I really love coming to the store. Everybody's always so friendly and helpful. And the fact that they know me helps a lot.

They have a whole different sale flyer online on their website which I always use and the products shown are always on sale. Manager / Owner came out and said no - I have nothing to do with the CTown online flyer. It's literally the stores zip code. Now I understand why they have such bad ratings. I've lived here since I was 15years old. I wish I never met that manager because I won't ever step foot in this place again. He was nasty, dismissive and obnoxious. Every employee except for one exceptionally nice bagger acts like me being in their presence has single handedly ruined their day. It's not like I'm asking for them to hold my hand and help me shop. I think I just would like to feel like the employees aren't plotting my death when I smile at them. I've been trying to grin & bare it for a year but I'm soooo over it. The food also sucks. It's always gross & over priced, I've never had to return anything to a grocery store in my life, but I find myself having to walk back & return things very often. Such a bummer. I love having a grocery store so close but it's getting to the point where I don't have the energy to deal with these people who quite obviously hate their lives. Bought 2 pints of Häagen-Dazs ice cream yesterday. Both were totally spoiled. Only brought one back as evidence. I assured him that the other one was even worse. Seems like it was melted and refrozen. (Ice Crystals- not smooth & creamy) Spoke to the manager. He had a very, very nasty attitude. He Finally agreed to reimburse me for one of the 2 pints, because I didn't have the other one with me as evidence. Also, I did not have the receipt. But I showed him the record in my Chase credit account. It really felt like he was totally questioning my honesty. My wife and I will never go back to that store. Ever. read more

I don't leave reviews ever but this place is truly terrible. A creepy older man who works there followed me around 2 times and asked me if I needed help and continued to follow me when I said no. The cashiers are quite unpleasant. Acting inconvenienced and making simple mistakes that they will then show agitation towards the customers for. Good luck. This is the worst grocery store I've ever frequented. I've kept trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, but my family has lived a block and half from this place for two years now, and I finally give up. I just got home with a bag of apples that turned out to be rotten, and I'm done. Over the years, I have purchased meat from them three times that reeked when I opened the package, soy sauce that was three months past its expiration date, cut-up mangos that were six days past their sell-by date and rotting, and frozen onion rings that obviously had been allowed to defrost then freeze again in a giant clump. Forget buying fruit- I went for the apples today because they had at least been shipped to the place in a bag. The fruit on the tables is allowed to sit there until it's turning into mush and you have to swat flies away to try to find something edible. They're also great at absurd "sell by" dates on their meat selections. No one in their right mind thinks chicken can sit in the meat section of a store for seven days and still be sellable, but they actually print that on the labels! It's mind-blowing. I'll now be walking several blocks to go to a competently run store, when I would far rather walk right across the street to this one. No more. They simply don't care. It's embarrassing and disrespectful to the people in the neighborhood, not to mention dangerous when you consider people can get sick from what they sell. read more

Really disappointed by the quality of the food. Almost no healthy options! I come here because it's close to home but damn, this place is always so disappointing. I picked up some humus the other day (which was on sale). Came home just to find out that the sell by date was July 30. The consistency of the hummus was disgusting. I was so pissed off that they would even sell something nearly a month past the expiration. I went back a few days later and the manager told me my item is past the return window (48 hours). The audacity! I had the receipt and everything. Not to mention it is illegal to sell food past the sell by date. I was told all they could do for me was an exchange. Lots of mismanagement and crappy options. Everything has high sugar, cholesterol, and fats. Bummer. read more

If I could give less than 1 star I would. Truly one of the worst grocery stores in nyc. I am absolutely fuming! I just took back a dozen eggs that I was charged $7 for. The eggs in question were stacked above a sign that read $3.99 for large, brown organic eggs. When I went back I realized that the eggs that were listed on the sign were no where to be found, but neither was there a sign listing the $7 price tag for the eggs I selected by accident. Sure--maybe the 3.99 organic, large brown eggs were sold out, but where was the sign for the $7 eggs? This is a very common practice at this grocery store. They do little tricks like neglecting to display the price on higher quality items, to placing "on sale" signs next to items that is over-priced but look similar and either not displaying the Phantom "on sale" item at all, or placing the item that is on sale, in a completely different location in the store. This store is across the street from my apartment but I would rather get on the train and travel 20 mins away to shop at Trader Joes on 72nd than to ever step foot in this grocery store ever again. And yes, I can confirm that on top of the bait and switching -- the cashiers are rude and hell! read more

I don't care for this store. I usually go to Trader Joe's or Whole Foods because I think the quality and customer service is much better. I only come here if I'm pressed for time for a "few" items. I find the items overpriced. In this neighborhood, I had a much better experience at Foodtown and KeyFood. But, I have at times been mislead by prices and had to let them know that's not what the sign says. read more

