UpRooted is a nice restaurant, old school Supper Club vibe with a salad cart and plating that may sometimes be reminiscent of the 1970's but food execution has always been good if occasionally a bit under-seasoned. And virtually NOBODY offers Beef Wellington anymore but you can get it here, always a treat for me. I've primarily eaten in the bar area which is large and nice, and has a fairly big/separate gaming space which is less busy than most places nearby since this is a higher end restaurant more than gaming bar. Service has always been professional and there is ample parking, definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. read more

Came for a birthday dinner. It wasn't too busy and service was great. Their old fashioned was good but not mixed up at all. You tasted everything warm on a big ice cube. No balance. Other than that a great evening. Sausage flatbread was hot and delicious. I had the lamb shank. Way too much food but it was done so well. Kudos. Their steak and chicken dishes were also a hit. Excellent local restaurant in McHenry, they've got the throwback salad cart where they make your salad from scratch. It reminds me of this swanky 70's steakhouse my grandma used to take me to when I was a kid. They have a huge menu with some very unique dishes to choose from. They had cheesy potato soup to start with, which was fantastic, my buddy and I both had the Caprese chicken entrée with spinach, risotto, and sautéed vegetables. Truly a hidden gem. The outside looks like a rundown shack but don't judge this book by its cover, the food is amazing and the dining room exhibits an agreeable economic charm. I had an excellent first experience at UpRooted. The restaurant is cozy and relaxing, and the staff are warm and make you feel like family. I loved the salad cart and the house made basil vinaigrette was incredible. I ordered the beef wellington and the dish was fabulous. The whole meal was so flavorful, and I can't stop thinking about the gravy. My boyfriend ordered the lamb shank and he was incredibly pleased with how tender it was. Relaxed, fine dining. Our server was very knowledgeable about the specials, and checked on us often without being a pest. The owner even checked in during our meal. This place is a true testament of not judging a book by its cover. The outside is unassuming but inside is a different story. We had a 10 minute wait and enjoyed some cocktails at the bar. The bartender and drinks were fabulous. When seated, our server introduced herself (Kendra) and talked to us a bit about the restaurant and their specialties. Our server was upbeat, attentive and overall outstanding! We started with the shrimp cocktail and it was one of the best we have had. We enjoyed the table side salad cart and all of the fresh options. We ordered more drinks and decided to split a steak. It was done to perfection as were the potatoes and fresh veggies. The owner stopped by with the after dinner drink cart and made some excellent after dinner drinks. We finished with a homemade dessert that was delicious. It's been a while since we have had that caliber of customer service - it was old school and impressive! We thought the prices were comparable to most surrounding places. We were meeting another couple here the other night. Neither us nor them had been here before. If it wasn't for the poorly lit sign out front, we would have never realized we were at the right place. It's a nondescript cement block of a building with a huge outdoor deck in front. The parking lot was jam packed, too. We sat in the dining room and were immediately greeted by our server who was bubbly and extremely friendly. Btw, the place was packed. She asked four our drinks and she recommended the Cinnamon Whiskey Moscow Mule. It's my new favorite drink - sooooo good. We started with buffalo cauliflower (not my cup of tea, but then again, I'm not a vegetable guy) and the Goat in the Garden appetizers. Our friends and my wife really liked the Buffalo Cauliflower (so for those who like that kind of thing, they really thought it was good). The Goat in the Garden (goat cheese, marinara, and toasted Crostinis) were really flavorful as well. We ordered and with our meals, we get salads. The salads we get are table-side made salads. The server brought a salad bar to our table and made the salads based on our lettuce selections and toppings and dressing selections. How cool , right? My wife got soup and salad and said both were delicious. Her salad was not made table-side, and while it was a good salad (the Uprooted Seasonal Salad), she wished she could have ordered the one made table-side. She also got the soup du jour which was a French Onion, which she said was really good. I got the special, a New York Strip with a horseradish crust, red potatoes and seasonal vegetables. The steak was cooked to perfection and had great flavor. The crust was not overpowering (which many horseradish crusts are), and the potatoes were crispy and soft. Who cares about the veggies, I don't. However, my wife did say they were good. The other couple got the cheeseburger and Pork Chop (with additional apple blue cheese sauce). The burger was huge and juicy. I had to add Uprooted to my list of burger places to try with my Burger Club, even though it is not specifically a burger place. The pork chop was huge. He said the apple blue cheese sauce was okay and you could take it or leave it, but the chop itself was very good. Finally finished with dinner, we thought we'd get dessert. They first brought a dessert drink bar table-side. The server/bartender lifted every type of dessert drink, told us the country of origin, the flavor profile, annd what it might pair with. While none of us got a dessert drink, it was fabulous listening and watching this server in his element discussing all the drinks. We asked to see what they had to eat for dessert and our server brought a tray of 8 different dessert "shooters" to the table and told us what each one was. We asked for several and she just handed them to us. This is such a fabulous idea! Make the dessert shooters, bring them table-side and hand them right over. We got 5 of the 8 and all were great! I would have ordered all 8 if my wife wouldn't call me a piggy. Anyway...while the building is totally opposite to what is inside; what's inside is a terrific meal, served by knowledgeable servers and bartenders, and artfully prepared by excellent chefs. I'd give this place more stars if I could. We will be making repeat appearances in the near future. read more

