One of the best what Forth of July, celebrations in the city of Los Angeles. We have been coming here since they stop having the Forth of July celebrations at Centinella Park. They have a amazing fan that starts entertaining at 6 PM until the fireworks show starts. They have multiple food trucks with great food to experience and plenty of activities for the kids. There's two jumpers and you can play whatever sports you love in the grassy area. They also have a hill, and if you have a box, you can slide down it to your hearts joy. read more

The place is really thought out. Well. There was ample parking. They have lights for when it gets darker. There's a playground for older kids, a playground for younger kids and a huge open field. The bathrooms were surprisingly very very clean. I was very surprised. I thought it was going to be something where I had to hold my breath for 3 minutes. Use the bathroom, wash my hands and head out. But it was extremely clean. They have a giant fire pit. No one started a fire there, but it looks like that would be a pretty big bonfire. Back home for Thanksgiving, me mum asked me if I wanted to play in her Tuesday afternoon Pickleball group made up of 60+ year old moms. Absolutely I do, mother. Real ones know Pickleball with the older crowd is an absolute war, and war is a full contact sport. This is big, big business to them. We reserved one of the 4 legit Pickleball courts here at Rec Park, and as they start warming up and trading Holiday horror stories like "I'm a little sad Chase is with his girlfriends family this year for Thanksgiving" or "Ugh I'm worried the Turkey Roaster won't hold up this year but Steve just INSISTS on using the same one from 1962..." the palpable tension of gametime on the horizon begins to percolate. Few things are more humbling than doing anything athletic with a group of 60 year old women and them absolutely dominating you. Thankfully, I wouldn't know what that is like as I am an ELITE athlete and was gliding out there like a Prime Rafa Nadal on Clay while trash talking them with lines like "MAKE MARTHA MOVE HER FEET, SHE DON'T WANT TO MOVE HER FEET I PROMISE YOU, SHE STUCK IN THE MUD! GO RIGHT AT MUDDY MARTHA SHE NOT BUILT FOR THIS! " or "NANCY IS WIT US! GET HER ONE OF OUR JERSEYS!" after the yellow wiffle ball just barely lands out of bounds giving us a point....................... ahahaahahaha jk I was actually getting WHOOPED out there. These ladies are so skilled it's crazy. Real humbling stuff. This park is sick though they have everything from tennis courts, hockey rink, lawn bowling, basketball courts, volleyball courts, playground, baseball field, etc. Something for everyone. I'm honestly shocked at how bad the bathrooms at rec park were, the ones by the tenis courts. There was not a SINGLE stall with toilet paper, no seat covers anywhere, and no soap in the dispensers. This isn't a small oversight it's seriously a complete failure of basic sanitation. It genuinely looked like the bathrooms hadn't been cleaned or checked up on in weeks. I know it sounds hard to believe, but that was the reality. For a public park with families and kids, this is unacceptable and incredibly frustrating. Literally DISGUSTING IN THERE. read more

Considering this is a FREE public park, I'm very impressed with the cleanliness and upkeep. This property is huge and has so many things to do: cornhole, lawn bowling, pickleball, tennis, softball, soccer, and the list goes on. This park is very large. There are two playgrounds. One fenced for the little babies, one open for the older kids. My 4-year-old son loved it! It's very clean, a lot of benches and tables. Great park for families! There are fun playgrounds for kids here. Adults can work out, and even dogs can enjoy the space. The grassy part, which is always nice for any park, is also nice. Don't let this park fool you into thinking it's just ordinary, it's not! With that said, it's got levels of areas for different activities. It has Tennis, Basketball Courts, Roller Hockey, Racquetball and Lawn Bowling among many other activities. Community center also offers a variety of activities and classes, among other things as well. The city holds seasonal town events & festivities throughout the year. Parks great for families with wee ones or couples, and older folks to take a stroll in. And finally, the best Fireworks display (if you don't want to fool around with traffic at the beach to watch the Pier ones) that you can see anywhere in the city -that's if you don't mind walking or a short drive to it and/or if you want the front view on field, which is very reasonable for bracelet/entrance fee, I might add). If your watching from outside, be sure to bring a lawn chair & find a spot within neighborhood/birds eye view of park and plan to get there early if driving, parking gets taken up fast! I live within a few blocks, so I was lucky to have a good spot up the street/hill I live on. read more

