They have a great Dim Sum experience however the regular menu doesn't have anything special that any other neighborhood place would have. I have been coming here over 20 years, last nights meal was a waste of money.I will continue to patronize for dim sum but will no longer eat here for anything else. While visiting family here in NJ, we decided we were all craving Chinese food. After doing extensive research, we discovered there wasn't anything that had stellar reviews, but Crown Palace looked like our best option. I cannot begin to tell you how wonderful a decision this turned out to be. It was a snowy, cold night and the restaurant (a little confusing to find but not too bad) wasn't full. It's a lovely place with decor that reminds me of my favorite restaurants in Hong Kong. The minute we arrived the service was amazing - very accommodating and welcoming. Hot tea and the best (housemade) noodles were whisked to the table, and no one hovered over us while we decided on the menu. We ended up getting the Family Dinner, which was a very wise decision. For the three of us, we had Hunan Shrimp, Roast Pork with Beansprouts, and substituted Chicken Mei Fun Noodles for Chicken Chow Fun. Two of us opted for wonton soup, while one had the egg drop, which were all excellent. The meal comes with a choice of an appetizer, too, so two had eggrolls and I had the dim sum option, which was one piece of shumai and was also very good. Our entree choices were great, with the Chow Fun being (in my opinion) the best. From presentation to portions, everything was perfect and the tastes were all delicious. We had more than enough for the three of us and had leftovers as well, which is always nice. They even packed them beautifully. And of course, the Family Dinner menu comes with ice cream, which looked and tasted so good - and the jello and pineapple was an appreciated surprise touch. Ah.....dim sum. For much of my youth my family would gather on weekends for dim sum, so often that I honestly got bored of it. Now I can count on my hand the number of times I've eaten dim sum the past several years. So it was with much interest I tried out the dim sum service at Crown Palace after hearing some excellent feedback from my sister. In the hierarchy of dim sum, the shrimp dumpling ("Har Gow" is the butchered english translation) sits on the top tier along with the Siu Mai (a ground pork and shrimp dumpling). No dim sum restaurant can honestly get by with even average versions of these dishes. The Har Gow's most distinct and most crucial criteria is the delicate rice flour skin. It should be thin and translucent but also sturdy enough to cradle the shrimp filling. The shrimp filling should be a proper whole shrimp with a piece of water chestnut for added crunch. Crown Palace's version was spot on and a must try for dim sum service! Note that these can degrade quickly (the skin gets noticeably sticky), so it's best to get the first batch out of the kitchen. For Siu Mai it's all about the filling, and Crown Palace's Siu Mai minced pork filling was a perfect fatty blend and full of flavor. The skin for Siu Mai is similar to a wonton skin, and it was smooth and silky. The remainder of our dim sum dishes were: - BBQ Roast Pork Bun (baked): Perfect slider sized buns filled with actual BBQ shredded roast pork instead of chunks of fat and sinew. Enjoyable sweet glaze on top too. - Beef filled rice noodle rolls: Very good; most importantly with a shiny and silken noodle skin. - Bok Choy: Generous amounts of diced garlic imparted a lot of flavor. A little oily though. - Crab claw ball: Excellent! Just like how I remember it tasting in my youth; super flavorful and juicy. - Glutinous sticky rice: Our lone poor dish. Bland and needing an extra splash of soy sauce to enhance it's flavor. We ended our meal with the shredded pork pan fried thin noodle. The egg noodles were pan fried expertly and remained ultra crispy despite being coated in a thick and rich flavorful gravy which is an excellent example of high-heat wok cooking The pieces of pork were juicy and had a pleasant sweetness. I have eaten here many times over many years. Sometimes the service is uneven and the prices are a little high, but it deserves far better reviews than it has sometimes had. Overall, though, it's worth coming here, especially for weekend dim sum brunch. This is not a chow mein / chop suey joint, but an upscale authentic Chinese eatery. The high percentage of Asian clientele is a clue that they're doing it right. I just got back from Sunday brunch and it was very enjoyable. They were really on their game. The kitchen was cranking out a great variety of dishes that came around on carts, hot and fresh. There were the usual shrimp and pork staples, as well as fish balls, shrimp balls (really good), crab claws, octopus, fried squid, beef tripe with winter melon (don't be scared- try it), sticky rice with tiny shrimp, eggplant , stuffed pepper, and many others. The servers may not all speak English well, but that's just part of the charm for me. Come early to avoid waiting for a table, come hungry, order a lot, take home leftovers. If you want dim sum on the weekends this place is packed and the parking lot gets full fast. I'd suggest coming her before noon. Also because it's super busy the carts often run out of a specific dish you want so you have to be very diligent when you see the cart come out that has what you want. The dim sum is alright only really good when you have a craving. Nothing compared to nyc but hey it's close to home. Sometimes you may have to flag down one of the waiters if you want a noodle dish or larger cooked dish. My favorite is he wonton noodle soup super worth the price. Disappointing. Very Disappointing. Crown Palace came recommended from a co-worker . This was some time ago but we finally were in the area to give it a try. Pork Fried rice and Yang chow rice ( $17.95 !) were bland and sparse in ingredients. General's chicken was not crispy and drowned in sauce . Ribs and fried dumpling were tasty but they were the exception. Also taken in account were the high prices . Very high prices. Much higher than a typical Chinese restaurant. read more

