our ID's, he did not seem very friendly but the fact that he shot out of his seat to open the door for us was awesome. The bartenders are the same way. We waited to get our drink behind two other people who were not really paying attention so they served us. Of course we get the glares from the chatty girls to which the bartender quickly informed them she asked them 3 times what they wanted with no response. The staff is interesting, they are not overly friendly but they are not rude. They are just right down to business. Its reminds me a lot of what you would see from bartenders in a busy bar in NYC. The building must be made out of Marry Poppins bag because it looks tiny from the outside but huge on the inside. It has plenty of tables and two kinda cramped pool tables. Overall a nice environment but comes off more of a restaurant than a bar. The prices were good if you were drinking beer. I on the other hand can't drink beer and drink ciders and $6.00 for a Strongbow is what made me give this place 4 stars. I get the whole thing that ciders cost more for them to purchase but with other bars in the area charging $4.00 to $5.00 for a Strongbow you may feel that your paying a lot more. What I should have done though is checked if they had Deep Eddie Sweet Tea Vodka which is AMAZING! Overall the bar is awesome. Nice patio, great indoors and a staff I don't mind having to interact with. Hell who knows if I go there enough I may enjoy interacting with them. I have found the mothership where aging pseudo hipsters come to imbibe in booze (which is typically a Lone Star tallboy). That aside, this is a pretty cool SoCo hangout. Despite the heavily hipstered crowd there are redeeming factors that make this watering hole worthwile. One being their amazing mixed drink menu. I haven't seen such a stellar list of mixed and muddled cocktails since leaving Portland. The atmosphere suffers a bit from acute bipolar disorder. The interior is lacking quite a bit; dark, dingy and uninviting. The outdoor patio on the other hand is the major draw to this place. The exterior booze garden is amazing; lots of seating, great lighting and good people watching with a bar only 15 feet away. The staff can be hit or miss wavering between apathetic hipsters syndrome to genuine openness. Never been in a hurry to get a drink (even during the week) because you're not going to get served right away. Parking can be a bit of a bugger when it's busy with most of the neighbor on-street spots being taken. It's best to park in the Ben White Florist lot which they have any agreement with. Overall, this is the place to be on South Congress... the patio is so worth it! read more

I. LOVE. THIS. BAR. Love. First of all, I love that they are all about specialty cocktails. They're really trying to get back to old school mixology, which just makes me happy. They have 90+ cocktails that they are apparently planning to rotate onto their featured list every few months. The staff at Crow Bar are also pretty great. I've now met both of the owners, and these guys are awesome. Super friendly and fun to talk to. All of the bartenders seem to like working there, and enjoy talking about the drinks, how they're made, etc. Perhaps best of all is the general ambiance. Crow Bar has definitely captured that awesome laid back vibe that makes you just want to hang out there. I was ready to give this place 5 stars. Really. I was. I've been here several times and I had always had good experiences. But I saw something when I was leaving this time that disgusted me. Let me start from the beginning. Parking is super easy for a popular bar such as this. Most of the nearby businesses close around 6pm, so you can park there or on the neighborhood streets behind. They have a small lot of their own behind as well. I love that happy hour is until 8pm, even on Saturday nights. And I really liked the drinks. There were so many specialty cocktails on the chalk board, but we had to try the Frexia Margarita. It was sweet but had fresh jalapeños in it, so sweet and pretty spicy. It was an unexpected flavor. Unexpected in a good way. I had two before I knew I needed to switch to Strongbow. We sat outside, since it's the time of year one can actually be outside in Austin. There was plenty of seating. Everyone just talking and minding their own business. Thank goodness. The crowd was pretty diverse but I did see that sub genre of hipster whose fashion icons are former Disney princesses (you know, bun on top of the head, big glasses with no lenses, motorcycle jackets, etc). I guess you have to expect that since it's right across the street from St. Edwards. Anyway, when we were inside settling the tab, my friend had a disturbed look on his face. I said, "What's wrong?" He pointed at the television screen. On it was some old B-movie, or maybe some old porno, full of nude women frolicking around. I do not want to see objectified women, on a media that can be controlled, when I'm out at a bar. Call me a fuddy-duddy second wave feminist. I know I am. Proud of it. Hyper-sexuality and objectification does not equal liberation. Crow Bar, please reconsider what you put on the big screen. read more

