After having really good Cuban food in Miami we decided to try this place out in search of our favorite meal, ropa vieja and for Cuban coffee- which we have fell for. The Cuban coffee was very strong- which is how we liked it. They had you pour your own sugar which was different than what we had in Miami but it was good. The ropa vieja was also really good, but it seemed a bit less tomato-y comparably. The rice and beans were also good and we enjoyed our meal. I took home some pastries and the guava and coconut creme tarts are so good. I would recommend it. Going to get the Negatives out of the way first, so I can rave about the food. It is really only a few ingredients (ham, pork, pickle, mustard) but they really pull a ton of flavor out of each ingredient. This being my first time here, I wanted to try their "staple" before i ventured off into more adventurous dishes. The Pan Con Bistec was very good too. Fries were serviceable but could be crispier. I grew up in Florida before moving to Phx. They are the most authentic Cuban restaurant and bakery in the valley no question about it. And for those who know, this is a Miami style Cuban restaurant not a Tampa style. (The Cuban sandwich does not have salami that's what makes it Miami style.) I am from South Florida and love great Cuban food which is lacking here in Arizona unfortunately. I must say that this small Cuban restaurant in Glendale has great food and is truly a diamond in the rough. We loved it and will definitely be back again. The owner is from Cuba and lived in South Florida for a few years before moving to Arizona. I did suggest that he should expand the menu to include more Cuban food favorites that are great. That probably would've been enough to eat but wait there's more! My husband and also our friend both ordered the lechones plate with black bean rice and plantains (hold the salad). I decided to go out of my ordinary getting lechon or a Cubano sandwich, and instead, I ordered the Filete Relleno. This was shrimp stuffed fish and to make it even better, it was fried to perfection. I wanted to take some home to enjoy it later but my husband "stole" what seemed like half of it under the conviction that since it was fried, it wouldn't last well going home. Granted I'm not even a huge fan of fried foods purely because I feel guilty eating them, but the fried foods here were totally worth it. Do you ever have that list of "worth it" foods that you give yourself permission to enjoy? Well, most items here meet those qualifications! ....which brings me to dessert. We live a solid hour away from this restaurant and the food is totally worth the long drive. My wife is Cubana and she says this is as close to home cooking as you're going to find in AZ. I like that the dishes they serve are traditional...none of that modern fusion stuff. My favorite dish is the bistec (beef) empanizado. Never having been there before and driving a considerable distance, anticipating an amazing Cuban sandwich, we were SO disappointed! The pulled pork was dry, tasteless, cold, and clearly store bought. And there was just a sprinkling of the pork inside the bread, which I suppose was a blessing because it was so bad. The razor thin Swiss cheese was processed cheese as it had no holes and it wasn't melted at all, as it should be. The razor thin slice of ham was also processed sandwich meat. There were only 2 little pickle slices and barely a swipe of mustard. The bread was not pressed in butter, like it's supposed to be. It was bone dry. The sandwich looks big, but it was more bread than anything else. We did not eat much of it. We asked for water. It came room temperature with no ice, and the server never returned to our table after putting down our plates. Because she never returned, we had to get up and go to the bakery counter to ask for our bill. We are dumbfounded by the number of good reviews. We will not return. read more
