Food: Peking duck - pretty standard fare, can't complain. Duck meat is juicy with a nice crispy skin. The wrappers were pretty thin but hold up against the meat, veges and sauce. Sweet and sour pork - crispy deep fried pork chunks in a sweet and tangy sauce. Lettuce wraps - fresh lettuce with good savory minced meat and veges. Add some sweet sauce and it's a delicious dish. Baked BBQ pork bun was very light & puffy. The interior was very tasty: rich & meaty, with a nice crisp exterior. Century egg pork porridge had a light flavour & was quite smooth. It was huge. Glutinous rice with preserved meat was the first time I'd seen this dish come unwrapped. It was so so. Har gao was decent. Siu mai was pretty good: plump & juicy. Steamed bean curd roll had very bouncy mushroom. It was very light tasting. Custard bun was pretty good: light & tasty, but the first time the custard did not flow. You know you are in for an experience when the waitress provides you with a tub and a pot of hot water to wash your utensils/bowls/plate as you sit down. That pretty much set the tone for the rest of the meal. Food is decent, good portions for the price. Service was "wash your own utensils" level. My fam dined here on a weekday evening after visiting Scarborough Grace Hospital nearby. The parking lot was quite empty and the resto was even emptier. We ordered a combo set and made a couple of dish substitutions. The fish belly and tofu stone pot was very good. The crispy chicken excellent. Bak choy w/ assorted shrooms was good as well. The sweet n' sour pork was just ok imo. Enough crispiness but meat to fat ratio was off in each piece. Also the pineapple presentation was pretty but I'd rather they leave that off the plate and give us more sns pork with the remaining dish real estate. Stir fried beef w/ gai lan in satay sauce was mid. The gai lan was cooked well. The beef was on the tougher side and the satay sauce they used wasn't actually satay. It was too oily and the amount of actual satay used was negligible. This dish is a strong pass. Our combo meal was originally supposed to come w/ char siu but we subbed it out for one of the above mentioned dishes. After seeing a plate of it arrive at another table I felt regretful that we did not order it. It looked good! There was a strange odor permeating throughout the resto when we dined there. 3.5 STARS My little family woke up super early on a Saturday morning and decided to go dimsum. We originally wanted to go to another dimsum place, but it was booked for an event that morning. Hungry, we opted for the nearest one close by and chose crown jewel. The restaurant wasn't very big, but you can tell regulars come here often for dimsum; as the place was packed. There were two managers running the floor and one of them who got us a table was very nice and attentive. We ordered our food by checking off the menu list of dimsum. The menu isn't extensive as other places, but they have essential classic items when you get that dimsum craving. The dimsum dishes we ordered were hit or miss. Most notable mentions were the har gow, the chiu chow style dumplings, the steam shrimp rolls, and the siu mai. Everything else I got either had too little filling, too much dough, or flavor wise wasn't there. Thus my review is quite limited.* Their XLB's wrapper's bottom half was thin but very thick/doughy around the top. The food here is fantastic. The service is great too. It's one of my grandma's fav places so we take it seriously. We've been here for several large family dinners and the meals have always been fantastic. The peking duck is always great. the lobster is good. Everything is good. I come here every so often for a family dinner, and it's a very solid restaurant. Nothing flashy or new, but each dish is prepared well. However, I had a particularly great experience recently where I tried their Lamb Brisket Stew that had the most tender Lamb brisket, crispy water chestnuts, savory tofu skins and an abundance of veggies. Came here on a Monday night and it wasn't too crowded. From what I remember here, I really liked how they served the peking duck. The presentation was very pretty and I like how they had cucumbers as well as the usual scallions. The reason for the 3 stars is the number of flies flying around was definitely concerning. I feel like every 5 minutes, someone at my table was shooing away a fly from the food. Now, if the flies are in the dining room, I don't even want to imagine the kitchen! The flavors were there at this place but those flies definitely are an issue that needs to be addressed. Came here for late afternoon dim sum. The interior decor is a bit dated, but feels well-lit and spacious. The dim sum was pretty tasty, with decent portions for the price, with equivalent quality but lower prices than other high-end dim sum places. They even have an early bird special where all dim sum is the price of a small item weekdays before 11 am. My personal favourite was their baked Crown Jewel BBQ Pork Buns, each one was literally as big as my fist and super fluffy, with lots of tasty cha siu pork on the inside. Service was friendly and attentive. Will definitely come back for more dim sum and perhaps to check out their dinner menu. read more

Environment: Been here many times and the servers remember my grandparents lol. Very bright and spacious with lots of big tables for huge parties. They can even section the area for special events too. The background music already made this review lose a star: in the past, they played background music or something simple. Crown Jewel Fine Dining offers a decent selection at competitive prices: S for $3.50, M for $4.50, and L for $5.50, but on non-holidays if you order before 11am, S-L dishes will be $3.50. Where Crown differs is the size of their dim sum. Their steamed shrimp dumpling har gow (L) and steamed shrimp & pork dumpling siu mai (L), are huge and about 50% larger than other restaurants while the taste is still relatively consistent. Some dumplings could use more seasoning. The steamed vegetable dumpling (L) is a great vegetarian option containing snow pea shoots and prince mushroom slivers, but desperately needs salt. Similarly, the seafood dumpling in soup (L) is fairly bland despite containing chunky portions of various seafood and mushroom. I'm glad restaurants are starting to offer more vegetarian options. A pumpkin congee with chestnut and corn (L) seems to grace most menus and truthfully is quite delicious. At Crown, they leave some pumpkin pieces strewn throughout the congee so it ends up having more texture and bite. The chestnuts also make the congee savoury. We ordered the $400 set dinner and added a "larger" sized sweet/sour pork. All the dishes served were fresh, tasty and prepared well. I'm not going to break down the meal by dish because Both myself