Karly was the friendliest bar tender I've met in some time. Great reco's from both Karly and the other patrons at the bar for a first-timer. The chicken wings were top notch, and the pretzel nuggets + garlic butter and cheese sauce were excellent. All the food was fresh, hot, and tasted great. We stopped by the Cullom Knoll as a local place to visit. I hadn't been here before but was pleasantly surprised. We sat on the back patio which had a nice atmosphere. The server was friendly and nice. We had great weather and good friends! The menu had a TON of options that all looked fantastic. Thankfully there were four of us so we had an opportunity to sample plenty. Overall, we found the food all had great seasoning and taste. I was honesty pleasantly surprised. Initially, this seemed like just a local bar to me with some food options but we quickly learned their food was not local bar food. It had plenty of flavor and we were not disappointed. The loaded spuds were coated with cheese and bacon and the beer cheese on the Tavern Burger was a MUST! I'm giving a 5 for atmosphere, FOOD, and the service. However, I was disappointed to see a group that was LARGELY over served, which we brought up to the server, and found the group DROVE from the property. I had a broiled tilapia. It was a special for today. It was excellent. As with everything I ate today, including the cream of chicken and rice soup and the fresh mixed vegetables. And for dessert I had a crunch cheesecake that was to die for! I would highly recommend this restaurant. read more

Amazing fish fry! You must try the artichoke and spinach (?) dip appetizer. The BEST I have ever had hands down. The main dining area is quite loud as it is where the bar is located. If you want a bit quieter dining experience, get seating in the back room. Their service has always been outstanding-every time! They also acknowledge you when you walk in and are waiting, which is key to me. The portion sizes to pricing ratio is very reasonable. One of my faves in the area. read more

The food was really good but I would have preferred a bit more crunch to my fish. The initial portion was so big there was no need to order more. Stopped in for supper Saturday night: fish was not good, chips and salsa were very good as was the thin crust pizza. My husband and I venture out every Friday for dinner and with it being lent we knew everywhere would be very busy. I came across a post for Cullom Knoll on Facebook and as soon as I saw Lobster Mac and Cheese on the Friday specials menu I knew we must try this place. We were seated immediately in this cozy nook of a place. It was warm and inviting in the dining/bar area. We were greeted by Megan our server with a smile and bright personality who carried a new POS in her hands. She quickly then decided to write down our drink orders after attempting to use the system which would not cooperate. My husband decided on the AYCE cod and I of course the Lobster Mac and Cheese. Both entrees came with the salad bar or clam chowder. He opted for the chowder knowing I'm a soup snob and that I'd want to try. I settled for the salad bar but was hoping I didn't regret that decision. The clam chowder which of course I tried was a flavorful burst of herbs and bacon hints. Megan then said would you like some soup and still keep the salad bar plate? Why heck YES I replied. Now the downfall....the vegetable fillers of potatoes and carrots with only vague tiny bits of clam. Where's the CLAMS?!?! It could have definitely used a lot more chunks. I still went up to the salad bar and enjoyed their perfectly paired fresh salad toppings to create a great dinner salad. The entrees came out and we were loving what we saw but how would it all taste? Well lets just say my husband devoured 3 orders of both baked and fried cod. And he probably would have had more had his stomach not said NO more. My Mac came out steaming hot in a skillet they bake it in. The amount and size of lobster pieces were definitely balanced to the amount of creamy cheesy pasta. Sprinkled with bread crumbs and cheese on top. There was a slight kick of heat but could have used more spices for flavor. I also prefer elbow or cavatappi pasta instead of penne in a good mac to soak up the sauce. It was a good dish that matched it's name but would love to try other menu options next time. We opted to stay for another drink after dinner because apparently my husband's beer was coming out ice cold and he was loving that. So we enjoyed each others company, people watching, and discussing where I think the salad bar should be placed. It's placed in an awkward spot where another table is within 1 to 2 feet of it giving a limited amount of space to walk around it without bumping the person seated at that table. I'd feel claustrophobic sitting at that table but that may have been their best decision for placement. Will we be back? Yes for sure and without a doubt. Their jumbo wings are on my list to try. Megan hopefully will serve us again with her witty personality. And seeing the owner I believe walking around checking on customers was something you see rarely. We were here on a Friday night at 5. We were seated fairly quickly but after 20 minutes we were still waiting for a waitress so I asked the hostess. She apologized and said she would get our waitress. Another 15 minutes went by before a waitress came to take our drink order. We told her we were ready to order too. The slacker sauce on the wings is a great blend of flavors (Buffalo, Parmesan, garlic and just a hint of sweetness). Decided to go to the Cullom Knoll for Valentine's Day dinner. Was immediately seated and our drink orders were taken immediately. When our drinks arrived we placed our dinner orders. I ordered the Chicken Oscar, Baked Potato and Broccoli. My date ordered the Shrimp Dinner. Both meals came with either soup or All You Can Eat Salad Bar. Within minutes of getting our salad, our dinner arrived. It was less than 10 minutes!! Our food was delicious! My chicken Oscar was cooked perfectly, my baked potato was piping hot and my broccoli was delicious. My date mentioned numerous times that his shrimp was probably the best he's ever had. After we finished our dinner, we decided to share a dessert. We couldn't decide between the chocolate covered strawberries or the black forest cake. When we found out that they were only three strawberries per serving, we decided on the black forest cake. What an excellent choice we made!! The cake was made to perfection extremely moist. The frosting wasn't too rich. This was a specialty that they only had for Valentine's Day, but personally I think this cake should be on the menu all the time. I lived in McHenry and used to come to the original Cullom Knoll which the fish fry on Fridays was the best around. Was disappointed when it changed hands because it was not the same. Since we have moved to AZ and we are back for the holidays and heard it was back to being the Cullom Knoll under new ownership and thought we would try the Friday night fish fry. Have to say it is just as good as ever maybe even better. The clam chowder is the best I have had in a long time and both the regular fish fry and blue gill are excellent.
