If you are open to immunizations than the CSULB Student Health Services is an ideal choice for your flu shot and other immunizations. The recent measles outbreak prompted me to make an appointment for a free test to verify my immunization to measles (it turns out I HAD been immunized as a child). I was impressed with the efficiency of the procedure and the quick notification via email about my immunity. I was VERY impressed with the free flu shots that were being given out on campus last fall. My primary care physician was "out" of the flu vaccine so having the Student Health Services offer to give students the vaccine and for free was very convenient and a proactive approach to protecting student and faculty health. CONS: That tedious and redundant online questionnaire that you have to complete before attending your appointment. I was so frustrated with the questionnaire because even after you answer all the random questions ("Do you wear a bicycle helmet?, "Do you wear a seatbelt?"), the questionnaire would still say you had questions to complete and would not let you continue. At my last appointment this week I just gave up. The clinic was packed and there was only one clerk available so I just closed the application and walked out :-/ Besides that the service is excellent so take advantage of the clinic and utilize the services. Your tuition pays for this clinic so use it! Have a great semester. read more

Absolutely amazing service and care, I was deathly ill this week and I had to be at school because of finals and whatnot. I was just so nauseous and sick and I had no other choice but to seek some help on campus I went to this health center. I accidentally forgot my wallet at the library with a friend and I went into the center without a wallet or identification and they still treated me. I was treated within five minutes by the nurse and after talking to the nurse they sent me back to the waiting room to speak to a doctor. Who immediately gave me medication for the nausea and tested me for other symptoms they were so sweet and really helpful. I honestly could not thank them enough I felt better right away. Doctor gave me a prescription for two medications one was 1.50 the other 2.50. I couldn't believe they offered medicine at these prices and for many kinds of medicine. Not to mention I didn't have my wallet so the clerk gave me an IOU so I was still able to leave with my medicine and make it to my last two classes for the day. Seriously these people are angels, thank you so much for all the hard work that you do!!! read more

All the interactions with the nursing staff has been amazing and they've all been so professional and pleasant every time I've gone in! My only complaint is the receptionist woman (or women?) that picks up the phone for the center. Every time I call in, she speaks in an extremely condescendingly tone in response to every question I have and turns every issue into an issue with me instead of simply telling me what can and cannot be done to help. I completely understand that it gets tedious explaining things to many different people in a day, but on the other hand, as someone who's job consists of answering calls and interacting with people on the daily, patience shouldn't be something foreign to you and respect should be mutual. Even over the phone. Love the nurses though :) read more

I came here on several occasions for different reasons. The first time i came here i filled out all my information online through the computers and checked in prior to my appointment. Shortly after waiting for my appointment i was informed that the nurse was not seeing anyone for an additional 2hrs. Although the receptionist were very friendly and attempted to accommodate the change in availability i had to cancel my appointment and leave for the day. The next time i came back for a different appointment i was given great service from the receptionist and waited in the lobby for a reasonable amount of time. I was seen by a nurse who asked routine questions and was friendly and made the appointment seem to go well at first. The issue was when i got called back after being sent to the lobby to wait for the Doctor i felt that doctor i met with just referred me out vs actually helping me. So i was back to having to make another appointment at a different time for the same thing i came in for. Now i have to wait 2 weeks before i can be seen for the same problem. The ladies at the check in are very friendly and professional but my issue is having to return several times for something i believe any doctor can take care of. read more

As I read the old reviews, it's clear that not much as changed. Supportive staff members such as the receptionists are amazing and have great customer service! Thank you to Faye Mayo, RN for helping me navigate a challenging situation. I really wanted to like this place but I have to be honest. I was not satisfied with the interactions I had with the nurse practitioner and doctor I saw. My first visit was with a nurse practitioner (can't remember her name) that was okay--she wasn't particularly nice or rude. Nonetheless, she wasn't able to help me so I had to go to a real facility to receive treatment. I went a second time for a different reason and worked with Dr. Simpson, who was cold and condescending. From the moment she walked in, she looked annoyed. Her demeanor remained impersonal, arrogant, and unfriendly throughout our quick interaction. To make matters worse, she interrupts, speaks over you, and talks to you like you're a child that doesn't know anything. Your medical degree does not give you an excuse to be rude. I do not recommend her and from the previous reviews, it seems like this is a pattern with most of the NPs and doctors. Technical skills and education are not the only aspect of being a doctor, you also need soft skills. Part of the job is being hospitable. I would only return to seek assistance from the supportive staff. Otherwise, I'd do myself favor and wait to meet with a reputable doctor outside of CSULB. read more

