This place is great. Super cheap haircuts, fun environment, and I feel happy that I am contributing to the education of young barbers. There are a couple of downsides, but honestly they are to be expected. 1. It takes a long time for them to cut your hair. Again, this should be expected as they are learning, but make sure you plan accordingly. 2. Sometimes it is difficult to get the barber to understand the type of haircut you want. In that case speak to the main teacher (don't know his name but look for a tall African-American dude with a beard). He is super friendly and helpful. On a whim, I decided to get the kids haircut at Cru. I messaged for an appointment and was told the store hours & to just come in. I brought the boys in on a weekday at 5pm. Ricky introduced himself as the night manager and asked a few Qs on how I wanted their hair cut, etc. (I didn't opt for the Yelp check-in for a free cut since they are charging $5.) They both were assigned stylists and went to their respective chairs. I'm only going to review one of the stylists because I understand this is a learning academy and don't want anyone to hold anything against the one who is still finding his way. Chris was assigned to my younger son who sat nervously in his booster. Chris routinely checked in if I liked the length and how I wanted the shape. It took about an hour but the fade was the smoothest I've ever seen. So many details and precision to his cut! My lil man didn't want to shower and ruin his haircut; lol. My older son...as noted in other reviews, haircuts in general take longer than normal salons but I got worried when his stylist came over and spoke to Chris. Chris went over to the other chair and gave a few tips of the trade from what I could gather across the room. After an hour I got smoothies with my younger one and came back to more stylists around my older son's chair. Uh oh. 30 mins later he came out with an ok haircut and a slightly choppy fade. But I knew this walking in that it was a possibility. I still respect the stylist. I know you have to start from somewhere & hone your skills. My older son was excited to talk CoD with his stylist & was pumped when we left...and that meant more to me than his cut. Thank you for not treating him like a kid. Xoxo I'm not sure the turnaround & how long stylists stay at Cru but I highly recommend Chris. His skill set & abilities deserve to be noted. Will definitely snag an appointment with him in the future! Covid note: Everyone wore masks inside unless they were drinking. I asked both stylists before removing my kids' masks so they could properly get around the ears. Parent note: this isn't one of those places that have plastic airplanes for your kid to sit in. There's no play area or catering to fidgety kids. It's a very positive environment but not censored for kids. The owner SETH is rude , ill mannered and lacks emotional control!! He is also a liar!! I was a repeat PAYING customer and came in one day to use the free cut coupon and my child got a butchered haircut because the student (manny) was upset he wasn't getting paid. Both of my boys hair lines were messed up and tried to cover it up with enhancement spray!!! In addition several of the students were using inappropriate language and were making fun of my children along with complaining because they didn't want to do the work. I called to speak to the supervisor on duty (Brad) and was told he wasn't available, so I spoke to the person in charge (SETH) frustrated in hopes of a resolve and not only did he get hostile with me but he interrupted me and called me all kinds of liars! Upon going back to the institute after the horrible phone call, He immediately walked up on me without any conversation yelling/raising his voice, called me a liar, put his fingers in my face, called the police and told my three children that their mother was going to jail today. Told me I was trespassing and that I wasn't welcomed and that he was going to send me to jail! I waited for the officers to arrive....Upon the police's arrival they were in awe and disbelief of the horrible haircut my son received. After the lies that the owner decided to tell, the police reviewed the camera footage and were able to verify my story. In the end, the owner (SETH) refused to fix my son's hair. On top of that, the supervisor (BRAD) that was there during this botched hair cut totally ignored me as if he didn't know who I or my children were . My son got made fun of at school and his picture day was ruined!! CRU INSTITUTE needs new ownership and management and I will be contacting the BBB and the licensing department. My family and I were treated like trash without any questions, conversation, concern, or resolve. read more

Spectacular people, place, and haircut. I didn't catch his name for sure but I think Daniel cut my hair and he was absolutely amazing, stayed after closing for me and was willing to cut my hair even after everybody had left. I think the instructor's name was Mr. Brett but he was amazing as well. Gave me all sorts of tips and advice for my hair and my different styles. I got an appointment to cut and shape my long hair. This is a school so things take longer but it was well worth it just for the kind and warm experience. I've visited cosmetology schools before but this one was very friendly and fun while still maintaining good learning and discipline. In particular, the teacher in charge is so amazing! Stopped in here again because I needed a cut for Thanksgiving holiday. This place is close and convenient, especially in the shopping center with Ace hardware, Vons and Rite Aid. So there's plenty of parking and your friend can shop while you get your haircut. This is a no nonsense barbering and styling school. Met Bobby outside catching a smoke, and it was a good thing. While we were chatting a woman tripped and fell in the parking lot, and he wasted no time going to assist her. She was okay but got back in to the car and left. There was no waiting and I sat right down on Wednesday afternoon. Bobby and instructor worked well together. He went to work immediately with confidence and did a really good meticulous job. When you have a good haircut, you have more confidence, nice. Well recommended, I will return. read more

