I have been here several times but yesterday was the last time. Not only have the prices sky rocketed but their service gets worse and worse. We waited over 2 hours for 2 sushi rolls last night. They were quick to charge us for them ahead of time only to keep us waiting. We asked for extra grilled onions and I swear it was almost like they purposely jipped us and gave us even less than usual. No orange sauce to dip them in or anything! The place has turned into more like a club with people standing around the parking lot drinking out of their cars while they wait to be seated. I also tried to call them ahead of time multiple times to order ahead and no one picked up the phone. I don't know who runs this place but it's only a matter of time before this place gets too out of control and gets shut down. read more

Service was great! Food was ok! We went during lunch and we were seated promptly. The server gave us a few suggestions on things that she recommended. We made a decision to order to a few different things to see what we liked. We ended up ordering: 6 Shrimp empanadas 1 Shrimp taco 1 Shrimp quesadilla 1 Tostada Hulk They brought out chips and salsa. The salsa looked appetizing, but upon tasting it I noticed that it lacked flavor. Not sure if this is typical, but it was definitely disappointing. Next up was the Tostada Hulk! We loved this! Great portion, great price, great taste! We each had a taste and then set it aside to await our other dishes. The shrimp empanadas came out and they were hot! Perfect!! I broke one in half and couldn't figure out if it was uncooked or if it was the filling that made it look mushy. I could see shrimp & cheese in it. It wasn't what I expected, but the taste was ok. We brought 4 home. My husband got his shrimp quesadilla which he liked and then I got the shrimp taco. The shrimp taco seemed to be filled with mashed potatoes and shrimp. Again, not what I was expecting, but it was ok. It then got me thinking that perhaps that was a similar filling for the empanadas. Usually menus include prominent ingredients, which is why I had a different expectation. Next time, I'll ask about the ingredients before I order! It'll be a while though. The restaurant is still new so I sincerely hope management is monitoring these reviews and adjusting accordingly. 1/27/17 - went back sooner than expected due to a friend's invitation. Again, service was great! Our server was friendly and I think she did a great job interacting with her tables. I actually noticed this server yesterday, and had been impressed with how she engaged with her table. The salsa is still disappointing. It's almost as if it's sat out too long. Came here with large group of family and friends for a double celebration. So my knowledge of the place was limited, as it's my first time and just no idea what to expect other than "Mexican sushi"! The outside is nondescript enough, in a small mall right next to roadway, but once inside I was impressed! Lots of booths and tables, a nice bar area in the far corner, and a band playing - which is itself a blessing and a curse, in the same moment! The decor is very nice - dark but light (if that can make sense!) and a rather intimate feel for a rather large venue. We were promptly seated, at a long table in a kind of side room. We had nice view of main dining area - and that band! - so enjoyed some "privacy" while not feeling isolated. The place was busy, about 3/4s filled, and our area was the emptiest; good for the kids who wanted to wander and adults who switched seats now and then. First order of business was drink orders! We tried some of their "adult" drinks; a Tamarind margarita, a Pina Colada margarita and a Strawberry margarita were the choices. When they showed up, I was impressed with the presentations of the drinks - if they tasted just half as good as they looked, we'd be happy! We were not disappointed, and the drinks were delicious. Sharing them was the best part, in case we needed a round two - the Pina Colada would be my next choice (I had the tamarind first, but my sweet tooth was jealous). While enjoying the drinks, we were able to look over the rather extensive menu and decide what to get . . . and it was a lot, a mix of appetizers and entrees. Here, in no particular order, are the ones I can remember! Started off with a shrimp ceviche, a tostitostada, hot cheetos ceviche . . . entrees included a fried fish, filete a la plancha, tres quesos and 5 cheese rolls (with no meat or fish in either), rock shrimp poppers, spicy shrimp, two shrimp tacos and a shrimp quesadilla, guerrero roll, and a guamuchilito roll. Just a snack, right?!? LOL Anyway, the food started arriving rather quickly, with appetizers first, and with the amount ordered even with sharing we barely finished them when the entrees arrived. Sharing the rolls is the best part! I had never had fried sushi rolls, but they were very good. And with 5 sauces available to customize them, any roll should be delicious. I was especially impressed with the two rolls we asked to be made meatless - the menu is heavy on fish and meat, and only options for vegetarians is to modify an order, and with the rolls it tasted really good even without the seafood or meat - I would definitely order again! To finish with a "dessert" of sorts, we tried the Nina Fresas shooters - small strawberry shooters! VERY sweet, and with a good kick to them - ordered seconds AND thirds, as it was a celebration dinner. The only other thought to share is the the shrimp come in three heat levels, and we got the hottest - spicy. Even for the heat lover that ordered it, it was HOT! So, if you expect to share, try devil's or angry to be safe(r)! The rest of the food was wonderful, and there are no real recommendations as everyone ordered what they liked - no one was unhappy leaving, and the deep fried rolls reheated well in an oven at 350 for about 10-15 minutes - great leftovers, just wish I had thought of grabbing some of those sauces to go! They added a lot. The service was excellent and very attentive for our many demands - um, requests - and as crowded as it became in the place, we never wanted for a need. Thank you to Xiomara for the level of service excellence! The only drawback is the music - the band was good, but wayyyyyyy too loud! Conversation is impossible, and the break they took was a blessing. Not a band hater, but do like to talk with the others without shouting or sticking my mouth in their ear. If this is important to you, check ahead for the music situation. Otherwise, if you like sushi or seafood give this place a try - it pleasantly surprised me and will likely catch your fancy as well! read more

