Ask the Community - CSI Mini Storage

Can anyone tell me about moisture control, dust migration and vermin? These look like container boxes which I have heard do not do a good job of keeping dampness out. Same thing with freeway dust and exhaust.

Our storage facility has made great use of cargo containers and has modified them by converting them into storage spaces. The doorway entry factors heavily of how much exposure to dust your items will get.… Read more

But we soon experienced Public Storage's company policy. Raise the rent often and maximize it, until long-term loyal renters are paying way over the market rent that new tenants pay! Then there was the dog feces incident. People were there with a large dog while I was re-organizing my space. After they left their dog had left his leavings at my door. I went to the office, she denied that any dog had ever been there. I brought her to my space and she pointed at my clean broom and implied that I was equipped to clean it. Nope. At a certain point we decided that our considerable moving expenses would be recouped by moving to a place that appreciated long term tenants. Security Public Storage was more expensive to start but promised reasonable rent increases. They've kept their promise. Public Storage has a strange business strategy. We'd taken advantage of a great move-in discount, and rented a prime 10x20 drive-up space for our inventory. When tenants leave they give discounts to the new people and may have vacancies losing rent. It doesn't make sense to drive out steady long term payers. But we're happy with Security Public Storage now.

I started renting two units here at the end of 2024 for reasonable prices $69 and $82 a month…read more Within just a few months, the constant price hikes started. My units went from under $100 each to nearly $400 each within about six months. It became impossible to keep up. Instead of being able to save money to move my belongings out, I was stuck paying outrageous monthly bills just to avoid losing everything. By March 2026, I made an agreement with the owner that if I had everything moved out by March 31, they would remove the late fees from my account. So I drove four hours away, rented a U-Haul, hired movers, and showed up on March 31 ready to finally clear everything out. When I arrived, there were police at the property. At first I thought nothing of it. I went to my units and realized I only had a key to one of them. The second unit had no key, and the office didn't have one either, so they cut the lock off for me. When I opened the unit, I was completely shocked. My belongings had clearly been broken into, destroyed, torn apart, stolen, and thrown everywhere. Things that I had packed carefully were ripped open and scattered throughout the unit. I then found out the police had been there earlier because another customer had FOUR units broken into. While talking to other renters on the property, another customer told me his unit had also been broken into months earlier. So my question is: where is the security? If this facility is charging people hundreds more every month, why is there apparently no protection for customers' property despite repeated thefts? After seeing the condition of my unit, the staff told me they would give me more time to deal with everything since it was impossible to finish that day. I had to completely repack what was left of my belongings, rent another U-Haul, coordinate movers again, and spend even more money and time trying to clean up a disaster I did not create. I also live four hours away and am currently in an extremely fast-paced nursing program, so trying to handle all of this on top of school and life responsibilities has been overwhelming. Then a month later I called back and was met by an incredibly rude manager who informed me I somehow owed another $780 & what was left of my belongings would be auctioned out June 16th. I was also informed the original manager I had spoken to was no longer working there and didn't leave any notes about my situation. This entire experience has been exhausting, stressful, and unacceptable. Between the insane price increases, lack of security, break-ins, destroyed property, and poor management, I would strongly recommend people think twice before storing their belongings here. I felt completely unsupported as a customer, and it honestly seemed like nobody cared what happened to my belongings once they had my money.

ZERO STARS - Deceptive Practices, Disrespectful Staff, and Surveillance-Level Behavior…read more My experience at the Extra Space Storage - San Pablo (Moraga Road) location has been one of the most unprofessional and disturbing customer service interactions I've ever encountered. Let's begin with the facts: My unit started at $228/month. Within less than a year, it was raised to nearly $500--with no improvements to service or explanation beyond corporate rate excuses. This is more than a 100% increase in under 12 months. When I voiced concerns about the pricing and mentioned I may move out, an employee literally said "bye" and hung up on me. That alone should disqualify someone from working in customer service. Shortly after filing formal complaints (including with the BBB), I noticed a Facebook post mocking me--publicly visible and posted within hours of my complaint. The employee who responded to my original email inquiry used a name and email that matched the Facebook account, making it clear that the person monitoring my complaints is also watching my social media. This employee, Deva Shalece Harris, also happens to be the only person with that name on my friend list--despite never identifying herself during our storage-related communication. That means not only was I mocked, but I was digitally watched and then publicly ridiculed, by a staff member with access to my account. I've since escalated this to the district manager, Linz Askham, with screenshots and formal documentation. As of now, I've received polite emails but no accountability, no apology, and no real resolution. I now have serious concerns about privacy, data misuse, and professionalism at this facility. If you are a customer here, or considering storing your belongings, please ask yourself: What does it say when the staff can stalk your social media and then mock you for filing a legitimate complaint? This is not about bad vibes--it's about breach of trust, targeted retaliation, and lack of internal oversight. Do better, Extra Space Storage. I have receipts, and I won't be silent. -- Christina H.