If you are looking to attend school for barbering please take the time to read this. My name Is Marco Uriostegui and it wasn't too long ago that I graduated from this school and I'd like to take the time to write a review about my experience here over the past year. When I first showed up to this school they promised me quality education BUT they failed to give me just that. It took me some time to to figure out what I was passionate about when I got out of high school so when I finally decided that I wanted to become a barber I was excited to attend Cru. Shortly after I had signed up I stated noticing that the school was a complete JOKE. FIRST OFF the school is overly priced, if you take the time do your research there are schools that are wayyyyy cheaper. I wish I would have done much more research because I'm I'm stuck paying an out standing amount of $$,$$$. Second of all the teachers were a joke I learned nothing when it came to fading, tapering, cutting long hair, texturizing, and styling. YouTube does a better job at teaching you those things. I recommend you watch all the fantastic educators the internet has to offer, thank god for them or I'd be lost right now. Third, the kits they provide are A JOKE. They make you pay over a grand on the kits alone when if you do your research (once again) you will find that the same "starter" kit they put together costs maybe about a couple hundred. When it comes down to it I write this review in hopes that one of you will read it before you sing your life away to these people because I did and I got crap out of it. There are better places out there people don't be fooled by the mirage they put up. I'm attaching a picture of my certificate to show you that I was a student and I did spend a whole year doing BS. I am consistently satisfied with my haircut at CRU. They are still learning the trade and appreciate the effort they took to make sure they received help in case they were struggling with a certain process during the hair cut. Its usually a free haircut, I'm not sure why I paid in the past but these past two experiences have been free with the amount I usually pay included as tip. If you're broke and need a haircut, give them a try and be sure to know what you want as they can sometimes struggle with identifying what you want and explaining the different cuts to you. Which in my opinion is fair considering you're the only one that knows how you like your hair and cannot expect a student to figure that one out without some kind of picture or explanation. Avoid this place. I came here in the afternoon looking for a cut, and all they did was IGNORE me. They had like 5 decent students but whenever I came looking for a cut they were never here. The rest are bad students and instructors won't do jack about it. I called to make a complain and highly doubt it they even took it in count. Been here twice and both times the students were great! I get a full head and face shave for 10 dollars. It's a win win! I used to go to John Wesley in LB on Pine before they moved to a new location. They fired the head professor and the barber skills at the school just went away. Here they follow the the towel techniques and do a great job over all. My new go to! read more

I know the hair cuts are free and for that as seniors on a fixed income with my husband being disabled as well we are grateful for the opportunity to go and get our hair cut. Men for free woman $5. Plus a tip of course. Anyhow arrived at 2:30pm spoke with the instructor got my husband in for a cut. All the students that cut ladies hair were leaving. I was out of luck. My husband gets a flat top and has gone there for the last two years. No supervision from the instructor and this is what he got. His head shaved. He's always gotten a flattop before. Wide variety of skills across the board here. The instructor that was assisting made sure to check on each student. Went in for the "free" promo haircut. The lady behind the counter tried to convince me it was Thursday instead of Wed so no discount.. LOL just an honest mistake. Chris did a great job on the cut. A little slow and not as aggressive a cutter as you'd get at Mt.Zion, but he's only been at it for 9 months. Keep up the good work. Be ready for the strange atmosphere, this is a beauty college not a barber shop or salon. Kids (students) were being kids. The asian ladies (obviously instructors/owners) were in their own little world. But hey, what do want outta a free cut + $5 tip? Beware of student barbers who are shaving off hair left and right, WITHOUT instructor supervision. I've been here a few times for a free cut and I've noticed that the students do not seem have the appropriate knowledge when it comes to barbership. It's quite sad, because the art of barbership is quite beautiful, yet there does not seem to be any instructions on to do so. They also recently started charging $5 for their cuts too. No way brother. I think I'll just pay $6 for a haircut at a more well-established barbershop, with more experienced individuals. read more

Chill spot to come and get a haircut. The environment here is much better than most barbershops. They have plenty of staff ready to cut so that eliminates the waiting line. The haircuts take 10 minutes extra but the quality is great! I give it 3 stars based on the barber Tyler. I can't guarantee everyone will be as good, because I'm yet to try other barbers. Fortunately, the teacher kept coming over and bailing him out, but I was really scared. She kept saying "Did you lose your guide again?" And he would honestly respond, "Yes".