I'm glad this place has a yelp page! I was a student at CSULB from 2009-2014 and one of the first places I started to utilize was the health center for birth control, STD checks, etc. While the front desk was always helpful and friendly, and a couple of the doctors (elderly lady) were so fantastic! But... Oh my gosh... I remember one nurse was so condescending I just shut up until I got my birth control. I felt so dirty after giving her my sexual history. A couple of years later, for another round of BC, a nurse tried to talk down to me for being a smoker. I know the risks involved, I was a pre-med student! She then called the doctor in, and the doctor told me she doesn't give birth control to women who smoke. I saw myself out. When has this ever been the case??? I've been a smoker for years and doctors have never denied me birth control over it. I was still in my late teens/early twenties at the time. Around the same time, a friend of mine used the clinic for abortion services, and she said she felt judged by the nursing staff, and even said there was at least one nurse who gave her a dirty look. Like trying to navigate the red tape for an abortion pill isn't traumatic enough... Just go to Planned Parenthood, do yourself and your body a favor! CSULB, this isn't quality care. Give your staff some sensitivity training or something! I know college kids make bad decisions and ask stupid questions sometimes, but you're literally a CARE PROVIDER. Honest so unaccommodating and rude. The stars are ONLY for the pharmacy because they are affordable, nice, and fast. The front desk people need help, I came in asking for an appointment and they said they could only do walk in. So I said fine how long is the wait and they said "I don't know." No time estimation or anything, so I assumed it could be up to an hour. Almost 2 hours later with a runny nose, I figured I had enough and walked out. They ended up calling me saying I should follow up so I called back, and they were basically confused why I was calling, and they said I should come back in and wait longer. I asked the wait time and they still had no clue. Yeah, nope. I received another call stating I can actually make an appointment. So i thought sweet, I made a 1 pm appt for Tuesday. The Monday before my appointment they call me, leave a voicemail, and say that my appointment has been canceled, and doesn't even explain why???? But, of course, they said I could do a walk in if I wanted and spend hours waiting again. If this place is part of my tuition why are they not accommodating me? Never been in a place so unreasonable. read more

Pros: The health service center is a great resource to have on campus. I really like that if I have anything wrong, I can easily go in and see a doctor to get what I need. It is also helpful for those who don't have medical insurance and need help without paying huge costs at an urgent care or ER. BUT. Twice in one week I saw two different doctors for two unrelated things I wanted to take care of -- I have private insurance, but with doctor appointment wait times and me being at school already, decided to just do it through the health center since I pay for the services anyway with my tuition. Both times, the doctors come barreling in with paper in hand, mind already made up about my health or concerns. I was lectured both times (completely different check-ups, too) and I literally couldn't even ask questions before I was talked over and brushed aside. I get that these doctors are probably used to dealing with younger students, so they have completely lost touch with how to be more personable, respectful, and not be so abrasive as if we are bothering them or wasting their time. I don't need to be nagged at when I ask a question. One doctor literally laughed at me when I provided some background history to my health and then brushed me off like I lost my mind. Another doctor didn't even let me get my question out before shaking her head and shutting me down. If you have no other options, this is a good place to go -- just have lower expectations about the potential doctor you will get. The intake nurses are very nice and welcoming, but geesh, the two doctors I saw leave a lot to be desired. Of course, that's not to say all of them are like this -- maybe I just was unlucky. That being said, if I have a little issue I would still use the health center, but from now on I'll just suck it up and pay the $80 to go to urgent care or wait for a month to see my primary doctor. read more

I love how cheap everything is here but disappointed in the doctors. When I had vertigo the doctor was able to diagnose me and provide me with medicine that helped with the dizzyness. I went here today because I had itchy eyes and I told the nurse that I had alopecia and she said she hopes I feel better soon. The doctor came in and I told her why I was there, and she said "who told you to take alopecia?" Alopecia is itchyness and balding, not a medicine... read more

