I stopped at this restaurant around 1pm for a late lunch as I thought it looked nice from the exterior on Main Street in Downtown Ann Arbor. I was surprised when I went in that there were only a couple of customers leaving as I entered. I was greeted by Dewey at the counter who asked me if I have previously tried any Peruvian food and I answered I had not. He was kind and suggested a couple of his favorites to me which was very helpful and appreciated. I ordered the Lomo Saltado and a Mexican Coke. They had several photos underneath the entrees which was helpful for ordering and visualizing. I decided to sit at a bar stool which had a counter seat at the front window overlooking Main Street which was an interesting vantage point while eating. The food was served fairly quickly and the Lomo Saltado was delicious. The beef was very tasty and served with vegetables and rice and the flavors and spices were just right for my taste. I devoured this dish quickly, ate everything, and mentioned to Dewey that I didn't like that at all with a big smile and laugh as I was dropping off my spotless dirty dishes even though he mentioned I could just leave it. I've been to Peru and had many of these dishes firsthand, so I came in with high expectations. While it doesn't quite compare to what I had there, I still find myself coming back regularly because there's really nothing else quite like it in Ann Arbor. The Culantro Bowl is a great deal, the ají de gallina is great comfort food, and I really love the lomo saltado. I also always get either the jugo de maracuyá or chicha morada to drink. The ceviche was good, though the texture wasn't my favorite personally. I also wasn't a fan of the empanadas since they were sweeter than I'm used to. However, the plantains starter was quite good. The atmosphere is modern, clean, and comfortable, and the service has always been excellent. One of the main servers even remembers my name because I've been coming for so long. Overall, it's not the best Peruvian food I've ever had, but it gives me a nostalgic taste of Peru in Ann Arbor and has definitely become a staple for me. Parking was pretty easy to find on a Sunday. We ordered different dishes and I can't remember all the names but I included pictures in this review. Their passion fruit juice was delicious!! However, I was disappointed with the beef on fries dish with chimichurri and garlic sauce. The sauces were great but the beef was soo dry. Every time I bit into it, I was met with a soft but super dry texture and it grossed me out. Their chicken dish was good. The chicken was very tender and easy to chew (it was a little too pink so I doubted if it was fully cooked). The best part about the dish was the green sauce. We also tried their dessert powdered cookie and it was really good! Honestly, I have had better Peruvian food elsewhere and was disappointed with the quality here. read more

My old classmate, Fiorella, still lives in AA and has been teaching us about true Peruvian cuisine. She's cooked for us several times now and I'm starting to understand the true power and flavour of authentic Peruvian fare. Our original exposure to Culantro was not very long ago in Ferndale. As it turns out, all of our takes were inaccurate. Something that was confirmed on today's visit. The empanadas were like biting into a pastry filled with only mild meat. No Black olives, egg or raisins. Disappointing. The ceviche (tilapia) had little flavour and zero spice. A boring waste of money. Is it possible to dilute fish? We've learned this is a dish that requires fresh fish. Today definitely was not. The atmosphere is pleasant and comforting and the only thing netting this place 1 star. It's bittersweet. We assumed on our earlier visit to the other location and sampling this food, bland as it was, was authentic. The experience here was phenomenal. I had a nice conversation with someone I assume is the business owner. This restaurant deserves any attention it can get, as it's one of the only genuine Latin American food spots in the area. The ambience was nice and modern. A good layout, for ordering your food and sitting down. The staff was very friendly. Most importantly, the food is absolutely delicious. Having eaten Peruvian cuisine multiple times, I can say that this is one of the best that I've tasted. We tried multiple things, and I can't say that they have anything bad on their menu. We had a bizarre experience with a very rude staff member. I asked to order the #10 (steak bites and fries with chimichurri and garlic sauce) for my 8-year-old son, but with the sauces on the side. The guy smirked and snapped back that they "couldn't do that," claiming it was the "owner's rule." I even asked again to clarify that they were refusing to serve it without drizzling the sauce on top, and he said yes. When my son came back from the bathroom, I decided to just order it anyway. He rang it up, we paid for all five meals, and food came out quickly for everyone except my son. After several minutes of him sitting with no food, I went back up and asked. The same staffer said he "didn't realize" we had ordered it--even though it was on the receipt we had already paid for. Then, oddly enough, he finally brought it out with the sauces on the side, which is exactly what he had rudely refused earlier. The food itself was good, and I don't doubt the ownership is fine, but this staff member's attitude and behavior really soured the entire experience for us. read more