This is a bad store. The veg department is so bad. But overall this store is badly managed. The aisles are dangerous as you cannot pass easily. restocking goes on all day. The workers in the store act as if you are in their way. Really why do these people have jobs. The male checkout personnel are terrible. Such bad attitudes. Their card reader is bad so the Male checker acts like it is my fault. Another time I got a lecture as to what my male checker would put in each of my bags. How can the manager not know what is going on. Key food down the street is pretty bad too but the checkers, mostly female are always great and polite. The rudest cashiers and baggers. Cashier who don't speak and just point and have bad attitudes. The baggers are over age men who don't thank you when you give them a tip (like their owed it). No one tries to speak English and when you ask a question rolls their eyes. My "security" at the door at least said hello. This is not a mom & pop supermarket, it's a chain store and they should be managed and trained correctly. If I have a question about pricing, I shouldn't feel like I'm a bother to you. I will walk to the other supermarkets before I return here. It's bad enough their prices are too high. read more

All the meat that I saw for sale was oxidized and turning brown if it wasn't already disgusting looking. Produce was wrinkly and bruised as hell, likely already in the early stages of rotting. I can't. The tiny aisles, the strange selection (beef tongue/stomach/feet but no tenderloin?), the questionable produce, the not-so-clean feeling ... It's a good place to shop if you're in a pinch, or if you ran out of eggs/milk/pig ears halfway through your recipe. When Jean-Paul Sartre said "Hell is other people," he was standing in line at this C-Town supermarket trying to buy overpriced yogurt at 3:30pm on a weekday. This supermarket illustrates the long-running joke that everything is more expensive in New York City perfectly. $6 for Oreos. $4 for Wishbone salad dressing. REALLY? The quality of the produce is below average, at best. The selection is incredibly limited and it's so difficult to find anything that you have to go back through the aisles over and over again, standing there staring at the shelves... Which returns me to my original point. I believe there is a curse on this C-Town that causes everyone, upon entering it, to turn into rude, grunting Neanderthals. "Excuse me, can I get past?" will almost always merit you a rude glare, if you're lucky enough to get any response at all from the Grocery Zombies who shuffle the aisles slowly casting judgmental looks your way. If you can do your shopping somewhere else, I'd highly recommend it. Somewhere cheaper, somewhere friendlier, somewhere that's green. And no, I'm not talking about the only upside of the C-Town market - the neon green shopping bags. Nice try guys, but it's not enough. read more

One of few markets in the area - may I suggest shopping elsewhere. As soon as I walked in there was a foul strong smell of rotten meat. The veggies looked spoiled, the store was filthy, ceiling to floor, and selections were sparse. I wasn't impressed by the employees either. Why should they be cheerful working under these conditions. The reason I give C-Town 1 star is because I lived in the area for 6 months and this was my local market that I shopped at weekly while 3 jobs. My time was limited. C -Town was consistently horrible and reading the most recent reviews it appears they have made little effort to improve. My advice: spend the occasional taxi fare and save money on healthy, fresh foods and stock up at Trader Joe's & Fairway. Dump this dump and avoid the risk of contamination. This place has a lot of food but some things bother me. The fruit seems to be too expensive compared to other nearby shops. They don't carry grassfed milk. And we bought too much cheese which they wouldn't take back the next day even though we had the reciept. The plus to this place is that its closest to our house but still it opens at 8am compared to Key food which opens at 7am so many mornings when there isnt enough forr breakfast we have to hike down to Key foods to get what we need. read more

Don't shop here, I just left the store. The old Dominican manager with the glasses is one nasty dude. I showed him a bag of grapes with mold on it and he took it and put it right back with the rest. I took it and returned it to him and told him to throw that sh*t away and he goes to dig through the bag to pick out the ones with mold. This C-Town is right beneath where I live, so the rating includes how easy it is for me to just pop in whenever I need to. To me, it's a bit...ah, run down, shall we say, but they have the basic essentials, as well as some not so basics. They've got fruits and veggies that are some days good, some days not, and a good assortment of chilies, fresh and dried. Some produce, like potatoes and onions are kept on the ground, under where other things are watered, so they get soggy and are worthless. Beer - they've been upping the kinds of beer they have, though nothing too exotic yet, they have started carrying Magic Hat #9 , which is good in a pinch. Meats - here's the real interesting section. The general meat quality, like ground beef, steaks and chicken breasts, is like the produce - some days it's good, some days it's gray. The best part about this C-Town's meat section is the offal they carry. Pig's ears, pig's and cow's feet, beef hearts, and Tripe! If you're into some more adventurous cooking, then this is great find, without having to go to a specialty store. read more

