Great YMCA that I love going to. Lots of equipment, classes, community info/activities, and even a heated pool (which I love). I visit this YMCA branch periodically, and I like it! It tends to be a less crowded YMCA compared to my closest branch though it has less newer gym machine equipment than my neighborhood location. However, they have what I need for a good workout including treadmills, other cardio equipment, and weight machines/free weights that workout the common muscle groups. The front desk staff are welcoming, and there's both a parking lot and ample street parking nearby. read more

The customer service is hit or miss. Some are very friendly and knowledgeable, some are not. It seems fairly inconsistent depending on when you go and what kind of information you're asking for and from whom. The facility seems very clean, but there are some seating areas that probably need replacement benches and the existing ones shouldn't be in use. There seems to be a good variety of activities to choose from, but the website and app are not very user friendly. read more

I've been coming to this Y location to work with my personal trainer (ASK FOR JIMMY - he's amazing!!) - not all locations offer that particular service but this one does and it's great bc they have the most extensive weight rooms of the local ones I've visited. They have THREE different weight rooms here!! Some with nautilus machines and some with mostly free weights, and another with medicine balls and group bikes for spin classes etc. They also have the largest treadmill room of all the area locations that includes bikes, ellipticals, a stair master and two rowing machines! They only have one pool here (indoor) and it's the smallest in the area - you make timed reservations via their app but it fills up fast. The app is super easy to use and you can block out 30 minute increments as available in each lane with no limit to how long you want to swim - so helpful in avoiding conflicts! They have a very large ballroom/classroom and weekly classes you can also sign up for - also very easy to do in their app. This location also boasts the largest variety of class options in the area! The staff are all wonderful - so helpful and friendly! I absolutely LOVE my trainer Jimmy - he's calm but pushes me still and very kind and knowledgeable. He'll be offering classes of his own soon - I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Jimmy!! He's the best! They have an upstairs section and downstairs- but I think they have an elevator (I'm not 100% sure). Prices are very reasonable- especially compared to all the other gyms in the area - I've been shopping around for general gym services with a pool and personal trainer for several months now and the prices here beat all the others. They have a tiny parking lot that fills up fast but there's also street parking. read more

LOVE this YMCA including the classes, the facilities and majority of staff! Not impressed by the gentleman who works in the daycare center, often alongside the most incredible older lady of asian decent, as he puts 0 effort into actually engaging the children/doing his job but rather just attempts to get parents back in to retrieve their children. **Wonderful Support and Kindness During My Recovery** About two months ago, I joined the YMCA in South Pasadena after a chronic foot issue developed into severe inflammation. Along with my medical treatments, I needed a safe way to strengthen my feet and lower legs--for both recovery and long-term maintenance--but I couldn't put my full body weight on them. Exercising in the water turned out to be the best and only option for me. Although the pool doesn't have a built-in stair, the staff kindly provides a movable stair so I can enter and exit the pool while safely distributing weight on my feet. They've been incredibly accommodating and attentive to my condition, and I'm truly grateful. Thanks to this support, I've been able to continue my exercises, and I've already seen real improvement--my toes began to bend again just two weeks ago, and my feet are recovering. Thank you to everyone at the YMCA for your hospitality each time I enter the facility--the big smile and warm welcome from Luis at the front desk, Erin and Carson for their care and attention at the pool , and Sylvia, who oversees this location, for creating such a welcoming and supportive environment. Impossible to get swim lanes reserved. The gym is outdated, disorganized and dirty. The way the whole gym is managed reminds me on of a poorly run government organization where no one gives a crap. Also, they close at 8 on workdays, 3pm on Saturdays, and are closed on Sundays, so not friendly to people who, you know, have jobs and such. read more

It's very dirty in there. If you trace a finger over the paper towel dispensers or any flat surface you'll get a big dust smudge. They never cleaned the walls, vents, and they half clean the equipment (dust on the weights and pulleys) I went there for about two months consistently but I was always kinda sad about it. Prison basement vibes. People are not nice and I think it's because of the vibe in there. read more