Great little park... rephrase that, great BIG park! this park is huge and accomodates all different type of ventures, activities and most of all, ages. there is virtually something for everyone who enjoys a good park experience. they have a baseball field, bball court, tennis courts, raquetball, lawn bowling, picnic areas complete with bbq grills, a toddler safe play area with rubber floors and lots and lots of open spaces. GO FLY A KITE! we came by recently for the annual Easter Egg Hunt here put on by the parks department. two words... Awe. Some. the people here did a tremendous job with putting this escapade together. this was our first time being a part of it and we have to say that we can't wait till next year. the event was very well organized. we had spotted the banners indicating the event date and location a week before while taking one of our walks. the day of the event was even more organized even amidst all the chaos that is "Toddler Terrors"! it was a sea of strollers and baby bjorns and sun hats and lattes out there! communication and direction were tantamount to being able to enjoy this morning, and the staff here were on top of things. loud speakers, though it freaked out sofia at first, provided clear and concise info. big kids here, little kids there, walkers, crawlers etc etc. i can't say enough about how well the event was put together. the hunt itself went smoothly. well, as smooth as getting 2, 3 and 4 year olds to do an activity can be. the kids were scattered and parents were chasing them down but so much fun. so much. the sun was out, the air was crisp and grass was definitely greener on THIS side. we had a great time and will definitely be coming back to this park, eggs or not. :) read more

It's a great park in many ways: spacious, many activities, beautifully landscaped, and perfect for families. You can play tennis, baseball, hockey, basketball, ping pong, picnic, or just take a leisurely stroll in and around the tree-lined area. As a resident you can buy a rec card fairly cheap and get access to many venues, including swimming pools and tennis courts. Renting a tennis court on the same day during the summer was not difficult in off-peak hours (before 6PM). During the pandemic, this was one of the only safe places to stroll and hang out, and many visitors practiced safe-distancing and wore masks. A fun outing can include buying take-out at a near-by restaurant (a block away), and choosing a shady patch of grass to hang out. read more

El Segundo has lots of little parks throughout the city, drive around a bit and you'll see small, medium and large parks mixed in within the houses. The recreation park is the main center for baseball, basketball, tennis, skate/hockey, volleyball, lawn bowling, horseshoes, kid's playground, etc. I signed up for a rec card ($10/year I believe) and you can use it to check out what you need for the activity (basketball, horseshoes, etc.). They also have community trips to local places (San Antonio Winery, downtown) and some with farther destinations (Solvang, Chumash Casino). If you live in El Segundo and enjoy outdoor activities, you must check it out. read more