**CAUTION** Before renting at any storage facility managed by Cubix Asset Management, I would…read morestrongly encourage prospective tenants to do their homework and ask a lot of questions. My concerns don't stem from a minor customer service issue. They stem from how Cubix handled the aftermath of a burglary at one of its managed facilities where my property was stolen. As a disabled veteran, many of the items I stored were not simply replaceable household goods. Among the property taken were military awards, memorabilia, service-related keepsakes, and personal belongings collected over years of military service. Some of these items had been with me through multiple duty assignments and major chapters of my life. They carried sentimental value that cannot be measured in dollars and cannot simply be replaced with an insurance payment. After the theft, I spent months attempting to obtain basic information, including insurance contacts, ownership information, preservation of video footage and access logs, and a clear explanation of what happened. The process was frustratingly slow, communication was inconsistent, and getting straightforward answers proved far more difficult than it should have been. The facility advertised security cameras and surveillance. After the burglary, I was informed by the property manager that the camera covering the area of my unit was not functioning or connected to Wi-Fi. Learning that after my property had already been stolen was deeply concerning. I also learned that there had been another break-in in the same area of the facility just days before my unit was burglarized. That raised obvious questions about what additional precautions, inspections, or security checks were performed afterward and whether the advertised daily walkthroughs were actually occurring as represented. What was most disappointing was the lack of urgency and accountability after a customer suffered a significant loss. A theft is stressful enough. Customers should not have to spend months chasing information that should be readily available after an incident, especially when the stolen property includes items that are impossible to replace. In the end, after months of follow-up, the only resolution offered was roughly three months of free rent. While I appreciated that some offer was eventually made, it amounted to very little compared to the value of the property that was stolen and the time spent trying to obtain answers. Rather than providing confidence that the matter had been taken seriously, the offer felt more like an acknowledgment that something had gone wrong without any meaningful effort to make it right. The message I was left with was simple: the loss was significant, but the response was minimal. As a result, I have been forced to pursue the matter in small claims court. If you're considering renting at a Cubix-managed facility, I would recommend asking the following questions before signing a lease: * Who handles theft and loss claims? * How can tenants obtain insurance information if property is stolen? * What procedures exist to preserve surveillance footage and access records? * Are all advertised security cameras actually functioning and connected? * What steps are taken when there is a reported break-in at the facility? * How quickly are customer complaints escalated and resolved? * Who has authority to make decisions when a serious issue arises? I can only speak from my own experience, but based on that experience, I would think carefully before storing anything you would be upset to lose. Renting the unit was easy. Getting answers after a burglary was not. Anyone considering a Cubix-managed facility should spend as much time asking about theft claims, surveillance systems, and incident response as they do comparing rental rates. Those details may not seem important until the day you actually need them.

PODS listed a number of third-party movers, which was a good place to start my research. As I investigated the companies that claim to do packing, I found that most offer only the bare minimum - like only wrapping furniture. I found Bay Area Moving & Storage on Yelp and read their webpage. I talked with Juan about my needs, and he asked all the right questions. One wrinkle is that I needed help (packing AND moving) on a specific single day, and thankfully they were available and could do it all. He gave me a complete quote, and we talked through it. The day before the move, he confirmed everything with me over the phone. Pablo and a team of three others called in the morning, and arrived on schedule with all the necessary packing supplies and equipment. The team was VERY experienced, and packed us quickly and efficiently. It's hard to believe that they got everything packed from our 2-bedroom home + garage into the POD. Some sort of crazy magic was done that day. Pablo and team were careful and attentive. He walked me through how to use the ratchet straps, and prepped everything for me to pack away mattresses the next morning - with the exact amount of space necessary left in the POD. It's hard to calculate the value they provided. I am confident that my belongings are safe, and shocked that nothing will be left behind. Bravo, guys.