I enrolled my son in a toddler swim class, but unfortunately, we had a very disappointing experience with the staff. On the first day, my son was reluctant to get into the water, so his grandmother helped him in, but he became very upset and started crying. Instead of offering any assistance, the instructor, Ava, told them to "go home" and gave them a look suggesting they should leave. My son's grandmother did not want to leave voluntarily; she felt pushed out. When I spoke with the management team, specifically Christ (if I recall correctly) and Curtis, the manager they insisted that Ava did not say this, she did not even had contact with grandma, no body else heard that, there is no video, Ava does not have that personality, suggesting that I was interpreting the situation incorrectly. And they say they are not only covering the staffs but for me, even I did not feel any support. However, when I confronted Ava directly and asked if she had said those words, she denied it, though she seemed visibly uncomfortable, with her face turning red. I then asked her not to say such things in the future, to which she agreed. Given these facts, I see no reason why my son's grandmother would lie about what happened, while there are many reasons for the staff to deny it. I'm deeply disappointed by the unprofessionalism and lack of support shown by the instructor and management team. This experience has raised serious concerns about how they handle situations involving young children and their families. I want my son to finish this class, even though it feels like a waste of time since he still hasn't gotten into the water after two sessions. I'm okay with him just playing around, as I'm not concerned about the cost. However, once this class is over, we won't be returning. read more

This place is a dump. It's old and run down. The bathroom is filthy. There are multiple tiny weight rooms with no theme. The equipment is completely disorganized so you have no idea where to look for something you want. No one puts anything back. I was looking for bands and found a few random ones here and there throughout the gym. The staff just sits at the desk and chats with each other, like idk maybe do your job and go organize some stuff?! Completely regret spending 50 for a month here when I won't even return. read more

This YMCA used to be amazing but not anymore. The gym is closed on Sundays plus so many other reasons. When I went on a Saturday morning to attend one of only two classes listed, the class was permanently canceled and the one following it was full with the only way to attend was via electronic signup. When I asked to see the schedule, the schedule was wrong with the class listed. The service is disrespectful and unapologetic. Not worth the fee demanded for attendance. read more

Went in today for community support as we lost our home due to the fires. VERY RUDE volunteers or staff. Yes I am Hispanic but I was speaking to my mother in English. I had someone come up to me asking in Spanish for my bracelet. They were speaking about my family in English as if we didn't understand. I agree with the comments below about the lack of care with the swim instructors. This location and the one in Sierra Madre has the kids doing laps with no instruction on technique, etc. when my daughter was in swim crew in Sierra Madre, the coach was either talking to the lifeguard or staring at the mountains while the poor kids were swimming out of breath. The So Pas location is no different. There were about 4 kids in my daughter's level 4 class with three instructors who were all swimming together and talking behind the kids. read more