Definitely not recommending this place! Food offers a very poor attempt at sushi, with flavorless and dense rolls. That said, the ambiance was hopelessly loud... the house band was playing and singing so loud and off key that we could not have a conversation... we could barely place our order! I read the reviews and was hesitant to eat at Culichi town but most of the bad reviews were for waits and bad service. We decided to eat there at 11am to beat the crowd but service was still a bit slow. I ordered a shrimp cocktail which was good nothing out the ordinary. Then I ordered a Fontana ceviche which was amazing. The ceviche is definitely a 5 star but they do have a huge menu so I'm basing this review solely on the cocktail and fontana ceviche. read more

I'd agree with another Yelper...this is Americanized, but still good Mexican. The sushi selections are okay, I was hoping to find sashimi, but it's not offered.l. I came in on the first Monday after the restaurant's initial opening and it's still pretty busy. I looked at the menu...lots of low carb options (if you don't inhale the chips and tostadas). We ordered the langostino plate, botana especial, del mares roll, and Culichi Town roll. Too much sauce on the langostino...I'll ask to have the sauce on the side next time. But overall, everything was good! Service was great, restaurant was clean, and the atmosphere was loud and lively. Family birthday celebration last Sun. 2/20. Seated in front of small stage. Waitress was friendly and prompt. With 14 of us, she took our orders and food came without too much waiting. Culichi Margarita was very good. Devils Shrimp spicy hot as advertised. At 2 pm, the Mariachi band started sound check. A little loud I thought. When they started playing the brass section was painfully loud as was the PA system. For a venue the size of Culichi Town , Modesto, the music was so loud as to be far beyond safe OSHA standards. We could not have conversation at our long table. I had to get up and leave. The rest of the party was behind me as soon as the check was paid. I estimate the db sound level to be near 130 - 135 which is where hearing damage could result. Always wondered what the place was like after seeing from Sizzler many times. Now I know. We sat at the bar where there were maybe 15 brews on tap and cocktails as well. It was clean, suitably dim, with a HUGE menu variety from Mexican to sushi. The food we had was excellent in flavor and portions were adequate. Mexican food was basically fish-based (shrimp, fish, octopus) tacos, ceviche, empanadas, etc., rather than traditional beef, pork or chicken. The service wasn't anything spectacular but I had a blast with my family here. They made sure to check up on us more than other restaurants for sure, even though it was busy. It definitely won't appeal to everyone but the Mexican banda compliments the ambiance and theme of the restaurant. The food was great and savory, my only complaint would be the extra item that we were charged for, whoever is in charge of that needs to do better, the dishonestly takes away from the goodness of the experience. My brother wanted to try this place even though I warned him about the reviews, he didn't listen, lesson learned. Drinks- not good. Food - mediocre for such exorbitant prices, honesty my nieces cheese quesadilla was better than everything else. Service - poor. Our orders were taken and we didn't see anyone come around to ask if we needed refills or anything until 45-50 min later when we got our food. Tried this spot by myself because I was waiting for an appointment nearby, and I was curious what a sushi/mex restaurant was like. First impression was that it was clean and tidy. I sat at the bar so I could watch TV. Only Spanish channels on. EXTREMELY loud background music. Did I say BACKGROUND?? Lol I had the shrimp ceviche. Really delicious, and fresh, but I wish they would have given me more than just 2 flour tortilla chips with it. Also, definitely needed more avocado on it too. There were some large round corn tortillas, but they were stale and tasted gross. The chips, salsa, and beans were delicious. I used those chips for the ceviche. She gave me a tray of squeeze bottles but no explanation of what they held inside. I finally got her attention to ask...Chipotle, Ketchup, Mayonnaise, Salsa, and Black sauce. The black sauce was amazing but I couldn't continue to eat it because it was too spicy for me! The reason I gave it 3 stars is because of the obnoxiously LOUD Spanish music. This is not your traditional Japanese sushi restaurant. If traditional sushi is what your looking for this is not the place for you. This is a fusion of Mexican marisco flavors with sushi. This fusion was born and is very popular in the northern Mexican state of Sinaloa. Their sushis are meh ok considering we don't have just very few of these type of restaurants around here. In the LA area there's many offering delicious Mexican sushi. If you don't care for the ones here try them again at another restaurant I assure you they are very good. I think the sushi here are lots of rice/cream cheese very little actually filling like shrimp or whatever is in it. Mariscos are better tasting but but not the best. We are Sinaloense's (from the northern Mexican state of Sinaloa) and we know our seafood so we are a bit of seafood snobs. We personally really like the tostada Sinaloense it's very authentic. Other than that I don't care for the rest. The music is pretty loud, they have live banda Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I really enjoy it but after a while I want to hold a conversation with my people at my table and it's pretty much impossible. It is does add a great atmosphere for a while until you just want to socialize and you can't. Service is bad, at first I thought well they're new we need to be patient while they train. Been there a few times since they opened over a year and half ago and it's still BAD! I've witnessed and had a few bad experiences and this area really needs to be addressed. I come by here when I'm really craving Mexican sushi because it's the closest to me. Sushi's lack flavors. They also have a short menu here in Modesto compared to other culichi's in the LA area. Those restaurants have a large selection of sushi rolls that are not offered here. I also think sushi here just doesn't taste the same as the original CulichiTown in Bell. Have been coming here for a while . It has gone down and you can see it from the place not being crowded at all . This was on a Sunday . Before this place was packed but they really over price their drinks and have made them smaller . They don't even give chips and salsa like they did before .