Food and service is normally very good. I've had dinner with my family here on numerous occasions and it was always very good, especially the dim sum. But I would never ever order from here again on a holiday.. in this case Mother's Day!! I ordered our food at 11:45am. When I arrived at the restaurant to pick up our food at 12:30pm, they were telling patrons that they were running 1hr behind. After an hour and a half, I asked for them to check my order and they just said that it wasn't ready. After 1hr 45mins, I knew that they were giving other people their food who had ordered after me. I asked them again to check my order, and they still said it wasn't ready. At 2hours, I had to ask the manager to check my order where they said it would still be another 5-10mins. Finally when my food came out at 2hrs 10mins, they acted like I should've felt fortunate to receive my order. I had my wife check to ensure that our order was all there, with the exception of my bubble tea.. which they eventually made. I told the girls behind the counter that they shouldn't lie to customers that were still calling in. They were still telling customers that the wait was only 1hr when it was actually over two hours for me. read more

I gave one star and was being generous. I ordered Singapore noodles which was dry and flavorless after requesting extra curry sauce. They forgot the curry sauce. In addition, I ordered a small order of boneless ribs which were dry as well. My wife had Grand Mariner shrimp... she said it wad ok but had better... my total bill was 58$ and change... waste of money..this was takeout but we were equally disappointed when we last ate in person... not going back... hopefully can find a decent Chinese restaurant some day in the blue state. read more

I've coming here for years just for the dim sum on weekends. It's classic style where they bring out food on carts. If you haven't been before it can be a little intimidating because most of the staff isn't fluent in English but feel free to ask questions and/or point to what you want-- they are very friendly as long as you're nice to them as well. There's a cute garden behind the restaurant that you can see from the back room, or you can take a quick stroll through it yourself. As I've only been here for dim sum I can't speak for the rest of their menu, but in my opinion it's one of the best Chinese/dim sum spots it's in the area. read more