Having compared the other two Y's nearby, this is far better for those who want options to vary their exercise routines. Impossible to get reservation to use the most basic amenities. Not worth cheeping out and getting this membership. It is wayyyyyy overbooked. It sounds too good to be true because it is. The one star is for the clientele. Three stars for the equipment. I've been a member on and off at this YMCA; since I left my NELA "hood," and I moved my family to South Pas. back in 2003. (We moved out of South Pas. last fall due to an obnoxious colorless idiot who had moved in above our unit.) While I'm still a monthly membership paying member, I won't be soon. Once this YMCA re-opens, I'm canceling my membership. My reasons for canceling are my COVID-19 concerns, as well as, my growing weary of receiving the condescending "stink-eyes" from the "affluent" YMCA members who reside in the "People's Republic's" of South Pasadena, and San Marino. I've only maintained my membership due to a YMCA email requesting that members not cancel their memberships in order to help fund both: the YMCA employee payroll, as well as, the YMCA community outreach programs. During the past pre-COVID-19, cold and flu seasons, people infected with colds or flu would come to this YMCA, and they would work out. Although doubtful, I can only hope that measures will be taken to not allow this to continue. Having recently completed my 59th solar orbit- I'm not taking that chance. I'm close enough to 60- I'm not risking it. And, after all, it is a YMCA, and not an OMCA. (Although I've rarely encountered many members displaying virtues resembling Christianity. Plus, my ability to suffer fools continues to diminish with each lap sound the sun.) Additionally, as one of the few people of "Chicano color" here at this YMCA, rarely, have I even felt "tolerated," let alone welcome. I got the "stink-eye," on the regular, oh yeah, and by people who actually thought that what they were doing, LOL, constituted working out. Only a handful of people were genuinely cordial to me, and usually, like me, they are people of color. I was hoping, that with the recent tragic deaths, this might no longer be the case. A few weeks ago, there were some eye-opening appearances in South Pasadena protests. But, now, if the absence of "COLORLESS, anti-racism protesters" in South Pasadena is any clue- it doesn't appear promising. I guess since the major networks didn't cover South Pasadena protests, and they wouldn't be able to watch themselves on their HDTV's- Why should they continue to show up? Yeah, I think I've had enough, no more privileged prejudiced parents, and no of their more spoiled kiddies. I'll save both my money, and my sanity. And I'll add some heavier hex dumbells to my set, and they will be rubber coated. read more

I traveled far to their parking lot to deliver a cap belong to my two year old grand son, got last parking space here. Walked around neighborhood, met a Mexican lady proudly saying she's a teacher of LA unified school district. Aly is the Asian faced student aid, so was the student in kids play room. He didn't even answered verbally when my grandson told him that he couldn't open that toy bag. He say like a Buddhist. I never thought it's proper to sit like that, especially around kids. Joined here for swim classes....what a huge hit and miss every time. Only ONCE we got instructors interested in teaching how to actually swim. You'll be able to tell as soon as the first lesson. Some when paired off...my gosh all they do is chit chat and flirt and pay absolutely no attention to what they 'teach' the kids. SIMPLE explanation and then kids have to do it. Hardly show strokes or instruction or guidance. Only once we got an instructor that seemed genuinely interested in actually teaching the lesson and improving to the next level. This last class I was at, the kids had to swim across the whole pool for first time. Lo and behold the male and female instructors both have their back turned while some are struggling behind, just flirting with each other away. Absolute failure in teaching there. Never again...seriously need to have new staff and/or management. Or retrain them to have basic swim teaching skills instead of avoiding doing their jobs. Previous lesson had one teacher with over 8 kids. Ideally supposed to be 6:1. Other classes had that ratio or less, but manager had no problems giving double instructors to those class, and leaving the overwhelmed class with only one instructor...?! And how many times have classes been cancelled last minute due to water temperature? Like every monthly session seems to have one class cancelled because of this. Do NOT sign up for this place. If you'd like to cancel your membership, it is a freaking nightmare. If you're looking to cancel, THEY DON'T HANDLE IT IN PERSON / PHONE. They give you an email which they say takes 15 days to process! "Yeah, send us an email and MAYBE we'll get to you in 2 weeks" is basically their motto. Even Planet Fitness, the lower end of gym chains, allow you to easily cancel in person, same day. When getting out of a gym is harder than exiting the Church of Scientology, it's huge red flag. 0/10 would highly NOT recommend. read more

I've been going here for almost 15 years now... Great people, great staff, and they've been handling the Covid situation in stride. I've seen several negative reviews here, which disheartens me a bit. Everybody has had a grumpy day here and there. Arguments happen, rules rub people the wrong way. I'm sure I am no exception. I'm so thrilled that I left the 24 hour fitness far far behind after 17 years of membership. Even though my price was cheap, it had become very inconvenient as there isn't one near where I live. Everyone I know goes to the Y so I decided to cash in a free week and check in out. It's totally a bare bones gym. No TVs, no Hollywood models making me feel inferior, no Crunch. You gotta just want to WORK OUT. Which is why I joined. And I've never once had to wait for a machine. NEVER ONCE. That is why I like the Y so much. At the 24 hour in Hollywood, I always had to wait. So refreshing to just walk in and start running. I used the pool to train for my tri and it is clean and well maintained. It gets crowded though in lane swim sessions. The locker room is decent but not great...they are doing improvements before the end of the year (2011). They have a great classes room and a spin room. I haven't taken any classes but I plan to in the new year. Overall, the facilities are decent. But the best feature is the on staff fitness counselor who will help you with everything from a work out plan to motivational emails - all included in your monthly fees. read more