No, no, no, no. Please, for the love of God, Buddha, and Allah, NO. I came in for ice cream. They had a small selection which was fine, but when I got to the check out line, there were 5 people standing around chit chatting away, the cashier herself was texting, and they all clearly saw me standing at the register. It wasn't until I put my ice cream down and took out my wallet did they decide to check me out. No one said a word to me the entire time, but they did continue speaking to each other. Not only that, but when I walked in it looked like the place was going out of business. boxes everywhere and empty shelves. Maybe I can during a face lift for the store? I don't know. To make matters worse, I got home and the ice cream looked like it had been completely melted, sat around for a while, and put back in a freezer. I threw the entire thing out. I am somewhat new to NYC (3 years) and I am from a part of the country that has some amazing grocery stores where customer service, convenience, and cleanliness are the norm. After moving to Harlem I realized this is much harder to find and C-Town doesn't offer any of those things Although you see the same Sign at every C-Town and they use the same distributer of products, each is individually owned and operated (sometimes poorly operated). This location has a horrible owner resulting in a nasty store with very poor customer service. In short, I purchased a store brand product that was very poor quality. Unusable for the intended purpose. I took it back a few minutes after purchase with the receipt in order to exchange it for the name brand and pay the difference. The owner, who hardly spoke English wouldn't exchange the product for the name brand and allow me to pay the difference. He would not exchange them for the same thing, and he would not refund the purchase price (under $3.00). His reasoning was that he would have to throw them away. They were defective, I imagine the distributor would have replaced them for the store, but either way it was a short sighted decision. Up until this point, even though the store has very little selection, is dirty, and has poor customer service; it is close to home and has been my grocery store of choice until today. If my long term business is not worth $2.19 then I will simply spend the 7 bucks on a car service to the fairway a few blocks away, where the customer service, cleanliness and selection is exponentially better. It is sad, because most of the customers at the average C-Town grocery store really have no idea what customer service is. They are not accustomed to it and don't miss what they have never had. However, as the neighborhood is gentrified, and people who expect better service come in, there will be fewer customer for C-Town. When a new store opens in the area, one with better service and selection, not only will people like me move to the new store, but the customers who soon realize they are treated better and have better choices will move also. Because of this C-Town will loose more and more market share. I suppose there will always be a small market for chicken feet and other generally undesirable products, and as long as there is, there will be a C-Town. read more

One visit to C-Town's produce section and you can sorta see why Harlem has a much higher prevalence of obesity, heart disease and diabetes. I love fruit and veggies, but when I'm staring at those half-wilted heads of lettuce at C-Town, even I start thinking that maybe fried chicken and mofongo are better options. Yuk. If you love processed food packaged by the big brands, though, then you'll be perfectly happy shopping here. I am very fond of this C-Town. Sure, it is a little grungy, but it's got all the basics and then some. They've even put in a little organic section. Everyone who works there seems very nice, even when some of the shoppers are not. Also, even at its busiest hour, I never had to stand in line too long. read more

C-Town is the reason I want to move! I base my quality of my apartment living in Manhattan by the grocery store that is closest to me. And this one is AWFUL! First off, WHO THE HELL CLOSES AT 8PM IN MANHATTAN?!?!?! Its crazy, I work till 8 and now I have to do my shopping after I get out at the gym at the butt-crack of dawn. Their selection is deplorable! Little choice of healthy options and the vegetation is wilted and MOLDING! I'VE SEEN MOLDED ONION THAT ARE STORED ON THE FLOOR...AND PEOPLE BUY THEM?!?! WTF?! I just feel gross going there, it smells, its dirty, no one speaks English and you get assaulted by the baggers for tips. The closest market is 10 blocks away and I really don't want to have to start going there but I guess I have no better choice. read more

my daughter and i went in for monthly shopping...she lives in the negiborhood...i came up since they had some items on sale....i also live downtown...i have no idea that this place is a "ctown" corporate must never check this store....that day they were not taking ebt,debit,or credit cards ...only cash. i sat with my cart for a least one hour and watched them turn away people with the afore mentioned cards....their excuse was their "specturm" account was down??? the meat section is one you take your chances with....fruits and vegetables...questionable...the young women cashiers are rude and the female assistant manager never knows what she is doing and always has a bad attitude....what a waste of retail space..... read more

This location is one of the worst C-Towns in the city. Hardly anyone speaks english, there are no price tags on any items, and they do not let guests in the store 15 minutes before closing. If you are willing to bear the staff being rude and prices to be higher than they should be, id say take your chances, but any of the other deli stores nearby (or the other C-Town just a couple more blocks up Broadway) have much more friendly staff and cheaper prices. This place is across the street from my apartment and I do not, I cannot shop here. And when I do...thinking it won't be that bad, I am always reminded that it is. The place is uncomfortable. Tiny, very tiny, everything crushed together, half the time they don't bother to restock basic staples. The staff is RUDE, so very rude. Especially the people behind the deli counter. They act as if they are doing you a huge favor by acknowledging you and then more than half the time they are out of basic things that any person would ask for (and also are advertised on their menu) and are completely apologetic about it, as if they are perfectly entitled to be out of everything. I once went there at 11:00 am and went to the deli and the man behind the counter refused to serve me because he said he was too busy cutting up chicken and I'd have to come back in an hour if I wanted to use the deli. Again, this was 11:00 in the morning when ah...most people use the deli. A few weeks ago I went there with my four year old, the bagger bagged my groceries and when I returned it turned out three things didn't make it into the bag. Today I went there, waited in a line only to be told five minutes in that the line was cash only. I then waited on another line and then that line became cash only. Then the whole store broke as far as I can tell and everything was cash only. This might seem like a once in a very great while glitch and at another store I would be perfectly happy to believe that, but not here. Here this is what happens. Totally mismanaged. Not only that but the staff really does act as if it's perfectly ok that they treat their customers like crap. read more
