I was visiting Phoenix for one week and found this Cuban gem! Being Cuban myself, I was naturally drawn to it. I was warmly welcomed by Anita the owner. Anita and her husband are extremely hospital and filled with love and compassion at what they do. The selection is wide. And it's a bakery as well! Cuban bread is unique and very hard to find, as it's not made like other breads are. For this reason their Cuban sandwich is the best in Phoenix! I felt like I was at home with that warm nostalgic feeling of Cuba. All their dishes are to die for. From the ropa vieja to the bistec empanizado. Their papa rellenas, tostones/maduros and croquetas are a must try. Since they are a bakery they make fresh loafs daily. As well as pastelitos de coco, güayaba and güayaba con queso. Their pastelitos de carne (meat pastries are a special order item). Anything Cuban they have. And it's superb and made to order fresh! Their cafecitos are so good, you will never go back to Starbucks. Go to go by yourself or with a large party as well. The food was excellent. I had the bistec encebollado (steak and onions), rice and beans (moros y cristianos), yuca frita and to drink a delicious mango smoothie.. Holy Cuban sandwich!!!! My husband and I took a journey across town to see what became of metro center. We noticed on the map that there was a Cuban restaurant a mile away so we had to go! It's in a relatively abandoned strip mall and If you drive too fast you could miss it, I'm not sure you can even see it from the street, you kind of have to know it's there and MAN do people know!!!' FOOD Had to start with the empanadas which were soo good and great flavor in the meat, I LOVE Cuban sandwiches but have failed to find a halfway decent one in Arizona. When we were in Miami and Key West I ate my weight in Cuban sandwiches so that's my gold standard! This one is just as good if not better! Advised it was big but we each ordered one anyway and big is an understatement they were huge! Roasted pork delicious and juicy, ham and Swiss. Just the right about of mustard not to overpower it and the right amount of pickles to also enhance but not overpower the flavor. The Cuban bread DELICIOUS! This was our first time stopping in. It's in an unassuming stretch of mini mall and there are a few empty businesses around it. The ambiance isn't anything worth writing about. It was clean and cool inside (near 112 degrees outside) so that was good. The service was friendly but subpar. We were never offered a refill on water and our drinks. But she was nice! Food was good! If we come back, I don't know that I'd sit down at a table since the service wasn't very attentive. But would definitely come back to try another sandwich or some other items from their larger menu. I had the pan con bistec, and the Mr had a Cubano. The ingredients tasted really fresh and the meat was good quality. Fries were not great so would not go out of my way to get those again. On our way out, we grabbed a slice of cake to go. Cake was pretty good (but not spectacular) so would probably try something else next time. Ambiance is like that of a family run place. Clean and nicely done. The service is fast and friendly. The menu covers all the Cuban classics. We opted for Ropa Vieja and the Cuban sandwich. Going to get the Negatives out of the way first, so I can rave about the food. Ambiance: Small little hidden holeinthewall place in a strip mall in the middle of nowhere so we went in with few expectations other than other reviews we have read. it's much more akin to a deli/bakery than a restaurant. There are a few tables but I think it's much more suited for takeaway then for a full sit down meal. Nothing that would truly detract from the experience though, just neutral. Service: Was middling, and the only true detractor of our stay. The waitress was nice enough but she seemed to be the only one working (other than cooks) and we barely saw her. Food: the real reason you go here. The food was really quite delicious. Slightly greasy, a little fatty but not overwhelmingly so, the flavor and punch of The Cubano was a treat. It is really only a few ingredients (ham, pork, pickle, mustard) but they really pull a ton of flavor out of each ingredient. This being my first time here, I wanted to try their "staple" before i ventured off into more adventurous dishes. The Pan Con Bistec was very good too. Fries were serviceable but could be crispier. The serving size was HUGE. we ended up taking half the sandwich home to enjoy later. I can't wait to see what other food they have to offer next time I come in. After having really good Cuban food in Miami we decided to try this place out in search of our favorite meal, ropa vieja and for Cuban coffee- which we have fell for. This place is in a somewhat scattered and abandoned plaza with a Ross next door and and ample parking lot. We walked in and were not quickly greeted, but instead were kind of oddly stared at by the cashier lady. Maybe we weren't their regular customers? Or maybe she was shy? I am not sure. But it is a place where you sit down where you want, and she came out and we ordered two Cuban coffees and the ropa vieja meal. I did have to ask for water twice. But we did enjoy our meal. The Cuban coffee was very strong- which is how we liked it. They had you pour your own sugar which was different than what we had in Miami but it was good. The ropa vieja was also really good, but it seemed a bit less tomato-y comparably. The rice and beans were also good and we enjoyed our meal. I took home some pastries and the guava and coconut creme tarts are so good. I would recommend it. The restaurant seems to have a fair amount of tables inside to sit and a couple of booths inside. If you're looking for authentic Cuban food, this is your place! The Cuban sandwich is incredible. Love the sweet plantains and the croquetas de jamón are yummy. I forgot to take a picture of the flan that I had with my Cuban coffee cause it was devoured instantly! Very relaxed atmosphere. The prices are inexpensive for all the food you get. Great value! I am from South Florida and love great Cuban food which is lacking here in Arizona unfortunately. I must say that this small Cuban restaurant in Glendale has great food and is truly a diamond in the rough. We loved it and will definitely be back again. The owner is from Cuba and lived in South Florida for a few years before moving to Arizona. I did suggest that he should expand the menu to include more Cuban food favorites that are great. I decided to go out of my ordinary getting lechon or a Cubano sandwich, and instead, I ordered the Filete Relleno. This was shrimp stuffed fish and to make it even better, it was fried to perfection. I wanted to take some home to enjoy it later but my husband "stole" what seemed like half of it under the conviction that since it was fried, it wouldn't last well going home. Granted I'm not even a huge fan of fried foods purely because I feel guilty eating them, but the fried foods here were totally worth it. Moments later a server arrived to take the drink order. While the wait to place a food order took several minutes, given the steady stream of Customers arriving for their take out orders, the server was apologetic. The Empanadas de Carne were good. They were served hot, but light in color. They seemed baked, not fried. The Sandwich Cubano portion was large and shareable. It was filled with shredded meat which was flavorful, but a bit salty for my taste. It seemed freshly prepared, though the sliced ham was still cold from the refrigerator. The French Fries were served hot, but also light in color. The dining room was neat and clean. The restroom was, as well, though had no hot water or toilet seat covers. We live a solid hour away from this restaurant and the food is totally worth the long drive. My wife is Cubana and she says this is as close to home cooking as you're going to find in AZ. I like that the dishes they serve are traditional...none of that modern fusion stuff. My favorite dish is the bistec (beef) empanizado. This place is one of those you'd drive past thinking it wasn't much, but it's so much more than it's look! You walk in, it's small, nothing special about it, so we sat at a booth. This is the perfect example of a place that has lost its love for food. I got a media noche sandwich it has 1 thin piece of cold ham, 1 piece of cold cheese and a few bits of pork. My partner had a pan con bistec with lettuce and tomatoes which was great except that the lettuce was thicker than the steak. We both got two cafe con leche, both came out like warm. The maduros were ok but definitely not worth the 60.00 price tag for this meal. Even worse is we drove over an hour to get here! As a Cuban, I am so disappointed with this establishment.