A real disappointment - Had dim sum at Crown Palace last Saturday and ordered sticky rice bowl, salty & pepper calamari, shrimp dumpling, etc. The sticky rice was cold and frozen inside. Fried squid was luke warm and oil soaked, not freshly made. The shrimp dumpling is very good though, hence the one star. The other dishes are just norm dim sum quality. Will stop going to this place. Unfortunately, I am changing my review rating based on our most recent experience. Please see my other hundreds of reviews to see that I don't take reviews lightly. Yes it was a Sunday, and yes it was Mother's Day. So yes we expected it to be busy and without any parking. Fine, that's not the reason for the change in rating to a 2 star. The reason was the horrible service. We had reservations and "luckily" were seated about a half hour *after* our reservation time. (It was so crowded I expected to wait an hour even with a reservation). But when seated we did not see our waiter, no one came to our table to greet us or offer water or anything. We asked several times for a waiter and multiple times other servers said he was coming. We saw another server come and attend to the 3 tables around us but just ignored us. After about 30 minutes we managed to get his attention and asked for water and place a few orders from the main menu. He was rude and abrupt, as if we were wasting his time. Was it because of a language barrier? Perhaps, but that's no excuse, when my parents are also Asian, not originally from the US, yet still managed to learn to be polite in English. Some dimsum carts did come and the food we got was good (thus 2 stars instead of 1). But in one instance we asked for more steamed buns if any and the woman said she'll come back. During the course of the meal the woman with the cart came back 4 times but each time she said the steamed buns were still cooking "in the kitchen" when other tables had gotten them. Needless to say, we *never* got the steamed buns. Ok back to the main server. So 30 min after sitting down we got his attention and put some orders in. One in our party due to dietary restrictions just wanted plain steamed white rice, probably by far the easiest order in an Asian restaurant. Well, the server forgot to put the orders in, and when he came around again we asked him again and so he put them in again. Eventually he came and put the dishes, including the white rice, on a different table!!! A few on the other table starting eating them then said they didn't order it, realizing it was our order. They offered it to us, but because they already dug in we said no. So again again again we had to track our server down and put the orders in again!! 3rd time!!! And he was rude. "What you want?!?!" what you want?!" then when another person from another table asked him something, he said, "sit down!!" So when all was said and done we finally got the easy order of plain steamed white rice ONE AND A HALF HOURS after sitting down. again see my other reviews to see i don't complain this much and usually give the benefit of the doubt. Too bad, because the few dumplings we got were good, so kudos to the chef who is the only reason for the 2 stars, but the rudeness and ineptitude of our server warrants this a restaurant where I do not want to eat again nor will I recommend to anyone else. read more

Crown Palace: a clean beautifully landscaped Chinese restaurant in Marlboro, NJ. Food is excellent, so is the service. We ordered off the set menu for a late afternoon lunch. We went to pay our respects or bai san and have lunch afterwards. Grief can make you hungry. We had a group of 8, most of them older people who wanted real Cantonese style cooking. Pro tip: I highly recommend ordering off set menus, if you want more authentic Chinese food and have a big group of people. The set menu was for 8 people and included: Cantonese stir-fried lobster, fried walnuts with mayo shrimp, a whole crispy Cantonese-style chicken with lemon, shiitake mushrooms with lettuce, fried white fish, peppered flank steak with sweet peppers, sweet and sour fried pork chops, tofu and watercress soup, sautéed pea shoots. Dessert: was standard. Fresh orange slices and sweet red bean soup. We stuffed ourselves silly and still had leftovers. The best dishes were the light crispy battered white fish, the crunchy crispy Cantonese style chicken with fresh lemon slices, the tender sautéed pea shoots with a light white sauce and the tender juicy peppered flank steak. The fried walnuts were delicious and the shrimp was acceptable. All my relatives were happy with the meal. Outside the restaurant is a man-made waterfall, reflecting pond and mini cottage. Nice ambiance compared to other Chinese restaurants. There is a fish tank inside the dining area and a small Chinese garden out in the back which the kids enjoyed. The food is ok. I would rate it 3.5 but upped by .5 for the ambiance, which is rare for Chinese restaurants. Food: we had the chicken with string beans ( very tasty), lamb chops (a bit dry but we had asked for sauce on the side ), shrimp with toasted garlic (bei feng style) which was very good and different, HK style wonton noodle soup (the kids devoured this) and spinach. The waiter misheard us when we ordered "tong choi", a different type of vegetable. We kept the spinach instead of having to wait for them to replace the dish. We haven't been here for dinner in a long time. It seems that their dinner clientele is mostly non -Asians based on the other patrons and table being set with forks instead of chopsticks. However, upon seating, the waitstaff very quickly replaced our forks with chopsticks (except for my youngest daughter who held on to her fork for dear life and would not let him take her fork!). The waitstaff also very quickly brought out a pot of tea. The menu has your standard Chinese American food as well as authentic Chinese food. We've been here for dim sum many times too and we would rather drive an extra 15 minutes to come here instead of going to Sunny Palace, which is much closer to us. read more