It's hard to find a good metal bar these days. This is one of them. Cool Viking art abounds. Service was decent. Ice cold AC. I was told by a couple of friends about the Crow Bar, and finally made it out for a drink. Overall, I really like this little bar. The bar has an intimate feeling, and always a plus - wifi! My favorite thing is the awesome mixed specialty drinks, which were really creative, oh so tasty and fresh! The drinks of the day change and there about 8 options on a big chalkboard by the bar the day I hung out. I had a 'Odin's breath' which was a herbal and refreshing gin, mint, basil drink. My favorite drink was a "Lavender infused vodka, strawberry lemonade". It was the most delicious drink I've had in awhile. The lavender with the strawberries had a light , almost vanilla flavor - highly recommend! The best part about this bar, outside of the drinks, was the customer service. The owner was behind the bar, smiling and friendly. The door guy was extremely courteous, as well as the rest of the bartenders. Only two down sides - They don't allow dogs, though they have have a perfect outdoor patio for it.. The owner had a very reasonable explanation about insurance and was quick with a friendly "sorry!". Also, the specialty drinks are about 8$ each, and though they are extra delicious, you can only afford about two at that price. So me and 4 of my friends decided to night cap it here after Blues on the Green at Zilker Park. I instantly liked the feel of it, like an old church in the desert converted into a bar; the lights, the lettering - very Austin, very cool. I would say that if you wanted a cocktail to go into the bar versus the outside bar. The bartender outside was very sweet but I would say that my friends were way more pleased with their martinis (mixed by the owner) than I was with my margarita. Not sure a margarita was the best choice to begin with but it's almost a reflex order with how often I have tex-mex! My friends were very pleased with the owner and with the 1/2 off SIN drink specials. My boyfriend and I each had a cocktail and a beer and didn't even spend an entire $20! I am part of a large Friday happy hour group and I will definitely put Crow Bar into the rotation. Wouldn't mind throwing these guys some more business. Stopped by the Crow Bar on the way home from one of Sarah W's and my frequent dinners at Homeslice. I came to the conclusion that we were not remotely cool (read: tattooed) enough to hang out there. In fact, there is not a single tattoo to be found on our finely sculpted bodies. Generally I find Austin establishments to be a fairly eclectic mix of people, but on this particular night, I found the group to be fairly homogeneous. And as such, I'd have to recommend the following: if you are a tattooed hipster, you absolutely must try this place. If you are either A) tattooed, or B) hipster, you will likely enjoy this place. If you are neither tattooed, nor hipster - you may want to bring a few friends with you, or you may stand out in the crowd at this place. Just a heads up. read more

The had a decent selection of beers on tap as well as some good drinks on the menu. A extra is the taco truck parked outside that had sone good food as well. I'm super disappointed in this place. Their interesting cocktails sounded great and Meredith, the bartender was very nice. However, the late night door staff ruined the entire evening. Having a racist work the door, at a cool bar in Austin, just seems weird, but that's certainly what I encountered. I will never go back and I will make sure that most people I meet will hear about my experience. It was so bad, that I left a voicemail for the manager, asking for them to call me back, so I could share my experience and the horrible treatment of my friend. I really, really like the Crow Bar. In fact, its kinda my new fave. The Crowd is kinda artsy, but completely non-pretentious. After reading Jackson M.'s reviews from August 28th and 30th, I probably won't return. REALLY?? The owner wrote to you? How unprofessional can you be?! What he should have done was thank Jackson M. and use the review to improve the business. Watch this business go down hill quickly... Anyway, before reading that I probably would have given the place 2 or 3 stars. There isn't really anything WRONG with the place, there's just nothing special about it and the bartender seemed rather pretentious. (The door guy was cool though, so he gets 5 stars.) And yes... $10 minimum. I generally always pay with cash, but I realized that I only had $4 cash on me and my tab was only $4 since I only had one beer as I'm not a big drinker. Soooo... the bartender wouldn't run my card for less than $10, which I'm not about to allow for a $4 beer so I was unable to tip her and felt bad! :( (That isn't her fault of course, but I would prefer any bar that I call "mine" to work with me now and then and cut me a break on the days when I only have $4 since I do generally always use cash. Interesting concept. There are not bartenders here, they are mixologists. Yes, the drinks are a bit more expensive, but these are not your typically Jack and Coke, Vodka and Cranberry type of drinks. These are culinary achievements. I love what the Mixologists do with cucumber, basil and ginger, trust me you put those together with gin or vodka and it is a partay in your mouth. The patio is huge and awesome when it's nice out. The staff can be hit or miss. They are either really awesome and nice or gruff and mean. Some of them will even completely ignore you! There's always plenty of seating and I've always had a fun night there. They also have some great specialty cocktails. I highly suggest their White Russian. It was the talk of our table. Warning: It might be better to pay in cash. We had a tab with a Coors tallboy and one specialty White Russian. It should have been around $10-$13 but was somehow $25. Crow is my favorite dive bar.. and just about as Austin as it gets. You want a $2 beer? Crow. You want a fancy cocktail with fresh ingredients? Crow. You want to play pool? Crow. You want to sit and be left alone to drink? Crow. You want to hang out with friends and actually be able to hear each other? Crow. You see where I'm going with this? Happy hour lasts till 8 and later in the day they have rotating food trucks, parking can be limited but they have an agreement with the stores next door where you can park there after 6 or 8, depending on which one it is. Bartenders are quick and pour strong (can't ever complain about that!), and definitely consistent with the quality of the drinks. Everything is well priced and they have daily specials as well. I love the patio, right on S Congress and plenty of seating (they keep adding more as well). Not as much room to sit inside but plenty of space. There are TV's through out as well if you're trying to catch a game, or some crappy old indie movie. To be noted: this is an Austin dive bar.. if you want something fancy or to be treated extra special this is not the place for you. If you are easily offended I also suggest you go somewhere else, again-this is a dive bar... have realistic expectations. read more