Meh. I visited a friend in Ann Arbor, and we wanted to try the new Peruvian restaurant that opened up. I've had a good amount of Peruvian food in the DMV (definitely no expert) and this was my friend's first time. You can order up front at the register and they'll give you a number to take to an empty table and bring you your food when it's ready. AJI DE GALLINA - 13 This is my third time having aji de gallina, so I definitely don't know what is authentic and what isn't. I personally didn't like this one as much as the two I've had before. I found this one to have way too much sauce, which had the consistency of clotted cream (dense and thick). The creamy yellow sauce had a strong onion taste, but I felt like it was lacking in the pepper and nutty flavors. It didn't really elevate the chicken, which were shredded in big pieces. Overall, I didn't like this and neither did my friend. The bed of rice on the side was lightly seasoned, which I enjoyed more. YUCA FRITAS - 6 My friend got an order of these for us to share. Their shape and coloring were pretty sad, like they've been left out for more than half a day and forgotten. The flavors were fine, but the yuca fries were a bit stale. The aji rocoto sauce was OK. My friend got a POLLO A LA BRASA for himself and was pretty unimpressed. He thought this wasn't too much better than the rotisserie chicken from Costco. The chicken was pretty dry even though it was dark meat. He did say the skin was crispy and well-seasoned. Overall, pretty mediocre experience. I can't speak to the authenticity of this food since I've never visited Peru or had it before. My friend who dined with me lived in Peru while serving in the Peace Corps and was impressed and said the food here was better than a lot of what she ate there, for what it's worth. I ordered the Chicha Morada drink hoping it wouldn't be too sweet, but only ended up drinking half of it. It kind of tastes like a Christmas punch, with a cinnamon and slight fruit taste but no alcohol. The beef empanadas were the star here; I could have eaten a ton of these. The beef was well seasoned, the dough was crispy, and the sugar on the outside gave it a nice sweet vs. salty balance. The Aji de Gallina was good but I was a bit underwhelmed. I'd like more chicken ideally. It had a nice flavor but the sauce was kind of an odd color and glossy texture. Maybe that's how it's meant to be with the type of peppers that are in it, I'm not sure, but it looked kind of artificial. I'd order it again, though. While I was at the counter ordering my meal I think one of the quarter of half chicken meals came out and looked absolutely amazing. I would certainly return to try out more of the menu and get the empanadas again. read more

Really solid and yummy! And fun to have a Peruvian place to throw into the mix on Main! Tried the Lomo Saltado and the Culantro Bowl. Both tasty! The Culantro Bowl feels like good value, at $12 with a good amount of chicken in addition to rice and all the beans and veggies. Sauce is flavorful. I think mine could have used more cilantro and lime. The Lomo Saltado had good flavor too! I liked that the flavor of the meat and veggies soaked into the thick potato-y fries. It comes with a lot of rice as well. (Fair amount of steak but rice/potatoes is definitely the bulk of the volume in this one.) A good amount of seating/indoor dining for a smaller space. I got our order as takeout and it held up well bringing it home to eat. read more

