Review #955 2026-019…read more Hours: Daily, 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM; closed 1st Tuesday at 2:00 PM monthly for cleaning, park to reopen when the concrete is dry. My son & I were supporting his friend who had a part in the "Alice in Wonderland" musical at Hermosa Beach Community Theater. After the show, the kiddos wanted to hang out at Hermosa Beach Skate Park, which is west (behind) of the theater. The skate park is a concrete park that has various obstacles like ramps, funbox, manny pads, ledges, & rails for all skill levels, & open for drop-in use. It seems smaller than the one in Wilson Park that closed in the late 2000s. Skateboards, in-line skates, & scooters permitted; no bicycles. Safety gear (helmet, elbow pads, knee pads) are required; in-line skaters must also wear wrist guards. Failure to comply with rule or code of conduct may result in suspension; the City of Hermosa Beach may also close the skate park at their discretion. There's free parking available; the driveway is just east of the skate park's entrance. It wasn't that busy on a late Sunday afternoon, probably because the weather was slightly chill. Some of the older kids (middle school?) were more advanced than the younger ones. They were either on skateboards or scooters, with one in-line skater. Of course, there's always a couple of hooligans that don't follow park rules... they were attempting to triple skate together on a scooter down the ramp. Of course, it was an abysmal attempt. O_o The ramp wasn't too high so it's not probable for a major injury or concussion. But what if it's that 1% chance? Why risk it? And to the point of getting caught & having the skate park closed to others in the community that follows the rules & uses it appropriately? Especially since there's only a handful of skate parks in the South Bay. My son didn't have his gear because it was an unexpected play date. He has a skateboard, but prefers his scooter & bike because he's more skilled in those. He mostly stayed outside or along the perimeter to chat with his friend. I couldn't find any rule of pedestrians/observers preventing them from being inside since they're not active skate participants. As a general rule of thumb, safety-wise, I told my son to stay outside to avoid unnecessary accidents. He went in when he noticed fewer skaters/scooters & no one was roughhousing. It's a bit far from our place, but if his friend is into skateboarding, we can come hang out next time with his scooter at Hermosa Beach Skate Park.

In fact, it has quite the homey atmosphere, while keeping a well-maintained one as well. Grass for soccer is well mowed and edged, courts are well lined with functional nets. It's not new and shiny but it is maintained with care. The after school tennis class instruction is led by mostly high school tennis team players, along with Liz, who seems to be the adult in charge. Obviously, Courtney is around but I don't expect her to be leading group classes. Anyway, care is taken to improve the kids' strokes and footwork, as much as possible, to the extent the kids are willing to listen and correct. Both my kids are enjoying their classes, with a little treat after. I love their little tennis shop and the tables that make it easy for people to congregate and make it feel like a cafe. Bathrooms, lockers, water fountains, and most importantly, the ice machine are all functional and clean. Also love the 10-pack of classes they have. Usually no deals to be found for tennis.

Started off playing tennis here, then moved on to pickleball, and now I'm back to playing tennis…read more I signed up for the advance group session and it was pretty fun. The designated pickleball courts are really nice. I always feel like it was a treat every time my friends were able to reserve those courts. The tennis courts with the pickleball lines can be confusing the first time you hit on it. The tennis lines are white and the pickleball lines are black. You get used to it after a bit. But the lights here are horrible. You don't even have to hit the ball too high and the ball will get lost in the lights. And the parking here is also horrible. If you get here around 5:30-6PM, (especially if it's soccer season) good luck finding parking. People just make their own parking spots along the red zone (I'm also guilty of this). But with all that said, I'll definitely join a group session again. Especially since it's summer right now and the sun is staying out longer. I just got a new racket and I feel like I need to hit more than once a week to get my money's worth. Lol So I'll see you soon South Bay Tennis!

Most recently, it's been here for me when I come back from NYC and just want to get some shots up alone. Nothing as cathartic as grabbing the new basketball my Granny just got me, popping my airpods in, and doing the basketball workouts I used to do as a kid when hoop dreams were all I cared about. Something about reconnecting with that part of myself just eases the stresses that come with adulthood. I think that chubby insecure kid would be proud of who I am today, and that makes me smile. It's good to look back at your past and appreciate who you've become... But don't stare at it, or you'll end up staying there. Look back, smile, and keep pushing forward. I also randomly seen Kendrick Lamar doing a prison workout here a few years back. That was a trip lol. THANK YOU LIVE OAK! THANK YOU GRANNY I LOVE THIS NEW BASKETBALL! IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov_reviews