I freaking love CSULB health center. I got in a car accident a few months ago and got xrays done here. They Xray tech is a bad ass, and should totally be talked to in length. She's quite a fun person to talk to, even if it's about your broken rib and fractured sternum. I also got food poisoning off campus and was seen here. ( God going to class with food poisoning was a freaking nightmare. Never try it.) The Health center took care of me, treated me with respect and even after it all gave me a pass to hand my professors since I had been on IV for almost an entire day. I highly respect these guys. I really do wish I could write this place a better review. But I really have not had the best experiences here. Once I went in for a possible broken bone and had a x-ray done. The doctor wasn't sure if it was broken or not, and told me he would consult other doctors and give me a call in a few days. After a week with no call, I called them, and they said my doctor was now on vacation. So I was left not knowing what to do, and STILL injured. Not a fun experience. However, this is a really great place to get a TB test. You can schedule a time online, pay $2, and you are in and out in a few minutes. Just keep in mind you have to book an appointment about a week in advance. Although I personally haven't had the best experiences here, I know the health center provides a lot of support to students without insurance, and has a lot of services that a lot of students can take advantage of, so it's not all bad. And I know they have to serve a large student population, but the few times I have been here have simply felt like a waste of time. read more

My experiences here have always been unprofessional and frustrating. At my last appointment, the woman I spoke to (I believe she was a nurse practitioner) about negative side effects I experienced on my contraceptive was extremely rude and belittling to me. I told her multiple times that I wanted someone to look at marks on my chest, but continuously ignored me and spoke over me. At a precious appointment with another doctor, I was told to take a STD test (even though I expressed that it was not needed), and called me out in the middle of the hallway, saying that my test came back positive. After about a minute of confusion from my part, she proceeded to explain that she was looking at the wrong patient and told me that mine was in fact, negative. (All of this happened in the HALLWAY)! My experiences here have been frustrating and I always seem to leave on the verge of tears. Sadly, the level professionalism and respect for patient privacy is unacceptable. The only good aspects are the wait time and people working the pharmacy, who actually seem to care about you. Hope other patients have better experiences than I did. read more

I've never had very great experiences here. The staff is unprofessional and rude and are incredibly condescending. I woke up one morning to find that I was covered in red bumps from my neck down. I thought it may be a reaction to stress because the past week has, and I'm not exaggerating when I say this, been the most stressful week of my life for a variety of personal reasons. My roommate told me that she has gotten hives from stress, and after doing a lot of googling, this did seem like a common reaction to intense stress. Anyway, I go to the health center and the first lady to see me checks my vitals and asks if I'm allergic to anything. I tell her no and that I don't get allergies and that this has never happened to me before. I opened up a little and touched upon the stressful situation I've been going through and said that I thought it might be from that. She ignored what I said and concluded that it must be an allergic reaction. I was then sent to another room where a doctor, an older woman, saw me. Without even looking at my skin, she sits down and asks me if I've changed my soap, shampoo, perfume, laundry detergent, etc and I said no. She asks if I drink. I said no. She asks if I smoke tobacco. I said no. She asks if I do any recreational drugs, and I say yeah, weed. At that point on, I knew she was no longer taking anything I said seriously, and the most condescending look appeared on her face. She told me to stop smoking and said it could be from that. I smoke for medical purposes because I have severe anxiety. It also comes from dispensaries, so it is regulated. She said it had to be a reaction to something, and I ask if it could be from stress, and she said probably not. She then told me to take a sexual health workshop without even asking if I'm sexually active. Then she FINALLY looks at my skin up close, and admits that she has no idea what I have. She gave me the name of a skin irritation that kind of looks like what I have, but the symptoms on the paper she gave me don't really match up. She then prescribes me anti itch cream (even though I told her it doesn't itch) and claritin for allergies. Later I call my doctor from back home and told her my symptoms and about the stress I've been dealing with. She said it was very likely it was stress induced. I never took the claritin and it eventually went away once my life calmed down. I think cannabis helped with that too. Could it have been from allergies? Possibly. But I really wish she could've considered the possibility of it being stress related. These doctors are really judgmental and treat you like children. read more