I have been to uprooted previously and it's been good each time. I was excited to go on a Wednesday to have their Beef Wellington special. It was delicious! I was happy that I could order mine without mushrooms. I wish I remember who our server was but she was great! She described the dish perfectly and even her soup description was good. read more

We were in the area, and found Uprooted with gluten-free option. When we first walked in, there's a bar ahead. You have to go to the left side to the dining area. We were greeted by a friendly staff, who also reviewed the menu with us, and shared with us gluten-free options available. Food was prepared with quality ingredients and presented well. I particularly enjoyed the butternut squash soup which included some chunks of butter squash so there's contrasting texture experience. For gluten-free option, we had the cauliflower crust flatbread. The crust was well prepared that it could hold up with the toppings. We would come back again when we are in the area next time. read more

I LOVE this hidden gem in McHenry county. It's easy to miss the sign. It blends in. The main dining area is comfy and cozy. It's like eating in a family dining room. It is quiet and comfortable. The service is ALWAYS AMAZING! The food is delicious and farm fresh. There is something for EVERYONE! They have a rolling salad bar! Your server asks what you'd like. It's awesome. You get exactly what you want without all the germs of a regular salad bar. The pictures below were on the July 4th. They have amazing entrees as well that come out as works of art. Also, when you walk in we were literally the only people eating at the restaurant if you can bowl was good, but not amazing but the burger was very very good. The outside looks like a run down dive bar. The inside is plain but appealing. The host was very pleasant. Our server madeleine could not have been any better. Friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. A couple very unique things here: They wheel out a cart for you to choose your salad toppings and an "adult desserts beverages" cart later. Our food was great. Pork chop and chicken Marsala. The busboy had eagle eyes! Our plates were cleared as soon as we finished an item. The owner and manager worked the dining room asking about satisfaction. This is a gem of a restaurant in McHenry. We had often driven by and didn't realize this was a restaurant. We came by for a weekday dinner and they were moderately busy and full. There is a bar section and restaurant section. The staff was friendly and quick to refill drinks, take away empty plates, and food came out quickly. There are several tables available in the dining area with nice decor. We all enjoyed our meals and some entrees came with soup or salad and we opted for the soups which were delicious. We saw other tables had chosen the salads and the staff has a salad cart and makes the salad in front of you based on your preferences. The food was fresh, delicious, and an ample amount. This was our first time coming here for lunch. It is mostly high tops with a few low tables with apparently only one waitress. They had the bar and gaming in the small restaurant. The one thing we wanted to try was the lobster roll and they were out of it at 1:30 in the afternoon. That was disappointing so we both ordered salads. Everything ranged from about $15 up to $43. We received our salads and although they were beautiful to look at they were not worth the $18 and $17 that we were charged. My salad they forgot to even put the dressing on it or on the side. The salads were good but we could have gotten the same thing elsewhere for less. It took over 20 min to get two salads. A long time for a lunch. Our waitress was the only one for the entire place including the bar without saying much more I think you understand. Btw they have dessert shooters that we were not even offered. The gal I was with asked if we were going to be able to see the desserts and the waitress said yes. She brought them out after our bill was paid. She brought a new bill with the dessert. We had a kiwi lime shooter that we shared. I realized that when I was here before we sat in a completely different part of the restaurant. read more

We landed at Uprooted after searching for a place halfway between Deerfield and Lake Geneva. The location was good and the menu looked fine. Driving up, like judging a book by its cover, neither of us was quite sure. Even the first steps inside the bar area, neither of us were reassured. Until they greeted us, which was warm and welcoming. Till they sat us down with the menus even better. (I judge places that only give a table one drink menu when there's obviously more drinkers, approved didn't disappoint.) Anyway, the server was beyond nice, our entrées delicious, and the homemade parfait (actually I don't know the real name), that they brought to the table was a treat. We left deciding that this was a great place to meet, and actually a destination to eat. We intend to go back again to try other items on the menu. Being a bit of a food snob, this was quite a wonderful and unexpected find. read more