At first this place was kind of just "eh", but the more I went the more I found it to be a regular place to go. All the bartenders are super friendly, and the specialty drinks are great. Prices are pretty decent compared to other places. There's a pool table, an outdoor courtyard with a bar, and an inside bar. There's TVs to watch the games, and usually always a good crowd. Crow Bar's coat-of-arms is somehow NOT A FRAKKING CROWBAR (although the name is still great anyhow because CROWBAR - noun.- the introductory weapon of choice in nearly any first-person-shooter from the last 20 odd years and of street thugs in movies since the dawn of street thugs in movies, plus, also handy as a tool). I'll let this one slide, though, because a crowbar icon is kinda non-descript, and I guess they didn't want their logo to be a street thug brandishing iron. The inside is ok (although I'm on the fence about the pool table right smack there when you walk in). The patio is a decent size (although it faces South Congress, which they trumpet on their web site. I'm not anti-South Congress, far from it, I'm just anti patios-facing-big-roads-full-of-cars-driving-by-on-a-ground-level.) I couldn't spy whether they had patio misters (which would boost them a star) for when the fiery orb of death in the sky returns (although they have umbrellas sometimes, and heaters.) The jukebox? randomly dealt out death metal one song at a time every 20 minutes (although death metal is one of the only two musical genres I try to avoid at all costs, it was interesting how a song would blast on for 5 minutes, and then, silence). My screwdriver was weakish (although they did have Monopolowa, blessed true potato vodka, and the price was more reasonable that the usual non-house-well-drink fee). The staff people at Crow Bar were very pleasant (and although they were all very pleasant...they were still very pleasant. I give 'em another 1/2 star). If you need (non-vegan) food, currently Goldis' (handmade!) Sausage Company food trailer is in their backyard, and is pretty damn good if you are a sausage man/woman (although that is not a euphemism, and no I will not boost my star rating for them just because the food trailer is kickin'). Sadly, another television in a bar (although in a place like this, it would seem like blasphemy to NOT have one - to the people that expect tv's in a place like this.) So, to wit: if you are hanging out at this particular juncture of South Congress and are between the Ben White Florist (which nicely provides overflow parking after hours) and Amy's Ice Cream, right across from St. Edward's, Crow Bar should do just fine (although it doesn't hurt to have an entertaining lady dressed to kill at your side, either). read more

Work and life have kept me away from Crow Bar.. I miss it and look over at it as I drive by, telling myself... you need to stop and have a drink and relax for a bit. Now my drink of choice when I do go to Crow Bar is the Strawberry lavender lemonades. They are the BEST! Especially if Gillian makes them! Delish! Awesome, refreshing and oh so tasty. Gosh, my mouth is watering just thinking about one right now.... I can think of several times I have had a few of these and then I am like BAM.. wait I don't feel my top lip.. LOL Maybe I'm just a lightweight that usually happens when I am on my second one and have had less than half of it to drink! Ha Ha But, they are seriously so delicious. I remember way back when during the early days of Crow Bar one Summer they had Frozen strawberry lavender lemonades..Those were out of this world!!. It was cooling and refreshing as you sat outside at the patio bar enjoying the chill vibe that is Crow Bar. I remember that night I was hanging out with my brother Jack and Gillian recommended them to us ..he was like oh nah that looks like a girl's drink. Gillian said "trust me" all the guys here have been saying that..but look around what is everyone drinking. As we looked around it was true there were lots of guys drinking this frozen goodness. So, my brother gave one a try and that was it... the rest of the night that's all we had as we chatted and enjoyed the evening. But, Alas those didn't last very long...because the machine at the time would shock the girls every time they filled a cup with the icy cold goodness and it was deemed a safety hazard. But, you can still get the regular strawberry lavender lemonades at Crow Bar and they are a good way to enjoy the summer evenings as you sit and relax at their patio bar. read more