I think that there are very caring and kind people here, who are willing to work with you and your health concerns and then like anywhere, there are very rude, abrupt, and unfriendly people. These people have not only helped me get health insurance but also helped me with birth control and are willing to work with me through my medical condition. While the nurse or doctor nurse interrupted me many times and projected her own diagnosis on me before hearing me out, she genuinely wanted to help. I just wish she'd been more patient. The case managers are usually friendly and helpful and have loads of information students should take advantage of. When sick with the flu, I've been seen by rude nurses who were condescending but I don't count that against this place. I count that against the nurses. If their rude behavior messes with my health then that's wrong and they should be fired or warned. So far, thankfully, it hasn't. The medicine is usually a lot cheaper here than anywhere else and the environment is fairly clean and organized. I would recommend it. read more

I do not recommend anyone to come here! I came here instead of Planned Parenthood because it was convenient, I could go to school and then get treated here. My experience here was so uncomfortable. The nurse assigned to me was very condescending, judgemental and rude. The doctor that treated me was very unhelpful and dismissed all my medical concerns. None of my concerns were addressed and it was a wasted appointment. I had to go to Planned Parenthood anyway because of my pointless appointment at Student Health Services. They were very friendly, kind and did not dismiss any of my concerns. I highly suggest Planned Parenthood versus this place. read more

I have been here twice. Once for the blood type test (about $6 if i'm not mistaken) in March with Brownsyn Braud and once for the well woman exam +birth control this month with Bonnie Cegles. Dr. Braud was friendly and explained my blood type to me and how it may affect pregnancy in the future. I don't have any complaints regarding her nor Bonnie. Bonnie was pretty cool and didn't make me feel uncomfortable except for when she checked for my ovaries lol. The pharmacy was great and everything was free thanks to FPACT. read more

I'm really surprised it took until just last month for someone to write a review. I wish I could give this place no stars. The charm of the CSULB health center is that it is free for students, oh wait not free it comes from a pretty penny added to our tuition. So now the charm is gone, what's left? A staff of doctors, nurses and staff that are rude, unprofessional and just plain unqualified. They seem to harbor a particular condescending attitude towards all students, as if getting sick is somehow your fault. And when they can't figure out what's wrong, they get angry and yell at you. I even had the pleasure of being called obese in a room full of students. The upsides, well there's maybe one. They do have subsidized OTC medicines, real cheap stuff, so that's nice if you need to Advil or Neosporin for two dollars cheaper than Rite-Aid. And if you have family-pact, it is one of the places you can visit. But you can also visit Planned Parenthood as well, who will probably have a nicer, discreet and compassionate staff (I recommend the one in Westminster). And if you absolutely have no other choice in medical insurance and must go there, whatever you do, DO NOT GET SEEN BY BONNIE. Just make a special request not to have her. She made me sob and also my best friend cry a couple years ago. So all in all, if possible, stay on yours parent's insurance and/or get a job with insurance, cause this place won't be doing you any favors. read more

The student health service department of CSULB has various departments, such as sexual health, immunization services, small pharmacy, nutrition department. Nutrition department is quite useful for students to talk to a student intern about their nutrition for free. I find that quite useful. When you sit for about an hour of sexual health class, they will give you a prescription for birth controls for free. The class covers very general information that doesn't really help much, except telling you about pap smear & types of birth control. You can have a free condom if you want. Pharmacy is very small but some of the OTC stuff they sell are exeptionally cheap. Too bad, they only sell that cheap stuff to students only. Not a lot of selection and its a very very very small pharmacy that you can see the whole place without turning your head. I feel like the pharmacist wasted her license and studying for a tiny little useless pharmacy though. One of my biggest issue with this location isn't how "nice" the people are, but how well they do their jobs. I got set up with a nurse practitioner who brought in a student with her to take a look at a cyst that I had. When they both saw it, they both "giggle". Its not like i am blind and did not see it. I find that immature even for a nurse practitioner to do that and very unprofessional. Not only she made herself look bad, but she set a very bad example for a student. Conclusion of the visit after being laughed at was, there is nothing we can do and you have to go see someone else. Someone else? Who is that? If i had someone else to go to, i won't be seeing you. If you aren't helpful, at least tell me what kind of professional I should be seeing instead of sending me home empty handed. Another time i went there with to see another self claimed doctor to diagnosis my condition. She made me do some tests of what I thought my symptoms are for and told me it was negative. Well... first of all... I am not a health professional and do not have medical training, why do you listen to what i say? Shouldn't you have a brain for listening to symptoms and maybe test something else that you think it may have been? So the conclusion of my 2nd visit was, it wasn't what you thought and i went home. Well... if i come to you because i don't feel good, there had to be a reason. Honestly... the people they hire can only take care of minor things like colds, fevers and coughs. Well actually I can take care of that myself with OTC. I sometimes think these so called health professionals think that they have a easy time because its a student health center and its just a part time job. If you do feel sick, i suggest you go somewhere else. if you have insurance, don't bother coming here because it would just waste your co pay. Go somewhere else. read more