My former review was five stars but the last six months have been disappointing both in food quality and service. The downhill spiral is head-turning happening so fast. Having eaten here three times in the last six months, we have been angered by the slow service and lack of attention the servers have given us like not ordering wine we asked for (my wife had to chase down the server), not checking back in a timely fashion to see if we were satisfied with our food, and creating our salad off their salad bar about 60% the size it was last year. On the last trip, my wife's entree, the Saturday special, was served at a lukewarm temperature. The wait staff seem more focused on their "side work" than customer satisfaction. The owner consistently has the fans running regardless of the season EVEN IN THE WINTER making the experience less than comfortable. The bartender forgot to put cranberry juice in my wife's cosmo. The solution was to dump some cranberry into my wife's glass at the table as opposed to remaking the entire drink, the preferred approach. Our last visit we were offered dessert from the their tray but at least two or three items were missing at 8:10 pm with the restaurant open until 10:00. They used to get offered both romaine and spring mix from their salad cart but on the last trip (7:25 on a Saturday), they were out of romaine. The cooks seem to have stopped putting spices on the orders (meat and fish) making the dinners less than stellar, which they had been in the past. We used to get offered an after dinner drink but that was gone on our last two visits. We have noticed fewer patrons each time we are there even in a Saturday night. Maybe that is because everything has become so slipshod. It is certainly not worth the hefty prices any more. So sad for McHenry. We used to bring quite a few out-of-town guests here, BUT NO MORE. read more

McHenry has a gemstone shining brightly in Uprooted. This restaurant was a great choice to catch up with friends over cocktails and a meal. Our server, Amber, was efficient, attentive, and so friendly. From making recommendations for starters, entrees, wine pairing and the final call for dessert and coffees, she was outstanding! Mike, the manager on duty this Saturday night, was just as welcoming and friendly, too. Our salads and soups were a great way to signal what was to come for dinner. The dressings...Basil vinaigrette, ginger vinaigrette and creamy garlic were house made, as was the tableside salad construction. Innovative! We ordered entrees which included Salmon, Caprese Chicken, Butternut Squash Ravioli, Stuffed Poblano Pepper, & Spinach and Mushroom-stuffed Raviolis...all top notch, as they were presented well and served perfectly. Wine glasses and beer glasses never went empty as Amber and staff checked on our party---attentive but not hovering--in the full restaurant! Get a reservation on the weekends as the specials will sell out...especially the Lamb Shank, and sadly, the chocolate mousse finisher. If you pass on the sweet finishers, the brandies, cordials and liqueur cart will be by soon after--highly recommend the suggested Pierre Ferrand Cognac to warm the heart. This gem in McHenry did not disappoint with so many of this customer's kudos on various levels. I can't evangelize enough about this place! Such a successful restaurant that is killing it in small town Illinois is a rarity. Call and make a reservation right away before the secret gets out about this wonderful experience in culinary delights. Bravo! We will be back, next time, with more friends. My wife has taken me here twice now , the first time was a large group of 12. We sat in the small room just before entering the main dinner room, it was very nice but a tad loud. I had the beef tips. Which was a special. And really good. And everyone else had different meals. That were very good also. The second time I just had the lobster Mac and cheese which was good. I also had the salad made at the table which was good kind of reminded me of "Dover Straights" in Mundelien, Back in the day. It appeared that all at my table had good entrees. Dessert came by and we got the adult dessert bar. Which is a bunch of different after dinner liquors this was a nice feature as we all got ourselves a drink Thank came the desserts that come in large shot glasses. ( I had them the first time that I was here. And each time they were awesome. The only thing not giving 5 stars is that the building itself. The exterior is nothing to write home about. Absolutely outstanding! A gourmet local fresh food to table experience. You can choose your steak from those laid out as you walk in the door. If you prefer fish or vegetarian, that is available as well. The plating of the food was professional and rivaled that of any fancy big city restaurant. Top-shelf drinks were creative and fun. I had to try the Hibiscus Martini and was not disappointed. It was a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. The servers were accommodating to special requests and were both professional and personable. The first time we went we just happened upon it and were very pleasantly surprised. The second time we brought my parents who have travelled all over the world and eaten in the finest establishments. They gave the restaurant high marks. Here's the good, the bad, the ugly & the beautiful: distinctly different bar & dining room areas in a fun way. Delicious hand crafted cocktails. Our waitress was not very friendly , which was quite disappointing. Both of us have been in the business and would not hire her in our establishment. (Hopefully this was a rare off day) The food was delicious! My medium rare meat was perfectly done, the salad cart is a nice touch, albeit the salad bowls are very (too) small. My friend thoroughly enjoyed her vegetarian main dish. The individual dessert shot glasses are a unique & fun option.