This place is huge. I have never seen a park with an elevator! It connects an upper level parking lot with the Joslyn Center (310-524-2705), which is where I began exploring. Inside I saw seniors playing cards & shooting pool. I saw a room with a big screen TV and big comfy chairs. And I ventured into only a few of the rooms, who knows what there is to be found in the rest of the building. Outside the center were shuffleboard courts, lawn bowling, and a horseshoe pit (see photos). This park already had me at this point. I was impressed. This section of the park is thick with majestic old pine trees. Next I saw volleyball courts, a paddle tennis court, a roller hockey rink, and a whole slew of tennis courts. At least one of the tennis courts even had bleachers. Serious stuff! Haha. And there was a basketball court, of course. (See photos.) Next I wandered into the picnic area, the only real crowded place in this park on a summer Sunday morning. There were gatherings galore in progress. There was music blaring through big speakers, balloons all over the place, picnic tables laden with wrapped gifts, men lighting bar-b-ques, kids running around........holy crap what a party! The food cooking on all the various grills smelled so good! Yes,I took photos of the celebrations. There was even a group playing outdoor bingo. That's when I really realized why I love parks so much: Parks have great energy. People are relaxing & having fun, cutting loose doing what they love, in their precious free time. (Including me.....exploring outdoor spaces with a camera brings me joy.) There was another community building near the picnic area, I'm not sure what it was used for, but it had lighted ping pong tables in an outdoor area. Ball fields were everywhere, I lost count. And, near the kids' playground area, there was a building that's used for childcare. Gordon Clubhouse, I think it's called. Back near where I originally entered the park, near the elevator, is a whole separate facility that is a teen center. That's where the skateboard park is, and it was filled with boys. I watched for awhile. The kids were taking hard falls on the concrete, ouch. When a group of girls showed up, I knew the afternoon was about to become interesting for that group of barely teenage boys.......ha! Next to the skate park was a basketball court, and on the other side was a Scouthouse and a Teen Community Center (310-524-2718). Whew. I don't think this picturesque, well-maintained park is lacking anything. I took more than 40 photos. Most of the green space and all the facilities except the Teen Center are below street level. So you've got cool old stairs and winding paths on all sides of the park. I saw elderly people who were at the park just to walk the paths among the trees. Averill Park in San Pedro gets my vote for most beautiful-looking park with no sports facilities. And now Recreation Center in El Segundo gets my vote for nicest & most complete sports-facility park I've seen so far in LA. Plenty of free parking, lots were everywhere in and around the park. El Segundo is "the" hidden gem of Los Angeles; perhaps in all of Southern California. I had the pleasure of living here for almost 7 years, and one of the biggest attractions is the Recreation Park. SoCal, particularly beach towns such as El Segundo, are known for their incredible weather, and if you like the outdoors, you'll love the Recreation Park. My i.d. card let me reserve a court for 1 hour, and since my wife had a card too, we could reserve a court for 2 hours; which was more than enough time to play a 3-set match. If my son had been born while living there, I think we would have been there all the time. You can bring your kid(s) here and expose them to all kinds of different sports and/or activities. Or you can simply let then run around and "jump their sillies out". The park is staffed adequately and the grounds are well maintained, as the grass is always cut and there is never any trash on the ground or overflowing trash cans, ala City Park in New Orleans, LA. But I digress. If you aren't a resident of El Segundo, you'd never guess that such a large park exists in such a small town. Kudos to El Segundo. I LEFT MY WALLET IN EL SEGUNDO! Did you understand that reference? Look it up if you didn't. It's worth it. Never accuse El Segundo of not having anything to do. Trust me; no one really thinks of El Segundo as a destination, but this place rivals Tokyo, rivals Vegas, rivals Big Bear, rivals The Big Apple...Yes, it's true: El Segundo is the best vacation destination in America. Er, well, sort of. Anyways, I don't want to intimidate you or anything, so I'll just continue with my review. This place truly has it all, and you can play basically any sport you want here. It's insane what they offer here: ping pong areas, horseshoes, handball courts, and...everything. I went here once a week after work to play basketball with my co-workers on the outdoor courts they have here. I found that at that time that the courts weren't full at all; in fact, there were always just a few people playing, and that was always good in the case that we wanted to run half-court or full-court games with even teams. The people who play here range in skill; there are some really, really good high school kids that obviously don't play on an organized team or anything yet are still insanely good at streetball, and there are middle-aged guys who have that trademark old man game. One time, I played against this dude who had his little baby daughter with him, and the man could flat-out shoot. I could have sworn it was, like, Stephen Curry or something, but I remembered that the Warriors were in Milwaukee that night (I made that up, but the guy was real). But honestly, the courts here are a lot of fun, and they certainly have four sets of half-court hoops and two hoops dedicated to full court games. The stanchions are made of stone but are angled such that you can't really run into them full-speed and crush your face in, and the nets are well-kept and aren't all mangled like a lot of other places I've seen. The rims are extremely hard, and so you'll have to hit some pure shots in order to score; this should favor the big men and women in the post rather than shooters, but as on any court, the best players adapt. The basketball courts are nearby the tennis courts and an awesome outdoor hockey rink, and the buzzer from the scoreboard is constantly buzzing during games. A nearby baseball diamond opens up into a huge outfield and grassy area, and to be honest, I haven't even been able to explore the entire park yet. However, it's just insane how large this place is, and it's insane how it's just tucked away in this El Segundo neighborhood. Lastly, parking is quite easy; they have parking lots, and if that fails, you can park in the surrounding neighborhoods. Of course, you should be respectful of the residents and only park in areas that won't inconvenience them. Now I must go back; after all, I gotta pick up my wallet. read more

Now that I live in the hood this is definitely my favorite park ever! There are a ton of events going on here year round including the famous El Segundo Easter egg hunt (which honestly is crazy! But popular) and the ES fireworks sponsored by Chevron typically. Everything is here as it is a true community park-roller hockey, tennis, baseball, softball, skate, lawn bowling, playground, table tennis, basketball, and lots of room to ride your scooters and bikes and rollerblades. You can also have a party here and reserve a space. There is a fire pit you can reserve. Like I said true community park, rare find these days! read more