We've always been interested in trying more Peruvian food and came across Culantro as the top option. We finally decided to visit this past weekend for lunch and when we arrived, we found the restaurant to be pretty empty, which was a bit surprising. Culantro is fast casual, so you order at the counter, take a number, and find your own seats. They do bus the tables for you after you leave. We perused the menu for a bit and eventually went with two of the items that seemed the most interesting: Aji de Gallina ($13) - On one side is a large serving of rice with salty, toasty, meaty notes, seemingly first toasted in oil, then cooked in a rich chicken broth. There's a large serving of the Aji de Gallina on the other side. This consists of chunks of shredded chicken breast and sliced potato rounds in an amarillo based sauce. There's plenty of chicken in the dish and you can tell that it's been boiled, leaving it kind of dry and chewy. There are only two small potato rounds underneath all of the chicken. The yellow sauce here is quite interesting - it's extremely thick and viscous, almost like a goop. I guess thickened with ground walnuts? It mainly tastes of sweet vegetal pepper with only a very slight spiciness. The taste overall is quite mild and the dish seems like it could easily be considered a comfort food to eat when you're sick. The best comparison I could give is that it's like an extremely mild version of a hatch green chile sauce, not nearly as flavorful or spicy and without any smokiness/char. The dish is garnished with a black olive and a quarter wedge of hard boiled egg. I read up more about the dish afterwards and discovered that this dish is supposed to be very flavorful and very spicy. I can't really say that Culantro's interpretation meets those criteria. (3/5) Sandwich de Chicharron ($13) - This sandwich includes pulled pork, similar to carnitas, that's been deep fried to impart crispness on the edges. It's very tender and juicy and shreds easily. It's topped with a tangy red onion salsa criolla. There's chipotle sauce, which is smoky, sweet, and slightly spicy, that drenches everything and starts dripping out as soon as you lift the sandwich. The bun is big and dense, but not very fluffy, which doesn't allow it to encapsulate the ingredients very well. On the bottom bun, there's a layer of thinly sliced sweet potato - you can't really taste any of it through all of the sauce smothering the sandwich but it does impart a chewy texture. Unfortunately, the sweet potato also makes the bottom bun extra slippery and it makes it impossible to keep the ingredients from sliding out onto the plate. By the time you're a quarter done with the sandwich, you'll find that half the ingredients have slid out onto your plate. Not good construction in my opinion. In addition to the sandwich, you get commercial steak fries on the side. They're fried decently with a delicate crisp on the exterior and a fluffy interior. They aren't seasoned so you'll have to add salt or eat with ketchup. (3/5) Again, I'm not too familiar with Peruvian cuisine, so I can't say whether I don't like these particular dishes in general, or whether I don't like the dishes at this particular restaurant. Everything I ate was just okay, making Culantro a restaurant I'm not in any hurry to return to. Bathrooms: One all gender single room. Very modern eclectic decor. I liked it as a starter. *Lomo Saltado (Marinated steak strips stir fried with onions and tomatoes in soy sauce and aji Amarillo. I'll start off by saying, I am both A. Glad than Ann Arbor has a Peruvian restaurant and B. Aware that Culantro just opened. New restaurants sometimes take a while to work out kinks, smooth out systems, etc. So everything I'm about to say is written with that in mind. However. I really didn't love this place. There were some definite highlights, but the food was very underwhelming to me. On a positive note, the space itself is cute. It is place where you order at the counter and the food is brought to your table. Our host was very friendly and genuinely seemed glad to see us and talk us through the menu. The food was the major disappointment to me. I will start with the only dish I liked: the yucca fries. These tasted great and the sauce it came with had a really nice kick. Overall, this is a great app! The other app we got was the Patacones Picantes. This dish was not very good. The plantains were completely flavorless. All of the flavor came from the pico de gallo. Even the sauce on it was really lost in the overall blandness of the dish. I would not order again. I was excited to try their vegan dish, Tallarín Verde. I've never had a vegan dish at a Peruvian place, and this one looked great. I really don't know what to say about this dish but it just doesn't work. It had a very strong flavor, but that flavor was not appealing. I'm not a picky person, and yet I really disliked this dish. I would seriously recommend that this dish get a major rework. I would be willing to give Culantro another try in the future to see if some of these flavor issues get resolved, however I can't say this will be high on my list for a while. read more

Immediately the employee hung up the phone. I called back just for it to be immediately hung up again! Had the same attitude in their restaurant in Ferndale as well. Being from South America, we were very excited about the opening of Culantro in Ann Arbor. It did not disappoint. The place is not large and is rectangular in shape. You walking, place your order and the food is brought to your table when it's ready. There were four booths but the bulk of the seating is parallel to the booths. In all, we had the beef empanadas, Ají de Gallina, Carne a la Plancha, Alfajores and Chicha Morada. Personally, the Chicha Morada brought me back to being a youngster with every sip I took. Very similar to a drink called Api. It has a unique flavor that I cannot describe but was happy to experience it again. The beef empanadas were especially tasty. They were juicy and also came with a satisfying crunch. The chicken dish was very yellow. I suspect the use of ají amarillo but that's a guess. It was not spicy and the chicken was cooked very well. The Carne a la Plancha is starch on starch topped with an egg. What's not to love? The fries were tasty and had that steak juices soaking in. The egg added a nice touch but the Chimichurri sauce really set off the flavors. We ended up using it here and there on all the dishes. The Alfajores were quite large and had a lot of confectioners sugar. Made me cough on the first bite. It's tasty but was a little light on the interior jam, at least compared to ones I've had in the past. Overall, we are very happy to have a taste of home nearby. The only knock we had would be that nothing was spicy hot, at least with the dishes we ordered. We look forward to coming back to try more of the menu. read more

Four of us went for dinner on a recent Friday to a newer Peruvian restaurant and the food was delicious! We had the empanadas with beef and they were different from what I'd experienced in Argentine cuisine, three of us were attracted to the same thing, a bowl (get it spicy!) with chicken, corn, beans, etc(#13) and our odd person out had the half chicken which came with a side salad that was fresh and tasty. I had a can of Peruvian soda ( sort of a cola, but light yellow) which I enjoyed. Lots of variety, the place fills up but it moves along. You order when you get there then take a table and they deliver the food to you. Very pleasant atmosphere, there's one closer in Ferndale that we will put on our list to visit soon read more