This particular YMCA can be easily missed considering it blends in very well with its natural surroundings. I came to this particular YMCA to sign up for swimming classes. Unfortunately, I am not a member of this YMCA, so I did not get priority for these classes. However, I was able to make the cut off. I think that it was still pretty pricey for the lessons at $60 for four 30 minute group sessions. I do like my instructor for the swimming class. However, I think that 30 minutes is definitely not that much time to learn. In addition, there is only 1 lane blocked off for lessons making it rather difficult to learn. I think however the gym facilities are decent. There seems to be an incentive program for members to earn points for prizes. The YMCA is geared towards youth as many of the people that come here are kids. read more

We tried membership here, so kids could take swimming lessons. The pool is huge and shower area well equipped. The only thing is the pool water was not very clean. It could be due to so many students swimming at once. The gym area feels a bit congested with not much air circulations. It seems to be one of the most popular locations as we keep running into other parents. read more

I have mixed feelings about this YMCA location. Staff is not always very welcoming except for one lady that seems to be new. The last time I took my toddler for swimming classes they canceled one class 15 minutes in advance. You need appointments for every exercise group class and to use the swimming pool. Many classes fill out pretty quickly - I feel fighting with a group of people using the app to reserve a spot for my kid to do some laps. I use the app and it's ok. They are closed on Sundays. The swimming pool temperature is very cold for a heated indoor pool. Still, it is a clean place and the family membership is ok. read more

Staff is friendly and nice. However, the facility itself is just okay. It feels cramped. Its split up into two floors. One floor has most the classrooms and the other floor is for a lot of the equipment. There is a swimming pool that doesn't get too busy but it is only 4 lanes so if it is busy, you can't really hop in. Overall, it is still a gym that has access to different equipment and classes to take and that makes it worth the $38/mo fee. read more

I love this YMCA! And the YMCA in general, at least the gyms I have been to in the San Gabriel Valley. The South Pasadena Y has nice work out facilities (I use the elliptical and treadmill, my husband uses the weight room- he uses kettle bells and does wish they had heavier bells). The locker rooms are clean with nice extras like a swim suit spinning machine and showers. I love the opportunities for my kids, especially the babysitting facilities (2 hours free while you work out) and affordable group swim lessons. Group lessons in general aren't nearly as efficient at helping my kids progress than private, in my experience. However, the swim program is well organized with nice staff. There are so many cool programs the Y offers that I haven't yet tried but am planning to soon, including family camping, often at their YMCA camps, which have ropes courses and petting zoos, amongst other fun extras. Everything's organized, perfect for the busy/lazy camper!) I haven't tried the group classes, but the yoga, pilates, barre, and kids fitness classes look popular and organized. 10+ years of paying an ever increasing YMCA bill. We would use is it sporadically. Today I finally got off my rear end to go to the stretching class. I slide my card through and the girl calls me to the front desk. They said I had not paid since December. Of course its automatic Amex card payments so I had no idea. They gave the strong impression that I had to provide proof of payment or I couldn't use the gym. When I called them on that they denied that they had said I couldn't use the facilities. I say "they" now as the young-ish fem guy jumped into the fray with his head bob. Already a bit of a stressful thing, stopping work mid-day to get some exercise in. How am I suppose to prove payment with my keys, phone and a towel in hand? I tried to get on Amex via my iphone and of course get locked out of my Amex account. I am up for a stretch class now. Instead of saying "hey, you know you haven't made a payment since Dec. Here is our print out. Call the office after you check your amex card when you get home." They assumed I was trying to get one over on... the YMCA, I guess? After about $10K in payments over the years. Right, father of 4, who coached YMCA basketball, with two more little ones coming through the system. Meh, my wife doesn't use it for swim lessons, camps, basketball, anyway anymore, she goes to the Rose Bowl Aquatic Ctr. Instructors at YMCA are cool but now that I think about it there was always a bit of attitude with some of the "non-performance oriented" staff. Ironically I had texted my wife this same day before I went and said "should we cancel the membership". I guess it was already canceled, she said she didn't cancel it... considering I theoretically could have been paying for a another 10, 20, 30 years, as I have roots in South Pasadena (we ain't going no where), that's a bit of potential income loss. read more