and my guests found every single dish was quite good and tasty. We did not find anything overly salty, oily, over/undercooked. The quality of the ingredients was good too. Service from all the staff was very attentive and polite. When we could not eat fast enough, the staff moved the food from the larger plates into smaller ones. The changed our plates many times and also served us the soup/rice. Seating was comfortable. The atmosphere was very good and we did not feel rushed despite us being the only table remaining at the end of the night. I'm actually surprised by the Yelp ratings of this place. Loved the slight changes to traditional dim sum dishes. I hardly venture out of the Richmond Hill/Markham for dim sum but here I am for a family dim sum brunch. Did not have any high hopes here, as there wasn't line up out the door and found parking very easily on a Mother's Day Sunday, which is like winning the parking lot lottery! But they actually made me go WOW that's neat! Char Siu bao (roasted BBQ pork bun) - served on a husk boat, this delicate light bun already made everyone say, this is the char Siu bao?! The bun is the lightest and fluffiest bun I've seen/had for dim sum not that tradition bread at all, which compares as dry and heavy to this. The meat ratio to sweet sauce is in great portion and makes this bun a must try. Taro puff was shaped into a bird nest, topped with a peeled boiled quail egg, it had lots of minced pork and mashed taro inside. Har Gow- a favorite, it was filled with lots of plump shrimp, no fillers here. Rice wrapper was steamed well but had a nice chew to it. BBQ pork baked pastry was filled with lots of meat in a very flaky pie crust based wrapper, these would be great reheated later unlike most dim sum dishes. We ordered a few items to try, most of them were well made with high quality ingredients and nicely plated. I like the fact that we didn't have to wait for a table on a late Saturday morning. Probably because other restaurants have deals for ordering before 11:00am. Not here. So, price conscious Chinese would come here out of necessity or convenience. We were the latter camp. The food was average and in my opinion slightly over priced. my friend took me here because this place os her family's favourite restaurant for dim sum and I can see why. we went early on a weekday for their special: 3.10$ any dish before 11am if paid by cash. 99.9% of the food we ordered were amazing! My favourite has got to be their own special bbq bun - a perfect balance of sweet and savoury, with a nice buttery ending from the dough. Custard buns were hot and fresh. Buttery and sweet and the filling had a texture when you bit into it which I enjoyed. Their fried squid tentacles were not the typical fried ones you normally see - they look like they've been grilled and they were thick ones with 100% deliciousness. Sui Mai's were juicy and full of shrimps and pork - you can't go wrong here. I also really liked their steam roll with dried shredded pork - the peanut sauce that came with this dish really made it stand out I didn't like the steamed shrimp rolls because it was not the usualy taste that i expected. Most disappointing was seafood, the 'fresh' fish was not (no tank in restaurant is a giveway). The promised 4lb lobster that we were marketed did not appear and we were given subpar substitution. Went here for my kids first birthday party. We ordered a few dishes including the Peking duck. My updated review for this place has gone down. I would think this place will slowly deteriorate into nothingness and get replaced by something else unless they improve the value of their restaurant food and service. For one they need to hire more English capable staff. Although they are more patient than other cheaper places it still gets very difficult to communicate with them and you just end up giving up when something sounds. I tried to order the Peking duck one way in the hopes that at least we'd get more meat on the first course. Unfortunately that experiment didn't pan out. I noticed a large chunk of the duck was being taken away. Rather than waste it I just spent a few dollars more to get the second course even if I am not too fond of the second course. The duck is still good though. I ordered the stuffed crab claws. They're pretty pricey at $6 each. It was good the first time I tried it a while back and I was hoping to indulge myself with it. Unfortunately this time around it had significantly less crab meat and more shrimp paste. We also ordered a seafood soup dish. It was a tad bit too salty for almost everyone on the table though. Barely tasted the seafood because the salt was overpowering it. Finally we also ordered the Cantonese wedding noodles. Though it wasn't as good as I expected it to be. Something about it was lacklustre. Fortunately there was some left over duck to make it a bit more tolerable. On its saving grace they gave us some complementary dessert which wasn't too bad. At least it wasn't red bean. Tapioca taro soup, sesame balls with green tea paste and lychee jello with goji berries. I usually come to this place with my family and the service is typically better than your standard Chinese restaurant. This time the service was abysmal. From the moment we were seated the table was not cleaned or properly set up. We didn't even have enough tea cups for our party. The food was extremely sub par and it was extremely difficult to flag down any members of the staff. Couldn't even flag anyone down to pay. The service here is terrible unless you come in a large group. On top of it, a server brought the manager to speak to us over the amount tipped. As some other Yelpers here mentioned, you ought to make a reservation before heading down. The problem I found with this place, the food was just decent, despite the prices. The taste relative to the price isn't there for me. The service was pretty good though, I'll give em' that. They're often checking up to clear the the tables of empty trays, and they are especially good on filling up your water for tea, which is great! When it comes to dim sum, one of my biggest head-scratchers is the the incompetence in filling up water and I go thirsty. This place will keep you teased, no joke. By the way, morning special before 11am with non-special dishes just under $3 a piece. Order before then, you'll be good. Love the checklist ordering that they have here. It guarantees that you can get what you want as long as it's on the list. No need to rush the carts. From what my Canadian aunt tells me, there is only one dimsum place in the area that does the carts while everyone else does the checklist. Must gets: har gow, and the house special buns. The shrimp were fresh and large. The dumpling was the size of my one years old's fist. We got 4 baskets of them. The buns were loved by the kids.
