    Pan con Bistec
    Catharine M.

This was our first time stopping in. It's in an unassuming stretch of mini mall and there are a few empty businesses around it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance isn't anything worth writing about. It was clean and cool inside (near 112 degrees outside) so that was good.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was friendly but subpar. We were never offered a refill on water and our drinks. But she was nice! Food was good! If we come back, I don't know that I'd sit down at a table since the service wasn't very attentive. But would definitely come back to try another sandwich or some other items from their larger menu. I had the pan con bistec, and the Mr had a Cubano. The ingredients tasted really fresh and the meat was good quality. Fries were not great so would not go out of my way to get those again. On our way out, we grabbed a slice of cake to go. Cake was pretty good (but not spectacular) so would probably try something else next time. Overall, would come here again (but would get takeout rather than sit down) and would split a sandwich since portions are BIG!

We went here. The food not the same. The beans the rice were overcooked & not real black beans. The steak was dry & hard to eat.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance is like that of a family run place. Clean and nicely done.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service is fast and friendly. The menu covers all the Cuban classics. We opted for Ropa Vieja and the Cuban sandwich. Both were excellent. Good portion size and reasonable prices. The Ropa Vieja had great flavor and taste. The beans and rice were very good as well. The Cuban sandwich is large! We took half of it home. Would recommend, would return. N*joy!

Wow what a treat!! It's always a gift to find quality home food. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Everything was wonderful here and it truly felt like home for me.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The sandwich was huge!! Will definitely be coming back again The food was great and the coffee was superb. Been wanting good coffee for a while so I was very happy about that. Service was great.

I'm picky about cuban food and this was surprisingly good. Definitely gonna make it one of my go-to restaurants.

If you're looking for authentic Cuban food, this is your place! The Cuban sandwich is incredible. Love the sweet plantains and the croquetas de jamón are yummy. I forgot to take a picture of the flan that I had with my Cuban coffee cause it was devoured instantly! Very relaxed atmosphere. The prices are inexpensive for all the food you get. Great value! All the servers are nice and you really don't ever feel rushed. Been coming here for years & will be for as long as they're around. 10/10

Cuban sandwich with Cuban coffee. Perfect way to power your day. Very friendly staff offering excellent authentic Cuban food.

Best Cuban coffee & sandwich I've had since Ybor City. Very friendly staff offering excellent foods and don't get me started on the bakery. Honestly,I don't know why everybody here doesn't weigh 400 pounds. Go ahead try their Flan. You've never had it so good.

Flan, sorry, already had a bite, y cafe Cubano!!

Excellent authentic Cuban food!! Service was wonderful. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a kinda a hole in the wall, but do not let that fool you![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

    Yucca fried with garlic oil

If flavor is what you desire, look no further. Your prayers have been answered. This restaurant is what I imagined Cuban home cooked meals would be, but insanely better. We ordered the tostones with shredded beef, fried yucca served with garlic oil, and beef empanadas as appetizers. So much goodness to be found! That probably would've been enough to eat but wait there's more! My husband and also our friend both ordered the lechones plate with black bean rice and plantains (hold the salad). I decided to go out of my ordinary getting lechon or a Cubano sandwich, and instead, I ordered the Filete Relleno. This was shrimp stuffed fish and to make it even better, it was fried to perfection. I wanted to take some home to enjoy it later but my husband "stole" what seemed like half of it under the conviction that since it was fried, it wouldn't last well going home. Granted I'm not even a huge fan of fried foods purely because I feel guilty eating them, but the fried foods here were totally worth it. Do you ever have that list of "worth it" foods that you give yourself permission to enjoy? Well, most items here meet those qualifications! ....which brings me to dessert. I couldn't decide on 1 so I ordered 4! Flan, and variations of flan and other cakes. My dessert tummy was on attack! The questions is not if I'm going back here. It is more of a question when. I really love this place!

    Ham croquettes

I was extremely surprised by this restaurant, the service was great and friendly. Such a simple looking restaurant in a strip mall. The food prices and portions are so great. The ham croquettes were yummy, and the Cubano was so good and simple that it worked great together. I didn't get to try the desserts as I was full but I definitely want to go back to try some.

We seated ourselves at a booth since it wasn't quite busy and that just means more room for our food and drinks to spread out *teehee* The cocktails were amazing my cousin ordered the espresso martini which she loved they make the espresso fresh. I went with a gin cocktail that had coconut flavors something I would never consider with gin but if you read my reviews you know gin is my preferred spirit. It was so good! For two people we ordered three types of empanadas we probably could have gotten away with two flavors and maybe a lighter tapa or desert but really wanted to try the cheese and guava empanada and didn't want that to be a main option in case we didn't like it. Needless to say we really liked all three: picadillo, arroz con pollo and guava and cheese - the picadillo was the favorite however both for the inside flavor and the accompanying dip. Pricing is not bad I'd say the serving and size of the three empanadas for $14 is a great price.

