rows of vines in a vineyard

Jen was absolutely fantastic. Highly recommend the tour and the red wine was really yummy.

Drove up from Orange County for a long birthday weekend in St. Ynez and the highlight of the weekend was our visit to Crown Point Vineyards. From the moment we were welcomed to the vineyard, every detail of our visit was absolute perfection! Jen did a fabulous job in showing us the vineyard, explaining the winemaking process, and highlighting the complexity of the wines we tasted. The breathtaking views, exquisite wines, and state-of-the-art pristine winemaking facility made a visit to Crown Point truly a memorable experience!

It was the first of five tastings we did during our weekend in town, and the wines were, admittedly, the least impressive. They went down easy, though, and we had a pleasant visit. We checked into our hotel on Friday around 5:30 and quickly realized that all the wineries on our list were closed. We asked the receptionist where we might be able to do a tasting, and she said Carhartt was our best bet. It was quite open when we walked in, almost intimidatingly so, the live music loud as we rounded the sidewalk outside the enclosed patio. Jack welcomed us into the tasting room and suggested we do a vibe check on the patio before deciding where to sit. We peeked outside and it seemed fun in a way we weren't looking for, a bit of a party atmosphere with a live band and a lot of people. We took our seats in the quieter tasting room, where we were able to enjoy the music from a distance while we drank some wine. We both did the house tasting, which came with five pours of Carhartt wines: the 2024 Top Branch, the 2022 Sin Nada, the 2022 Sangiovese, the 2022 Rebel Roan, and the 2020 Northerly. Jack also gave us a taste of the 2021 Graciano. They were all nice wines, but we particularly liked the Sin Nada, the Sangiovese, and the Graciano, and took home two bottles of each, getting one $25 tasting fee waived with each purchase of three bottles. Jack was a great host, and he told us all about the wines and winery as we went along. (He pre-empted our first question, saying that yes, they were the same Carhartts as the Carhartt clothing label, but not the same company. I guess just the classic generational wealth to winemaking pipeline.) It was a helpful introduction to both the Carhartt wines and Los Olivos, and Jack was good company. I said Carhartt was the least impressive of the wineries we visited, but it's also worth noting that it had the lowest price point. Carhartt isn't gunning for Robert Parker ratings. The wines are accessible and tasty, and I have a feeling we'll go through our bottles very fast.

Their website and phone recording advertised extended hours until 8:00 PM on Fridays through Sundays, along with food trucks. Since we were driving from Orange County and planned to arrive around 2:30 PM, those extended hours were a major factor in our decision to book a room that cost over $600. Before leaving, we spent the entire morning trying to reach someone to confirm the hours and food truck schedule. Despite multiple calls and voicemails, no one answered until approximately 12:30 PM. When we finally spoke with someone, we were told the winery actually closed at 5:00 PM, with last call at 4:00 PM, and there were no food trucks scheduled. At that point, we explained that we would not have booked the trip had the information been accurately advertised. We asked why it had taken so long for anyone to answer or return our calls, and the customer service manager simply said he didn't know. We requested a full refund due to the misleading information and were told we would receive a call back by 2:00 PM. That callback never came. While we were already driving, I had my fiancé check my email and discovered that our reservation had simply been canceled without any phone call, explanation, or follow-up from management. The most disappointing part wasn't just the inaccurate advertising, it was the complete lack of communication and customer service. Multiple unanswered calls, unreturned voicemails, no follow-up as promised, and ultimately canceling our reservation without speaking to us made for a very frustrating experience. We were looking forward to celebrating our anniversary at what appeared to be a beautiful winery, but unfortunately the experience before we even arrived was enough to leave a very negative impression.

From the moment we arrived, Ms. Susan set the tone. She welcomed us with warmth, guided us through the wines with passion and knowledge, and made us feel like honored guests rather than visitors. Her care elevated our entire experience. We enjoyed a beautiful charcuterie lunch by the pond, surrounded by serene scenery and great company. The wines paired perfectly: bold, elegant Cabernet Sauvignons full of dark fruit and spice, and a crisp, refreshing Sauvignon Blanc that lit up our tasting. Every glass told the story of the Happy Canyon terroir and the Grassini family's dedication to sustainable, hands-on winemaking. With awards like Best Winery & Best Tasting Room (Santa Barbara Independent, seven years running) and recognition as the Santa Barbara Wine Auction's Honorary Winery, it's no wonder Grassini has become such a celebrated name. But beyond the accolades, what makes it truly special is the feeling--connection, legacy, and service that makes you want to come back again and again. If you're in Santa Barbara, make time for Grassini. Sit by the pond, share a board with friends, sip the wines, and let Susan guide you--you'll leave with both bottles and memories to savor.

Good pours and all the wines were low alcohol. They try and make them as natural as possible and are smaller batches than bigger wineries and labels. Friendly service as well. My only critique are the stools, they were really uncomfortable so sitting there for the whole tasting was not fun. We purchased one bottle and could have maybe purchased a couple others but we opted not to. I will also mention that there was a slight push to try and buy bottles at the end. Stopping short of saying "you should buy some bottles" but a lot of "nudges" and "hints" about buying bottles. We would definitely come back to try other pours.

We were so impressed by the wine that we even joined their wine club. I can't wait to receive the first shipment! I'm also already planning our next visit to this tasting room, which is located in an awesome one road town. Located across the street from The Alamo Motel, where we stayed for the weekend, so we just walked across the street for our tasting. It really doesn't get much better than that! I definitely suggest making a trip to this charming wine tasting room and finding out for yourself what a treasure it is.

Customer service was still great, but I noticed a few changes that took away from the experience for us personally. I do like that the tastings are no longer in the plastic tubes, although the tubes did feel like they held a little more wine. What we didn't enjoy was that when multiple people ordered the same tastings, they were placed into the same shared glass/container. In our party of four, three of us had the same six tastings and had to share. I appreciated the bow on the glass showing the pours, but I preferred the previous setup where everyone had their own individual tastings. It may seem small, and thankfully our group was fine sharing, but it made the experience feel less personal and honestly made us less interested in doing tastings again on future visits. Some people also may not feel comfortable sharing containers or touching the same glass. Nothing terrible at all, just some feedback from longtime visitors who loved how it used to be. On this visit we actually ended up ordering a bottle afterward instead, and moving forward we'll probably just continue doing that rather than the tastings.