I find 2 stars suitable for this restaurant. I should specify this rating is based on my experience during Sunday dim sum service. After 5 requests and 15 minutes waiting for a diet soda, I had to physically get up and go to the bar and get it myself. There was one man responsible for all the drinks and food orders in the main dining room, yet 4 women seating people. This is not their first day serving dim sum; they should have more efficient staffing. The carts for dim sum are completely disorganized. The choices are limited, uninteresting, and not tasty. So...all things considered, the birthday dinner went pretty well. But there were a few down sides, such as having to wait forever for our food to come and that a couple of dishes were a bit salty. We had way too much food that night because we decided to try many dishes from their banquet menu, including seafood soup, lobster, shrimps, fish, sea cucumber, conch, scallops, beef, chicken, peking duck, etc etc. One dish that I would particularly highlight here is the sea cucumber. I was NEVER a fan of sea cucumber, but they make it so well here and the quality was decent as well; I was very surprised! Another thing that I want to bring to everyone's attention is that unlike many other Chinese restaurants, this place is NOT BYOB. They charge a $12/BOTTLE service fee if you want to bring/have your own wine. So, we just bought from their bar instead. The parking lot here is too small and no parking for customers. I made a reservation for a table for 4 and I still had to wait to be seated. The service here is horrible and the guy forgot our water twice! They do not have enough push carts with the Dim Sum. This is pretty sad for a Dim Sum restaurant. They used to have good food but it's gone downhill fast. Ordered four items for takeout last weekend and all were awful. The egg drop soup had almost no egg, so it was practically all broth. The beef with broccoli had soggy broccoli and little taste. The General Tso's Chicken was mainly breading and very little chicken. And worst of all, the Crab Rangoon was literally 95-percent dough shell with almost nothing inside. I was so dumfounded that I returned the Rangoon. The man at the counter, who appeared to be the owner or manager, had a lousy attitude from the start. I presented him with three uneaten pieces in a container so he could see for himself. He said, "Rangoon is dough." I said not to such an extent. When I asked him to look inside what I brought, he refused. He angrily said, "What do you want me to do about it?" Then he offered me back $5 of the $9 I paid for it, claiming I ate half of it. I said I did so to see if any of the pieces had more inside. After arguing with me further, he finally begrudgingly refunded my $9. After the stark drop in quality, and especially the man's awful response, I'm never going back. read more

Had gone there with my friend. They served us the typical crispy fried noodles. I'm Asian and I'm use to the cabbage and peanuts. They were very sweet and gave us all three. For lunch there's the authentic Chinese menu and the American menu. We had ordered the shredded chicken in thin pan fried noodles along with beef chow fun: dry version. Yes, there's two styles of beef chow fun dry or wet. Knowing my friend is not used to it wet, we stuck with the dry. All were delicious. Total cost from soup to nuts: $13.80. Not a bad lunch deal. My last (2) experiences at this location were take out orders. Take out order # 1: ordered fried shrimp and they prepared shrimp toast ( which i had no interest in). Take our order # 2: the rice that came with the shrimp order was VERY loosely packed in the container resulting in a smaller portion. The dim sum was extremely salty. The egg roll was cold and all the rest of the food was just room temperature. Have been a customer here for 30 years and the food experience seems to be going downhill.... After telling my wife how my coworkers rant about the food here, we decided to swing by for dinner. It was quite an experience. It was dark out and snowing lightly outside as we were seated by the window. The place is immaculate and the service here is too notch. We were give duck sauce sauce and noodles with a pot of tea, just how I remember getting Chinese food as a kid. We ordered 2 food platters for 2 as there was 4 of us. There was so much food! All of it was great! I didn't know what u was eating but it was excellent, clearly freshly made to order. My only complaint was the price. It was well over $100 for 4 people. We didn't even have sodas or alcohol, just water. Although I really enjoyed the food and service, I didn't 100 dollar enjoy it. So if you want to check this place out, and I strongly recommend you do, just bring your significant other and leave the kids at home.