This is a hard one. I really like that the YMCA is not like other meat-market type gyms. I can walk in at peak hours and get my workout in, and this particular facility has state of the art equipment that remembers your workout settings with the entry of your personal code. Spin class instructors have all been decent. My primary beef with this location is there unresponsiveness to a letter of complaint I wrote. The vending machine never works and they don't sell reusable water bottles, so, if like me, and you leave yours at home someday, you have to get up and use the drinking fountain in the middle of your spin class. I asked that they at least post an "out of order" sign on the vending machine or unplug it - no response. Also, they do not post their group excercise schedules online. Get with the program peeps, it's not that hard to do. read more

Everyone is SUPER nice here. Staff always says hello and is very friendly. Bathrooms are clean, gym is tidy. The only thing is the pool. I don't know how often they clean it but there's hair and grim floating in it. It's pretty gross. I hope they can clean it more often and enforce a swim cap policy. read more

My opinion: Believe the reviews that are critical of this Y and the great majority of people who work at the South Pasadena, San Marino YMCA. I was surprised there were as many "not good" evals. The employees are nice to people they like and are kiss a__ es to their supervisors. Most seem to work at the Y for their own ego and arrogance issues and are pleased to make members feel like they are suspect or annoyances. The supervisors are truly rude, two faced, & do little to nothing except act suspicious of members who express their opinion (those members become "the enemy" - a threat to their job security. The group classes are typically taught by arrogant and intolerant. If you decide to work out there, avoid contact (even eye contact) with the staff. It's not worth trying to figure out what the deal is or why they are unresponsive to member concerns. In many ways, they aren't just rude and threatened by anything or person who dares to express their feelings about having been treated like kerrr-rap. SP & SM YMCA, PLEASE read this and improve or remove and replace many (or most) of the staff and group exercise teachers because fewer than 5 people who work there are pleasant and behave as represented by the written standards of goodness that people expect from the YMCA. This Y could be so much better. As it is now, a member survives by expressing nothing, being unnoticeable. Come on folks, you can do better than you're doing. Think about it: for every complaint, others just leave in disgust. What is that opinion box for? Ultimately, it seems to be to identify those that may be bothersome (ooohhh trouble) to you. Think please, the Y is supposed to be about good things, not self-interested management and staff protecting their positions. I Love this gym! The staff is so helpful and personable. Cynthia and Denise are AWESOME!!! These two trainers keep me on track and keep me motivated. They encourage me to live a healthy lifestyle by giving me tips on nutrition and healthy eating habits. I never have a problem with getting on a machine in the mid morning. Pilates and Spinning classes are great. Very family orientated too.... read more

I really enjoy this YMCA. They have plentiful classes, nice rooms for yoga/pilates, a well-lit spinning room. They offer far more than the Santa Anita Family YMCA and it is much larger (but not as large as the Downtown one), They allow people from other YMCAs to visit several times a month (I think it was 3 times a month?) free of charge, unlike the Downtown facility that charges $5 to members of non-partnering YCMAs. I would have signed up for this facility directly if it weren't so much further away. The neighborhood is charming, parking is horrible but there is plenty of street parking. It's a no-nonsense kind of place with plenty of options for your workout needs. read more