Great, open space with a variety of activities available. We love taking our dog here and letting him run around the small dog enclosure. There's tons of trees to keep the park nice and cool. It's laid out such that you can't really tell how close you are to LAX. Parking is ample in the lot, and if parking is hard to find, there's plenty of street parking. The Gundo. My home away from home while I call LA my own once again. A mile east of the beach and mile south of LAX, is this tucked away gem. Right in the middle is Recreation Park. Somewhere in the middle of our declining park departments and poor community planning, lies a place that is a tribute to a day when communities gathered around things that enabled kids to be kids and people simply enjoyed each others company. On a warm summer night, there is no better place to stroll through than Rec Park. Lights on in full force, a beautifully manicured park maintained by Los Angeles facility folks that take honest care in loving the park, kids running around everywhere - around bases, on courts and around the walkways and you really get the feeling you are amongst a COMMUNITY of people. It is a throw back to when times were different, at least in a big bustling vast land such as Los Angeles. I recently got myself a 2-year term on a community garden plot so now not only do I enjoy a walk through the park with my dog, I get to grow some food here too! The strawberries are just starting to ripen! Sweeeet. read more

My review is on the playground. This park is pretty packed on the weekends so if you don't like a crowd you may wanna go elsewhere. It's really cute with separate play areas for big kids and little kids. The little kids area is fenced in with a latch gate that typically stays closed, which I liked. There's also a small sand pit in the corner for tactile kids who love sand. I hate sand (gets everywhere) so luckily the rest of the playground is covered in sponge mat (pretty sure that's not what it's called). There's also a large field area right next to the playground where teens or older kids can throw around a ball, run wild or just walk and take selfies lol. read more

I use to play ping pong with my coworkers or some ppl from nearby companies here during lunch time, I still do whenever I'm in the park. The ping pong tables are very basic slabs of concrete but they are free and they let u check out the paddles if u leave ur driver's license. It's a good way to move the limbs after I have been sitting there watching the kids play on the swings since I don't need to swing them anymore. The park has almost everything, there's some kind of activities going on every time I'm there. There are always someone playing tennis, the soccer ball field has game going on often and the basketball area is busy more often than not. I feel energetic in this park! I also like the picnic area, where the knobby big trees and rusty looking painted concrete tables provide an out of the office environment for lunch and a little siesta afterward. After a nice nutritious meal and a little relaxation, I'm ready to be back in the office. I have my eyes set on the nice lawn bowling area, something to try in the future. :-) read more

This park is awesome! I like coming here to play tennis. The courts are open to the public til 5:00PM. After that it's only available to El Segundo residents and must reserve courts in advance. This park is wonderful for toddlers. It has a fenced in play area with a lot to do. My son enjoyed the see saw and the ride in fire truck structure the most. He also enjoyed the little tunnels on the climbing structure. The toddler area also features low swings, baby swings, a tiny half circle rock wall and the main structure with slides. The park is large. It has tennis courts, built in ping pong tables, a baseball field, another kind of square field, and more. When we were there, we saw 2 large bounce houses set up for birthday parties. The bathrooms were surprisingly nice. Think McDonald's level. Still, this is much nicer than most park bathrooms. They have a larger play structure for older kids that we did not check out. We met a couple of very nice families that were warm and chatty. This is a cute park and definitely worth checking out with your little ones. read more

This is a great park in the El Segundo area. I came to Recreation for a birthday party a little while back and had a difficult time finding the party so I got a great tour of what the park had to offer! It is certainly used by the community and has a variety of grassy areas, sports fields, tennis courts, playgrounds. Tons of shade trees as well. I also really liked that the park wasn't just flat, but had various levels with recreation areas. We were at the top of one of these levels by some big shade trees. Not too far below us was an area with logs and stumps arranged for what looked like a fire pit or something. The restrooms were nearby, but were fairly smelly and dirty feeling. The only draw back I had coming here. I spent some good time in there too as I had just potty trained my daughter and wanted to make sure we had no accidents. Not too far off there was a great playground area. They had a fenced in area for little ones like my kids, and then a larger play structure for older kids. It was nice to have the fenced in area as I knew my kids wouldn't just take off when I wasn't looking. I was surprised by how many older kids liked playing in the small playground, but they were respectful of the little kids so I didn't have any issues. As I live fairly far away from this park I likely would only come here if invited, but for folks in the area, it's a great place to spend an afternoon with the kids. read more

I grew up playing roller hockey my whole life and have let my gear sit in the closet for years now. I just found this park on Yelp and went over to shoot around tonight. I can't believe this rink has been 5 min from my front door all this time! It's a great spot that was lighted and wide open...on one was even there and the rink was open. I'd love to know the nights of college/mens' pickup games. If anyone knows, post it here please. Aside from the rink, the whole park was clean and well groomed. A massive park with something for everybody. There are two playgrounds for children. One is for older children that sit upon a little hill while the other is enclosed with a safety gate and is mostly for the younger crowd. They even have a sandbox for kids to play in. All of the equipment is new and modern. There is also an option of an open field for those who want to play catch, soccer or to enjoy a nice picnic.