The level of unprofessionalism here is astounding. Nearly everyone I have encountered here hates their job and treats the patients like stupid little children and makes you feel bad for being there. Once, I came in for contraceptives and the woman (I do not think she was a doctor, she had no knowledge of the differences between BP pills) belittled me and nearly drove me to the point of tears. Then, when I expressed fear of getting the flu shot (fear of needles) she told me that her little daughters never cry when they get shots so I shouldn't. She was just mocking me and expressed no empathy. When I saw the nurse, she was not wearing gloves and was coughing right into her hands and then proceeded to touch me! Not to mention she was obnoxiously smacking her gum the whole time. I was completely in shock. Also, when I was seen for FP services, the woman was just silent and stared at me when I asked questions and created a very awkward environment. No one here cares about the welfare of the people that come in. I have never had a worse healthcare experience in my life. read more

Absolutely terrible service. The people at the front desk and scheduling are nice. But when you get to the actual nurses, they are a joke. I have been many times and each time, the nurses DID NOT ACKNOWLEDGE MY CONCERNS and were extremely unprofessional. I expect quality healthcare, and because it is a school related service, the employees treat many students as children and not as actual clientele. Also, when I finally got to see the nurse practitioner, she came in with FOOD IN HER MOUTH still chewing! I have been here multiple times, and the environment is all too relaxed. Employees are having side conversations and ignoring patients because of it and making us feel uncomfortable. I'm all for a happy work environment, but when employees attitudes and behaviors are interfering with the client's experience, that is when the place gets a bad name. Once again, This has been a multiple time occurrence and I am writing to see that my concerns be addressed before the clinic gets a bad rap dude to it's employees. read more

The front desk people are okay. To be honest, the only nice people there are here are the people working at the front desk. I've come across the same nurses and doctors twice and my opinions about them haven't changed. Just for the sake of anonymity I'm not going to name them directly but if you ever come across the OLDER NURSE and the OLDER DOCTOR (both female) beware their attitudes. No offense but any health service/center should be more polite and hospitable to their patients. The nurse wouldn't let me use the bathroom before taking my blood pressure because she said she was in hurry to finish since I decided to come to my appointment early. Strike 1. And then when the doctor came in she never examined me she just told me what she "THOUGHT" I had, no rational diagnosis. Very unprofessional. At least examine me woman! Strike 2. Then she asked me about my family background and kept correcting me. ME. How are you gonna tell me about my background?! Strike 3. Needless to say, don't get the much older women as your nurse or doctor unless you want to get smart ass remarks from a "professional" practitioner. Honestly the only trip worth making to the SHS is to the pharmacy or for Family Pact Services. Other than that, good luck with trying to get good quality service. read more

The two visits I have been here twice.the first time the receptionist were rude.I was forced to apologize fir asking too many questions.she told me my health care fee at CSULB only covers if I get a cold or a flu,note x-ray was not inuded for free by what my soar advisor said.The second time I needed a pap, I agreed to pay the base fee of 22.00, but doctor refused to do it when she tried saying that I need to do other test with it with or she wouldnt treat me.Which came out close to $200.I felt like I was talking to a car saleman, not a doctor.That worries me about the quality of the University Health Care system, they must be just there for a paycheck.Later, I was told that I wasted their time.I no longer feel comfortable going to the Doctors office on campus because it felt like a car dealership for my body.I reccommend UCLA, their healthcare for non students has actual experienced trained better real Health care professionals. read more