A great new addition to Ann Arbor's dining scene! Came around 7PM on a Sunday. This is in downtown AA, so parking is mostly street parking or garage parking. They have menus near the front and you join a line to order. Food came out really quickly and was really yummy! I got the aji de gallina, which is a creamy, chicken dish. So excited to have a Peruvian restaurant in Ann Arbor. Having grown up in South Florida, had many opportunities to have great Peruvian cuisine. As you walk in you walk to the front order at the counter and pay for your meal and service. I do find tipping before service to be awkward but many restaurants are doing this to save money. Also they have cups and a water dispenser as water is self serve. If you don't what you want you can grab menus and find a table to sit it at. We started with a side of fried yuca which was good the sauce served with it was excellent had a bit of a kick. We ordered the grilled chicken half portion and my wife and I split it since we ordered other items but one person could finish this. The Aji verde sauce that came with it was amazing perfectly acidic and spicy compliments the grilled chicken. The ceviche took some time to come out, the fish was very fresh it had decent flavor could definitely taste the lime. Compared to what, I had in Florida, I felt this ceviche lacked a little flavor, but for AA pretty solid, definitely looking forward to trying more of their cooked options. read more

Large portions, great service with ready recommendations for those unfamiliar with Peruvian cuisine, although I thought my Lomo Saltado was a bit a salty and lacked depth. The empanadas are coated in a dusting of sugar which I'm not accustomed to but didn't find it unwelcome either! It is legitamately a crime that this place is rated at 3.5 at the time of writing this. We got the lomo saltado, the Pollo a la brasa, and patacones picantes. Everything was awesome, and it came out in 5 minutes. The food quality is in the top 10% of restaurants in ann arbor, on par with savas and mani. This is NOT authentic Peruvian Food. I could end there but let me explain. I am Peruvian and have eaten our food all over US and abroad. First, I've read all the reviews here and feel sad for those who wrote it was their first time trying Peruvian food and enjoyed this fast food place. Glad to see that those who have eaten here and are Peruvian came away as we did - disappointed. Please recognize that when you do find and try a Peruvian restaurant, your taste buds will be blown away. You will come away from every bite with insufficient words to describe the confluence of flavors, heat and spices. We were so looking forward to trying this new place, finally in Ann Arbor. Peruvian food has been awarded by many as having the most flavorful food in the world. "Central" just won top restaurant. Of course -- Peruvian food is influenced by Spanish, Italian, Japanese cultures on a bed of indigenous ingredients (seafood, meats, root vegetables and unique spices). Culantro. What a disaster! Should have expected this the moment food was brought out within minutes of ordering. We ordered many dishes to try and taste all. (1) Yuca Fries - not hot, not fried or crunchy, We didn't even finish them. (2) Ceviche - tilapia with no flavor, not fresh, no spices. Peruvians invented this dish and this was a shameful attempt. No visible ricoto (red spice) or anything. Watery. (3) Empanadas - Nope. Took a bite hoping for all the flavors of a baked Peruvian one (juicy chicken or meat with, hard boiled eggs, raisins and olives). Nope. Unflavorful with none of those ingredients. (4) Aji de Gallina - a glop of some thick sauce, flavorless with also flavorless tough chicken. Not at all what it should be. Not even the rice was flavored (should be white but correctly made it's grainy and garlicky) (5) Seco Norteño - Dry meat with no infused flavors. Should be soaked through and through (cooked slow through time) with full cilantro flavors (Wait! Isn't that the name of the place????) served with beans that tasted as if from a can (cause none of the beans were fully cooked, just plump) (6) Arroz con pollo - this was their best attempt but still the rice lacked the robust flavors one expects and it came with only one drumstick (crazy price for this) (7) Alfajores - sometimes we save the day with at least something sweet (usually made elsewhere) but, nope, mostly starch, not typical consistency and little dulce de leche inside. (8) Maracuya Mousse - And here's why they will earn one star. Delicious. If I am majorly withdrawing and can't fly to LAX, JFK, MIA for actual dishes, I will stop in for this Maracuya (it's Passion Fruit). In summary, do not be fooled or misguided that this place serves Peruvian food. I wish that place in Toledo was still open (Chosica!). It was worth the one hour drive. This is a 10 minute walk from my son's home but he voiced wishing to forget it's even there. read more