Since then they have removed the plantain chips and still offer mashed plantains...and a very small serving. I ordered a cuban sandwich which was good but I guess I expected it to look more appealing on a plate such as with garnish. Since it was the middle of June it was already hot outside at a cool 105 degrees temperature. We were surprised to see the restaurant had the front door propped completely open letting the hot air into the restaurant. Since this is a small restaurant you really couldn't escape the heat. The heat unfortunately caused us to leave after a short while.

The restaurant ambiance is classy yet relaxed, not overly stuffy, but visually clean and inviting,…read morelike you feel better about yourself when walking in somehow. You know you are in for a true fine dining experience. We started off with some cocktails and I was very impressed with the clear ice cube in my Smokey Old Fashioned as it was branded with the "Toro" logo. It was so smooth and probably the best Old Fashioned I ever had, so I had 3 more! My wife throughly enjoyed her Espresso Martinis also. I started off with the Grilled Octopus and nearly cried because it was so good. This is a food favorite of mine and although I love the flavors, most restaurants over cook it and you need to cut it with a steak knife. Not this dish, no knife necessary, your fork will do. So tender, so flavorful, so amazingly delicious. The Mrs. ordered the crispy calamari and was thoroughly impressed as the texture was what fresh calamari should be and not the rubbery texture you get from 8 out of 10 other places. Seasoned to perfection with spices but not overly spicy. My wife can't bear spicy anymore , but she really enjoyed it. I finished it for her of course, because she always remembers to leave room for desert and never finishes anything. And I'm glad because I always get to taste her meals too. It's a win-win for me! I then had an off-the-hook Ceviches that rivaled my own. I am also a part-time cook and also wrote a cookbook. Ceviche is a particular dish that I compare to other restaurants and until now, never found another place that compares to mine. Toro doesn't disappoint my friends. Now for the entrée, Lomo Saltado for myself and a medium rare Ribeye for the Mrs. The Lomo Saltado was beef tenderloin on creamy rice, crispy potato, heirloom tomato, bell peppers, Rocoto Aioli and a Chifa Soy Sauce. It was mouth watering. The beef tenderloin was cooked a little on the well done side, but my bad for not specifying to cook it medium rare. It was still amazing and not a big enough deal to even mention it in the review, but I just want you to specify your preference when you order yours. My wife had the 14 Oz. Ribeye, medium rare ( she thought it was also medium but I found it to be medium rare myself) it was soooo good. She had a side dish of Crispy Brussels sprouts that were unworldy. We never had Brussels sprouts that good, it must be the sherry vinagrette and cotija cheese. Unreal. I had a side of shishito peppers that made my heart happy. My favorite peppers are not usually available everywhere so it was a real bonus to the meal. Desert, well the desert was worth the wait. We both ordered the Ube Basque Cheesecake. It is a dark purple colored slice of heaven with masa crumble, Yuzu espuma and coconut jam. The presentation was stunning. We even enjoyed espresso with sambucca to finish our dining experience. How many places offer espresso on their menu just to inform you the espresso machine isn't working? Just another bonus for us. Price wise, what you would expect for a high-end restaurant in a beautiful resort area of Scottsdale, no sticker shock there, but still, I'd save this place as a never can fail go to for a first date, anniversary, job promotion, marriage proposal, special occasion restaurant. They also do breakfast, brunch, lunch and Happy Hour. I hope you get to experience this place at least once. Put it on your bucket list, you'll be glad you did!

Also the complementary cheese bread was good, also the ginger shots. We got the churrasco, it had alittle bit of everything. Wish the meat was cooked alittle bit more cause it looked raw. Also wish it was hotter the food. The sausage had no flavor. We got Brussel sprouts and the mac and cheese were good. Also got a complementary dessert , chose the brownie and it was to bitter, tasted like dark chocolate. There was a fire dancer too. The server was nice.

The restaurant is a very good size with lots of room and tables available. The decor is that of PR culture which is very colorful and bright. We started off with canoa which is a plantain stuffed with ground beef and cheese. It was very hot and delicious! For our "platos principals" (main entrees) I had the pechuga de pollo (chicken breast with grilled onions) with mofongo as my side (also comes with a side salad). It was very tasty and not dry at all. BFF had the pernil (pulled pork) with arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas) as his side which also came with a side salad. For dessert we shared the tembleque which is a coconut pudding but not in the traditional sense of pudding (more like a jelly texture). BFF also ordered coquito (holiday rum drink) & apparently our server (Sophia) omitted the rum so the owner came by and offered a fresh glass. Speaking of, everything was wonderful except that Sophia seemed to have a bit of a poor attitude as she wasn't too friendly. I'd like to give her the benefit of the doubt as perhaps she wasn't feeling well but out of the corner of my eye she had this almost "eyeroll" look. Perhaps she just didn't want to be there (she was friendly upon us leaving and thanked us). Anyway, I highly recommend this establishment. Both food and ambience was great and the service was too.
