    Patate Pizza

Cugini Restaurant will always have my heart. I love frequenting Solano Ave. in Berkeley and with the recent Solano Stroll, it was so exciting to see the entire Solano Ave. shut down and filled with life. So many families, businesses, and community moments celebrating local. Cugini offered Al fresco dining for the stroll and it was really great to be able to sit outside, people watch, enjoy the festival, while having a delicious (and special) lunch spread. The staff was truly amazing on such a busy day and ensured everything was set for our little to enjoy their time as well. We ordered a few house margaritas drink-wise, and the Fritti Plate, Homemade Meatball, and Classic Caesar to start. We also ordered one of each personal pizza options including the Margherita, Pepperoni, Sausage, and Patete (potato). Everything came incredibly timely and efficient. The homemade meatball presentation was unique and created table fun (and photos), the Caesar was crisp and fresh, and the pizzas were absolutely perfect. Crisp, flavorful, and just the right amount of food. In the Fritti Plate, there were churros, a fun surprise for a nice way to end the meal. Overall, would love to come back for lunch or dinner here. Fair pricing, outside of the stroll there is typically metered parking on Solano, and great energy. We can't wait to come back!

They ran out of scallops risotto so I subbed for prawns

Located on the popular destination known as Solano Ave in Albany. Parking can be scarce but there's plenty of street parking available on the side roads, if necessary. The decor is golden era film poster style pictures and simple table seating. Dim lighting and casual attire. I've been here a handful of times now and haven't been let down yet. This last experience, I ordered the risotto with scallops but they ran out of scallops so I requested prawns instead. The grill on the prawns was exceptional and the risotto wasn't bad at all.. one of the members in our party ordered the salmon dish and had zero complaints. The only thing I can mention that wasn't ideal to the evening was the seafood penne was a bit chewy/overcooked. They may have threw the seafood in too early resulting in the mishap but i won't take a star away. We actually had 2 orders of the penne that were identically over. Our lovely waitress took it off of the bill and gave a sincere apology. She offered us to order something else being that the plates were nearly untouched. Our night was coming to an end so we just paid the tab and went on our way. We made sure to let our waitress know that we will definitely be frequenting this place again and we understand that it wasn't her fault. Things happen and we enjoy this restaurant..

The service was terrible. People who came 15 minutes after us got their pasta before us. If the food we ordered was a dish that takes longer to prepare, they should have let us know before hand. The crabcakes appetizer took 20 minutes to bring out, and it was probably the only good thing on the menu. We waited another 20 minutes for the main dishes. My husband's linguine clams was sitting in sauce, and it tasted like wine instead of red sauce. I ordered scallops risotto, it was awful. It had no sauce, no flavor, and it was mushy paste. My scallops were brown and looked like they were deep fried instead of being seared in a pan. Trader Joes Scallop Risotto is a 10 compared to this place: at least it has flavor. The food I had Cugini was the worst Italian food I ever had and the waiter was terrible. The bartender gave better service and we didn't even order drinks. This place is over priced and the food is not worthy of the wait. We will see what our chickens have to say about the leftovers.

The food, ambiance and service is second to none. Jenny and I have had most of what Cugini has on their menu. We have never had a bad meal. Armando and Becka are always at their best, making you feel at home. Stephanie, Mia, Angel, Marco and Jesus work as a team in making sure all of their guests are taken care of. Thank you Armamdo for making the best Martinis in town. Simply fabulous place. Love you guys.

Quaint Italian restaurant on Solano Ave. we were seated quickly but the the remainder of the service was a bit slow and it was not that busy on a Tuesday night. The restaurant was a bit noisy, so not a great place for conversation. The food was good, nice size portions. They brought fresh bread with balsamic and olive oil. I would for sure come back

Ordered slices of pepperoni, Julian, and Spinaci Aglio. All were amazing. Thin, crisp crust, tangy pizza sauce, good olive oil, great cheese pull. Simple ingredients coming together for a satisfying and piping hot bite. Pepperoni drips with the golden orange oil, characteristic of a solid pep slice. Spinaci has just enough garlic that works perfectly with the mild spinach. The star of Julian is the near crunchy kale complemented by pops of sausage. It's our neighborhood go-to, and we eat here at least once a week because the pizza is truly excellent. For nearly two decades, the staff was always friendly, but over the last couple of years, the front-of-house service has drastically gone downhill. The people taking the orders consistently seem like they don't want to be there. I've been overlooking the cold attitude for a while now because we love the food, but my experience today was the last straw. I ordered a whole pie and politely asked to have it double-sliced. The cashier looked visibly annoyed by a simple, standard request. It got worse when the pizza was ready: after she handed me the box, I kindly asked for a few paper plates. She literally threw the plates at me with a glaring look of unhappiness. I was honestly in shock by her behavior. Stunned, I asked her what her name was, and she flat-out refused to tell me. There is absolutely no reason to treat a regular, polite customer with that level of hostility over plates and a name request. I believe people need to be held accountable for how they treat others, especially in customer service. Looking at other recent reviews, I see that I'm definitely not the only one feeling this way. Gioia has been one of our absolute favorite pizzerias in Berkeley for over 20 years, but it's a shame to see a great neighborhood spot ruined by the attitude of the people taking orders. I am truly hoping management and the owners will read this and take real action. The food is still great, but the toxic energy at the front counter is ruining the experience, and loyal customers shouldn't be treated like an inconvenience. This incident happened today at 1130am.