I have been several times on different days but Sundays are usually my go to day with a coworker or two. Liz runs a solid HH on Sundays with great drink prices. She's super friendly and quick. I love the Summer Fling--it's one of the best drinks they have! The patio is really nice, but the inside is awkward, dark, and not a place I imagine myself being when I'm trying to get happy for an hour. Awhile back, I went to Crow Bar and I wasn't allowed to bring my dog inside the gates of the patio. Even though it's outside, they wouldn't allow my 8 pound dog to chill in my lap, so he had to sit on the other side of the fence dazed and confused. I eventually begged the bouncer guy to let me hold him and I promised he'd be really good..he let me, but he was NOT happy about it. It took a lot of convincing. Anyway, I went to Crow Bar yesterday and there were two huge dogs sitting outside, so I'm assuming they changed their policy? If so, YAY, but like...still bitter about that one time. This place isn't bad, but not great either. It's a good typical dive bar...I think I may have felt more inclined to giving another star if they knew how to make a good Manhattan. I order my Manhattans with Bullit Rye up - but they don't have luxardo cherries, and the bartender shook the hell out of it and used too much bitters. We ordered a glass of house wine for my fiancé that tasted stale, and the beer we got was a little warm. We stayed for a bit and got different beers and had a shot with friends, and it got better over time (but I think the booze kicked in! Ha.) Additionally, please start tasting the drinks you serve- I love strong, but drinking kerosene is brutal. Last item of note, your patio stinks of hot tar. I went here for the first time the other night after passing by often. The first thing that grabbed my attention was jukebox. Just passing by it was open to a page that had Scott H. Biram, Nick Cave, Tom Waits and a couple other great artists that I can't recall. This is a good sign. The next thing was the beers on tap-probably about 10 mostly(all?) local beers. Another good sign. Then there was actually getting to the bar. Both bartenders were working on some cocktails and it was clear they were doing this well. I didn't want a mixed drink, however-I wanted a beer. And I wanted for awhile. The line wasn't particularly long, but I spent a lot of time waiting for other people's fancy drinks to be done before I could get a beer. And it was on the higher end pricewise. It was the only sour part to an otherwise good experience. I'm going to come back and possibly with regularity. The fact that, as someone else pointed out, they make a good old fashioned is going to make me return just to see for myself. read more

Crow Bar is 100% Austin, from before Austin become hipster. It has an unpretentious, divey atmosphere. When we showed up, 7ish on a Friday night, it was still fairly uncrowded, and there was only a short line at the bar. Service is walk-up at the bar- not table service. The cocktail list is creative and well crafted at Crow. The drinks with serrano/jalapeno peppers are really spicy, unlike the whittled down versions some bars serve. The problem I had with these drinks was that they had a bit of a syrupy taste. Instead of the aroma of fresh watermelon, or pineapple, I felt like I was drinking something that had been processed, bottled and then used in my drink. It took away from how wonderful the drink sounded. The bartender was quick and friendly - I enjoyed watching her mix our drinks. The patio was large and inviting, despite the number of people smoking. Sit upwind if you know the smell bothers you. Crow also suffers from having nothing to munch on. Went on a Thursday night and there was a sizable crowd on the patio-kinda trendy. We went inside to the bar. The bartender took more than her sweet time to serve us including wiping down the other side of the bar, chatting with another bartender, and re-arranging bottles on the wall-did not play into my rating though. We bought two different specialty drinks, one was ginger lemonade and the other was a blackberry (and gin I think?) mix. The lemonade was tasty and the blackberry drink was ok but overall I was not impressed ($8 a piece if I remember right). I love trying new drinks and original combinations but if I come to a place with specialty cocktails I expect them to be high quality. I've had less original but better drinks at cheaper prices throughout Austin. It is worth coming to try some of their original drinks but I do not think I could ever be a regular. read more