The biggest issue was that the food no longer seemed to have the same level of care and quality. The spicy Caesar, which I had enjoyed in the past, was surprisingly flavorless. The mushroom pizza was decent, but it was overly charred and lacked the balance and attention to detail that once made it stand out. It wasn't bad--it just wasn't exceptional, especially for the price. What made the experience more frustrating is that the prices haven't reflected this decline in quality. Even my spritz felt skimpy, with the glass mostly filled with ice. The service didn't help. To be fair, the staff have never been particularly warm or attentive, even during the years when I loved the food, so that wasn't new. The difference is that when the food was outstanding, it was easy to overlook the indifferent service. Now that the quality seems to have slipped, it stands out much more. Nine months ago, I would have enthusiastically given this place five stars. Now it feels like corners are being cut while the pricing remains the same. I hope this was an off night, but based on this visit, it's no longer the restaurant I used to rave about and will no longer recommend.

The location is excellent. It's within walking distance of UC Berkeley, just a minute from Downtown Berkeley BART, and there's a public parking garage a block away. Another nice touch is the market next door. They sell pizza by the slice, snacks, and drinks. I would've been there 100% during my college days. The customer service was outstanding. Everyone was genuinely friendly, welcoming, and happy to answer questions. The atmosphere was warm, clean, and inviting. You can watch the pizzas being made, and there's also a TV if you want to catch a game while you eat. It had a relaxed neighborhood feel that made us want to stay a little longer. Having delivered for Round Table back in the '90s, I have an appreciation for the flow of a pizza operation. Everything felt organized and efficient. We started with the Chicories & Beets salad. It was fresh, crisp, and a perfect way to start the meal. We ordered the 18" NY Ray J and Detroit The Standard. Detroit The Standard was my favorite. The crispy, caramelized cheese edges were incredible, while the inside stayed light and airy. The mushrooms were perfectly cooked, not soggy at all. Every topping tasted fresh, and the balance of pepperoni, sausage, onions, olives, and sauce was spot on. The NY Ray J was just as impressive. The crust had the perfect balance of crispiness and chew, making it easy to fold. The combination of thin and thick pepperoni, creamy burrata, fresh basil, fermented honey, and Parmigiano Reggiano was outstanding. Every slice came with a great cheese pull. Both pizzas had crispy crusts, fresh toppings, quality ingredients, and just the right amount of sauce. We left feeling satisfied, not heavy or bloated. We visited on a Wednesday, and by dinner time the restaurant was full. That's always a good sign. One of the highlights of the visit was chatting with Chef Laura about dough, ingredients, and technique. It gave me an even greater appreciation for the attention to detail that goes into every pizza, and I picked up a few ideas that will definitely improve my homemade pizza game. I'm actually eating the leftovers as I write this review. They reheat beautifully. The crust stays crispy, the toppings still taste fresh, and they're just as satisfying the next day. We'll definitely be back to try more of the menu. Whether you're a Berkeley local or just passing through, Pizzeria da Laura is absolutely worth the trip.

We were greeted by the friendliest server (a tall guy with curly hair whose name I unfortunately didn't get but shout-out to him) who asked us if we had any questions about the menu. My friend and I had already glanced at the menu when we checked in with the host, so we pretty much knew what we wanted. I did ask our server about crust options though and ended up going with the New York style because I didn't have the stomach capacity for the slightly thicker options like Detroit but perhaps next time with a bigger group! We ordered The Standard, which seemed like a good choice because of the diverse, balanced toppings, and the chicories & beets salad. The salad arrived quickly, and the pizza was brought to our table soon after. I liked how refreshing and crisp the salad was, but the pizza was really what I wanted. It was everything I wanted in a pizza - definitely the best choice of the lineup imo. The crust was so soft and pillowy I couldn't resist devouring it all and leaving no trace. I'm very much a crust gal. Glad the plan to hit up Rose Pizzeria didn't work out so that we could discover this gem. With the various styles of pizza options available, there's sure to be something from the menu for everyone here!

Simple, restrained, and incredibly well executed. It was an unusually warm evening, so I opted to sit outside. My only real complaint is that the tables closest to the street sit noticeably on a slant, making it a bit of a challenge to keep plates and glasses from slowly sliding downhill throughout the meal. And: Lately the chopped salad has been presented in a plastic takeout box with the ingredients separated into other plastic containers. This leaves the customer to basically create the salad from the ingredients, then deal with a bunch of plastic waste. Better to go back to the old method: compostable box with the ingredients tossed by Benchmark, giving the customer the option to have Benchmark toss the dressing or do it themselves. When I order an expensive salad, I expect a salad, not a collection of separate ingredients for me to mix myself. And the plastic detracts from the experience and adds waste to the environment.
